Dude was in the ring for 15 rounds with Larry Holmes. The fact that he can still talk AND has a sense of humor about him shows just how tough of a dude he is.
Prime Larry Holmes at that Larry was 40-0 going into the fight with Tex. Larry would get to 48-0 before finally losing to Michael Spinks twice and Mike Tyson once. Larry Holmes doesn't get enough recognition amongst the all time greats because he didn't have any great competition. Larry Holmes was born the same year as George Foreman if Big George didn't retire in the 70's we'd have had some all time great fights between the 2 of those incredible fighters.

I met "Tex" many years ago after boxing and Hollywood. He was the nicest, most down home man I have ever met. I will always remember his huge, and I mean huge hands. He talked about the crooked fighting in professional boxing and it was plain to see that there was so much more going on then we will ever know. All in all, a good dude!
I met him too several years ago in Philadelphia at a boxing event at the Blue Horizon venue. Like you said he was very nice, down to earth guy! He shook our hands and his hands and features were bigger than average. I’m 6’2 230lbs. and his hands made mine look like child’s hands! Great man who I’ll never forget!! He made the experience incredible!!
Tex has always been a great talk show guest. Self-deprecating humor and just an overall friendly guy. No ego at all, and often spoke highly of his opponents in the ring.

I have always said that about Johnny Carson, he broke the mold. Nothing is as ever or will ever be what Johnny made his late night show. Johnny was just so naturally funny and he brought the best out of everyone. Today's hosts especially after Letterman retired or to controlled and politically correct. I do not like any of today's late night personalities. They are as bad as mainstream media. Johnny will always be number one and then Letterman and the one guy who is always overlooked and doesn't get no where near the credit he deserves is Arsenio Hall.
Nobody could take a punch like Randall. All the shots he took over the years in boxing, and he's still sharp and has a great sense of humor. He's 72 now.

Two of my favorite real men. Tex was one of the toughest men to ever walk this spinning ball. An Johnny was one that made you realize how blessed we really are. Humor makes life easier.
I’m in Denton Texas right now visiting my daughter and granddaughter for the Fourth of July. They recently moved here from Washington state where I live. I enjoy visiting. The people seem to be friendly.
He had carson..laughing his ass..off..which is really hard to do..you could tell..randalls..face was still swallowen..from tge beating he took. He made rocky balboas..beating. look like child's play..from what he went through..
You can watch the fight on RUclips. I watched the fight live Randall Cobb was from a town just down the road from us at the time. Mr. Cobb was not effective at moving his head not upper body and took viscous blows that would have knocked out any other boxers in the heavyweight class. Holmes literally beat on him for 15 rounds while Howard Cosell commented and made pleas to stop the fight. I don’t remember Tex Cobb being wobbled once. He would steadily take combinations to the head and keep stepping forward and hit Larry Holmes once. There were calls to stop boxing in those days. A short time before this fight a Korean boxer last name of Kem or Kim was killed in a boxing match so public scrutiny was very high on the sport. It was not a good exhibition for the public to witness at the time. Tex Cobb was one tough customer. Larry Holmes just knew that this fight was bad politics for the sport in general. Cobb did land a few good shots that lacked just a fraction of angle from being devastating. He just took viscous shots to set himself up to that point and he did it numerous times.
@@hughobrien4139 Yeah, Tex had a habit of blocking punches with his face. Holmes had way better technique and just stayed out of Cobb's range while he beat the living hell out of him. Tex was just not a skilled enough boxer to hang with Larry. Now if that had been a kickboxing contest, Tex would probably have smashed Holmes in five rounds or so. Tex a was a fighter, and a great one, but boxing requires skills he didn't really have.
A lot of boxers back then had amazing personalities… Great interviews. This is why he also made movies. Johnny was the absolutely greatest ever at bringing out the best from his guests, no matter who they were or what they did.
I admit, it took me a second to catch what Tex meant -- Holmes' hands are going to fold from slamming them against Tex's head so many times. . . Regardless, the guy was tough as leather and a great guest.
I met Tex Cobb at a restaurant in Detroit in the 80's. Shaking his hand was like wrapping my hand around a small Virginia ham. I'm a former boxer and bodybuilder and thank him for his patience with me because I was drunk at the time. Randall " Tex" Cobb - a good and generous man.
I was a bouncer at The Hollywood Palace on Vine, around 1985, The Temptations were playing, I escorted Jim Brown to the private vip booth, we shook hands, his hand was massive with a vice grip, you could tell this is a very strong man

