also to add even more context to the fcvkery that mappa staff had to go through:
    - so s4 was so rushed at the push of kodansha and nhk japan, as they wanted the season out asap to keep up the hype, and not have a s2 on their hands again.
    - wit wanted out since s3 as theyre actually a small studio, the workload for s4 trumped everything from previews seasons combined *if u read the manga you know why* also bc wit had other anime scheduled before s4 thus it would have taken no joke another 4-5 years to make it
    - thus kodansha and nhk japan sent a callout to other studios to replace wit. absolutly every single one of them refused as they were already full with pre-planned schedules and again, it would have taken years to do
    - mappa was the only studio who said "maybe". then they took it, reluctantly.
    - mappa had to scramble for a good animation team and directors and most of the good ones per say were already working on jujutsu kaisen
    -
    so now
    1. an anime usually has around 1 year to a year and a half of production. s4 had 9 months. *they were also set to release it in summer and got delayed bc it was just not possible*
    2. a normalish anime requiers around 3k frames per season. aot needs that per episode. even more. especially w s4
    3. they decided to use outsourced cgi titans as opposed to drawing them bc it takes them waaay less time to do. all they do it tweak the outsourced cgi to fit the anime.
    4. they HAD to resort to cgi titans bc the humungus amount of titan fights and work needed for s4 outdo all the other seasons combined *and mappa even so did their best, and every single still frame of a titan or very short scenes, are 2d drawn*
    5. around october or so, interviews came out of the animation directorsaying that he was dumped on this anime, when he already had some other work, and made to do it.
considering all of this, this season should have been horrendous. everything was pointing to everything going wrong and mappa still somehow by the will of god made it look amazing, and the cgi is literallt the best cgi i've ever seen in an anime, and most of the times, the cgi was absolutly seamless. mappa absolutly, broke their backs to give us a worthy s4 with amazing animation.
some of us who knew already how the animation industry works were extremly worried over the time crunch the animators had, and were praying to god that theyre fine. so imagine all this sht, and then you add harrassment online onto it. for the love of god.
also tbh no one is to blame here, if you really want to blame someone, blame kodansha and nhk japan, but at the same time, not even they are 100% to blame? them wanting the season out asap to keep up hype w it being the last season and not have a s2 on their hands is not wrong either.
also they had only 9 months bc as with the rest of the studios, mappa already had their schedules full, with jjk and future animes, its just that they were the least full full out of everyone.

American animators can also get paid by frame, but being paid by hour is more common(the work pipeline is a lot different from Japan's). Either way, the industry standard is 12-24 frames per hour, or about one second of animation per hour worked.

When the jobs are quick its easy decent money, but when something goes wrong you end up spending hours just to make less than a minimum wage job while holding way more accountability for the work. The worst is if you ever get stuck on something for more than a day or two, because you've made little or no money and your backlog continuously piling up and your gonna need to catch up.

I don't know what to think, every animator's story is same, work under pressure, gets criticized by toxic fans, not much money but they still do their best. I also want to be an animator and trying to get admission in TOKYO animation college, but whenever I hear their stories I feel like quiting my dream. What should I do.

Work smart not hard... we have bosses from all over the world coming to Swiss, Zurich to see how our system works. 90% of them are shocked that we start working as a 15-16 year old kid already and getting paid $1k a month for 4 years after that you earn above $3k a month after 5-10 years of schooling(Diploma, Bachelor, Masters etc) you earn up to $6k-8k a month.
To ear 1$ per Frame in 2021 is lower than some people earn in Prison in some countries.... Yikes

Why don't they just pay them by the hour ? Minimum wage at least , I know paging by the hour means that the cost of production of anime will go high and as we know animation studios barely get paid for their work anyway let alone be able to pay their staff well but some sort of solution needs to be found because for a first world country and the third largest economy in the world , that is ridiculous , apparently in the states the average animator gets paid 17$ an hour , Japan it's a few dollars depending on how fast you work

Probably of the work culture there, think its looked down upon if the worker complains. Then if they get fired other companies won't hire them as they will be seen as troublemakers. The animators would need to go on strike for that which kind of goes against Japanese nature lol

  • @tennooperator8182
    @tennooperator8182 3 года назад

While I support animators should get paid more, the 2 euros per frame is actually not as low as people think (it's still shit though). Going by USD lets say on avg an animator does 600 frames per anime episode, that's $1,416 (converting the 2 euros to USD) or lets say 100 frames thats $236. So honestly this looks like it's just a big competition in the job industry to get people to do more frames per anime. Which can be a big **** you to the anime/artists who do 12/10 work on anime like Demon Slayer/anything Ufotable, Mushuko Tensei and many more, who can say for example can only pump 50 frames per episode cause of the high quality.
So basically if you can keep up a personal quota you can get decent money if the projects aren't high quality like a Ufotable anime (unless they pay higher?), but if you don't constantly hit that mark you'll be making nothing. Also If I remember correctly 1 sec of animation in a anime = 24 frames
