Any one metal detecting in the UK needs the permission of the land owner, public place or not. If you do not have permission and have a metal detector you can be arrested for going equiped to steel.
Legal is the undoing of God's laws, legal has nothing to do with anything other than anything legal is fraud and a crime, as long as you are lawful you can do anything, the law LAND AIR WATER is your dominon over this realm and your shared custodianship of this place and therefore do no harm unto others.

Good to see you again Julian. You need to get clued up on trespass law if you're going to metal detect on land without the landowner's consent. Its far more complicated than public photography and is part of the law of torts, which are normally civil matters. I dare say the police will make a complete balls up of their dealings with it and the potential for a successful civil claim against them must be pretty good. I've been a detector user for over 40 years and was at one point in time the secretary of Gwent MDC and I've never been bothered by the police. I regularly detect public open space and can recover coins and other small obects without leaving a trace. If there is no damage there is no trespass claim to be pursued. If they don't know who you are, that also helps greatly. Good luck and stay safe.