A hidden gem of a movie. I have to watch it every time it comes on. Nicolas Cage as H.I. was great, I loved the fight in the trailer with John Goodman (Gale). When H.I. was about to strike him two handed from above and scraped his hands on the low roof and screamed in pain. LOL Or the line from William Forsyth (Etyl) "We released ourselves on our own recognizance" after him and Gale escaped prison. Eytl to elderly southern store keeper "Do these balloons blow up into funny shapes?" Storekeeper replies, "Well, no, unless round is funny." Was it his DipTet?
I met Larry Holmes not too long ago. His hands were gigantic. Tex had a huge set of stones to fight him. Larry’s hands were like cinder blocks. One of the most underrated champions.

I remember watching an interview with Larry Holmes soon after the fight where the interviewer asked him "What was the biggest contributor to your victory?" and Holmes answered something like ... "The fact that Tex doesn't know how to box". He didn't mean it as an insult, he was pointing out that if Tex knew how to throw a punch as good as he could take one he'd have been unstoppable.
It wasn't until I was out of high school, and was staying with my grandparents (spring & summer 1968), that I discovered Johnny Carson. My grandmother would stay up almost every night to watch his show.😄 And I got hooked too.😊

@@davemccreary9184 Holmes was an absolute beast. Way past his prime in the Tyson fight. A great champion. I’m not sure Tyson with his limited skill set would have won it. Tysons brutality and aura of invincibility in his early days was his style. Opponents were beaten before the bell usually. It would have been a great fight for sure.
I never knew he was a boxer before an actor. The first time I saw him was in "Uncommon Valor" when I was little. He looked and sounded so much like my mom's brother that he was my instant favorite. I loved him in "Raising Arizona!" 😊
I became acquainted with Randall when he was training/fighting in Springfield, MO over the course of several months of 1987. The hotel lounge (Merlins) of the Hilton he was staying in was my club of choice. He had seen me in the club several times, and eventually asked me about restaurants I liked in Springfield. Several nights later he asked if I would dance with his lady friend, as he was tired from training all day, and she was much younger, and ready to dance. The DJ at Merlin's spun the best dance songs. Randall was generous, witty, and one of the most intelligent athletes I've met in person. He was my hero before he started making hit movies.
I saw Tex Cobb at a dinner with Larry Holmes on video. Tex was very funny and had Larry laughing about everything that happened before, during and after the fight.
I thought it was in this interview, but he was once asked about Howard Cosell saying after seeing that fight he would never do another boxing match. Tex replied "Hell I'd fight Holmes again if it would make him quit Monday Night Football!"
Howard somehow managed to be everywhere in sports coverage and loved to talk about Howard. Randall sounds too smart to listen to John Madden as well. Funny thing is; John Madden earned a Super Bowl Ring as HC of the Raiders. So how does someone that knowledgeable about (American) football manage to waste so much time talking about so little? I'll say this for Madden and others, I went from watching too much football to watching no sports at all. I should thank them.

