Personally I think ALL jewelry not just "kids" jewelry shouldn't allow toxic materials in their products.
Is it SAFE for a human of ANY AGE to wear costume jewelry that has not been tested for cadmium and/or lead content?

Costume jewelry is plastic

Especially since children wear adult jewelry all the time
I'm surprised H&M was good.
I'm surprised ALDO wasn't
@Kira Mccoy h&m is in the fast fashion industry and their products are extremely cheap (both in price and, for many items, quality) though. so that's the shock of having that degree of quality control

I don't think we have something like this in the US. This show is so good.
You mean like this show or the cadmium? Cause I think 9 on your side does something similar to this show.
A lot of local news stations in the states still do good in depth investigative reporting, but I still love watching this show!
We need a show like this in the us Canadians are lucky
Fortunately we get CBC on Comcast in the states.
Don't think we have it here in England but you never know
While the fashion jewelry in stores is alluring, my body has its own defense mechanism against "the cheap stuff;" I can't wear anything less than sterling silver or gold, otherwise I'll have an allergic reaction. It's disgusting that the corporations willingly put workers and consumers at risk, for the sake of making money.
Woah, I actually react the same way. Once I bought a $2 necklace from a nightmarket in my country, wore it for a few minutes and it got itchy. This was a bad idea, but I licked it and found out the taste was different from safe metal.
I'm allergic to anything but sterling silver
Same if the jewelry is not sold behind the case I dont trust it. Only gold and sterling silver for me.
That also happens to me, my ears start itching and if I wear a “cheap” necklace I get red itchy bumps.
Me too. Got my ears pierced when I was thirteen, and I had horrible reactions to almost any earrings I wore. I didn’t know why it was, and so I stopped wearing earrings even though I loved them. It’s really upsetting to hear about this, because I have a daughter and I would have bought her jewelry in stores like those. Not anymore. If she does wear jewelry I’ll make it for her myself.
Why are Canadian companies so shady? At least the Chinese "factories" are honest. Cadmium is cheap and saves fuel cost for melting.
Not just Canadian companies. US companies are worse.
It ain't just Canada, y'know.
just because action will actually be made if they come clean and theyll lose business. As they said in china they are "stricter" about cadmium but its easily bought and stores openly sell jewelry made of cadmium so that means that the laws may be stricter its just the police who enforce it aren't
Because western companies have an image they want to protect, while Chinese producers have no image or label they want to preserve, they are just a white label producer.
Steven Zheng at the risk to the public so in the long run it would be more expensive if they were to be sued
“You’re on private property” is Arden’s answer to high levels of toxic metals in their products.... ‘you are the weakest link’ GOODBYE! Time to put this bunch of ethical misfits out of business folks....
I couldn't have said this better myself. Shame on these companies/people. I don't believe that company Arden is going to make changes. If they do, I'm sure they will be gradually doing so, so they can say they are making a difference.
I really hate that store, everything smells like cancerous plastic and chemicals. Also, I live on the border and they're one of the only stores that says "Sorry, we take American money at par" essentially, if you're American you're paying a 30% markup. Not ethical
Arden is over party?
Who else is on a marathon?
Colin Gordon I don’t even remember how I started, but here I am 6 episodes in!

Im on a marathon. I just keep seeing the suggested videos and then thinking I need to know the truth

James Pagous I don’t think this is the shook you’re talking about
That Arden Rep was extremely rude. My goodness 😬😨😱
Hahahaha she was freaked out. Probably didn't want to get reprimanded or fired for saying the wrong thing.
She was just doing her job honestly
The regulator guy looks like he doesn't understand his job roles and responsibility. He acted like he was not very concerned and parenting can fix the problem of keeping cadmium products from kids. Shame.
Because he'd get fired if he states his personal opinion. He does finally let his opinion show in the end there, but not in a way that can incriminate him.
I've noticed that most of the time when Marketplace talks to Government officials they deflect and seem really unhelpful. But that's how it is in the US too, really everywhere. Have to play it safe to keep your job.
That periodic table mouse pad is cool.
Baking Queen oh hell yeah, as a nerd I want one and feel incomplete without it
They probably have some for sale on eBay Amazon and Mercari
Where?
What canada should just do is test one piece of every load of jewelry at random and if the cadmium or dangerous heavy metals guidelines they should confiscate it. After that the company who ordered that should be fined 50k.
why 50k? How about get fined 1000$ for every piece of it they were trying to import?
Justin G Isn't that what Trading Standards are for?
How about the company owner gets thrown in jail with no bail?
big penalty from any piece of Cadmium jewelry found could stop Canadians' jewelry store purchase any piece from China.
At least a fine that would put a dent into company profits, so that it wouldn’t be sustainable for the company
and even though i'm not a child anymore, i still bite onto my ring.
yikes.
Dirty Jaem Jaem It’s okay if it isn’t cheap stuff, like it should be real gold, sterling silver, stuff like that.

