Whose watching this in the age of coronavirus? lol
Lol I am I'm trying to see if the plans are getting Clean now . before people get on them no news is taking about this . and I'm trying to phone WestJet because thay had 5 people sick
Looks like we always should have been wearing masks on flights. 😳
Wearing masks on a plane before it was cool...
U mean covid 19 or flu corona?
Me
Ya know...if they gave packs of wipes, antibacterial wipes, and sanitizer in the pockets, I'm sure many people would happily wipe the table themselves. Save the crews time and allows those who are paranoid to take extra steps. Some people don't care, but for those who do, there's not much we could do.
Kameko Miyamora yeah but why are we even paying staff's that are not cleaning the plane well and company not taking any cautions.
@@TattoosLovers I don't know how much cleaning is in their job descriptions, and as mentioned in the vid, they don't really have time between flights. The people are making the planes much worse by putting diapers and tampons in the pocket seats. Theres also always gonna be people who are sick or who dont wash their hands and make the environment much worse as well. The facelift does help, people go on thinking its clean, its not like the mess is obvious. Thinks like headrest as well are usually fabric, which makes it even harder to clean. Its gross for sure! Plane are also so big, consider the time it would take to clean if they even spent a minute on each seat...after every flight!
If it was something like Japans trains, there are people come in after a trip, wipe everything, put everything back in speedy time, thats one thing...but the people who do that are actual cleaners, and Japans standards are high in general....that and the people also do their part to keep the place clean. Ive studied their culture and went there myself this year. Schools don't have janitors, hard to find a garbage can on the street cause youre expected to take your trash home and not litter, even mall food courts, theres papertowel and sinks near by to clean up after yourself. Although there are custodians in the mall, its still a shared duty..there's respect for both their communities and the people who work in it.
Excuse me? why? people don't pay thousands of dollars just to end up sitting on dirty public toilet practically and travel 10,000 miles. The airlines are too cheap to hire people to clean the aircraft properly and they should be fined for that. He said 5 to 10 minutes to clean the air craft.Ridiculous!
@@samlsd9711 people pay thousands of dollars for literally the seat (thus why first class costs more) and food. With it also covers costs of the aircraft, the pilot and staff, gas etc etc.
As much as wed wanna blame the craft, until more people get sick on flights, they have no reason to step up honestly. It looks clean enough for people to not notice or care, i doubt people found a dirty nappy in their pockets before the crew did, so its not like they arent cleaning at all. Its just to do a thorough cleaning is a harder task. People get mad when flights are delayed even 10minutes, they just want to go where they need to go.
I would guess that longer flights have more time and may be cleaner, but it really depends. If you get on a layover flight, someone was just sitting in your seat. Who knows when a plane really gets off time and has a chance to really be cleaned
11:06 _"i always say that diseases are one aircraft away"_
*coronavirus has entered the chat*
lmao that aged so well
Yeah.. I'm in the US and we're still all pandemic-ey
I’m in England and we’re nowhere near getting this sorted 😃🙃👍
Before i even watch the video, let me guess. They're going to find E. Coli on EVERYTHING
Cheetah 😷😷😷😷
😭😂🤣😄😆😭😂🤣😄😆
Yup, fecal matters. Love ecoli. Everybody hates e-coli. I love e-coli.
@@samlsd9711 why do you love E coli? You a scientist or something?
NEVER any soap or hot water anywhere.
what is e-coli
When you live in the USA and you love this show
Totally and binging on lol
Same.
It will always amaze me that cleanliness is never considered as part of customer safety or customer experience
Marketplace, I suggested years ago that you need to swab-test the bins at airport security that passengers are forced to put their personal articles in, including their E. coli contaminated shoes. There should be two categories of bins (colour-coded). One for clothing and gear and one for shoes. A main reason the seatback pocket is filthy is that people cross their legs and the bottom of their shoes wipe on it. Shoe soles are covered in E. coli.