I remember working with this man. He "as big of a man as he was" was always so kind to everybody. It didn't matter what you position in life was, you placed everybody high up on a capital, as if he was waiting to learn from you and he would listen intently. Such a super kind man, and he truly enjoyed speaking with people, even people he did know, or people who didn't know him or of his various fighting events and types or movies he was involved in.. I have to mention this, If he was poor broke, and you all were at the chuck wagon line or today's as it is know, "The Roach Coach" for lunch, and you forgot your wallet, or were poor yourself, he would make an excuse for himself, and say, "Ah, I am just not in the mood to eat this stuff today, it is good stuff, but I have had it every day this month, I am gonna head back an heat up a frozen pizza" and you give you his $1.75 for get your food and drink. And you would never know that he would just skip his meal so you could eat. Now granted, $1.75 for food back then, was like $14 bucks today for lunch.. pending where you are at in the nation. He always had something not only soft or pleasant to say about any and all situations, but, would actually know of a story or experience that would be so perfectly fitting to help you see a positive in life that the person could relate to and you actually would feel up-lifted. He was natural at doing that. I wonder if there is a documentary of his life out there, as I think I would enjoy reading that. perhaps, maybe a documentary in the film format? Either way, I wonder if he still has an agent that would allow an old tier to have a chat with him. It is very likely that I wouldn't be remembered, as I really didn't have anything memorable to offer a man of such a high caliber of kindness, but, I would enjoy telling him, how much I always respected his kind nature to everybody. I can tell you, to see some of the TV and movie roles he would play, often times he would play the "bad guy or villain" and beings I knew how he was in real life, "A super nice guy" it was hard to watch those gigs...lol... He wouldn't punch a guy for no reason and then throw hi through the front window...lol.. Yes, I know, it is just acting.. but, just odd to see that portrayal from a nice guy. You know what, someone like him, it wouldn't shock me, if he might not remember your name, but, with a little bit of back story, from 40 plus years ago, that he would then say "OH YA, I remember you know" and then start rapping off the subject matters in which we had talked about and the days before, during and after.. He just seems like that is likely with his nature... ?

I first discovered Tex from an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger. Something about him just drew me towards him. Been a fan ever since. Tough son of gun. My God.
I fell in love with him when he played "Sailor" in Uncommon Valor, alongside Gene Hackman, Patrick Swayze, and Fred Ward. Didn't know he was a boxer at first, nor that he was so articulate and hilarious; but I've since learned. ;-)
This guy is a complete stud. Humble, honest and genuinely talented in front of the camera. … watch “ Uncommon Valor.” If he was boxing in the first half of the last century … he would have earned a bunch of wins in the ring with his guts and jaw. As it is… he was never a quitter and would take a load of punishment just in principle. That alone is pretty scarce these days. I was in New York on business some years back and recognized him walking by and asked him if he was Mr. Cobb . He grinned that signature smile, stuck out his hand and said” hell no, I’m Randall. I am not a little guy ( 6’4” and about 240 at the time) but he had the hands of a gorilla and a handshake I will not forget. Everything about him exhumed power at that moment and a gentle good humor as well. A special man.

He was willing to fight Holmes again, it was Holmes that was unwilling to give it another go…. Sounds like Cobb was winning the fight to me….

I watched the fight live Randall Cobb was from a town just down the road from us at the time.
Mr. Cobb was not effective at moving his head not upper body and took viscous blows that would have knocked out any other boxers in the heavyweight class. Holmes literally beat on him for 15 rounds while Howard Cosell commented and made pleas to stop the fight.
I don’t remember Tex Cobb being wobbled once. He would steadily take combinations to the head and keep stepping forward and hit Larry Holmes once.
There were calls to stop boxing in those days. A short time before this fight a Korean boxer last name of Kem or Kim was killed in a boxing match so public scrutiny was very high on the sport.
It was not a good exhibition for the public to witness at the time.
Tex Cobb was one tough customer. Larry Holmes just knew that this fight was bad politics for the sport in general.
Cobb did land a few good shots that lacked just a fraction of angle from being devastating. He just took viscous shots to set himself up to that point and he did it numerous times.
@@hughobrien4139 Yeah, Tex had a habit of blocking punches with his face. Holmes had way better technique and just stayed out of Cobb's range while he beat the living hell out of him. Tex was just not a skilled enough boxer to hang with Larry. Now if that had been a kickboxing contest, Tex would probably have smashed Holmes in five rounds or so. Tex a was a fighter, and a great one, but boxing requires skills he didn't really have.