I wonder if anyone’s ever tested the beads and jewelry making supplies that they sell at Michael’s or similar craft stores.
Meghan Pesclovitch as a designer I don't buy findings at Michaels. If I am allergic to it, then there is crap in the metals. I buy from legit suppliers to ensure my creations are allergy free, and safe. I can't touch just any metal. I break out into rashes or fingers swell up. Stone beads are ok from Michaels, the sterling, but beware of chinese crystal its bad lead.
Rosemary Lucy Cosentino Canadian Fine Artist hi! I like to make my own jewelry and I have bought a lot of beads from Michael's… Do you think the Swarovski type of beads are OK? I try to stay away from the mirrored/reflective glass beads though
darkprince56 The Swarovski sold there seems legit but especially made for Michael's. I think it's ok to get you out of a jam, but not for proper jewelry making other than crafting embellishing for fun. Everything at Michael's involving their jewelry is ok for personal use, learning to make jewelry, but I would not sell it. Maybe stone beads are alright their sterling section. But once you go to a wholesaler, you see the huge difference in quality. I stick to alot of stainless steel and you can't get that there. I love that they have a section, but I hope that the average person who walks in, is educated about the dangers in the materials. I have always been since my allergies started in childhood. I could never wear costume jewelry until I started making it
Rosemary Lucy Cosentino Canadian Fine Artist thank you so much for replying I appreciate it!
Or the little metal charms they sell for sewing and stuff
Don't buy from these companies. They can't even talk to them about the cadmium. They don't care how dangerous it is especially for children. So pathetic.
I was so worried that H&M had chemicals in them bc a MAJORITY of my jewelry are from H&M lol
They do have chemicals in them. So does everything else.
could've been just the stuff they bought that was ok
how are we supposed to know as consumers, when we go into a store that any of those products that we may want to buy, is going to contain lead? Cadmium?
cassie D you don’t, research the manufacturers for those companies, there are many companies that sell safe jewelry and tbh you can make your own for way cheaper and safer materials
It's best to stick with stainless steel jewelry, it's cheap and it's nice.
Save up until you can buy that real silver or gold piece. And don't be afraid of vintage stuff. You can get some really good deals on Etsy, just for example.
buy one of those handheld scanners in the video lmao or just don't buy cheap jewelry

Yep, a year later but everything is fine and dandy until it makes companies pay more.
Over 90% cadmium? Sounds like a pretty cheap relatively pure source of cadmium for lab work.
what purpose do you have for cadmium?
@@jintie make jewelry for children
This is the rule in China, there are lots of rules but no enforcement. When officials come around, as with Mexico and south Asian countries bribes make the officials find nothing. China signed the Paris accord to reduce emissions, yet look at the air everywhere in China or the color of the rivers, ponds and lakes. Nobody is doing anything but making rules they have no intention to follow. The "strict" Chinese requirements are tougher than Canada's, that's great but you found 100% cadmium products right? So what good are the rules?
Bobby Paluga
Other countries have high demand for cheap low quality items from China because most cannot afford good quality/ expensive items.
That’s why China keeps producing them (emissions) and make money off of you guys.
If you have a problem, do something about it. Boycott all items that’s “Made in China” 🙄 pretty hard to do right? 90% of things you buy comes from China. The world can’t survive without them
I have some mecican gold chains that say CH14K, which is what many companies will do to make people think they have 14K gold, if it says CH it's plated.
Ok but same was with other countries when they were in their developing phase. Everyone now shits on China like they never done it but China wasjust late for it's industrial developlent unlike west europe and US
their rules applied, when any fellow citizen release the truth/bad news against the government or governmental based companies, or when government want to take wealth from anyone.

Rex I get allergic reactions to it so not for meeee
i by no means am trying to justify any of this nonsense by making it sound less serious but i do think that an allergic reaction is a lot less harmful than ingesting it. yes you can get a reaction but i think the chances of the reactions being so bad that'd you'd have to go to hospital are quite slim.
Rex I suffered from a serious infection as a kid from cheap Clair’s earrings and can no longer wear any earrings but okay

If you're not allergic, gold is pretry good too. Also, unless you're completely metal intolerant, titanium is okay because its completely inert. Surgical stainless steel is perfectly fine as well. Silver is only really okay if its Stirling, if it isn't, it doesn't have to be mostly silver. (From someone super allergic to every metal save Sterling silver, surgical stainless steel, and titanium).