With the shoes going in the bins, just don't force passengers to put shoes in the bins, works in other countries very well.
Thank you. They should have colored separate bins for your shoes, electronics, and clothes/jackets.
Okay who is shoving used tampons in the backseat pocket?!
Some people.
Maggie E that was a shocker
This why you should do your part to stay clean.
Forget that, I want to give a talk to who put dirty diapers in there.
definitely some dirty people out there 👎
I’m surprised that you guys didn’t consider using sterile gloves to handle the samples.
Not surprised*
Ikr
Jeffery I thought the same.
thay will now.
Considering they charge such high prices to fly...cleaning is the least they could do make clients comfortable
I'm not going on a plane after what happened to Kobe after that I thought I am never going on a plane again actually I never went on a plane in my life
I don't live in Canada, but I love this marketplace series because i can still relate here in America!
Fellow American _Marketplace_ viewer here, and I can’t get enough of the show either.
I didnt know about the headrests but i always wear a hoodie, with the hood up, when i fly.
Darren Ernest Many flights are initially sweltering, especially when it's summer and in the high nineties outside. Even in the winter sometimes flights can be sweltering, but the hoodie is a smart idea for most of the flight.
I’ve seen a video clip where Naomi Campbell does her own cleaning before she sits down a plane. She always carries antibacterial wipes, she wipes the seat and the tray table, it may sound ridiculous what she’s doing but come to think of it, I think it’s a good idea to carry your own wipes and doing a bit of cleaning before you sit in your seat.
Maybe they could supply wipes as you get on and the passengers could clean the plane... for a cheaper fare ;)
DIONNE FRANCIS-BROWN Yes. I saw this vid too.
Yes I just saw this video and I am all for this I have been doing this for years and people looked at me weird. I did not care.
To save you time, the top 5 are: seatbelt, food tray, seat pocket, headrest, pillows/blankets
Thanks
You needed a spoiler alert and read more
m yu the most contaminated is the headrest, not pillows/blankets.
Wait the pillows and blankets aren't new???
door knobs were #3
I never use the blanket/pillows as I see how people use them on the plane. I just dress comfortably and use a jacket to cover if needed. The head rest was definitely a surprise. These days I try to wipe everything down once I get seated. I guess I need to add the headrest to the list!
I'd love to see the results of a similar test during the covid19 pandemic, where airlines are forced to take extra cleaning precautions like fogging the cabin each day with disinfectant 🤔🤔🤔
Oh, and it would be great if you swab the overhead bin handles/latches as well
They should have a dispenser of wipes at the entrance of the plane Just like they do at the supermarkets. It would not only be beneficial healthwise but financially as well as it would cut down on the amount of employees calling in sick.
Just imagine everyone who boards the plane what around how many seats, wipes off the seats and tray stuff's It in the back pocket of the the seat, leaving the dirty wipes on the plane adds more cleaning time. It may sound like a good idea but it won't work speaking from someone who has cleaned airplanes.
It would delay boarding and take-off. Many people would be standing the aisles cleaning their seat area. AND, the people who would likely use them are the ones who ALREADY travel with wipes. Then, what about disposal of the wipes? They'd be in every crevice and on the floors throughout the planes. Then, you'd have the people who would stand there and take 100 of them because "they're free".
That’s just plane nasty!😯😂
Royal Caymanian
Your comments are pathetic.
Royal Caymanian ihy😂😂
Royal Caymanian lolololololol
Royal Caymanian good one.
Pun intended
Makes me wanna wear head-to-toe anti-contamination gear, mask, plus gloves next time I get on a plane. 😂😂😂
Now you can due to this corona virus and you won’t be laughed at 🤣🤣🤣
“Fecal?”
“You’d he surprised how far it gets.”
I love that guy.
Laudanum 1987 Matter ?