How can you not like that guy? According to his Wikipedia page, he eventually graduated from college with honors. Seems like a good guy.
A lot of boxers back then had amazing personalities… Great interviews. This is why he also made movies. Johnny was the absolutely greatest ever at bringing out the best from his guests, no matter who they were or what they did.
"We planned on His legs folding, but after 10 rounds, that strategy changed to His hands are gonna fold". Priceless.
I admit, it took me a second to catch what Tex meant -- Holmes' hands are going to fold from slamming them against Tex's head so many times. . . Regardless, the guy was tough as leather and a great guest.
I met Tex Cobb at a restaurant in Detroit in the 80's. Shaking his hand was like wrapping my hand around a small Virginia ham. I'm a former boxer and bodybuilder and thank him for his patience with me because I was drunk at the time. Randall " Tex" Cobb - a good and generous man.

I was a bouncer at The Hollywood Palace on Vine, around 1985, The Temptations were playing, I escorted Jim Brown to the private vip booth, we shook hands, his hand was massive with a vice grip, you could tell this is a very strong man

I remember he had one of the funniest lines when being interviewed by Joan Rivers. She asked him if he had any brothers and who was the biggest. He looked at her and said that would depend on where you measured us.

A hidden gem of a movie. I have to watch it every time it comes on. Nicolas Cage as H.I. was great, I loved the fight in the trailer with John Goodman (Gale). When H.I. was about to strike him two handed from above and scraped his hands on the low roof and screamed in pain. LOL

I met Larry Holmes not too long ago. His hands were gigantic. Tex had a huge set of stones to fight him. Larry’s hands were like cinder blocks. One of the most underrated champions.
Larry Holmes -- the most under-rated Heaveyeight Champion in history -- reigned for 7 years -- My wife and niece visited Larry in his Easton, PA office -- he was very polite, and not thuggish like Mike Tyson. MUCH RESPECT !!
Larry has twenty three inch biceps he's defended his title more than any other boxer . He dodged no one he's.like you want to fight ok let's go a few more million sounds good to me the winner gets paid more anyway like the man said let's play tag and your always it. Cobb was also a heavyweight kick boxing champ. He is the best live interview character in boxing. The man has a great sense of humor.

I just sprayed my milk with his "His eyes are brown" comment about the doctor's comment about the brutality of boxing.
It was rare to see Carson laugh that hard, so his whole body moved and turned that much, and he looked so surprised.

I met the guy in Philly a few times, and with his stories he could put on a one-man show on Broadway. Favorite line (out of dozens): he says he was never knocked down in a boxing or kick-boxing match, but he was knocked out cold in a bar fight by a Mexican bantamweight. How? "Two of my friends were swinging him around by his ankles at the time."

One of the funniest lines I ever heard came from Tex. When Howard Cossell said he was going to stop doing boxing because of the Holmes - Cobb fight, Tex said, “if Howard would agree to stop doing football, I would fight Holmes again”.

I remember watching an interview with Larry Holmes soon after the fight where the interviewer asked him "What was the biggest contributor to your victory?" and Holmes answered something like ... "The fact that Tex doesn't know how to box".
He didn't mean it as an insult, he was pointing out that if Tex knew how to throw a punch as good as he could take one he'd have been unstoppable.

Tysons brutality and aura of invincibility in his early days was his style. Opponents were beaten before the bell usually. It would have been a great fight for sure.

I never knew he was a boxer before an actor. The first time I saw him was in "Uncommon Valor" when I was little. He looked and sounded so much like my mom's brother that he was my instant favorite. I loved him in "Raising Arizona!" 😊
I became acquainted with Randall when he was training/fighting in Springfield, MO over the course of several months of 1987. The hotel lounge (Merlins) of the Hilton he was staying in was my club of choice. He had seen me in the club several times, and eventually asked me about restaurants I liked in Springfield. Several nights later he asked if I would dance with his lady friend, as he was tired from training all day, and she was much younger, and ready to dance. The DJ at Merlin's spun the best dance songs. Randall was generous, witty, and one of the most intelligent athletes I've met in person. He was my hero before he started making hit movies.
I saw Tex Cobb at a dinner with Larry Holmes on video. Tex was very funny and had Larry laughing about everything that happened before, during and after the fight.
That is a hilarious and raw tribute to Holmes by Tex. Tex did not hold back. Tex is just an amazing human being with a personality as big as Texas.
And a Texan had his day in the Sun.

