Tex Cobb, was not the best heavyweight boxer, but he had heart, and was tough as nails. He could sure take a punch. At the time, Shavers was considered one of the best hard punchers in the heavyweight division.
I saw an old clip of Tex after the Holmes fight, and he is quite a character. Just his attitude and personality won me over (though I honestly don't know much about him otherwise).
Tex Cobb had an iron jaw and Shavers had the hardest overhand right in boxing history. This was a great fight. This is the first time I ever saw it. I'm an old man and I don't remember this one.
TEX MAY HAVE HAD THE BEST CHIN IN HISTORY...OF COURSE, THERE IS FOREMAN, ALI, MARCIANO, HOLMES, HOLLIFIELD, ETC. *I LOVE THEM ALL!* THOSE WERE THE DAYS!
I miss watching the great fights in the seventies free on tv. Some corporation had to find another way to squeeze a nickel from the common guy. Pay per view everything now. 🙄
Two great fighters, but that’s one of the strangest boxing clips I’ve ever seen. It’s like it was slow motion, Cobb telegraphing every punch, holding his hands low. Seemed like they were both drugged.
Tex was a big man he walked around at about 245 and would drop a few for his fights to 225 and 230 so he was a big heavyweight at that time. Wasnt fast but i'm sure them punches hurt with that much weight behind them. Plus, tex had a chin that was second to none.
Cobb was an average boxer, but you wouldn't want to cross him on the street. The dude was tough as nails and he could fight on the streets. He's not a guy that I would have messed with in real life. He was from the town I live in and he terrified dudes out here back in the day.
You shouldn't use click bait for your titles, there was no knockout to wow about in this fight. The ref (who was terrible) finally stopped it because Shavers was taking too much punishment.
I find it so crazy that people always talk about how Ernie Shavers was the hardest puncher ever..... Most people dont know who Cobb is an how he KOd Shavers and took his best punches without any problems
I think the first time I saw Tex was when he played an evil henchman in the Golden Child (until the chosen one touched his hand and he turned good!) He's also in a film called Blind Fury with Rutger Hauer which never seems to get the attention it deserves. Guess what? He plays a villain in that, too. As well as being hard as a coffin nail in real life, Tex also seems to have fun in the films he stars in.
amazing either one of them was still standing by the end of the sixth round -- poor old earnie must have been so slug nutty towards the end of his life it is truly sad
Shavers was recovering from surgery for a detached retina at the time and I suspect he was out of shape. He was 36 but he had continued to fight quite well until shortly before then. He had knocked down Larry Holmes just the year before.
Now, seriously Was that Ernie Shavers? Was he drugged or something? He didn't punch. Cobb's guard was open all through, only covering his chest. Oh man.
Cobb was a very tough guy. If Cooney had the toughness that Cobb had, I think he would have been world champ. Also I loved how Cobb made fun of himself. Saying that said I was this dangerous puncher, but basically knocked out a bunch of washer women. Cobb would go on to lose a split decsion to Horton, lose I think a majority decsions to Micael Doakes, though Doakes admited it was the toughest fight he had up to that time, though he would beat him for a second time.
Most of commenter's must have watched a different video than me. Terrible jump cuts and worse fight. 5:30 of my life wasted, at my age....not many left to waste.
I wondered what would have happened had Gerry Cooney, the original opponent went into this fight. I always felt that maybe Cooney's chin was not that great, that is why he always seemed to have injuries. I felt that his mamagers wanted him just to get that title fight with Holmes and the 10 million dollars that both rece3ived. Also with Cooney, what if he had been able to fight Mike Weaver first, and perhaps win that WBA title.
Randall TEX COBB COULD TAKE THE BIGGEST, HARDEST PUNCHES EVER THROWN BY THE HARDEST HITTING MEN OF ALL TIME. THAT DUDE WAS ONE TOUGH ASS MAN. I REMEMBER HIM WELL GROWING UP. WENT TO A, WHAT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN A BIG FIGHT AT THE MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM IN NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE SOMETIME IN THE EARLY ,MID 99S. CANT EVEN REMEMBER WHO HE WAS FIGHTING. BUT ME AND MY LONGTIME NOW DECEASED FRIEND, TIM FERRELL WENT. AND THE FIGHT GOT CANCELLED. BUT AS WE WALKED AROUND THE AUDITORIUM THAT NIGHT. BIG TEX COBB HAPPENED TO BE STANDING AROUND SMOKING A CIGARETTE. AND WE STOPPED AND CHATTED WITH HIM. AND I GOT AN AUTOGRAPH BY HIM ON MY BRAND NEW CONVERSE TENNISHOES THAT NIGHT. AS DOWN TO EARTH AND FRIENDLY GUY AS ANYNODY COULD EVER MEET.
You're saying the punches that circled around the back of Shavers's head when he ducked are what should have disqualified Cobb? Punches TO the back of the are different than what happened in this fight.
Shavers v Cobb was Ernie's 71st fight. He had already been knocked out 6 times. He was definitely at the end of his career. At his peak, he was definitely top 10. Actually, he never had any legs, and he never learned to jab or tie up on the inside. Imagine if he had been properly trained. He really could have had it all.