The kid’s reaction to the mold 😂
Poor thing will be traumatized for life
Wearing face masks helps A LOT! Thats why so many Japanese people wear them in Tokyo. not due to air pollution but to shield themselves from colds and flus. I always wear them when I do international flights now.
Adding another note here, some Japanese wear masks because they are without makeup, pimples or just shy.
Or maybe reading something funny on the mobile phone but don't want people to see you smile like a creep.
I’m surprised they didn’t get samples from the overhead bin
These 'investigators' are wearing their medical masks backwards... Lol.
not to mention that method is flawed cause the mask would catch germs/viruses from their mouths and nose.
you're the one wearing it backwards then. ROFL! they're using it as it's supposed to. colored side facing outward and stiff bendable edge at the top.
And they're not wearing gloves either! Yuck!
Not perfect but better than no study
that's the point
He looks so genuinely happy when talking about fecal contamination. Gotta love when someone enjoys their job so much. I GET TO TELL PEOPLE ABOUT BACTERIA!?! AWWW YEAH!
BREAKING NEWS! We've just been reminded of something that we already knew for years! great investigative journalism, CBC
No wonder how corona smashed everyone specifically when it comes to long international flights with contaminated air. Plus entertainment kits onboard too from remote control to headphones. Oooo boy
Just got off an air Canada flight a month ago, after leaving the airport I got a serious case of bronchitis. That later developed into an asthma attack. Had no OHIP (Canadian health insurance) because I've been out of Canada for more than a year and that's the rule. Went to the emergency room, had to pay 700 dollars for treatment. I really think I got sick because of my flight. 700 dollars!
Tokyo Mamba awful for you.
This is when you really appreciate our universal health care.
I'm normally not a germaphobe, but the next time I fly I'm seriously wearing a mask and latex gloves.
4:34 his smile when he says ‘fecal’ lmaooooo
Imagine how sick you’d be if you never came into contact with any germs
Basil Hassoun Good exercise for your immune system. Also, take your vitamin D3!
Should’ve tested the airline water 💧 the one you wash your hands with.
Someone did that, you know! It’s just about the nastiest thing you will find outside of Kibera.
Would love to see a covid19 study on this now. See if cleaning protocols and passenger mask requirements, seeing this test being done now.
I am glad I carry my own blanket, wear a facial mask, and wipe the screen, tray table, and remote control when I travel, if possible.
Sure appreciate them asking randoms if they think finding bad things is bad. Very informative!
If you want the airplane scrubbed down after each flight, expect to pay a whole lot more and wait, wait, wait!
Maybe the Airlines can use their Greed from the Exorbitant Fees they now charge for Baggage, to have them cleaned for longer times.
The main take home message is to protect yourself by not putting your sandwich in the seat pocket and use the air blower in front of your face to make an air curtain. Impossible to sanitize a plane during changeover
@@ilovesnature6371 the profit margins for airlines is actually lower than what you think it is. They actually make most of their money off business class seats and higher. Economy is just to fill in the seats. They have to pay the airport, 2 pilots and x among of stewardess including their accommodations if applicable. There's also deicing if your flight requires it. Money to offset the price of the plane which is 80-150m, maintence for your plane such as the tires, and other such. Airbridge to get you on the plane which is surprisingly expensive btw, the fuel required to get there. And of course the company needs to turn a profit as well. The list goes on. Planes lose money for every hour theyre on the ground so they make every effort to keep them up in the air for as much and as long as possible. You're thinking in a consumer standpoint. Not a business standpoint. They make every effort to keep costs as low as possible which is why they have logistics in the form of layovers etc and in turn you get the benefits.
Shareholder profit over basic cleanliness.
I think that they could get cleaning crews, and schedule the flight for a later time. It wouldn’t take that long for 3 or 4 people to go from row to row wiping a few things down. They just need to give them a fair pay
I’m thinking people touch the headrest as they go down the aisle but ugh!! I’ve been concerned with TSA but this study scares me worse!