I thought it was in this interview, but he was once asked about Howard Cosell saying after seeing that fight he would never do another boxing match. Tex replied "Hell I'd fight Holmes again if it would make him quit Monday Night Football!"

Howard somehow managed to be everywhere in sports coverage and loved to talk about Howard.
Randall sounds too smart to listen to John Madden as well. Funny thing is; John Madden earned a Super Bowl Ring as HC of the Raiders. So how does someone that knowledgeable about (American) football manage to waste so much time talking about so little?
I'll say this for Madden and others, I went from watching too much football to watching no sports at all. I should thank them.

I remember working with this man. He "as big of a man as he was" was always so kind to everybody. It didn't matter what you position in life was, you placed everybody high up on a capital, as if he was waiting to learn from you and he would listen intently. Such a super kind man, and he truly enjoyed speaking with people, even people he did know, or people who didn't know him or of his various fighting events and types or movies he was involved in.. I have to mention this, If he was poor broke, and you all were at the chuck wagon line or today's as it is know, "The Roach Coach" for lunch, and you forgot your wallet, or were poor yourself, he would make an excuse for himself, and say, "Ah, I am just not in the mood to eat this stuff today, it is good stuff, but I have had it every day this month, I am gonna head back an heat up a frozen pizza" and you give you his $1.75 for get your food and drink. And you would never know that he would just skip his meal so you could eat. Now granted, $1.75 for food back then, was like $14 bucks today for lunch.. pending where you are at in the nation. He always had something not only soft or pleasant to say about any and all situations, but, would actually know of a story or experience that would be so perfectly fitting to help you see a positive in life that the person could relate to and you actually would feel up-lifted. He was natural at doing that. I wonder if there is a documentary of his life out there, as I think I would enjoy reading that. perhaps, maybe a documentary in the film format? Either way, I wonder if he still has an agent that would allow an old tier to have a chat with him. It is very likely that I wouldn't be remembered, as I really didn't have anything memorable to offer a man of such a high caliber of kindness, but, I would enjoy telling him, how much I always respected his kind nature to everybody.
I can tell you, to see some of the TV and movie roles he would play, often times he would play the "bad guy or villain" and beings I knew how he was in real life, "A super nice guy" it was hard to watch those gigs...lol... He wouldn't punch a guy for no reason and then throw hi through the front window...lol.. Yes, I know, it is just acting.. but, just odd to see that portrayal from a nice guy. You know what, someone like him, it wouldn't shock me, if he might not remember your name, but, with a little bit of back story, from 40 plus years ago, that he would then say "OH YA, I remember you know" and then start rapping off the subject matters in which we had talked about and the days before, during and after.. He just seems like that is likely with his nature... ?
His joke about Larry's hands not being able to take the abuse was so good, and it went over Johnny and the whole audience's heads.

I fell in love with him when he played "Sailor" in Uncommon Valor, alongside Gene Hackman, Patrick Swayze, and Fred Ward. Didn't know he was a boxer at first, nor that he was so articulate and hilarious; but I've since learned. ;-)
I met Randall on Kauai when he was there making Uncommon Valor. I had a car. He didn't. We hung out for a week. What a blast.
That was a great movie...
This guy is a complete stud. Humble, honest and genuinely talented in front of the camera. … watch “ Uncommon Valor.” If he was boxing in the first half of the last century … he would have earned a bunch of wins in the ring with his guts and jaw. As it is… he was never a quitter and would take a load of punishment just in principle. That alone is pretty scarce these days. I was in New York on business some years back and recognized him walking by and asked him if he was Mr. Cobb . He grinned that signature smile, stuck out his hand and said” hell no, I’m Randall. I am not a little guy ( 6’4” and about 240 at the time) but he had the hands of a gorilla and a handshake I will not forget. Everything about him exhumed power at that moment and a gentle good humor as well. A special man.