but tex cobb stayed there an traded punches with a devastating puncher shows how tough he was ate hard shots
@@butcher654 💯 %!!
@@butcher654Agreed! Randall "Tex" Cobb was as tough as they come, and was a great, true representation of his zodiac sign, Taurus.

@@garrethollingsworth4878did you watch the fight? 😂
Hard to believe it’s the same Shavers that almost beat Larry Holmes.
He almost beat Ali
Sell out

Cobb took this fight on just two week notice I believe. Impressive.

You need to change the title of the video to "Wow, what a Referree Stops Contest".
Shavers was lethal the first 5 rounds if you survived that you had a good chance of winning a decision.
Cobb was a very dangerous tough fighter Shavers was always dangerous, Good fight

George Chuvalo had the best chin. He fought all of the great fighters of the 70s, and was never knocked down.
Tex Cobb could get hit with a sledgehammer and still be standing lol one tough dude
Respect to Stevie Wonder for editing this video!

Excellent upload thank you
I met Randall at my friend George Manney’s home in Philly. We were recording music for one of his Last Minute Jam albums. Super nice guy.

The savage beating that Cobb took from Larry Holmes without getting knocked out! Proved his elite chin.

Earnie Shavers had a record of punching himself in later rounds. Also like in his fight against Larry Holmes.

And the guy who molested a dead horse in Fletch.

COBB COULD TAKE A BETTER PUNCH THAN ANYONE I EVER SAW
You know this isn't the whole fight, right? This was a poorly strung together series of clips.
What Cobb lacked in speed - he made up for it with a punch that hurt & did some damage.
Massive heart - very tough.
Wow! What heat exhaustion!
Shavers always has stamina issues despite being a great fighter and puncher.
If he worked on his stamina, he could have been champion
Tex cobb was a kick boxer.
It was more like which guy was gonna pass out first kinda fight
The days when "cardio" may as well have been a 4-letter word
He was great as the motorcyclist assassin from hell in the movie Raising Arizona.
Shavers got tired😂
I didn't know Don Dunfey was still calling fights as late as 1980.
What a chin Tex had

There was NO knockout, therefore a well deserved down vote. I calls em like I sees em. 😂
Shavers breathing hard after 1 round.
Larry Holmes must have hit Tex Cobb with ten KO punches every round for 15 rounds. Didn’t KO him. Made Cosell retire from boxing announcing
As soon as the fight ended Cobb said "let's party."
I think in his prime Ernie would destroy him . I heard Cobb took such a beating one time it made Howard quit commentating very tough dude !
Shavers had no stamina, all he had was a big right hand

Geez both of them looked like they were throwing punches underwater...
This was like a fight on roofies or quaaludes. Maybe the punctuation? Wow. What? A knockout?
Shavers legs were gone in the dressing room, should've carted him out to the ring.to save the 1% he had left.

A total BS click bait title. Cobb barely managed to out last a very tired Shavers.

Shavers had a great punch but not a chin
How slow they both look!
Al Bundy dropped Cobb with one punch! 😄
Buy silver to protect what's coming.
All those punches behind the head, Cobb should have been disqualified. He only won because he fought an old past his prime Shavers.