I thought I was being cautious by turning down blankets and pillows, now I think we’d all be safer by taking a bleach bath before getting on the plane and then afterwards too.
5:35 Did they all bring sunglasses when they had the interview on the roof, or were they all given sunglasses? Either way, I'm finding it way funnier than it actually is.
i know this comment is quite old
but maybe to obscure their identities? Obviously not 100% but I imagine if they still work in the airline industry they probably don't want people knowing they got in touch with market place (which is "revealing" secrets)
now I Know why I often get a cold few days after flying. I always disinfect the tray before use and use gloves when going to toilet, but guess I need to start desinfect headrest also.
I just survived around the world flights during global pandemic. I wore mask the whole time and eye goggles and earplugs made for my ears. I sanitized everything with antibacterial wipes and seats next tome too. With gloves . I used disposable gloves when going to the bathroom and did not touch anything. I forgot one thing though .... the headrest. Only because i was late to get on the plane. I did really well this time. I kept humidiflyer mask on maintaining moisture from my own breathing. Last time i did not not do that and i had the driest nose and throat. Thanks for vid
i dont even live in canada and i love watching these
Similar to the report you did on hotels, you do not include a baseline for comparison. All public spaces are dirty and I would love to see a similar coverage of the CBC offices. Elevator buttons, office door handles, kitchenette surfaces, etc...
Not everyone washes their hands for 30 seconds with soap after using the washroom, not even your work colleagues or in your own home.
yeh, it is like the pot calling the kettle black.
today, people are scared of their shadow.
I do. I wash for 30 seconds with soap before rinsing. At home and when I’m out and about. It’s simple enough.
Or how about door knobs and kitchen surfaces and equipment in your own home...
yeah, but you're not paying hundreds of dollars for a bus ticket or a subway ride. If I'm going to have stay stationary for hours on end, I expect it to be clean.
cathartic reverie more like 50 cents
I remember even back in the 90s many airlines had single use headrest covers that they would change after every flight. At least here in Europe. Always found it gross they stopped doing that.
Why do you think airlines installed leather seating? For your comfort? Easier to clean as they only have X amount of time to clean the aircraft and leather is easier to clean.
"Grooming the aircraft" lol
Airlines should provide wipes and just wipe it yourself prior to using. If everyone one did it it would make it a lot cleaner and not something to add to your carry on.
I get your paying money and it's there job to clean but times get busy and things missed and this would be extremely easy to implement right away with even a corporate partnership
Very Important and informative THANK YOU!!!
I was going to make a 'but wait, it gets worse' joke but I changed my mind...
I remember cleaners years ago to groom the air craft. I fly a lot and always bring on wipes. This year I will be adding a face mask .I am concerned about travelling this year with the coronavirus. I hope that the airlines will be more proactive and at the very least provide a more sanitary environment.
This is nothing compared to indian trains
@carin Yep
Indian trains are the ultimate tests your immunity has to stand against. If you can do a journey without falling sick, you my friend have achieved immortality.
@carin you are just immortal !!
Just kidding, i am an indian, i travel within india via trains and flights. I do pretty ok as well. My comment was just as hyped as this episode of CBC.
I just know, that where ever you swab this planet, you will find life and that's what it makes it our habitat. You just have to be immune to the common microbials, which indeed comes from exposure and falling sick at times.
It's just how you live life, knowing that microbials are everywhere should not scare anyone with functional immune system.
While i believe everyone should be scared of fatal diseases and try to keep cleanliness to prevent outbreaks.
@@awesomenitin I hope your okay with the water thing right now
My neighbors always joke about how I take out my Clorox wipes, clean everything and let dry before sitting and touching. I wash my hands thoroughly every step of the way, from the airport to the rental. I genuinely do not care what anyone thinks, never have. I have never gotten sick from traveling and I travel frequently.