What about cadium used in watercolors or other paints? Does it only do harm if the cadium levels are high?
To my knowledge there may be. There was all kinds of metals and toxins used in old paints but modern day batches tends to be tamer/more regulated. I would never suggest consuming it and always wash your hands just in case. Also Cadmium is a shade, so just because it says 'cadmium yellow' it may not actually contain cadmium. I would say if you are really worried to check the warnings and labels- especially with oil paints and thinners.
I know this is 5 months late, but there are brands that use and dont use cadmium. If I were you I would look at what is banned in California if you're unsure about which paints are safe. :D
I myself have thrown out tubes before that contained lead. Cadmium is only unsafe in its powdered form where it causes respiratory issues, because of the oil or other factors in paints. The substance is rendered unabsorbable even on human skin.
If you don't smear paint with our fingers and don't make brush point with your lips they are safe.
@@ulutiu well if you leave the paint on your hands for a long time or paint your hand purposely

oh, wow, Canada!, good exposé!..and sad thing is, no one wants to learn their own 'bottom line' is dependent upon such evil - maybe even individuals who are 'only' in-store reps or cashiers who somehow, accidentally, learn the truth??..but then what about higher-ups (managers, execs on up to CEO's & CFO's, who have known most of or *all* of the time, who didn't care and, so, who did nothing (except to continue to promote their business products).. heartbreaking..but I guess only for those who have a heart and a soul.
How can the consumer test the jewelry themselves ? Is there a kit ?

Yes, they sell kits for almost ever heavy metal
Evelyn Echevarrias No. You could get into science and do some home chemistry.
I am American and I love watching CBC. Cadmium isn't even something that I knew to worry about and I am sure that plenty of it passes into America just like it does in Canada.
I'm so happy Clair's test out OK,
watching this and on my left there is a "first earrings" set in my night drawer...
There's lots of toxic things kids shouldn't put in their mouths and jewellery is just another one of them.
Make me ask the question: how do we tell what has cadmium in it when we buy it? Cause we have different stores and different things. How do we tell when we buy it for us or our babies?
I am so thankful for this show. So many government departments are not doing their jobs!
Comment section: What's the point of having rules and regulations when they're aren't enforced?
Me: To illicit BLIND TRUST in the consumer so that they OBEY & CONSUME.
I remember when I was younger I bought earrings from a shop. Can't remember what shop or the price but they basically gave me a reaction where my ears were infected and the infected mass was hard as a rock and had it removed. Had a massive hole left but thank God it healed.

Wow! Very impressive investigation. Wish there were more shows like this!
I just wanted to clarify that, Chinese factories accept manufacturing orders from brands and they only follow and make what the contract says. People should blame the brands that do not set appropriate guidelines for factories. If "cadmium cannot be used" was said in contrasts, industries must follow it or they would get in trouble.
Thank you for covering this

Arden's response to an issue being brought to their attention was so rude and offputting. They've talked me out of spending any money with them.

"They are employing good corporate responsibility and, that's what they should have been doing all along." That's the thing about corporate responsibility, "it's not a problem until someone complains." Companies employ quality inspectors and auditors. It doesn't mean the people in those roles are allowed to do their jobs. I've been that employee. I was repremanded and, had my employment threatened for the simple act of doing my job. Bet your money that I was to blame when someone finally found the time to complain about their products. Boss: "Where were you? What were you doing when that happened?" Me: "I was there. I did my regularly scheduled audit. I saw a problem and documented it. I had a solution and brought it to your attention. YOU told me that YOU would handle it." Boss: "You never told me about this." Me: "I did. It's written on paper, filed in my desk with all the audits that YOU reviewed, checked off and gave back to me at the meeting, where you told me that wasn't a problem. Also, I emailed you about it." Boss "Prove it. Find me that document." "Funny how those particular audits always seem to go missing, after I file them with all the others boss."... I had two coworkers, who also documented the same issues on different shifts. Our documentation always seemed to up and grow legs so management could pass down the blame.
What sector is this so I know to avoid it when choosing career paths
CEOs only are concerned about higher profits. They'll never do anything on quality, safety of products unless they are obligated to do so directly. Because these measures always require higher costs of production, this minimizing their profits. Regulations are there to protect the customers and we also need to learn to make smart choices. But how can an ordinary person know which product is safe and which is not, just by looking at the stores???
I'm an American living in Japan and I can't stop watching Marketplace!
Wow.. I never liked news or even TV at all, but this is so addicting and exciting to watch.

They took the old story and put a bit at the end about what progress had been made since the original episode. Sneaky if you ask me because the CBC is passing it off as "new content" despite it not being new! Instead they should've cut it to just the ending parts and stuck it at the end of an actual new episode or made it a RUclips exclusive.

I don't buy jewelry that often for partner as we're borderline minimalists, and if I had a daughter, I wouldn't allow her to wear jewelry anyway since it's useless crap and sends the message that she has to be pretty to be respected and to be pretty, she has to have material goods that sparkle and shine, or show off her body a/o wealth.