I'm old enough to remember having to dress up to go to the airport to pick up a family member or take a flight. A cleaning crew--not stewardesses---a proper cleaning crew were coming on as you left the plane or met them leaving as you came aboard. This is disgusting! No excuses. This isn't like riding a bus! If they charged a bus fare rate, then that would be one thing, but this is an airplane for god's sake and an air fare price tag. Clean your jets! And don't cite Boeing as any great moral authority on anything! They can't even be bothered to send out safe jets to companies.
I laugh at this, what do you think busses are like. That bus driver does not wipe those seats down during the day.
I was an airplane cleaner and I can say that during the day we had sometimes little to no time to clean the planes, we basically just picked up trash in the seats and re stocked items. I always wiped down the bathrooms but that depends who's cleaning. The seatbelts get wiped off if someone pukes on it and that's about it. Always bring sanitizer with you, so you can wipe off the tray table or the windows and limit touching the seatbelts.. cleanest time to get on an airplane is a red eye (early morning) because they might have an overnight crew do deep cleaning.
I’m from the US and I’ve been binge watching Canadian shows, etc. 😂
The very best Canadian show is Steve Wallis camping. Young or old, Couch potato or active. you’re going to love his Thursday shows. We call him the Bob Ross of camping and he has the wonderful voice that can just put you to sleep. He sometimes includes his elusive beautiful wife and Glenn, his crazy neighbor.
08:16 thanks for scarring my childhood .... *permanently!*
May explain why I was horrifically sick after my last Westjet flight.
Love the knowledge
Sitting on a park bench, the pic-nick table at a park, using a public toilet is not much different.
As someone with a degree of germophobia, I can't say I'm surprised at the headrest results. I have always had issues using headrests unless I had a hood I could wear to protect myself and then discard and wash afterwards.
I get pneumonia most times I fly a couple days later
CORONA: hi 👋🏻
C.B.C. marketplace. A terrific ,enjoyable show. Greetings from the Philippines.
Imagine all the people starting at them cleaning the seats like a undercover clean up crew😂
Once I got on a United Airlines flight and a cockroach ran over my sandaled foot. Nasty. I told a flight attendant and he just said "ew!"
21:42 There are so many scams going on in Canada. I want to know if us, Americans have scams too, and the only thing we can relate is the scam calls!
thank you for the info!!!
My daughter and I always got bronchitis after flights. I really never want to fly again ever lol. So totally gross. When I go on buses or trains here I wash my hands right after, and do not touch my face at all. Many many people do not wash their hands after going to the bathroom and then they touch everything! Then there's the coughing and sneezing, there really isn't an escape for the airborne particles apart from masks and it's just not a thing where I live. So I just have my little hand wipes I use before I eat out. And give my hands a good scrub when I get home..... That video was so scary. Those headrests were terrifying. I have autoimmune disorders so I am a bit neurotic about clean bathrooms and kitchens. Thanks for the information marketplace.
THE HEADREST WAS THE DIRTIEST PART SIMPLY BECAUSE WHEN PEOPLE WALK BY THE TENDENCY IS TO TOUCH THE HEADREST BY OUR HANDS ESPECIALLY WHEN WE WALK OUT OF THE PLANE.
Unknown somebody can jackoff.. ans touch the headrest
WHY ARE YOU YELLING?
It`s not only because of that. It`s also because all the dirt and grease from people`s hair and the sweat from their necks get absorbed by the headrest.
Unknown and using it for balance to reach overhead compartments
I just flew from LA to New York last month, the flight safety instructions were all stained in coffee, the seat was full of hairs and dirty spots, felt so sick for the five hour flight
watching this as a frequent flier is unsettling
A family member of mine works for PSA as a flight attendant, which is a regional subsidiary flying for American Eagle, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Airlines. She says she isn’t surprised as all, as the turn arounds are super fast, and cleaning takes a back seat to safety, food items, and other creature comforts.🤢 The other thing is in some cases, you have to ask yourself why people would be so disgusting.
3:38 bruh that lady put the mask on backwards
It's not a bad idea or waste of time to travel with Lysol or other disinfectant wipes. Use them to wipe down your table, armrests or even your hands as to travel. I went on a cruise and first time in the cabin I wiped down every thing, doors/handles, walls counters, chairs, night stands, wall switches and everything. Took 10 minutes to disinfect where I'll be living for a week.
sailingsolar That was smart.
Pressurized cannisters are not allowed in most airports if not all. Disinfectant wipes are a better choice.
I always buy a mini empty sprayer ( around 60ml - 100 ml ) & fill it with antiseptic liquid. I put it inside a zip-lock bag & keep it inside my purse. Sometimes I take several mini sprayers & fill them with glass cleaner, bathroom cleaner & kitchen cleaner & put them inside the luggage bag. I also buy a can of pledge to clean the furniture in the hotel lol ..it takes few minutes to finish cleaning everything. I also bring my own bed sheets, mini pillow, mini iron with ironing sheet & mini water boiler + coffee & snacks ...etc haha that's what I do for 2-5 days short trips.
sailingsolar I do that too & I run a hotel.
As someone who use to clean planes I would like to say it’s not our fault some of the stuff isn’t being cleaned as it should be. We are given a time limit for every plane and if we go pass that time limit it costs the company money because now the plane is being delayed because of cleaning. The company I worked for literally told us to not worry about certain things. Like the crumbs that will be in the pockets or gum stuck on the seat. I remember I was wiping the tray tables down and my supervisor literally stopped me and told me to not do that because it would take up time. I would like to about that Spirit Airlines are one of the most clean planes I’ve worked on.
OMG! I* caught typhoid on a cruise ship! Prolly got it on the plane over. So many filthy places! So little time!
It won't surprise me if there were all sorts of bacteria on the plane. There's so many people on the plane, some can be sick, some don't wash their hands...
12:44 ...so you weren't going to take a shower when you got home until you heard that?
Lol fr
I have 2 Autoimmune diseases. Makes me 2 never want 2 fly again! Scary! Thank u 4 ur investigation.
thank you ok, your sharing is very useful, I love you very much❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤
We knew that those blanket wasn't wash every flight, as long as it "LOOKS CLEAN ENOUGH"
I would gladly pay $10 more for clean covers and thorough wipe down.
Lancelot Xavier and an hour of overtime?
I love watching these!!
ok, your sharing is very useful, I love you very much❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Why am i watching this one day before taking a flight :/
Those toilet even worse.
...not gonna lie, my neck was bobbin' during the music at the beginning 0:20 😂
I bring my own antibacterial wipes and wipe everything. I skip the pillow and blankets. Bleh
Wow! I was sick with a bad chest cold after a long flight, but we have to fly so from now on I will wear medical masks for the duration of the flights
So glad we saw this! Thx. Treat flight environment like hotel and wipe it down.

I was expecting someone to yell “HERE ARE YOUR STARTING REPORTERS!”
He tests for all kinds of bacteria, like yeast and mold.
Hm... Yeast and mold are fungi!?
I always travel with packets of individual wet ones. Wipe wipe wipe!
great job !!!
I always bring my own pillow. Use flight pillow to cradle my lower back. Bought a flight blanket new from an independent vendor. I use my own ear buds. New learning: carry germ wipes and gloves, keep my (lightweight) hoodie up. New ideas: wipe down window area where I might rest my head, carry a large zip lock to line the front pocket for my personal items. Thanks for a great heads up.
Lesley Claster and put travel pillow in ziplock until you can wash it.
well if this is on flights what about buses?.
toilet handle is unfair because fecal matter will arise after first customer.
Awe, poor lady was so tired she said antibiotic wipes. Hope the antibacterial wipes prevented the ladder of the travel blues; otherwise antibiotics could be in her near future!
I am getting my own blanket next time I fly. At least those germs will be mine 😂
Whats in the air in an airplane in 2020?
Answer :coronavirus😋
