Hello Mark! A little tip: Try to keep your average power as close as possible to your normalised power. Dont do big spikes but spread the effort out as much as possible just to not get dropped. This is the most efficient way of cycling, so you can save for the big sprint!
Great advice using two complex metrics, instead of saying, “try to be smooth on the pedals and don’t surge”. Congratulations people, we did it, we made full circle. 😅
It was great fun Mark, you were so close I could almost draft off you. I was also at my limit. We must remember that this is a collection of the best amateur cyclists in the world, and not just your local club. You can hold your head high for giving it a go, not everyone does. Good luck in your next event as i look forward to your next video.
Just found your channel mate what an inspiration I have spent the last 4 years getting over a bad divorce I’ve at times got ok in shape but never consistently got my diet right and sometimes binging, but never got in the shape I should have I’m 48 and really determined to get in the best shape ever now cheers mate keep up the good work mate
Thanks Mark, B grade rider, and been watching you since your 20min parkrun video. Enjoy your content, so much so I woke up at 5:15am to join this ride. Not sure I like it enough to do it again though 😝. Thanks for the link of the ride from my perspective. 👍
I can't believe I've only just seen this video. I'm a Cat A and I follow you! I starting Zwift racing at 44 in December and worked from C to B to A...A+ is the next target!
You got my respect for how well you deal with your defeat on this challenge! and Rocky would say: “… But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!”
What do we like.....? Down to earth, self-deprecating, motivating, and mildly amusing. You should be very proud of the channel + doing a full time day job + having a life in the real world. I've increased my w/kg almost 100% in the last 6m - largely trying to be >AVG. Simple goal. Also started running... now can do 10km + without blinking just need more time! Easier at 71kgs though :-)
Awesome to hear you started running......so many people don't like it but once you are at 10k you are a full on runner...from there you can train to do what you like......next video is a sales pitch on running 😂
That start was NUTS. You did well at the start. Great challenge and you didn't come last so mission accomplished. I hope you enjoyed it!! Next time you get back into some zwift racing, just sneak into a flat A grade without announcing it and attracting all those sharks lol.
Hello Mark, this year I managed to get my weight down from 85.2kg to 72kg and was competing at the Manchester Velodrome (just for the record, I am vertically challenged at 166cm). I so under performed due to the lack of practice on the pine boards I just got shelled out immediately in a points race. So my point is it is not always power to weight that matters (well not always). Like you I was a C catagory rider until I came 3rd in Tour de Zwift stage3, in stage four I was promoted to CatB, and I struggled, never mind. Great videos and keep up the good work.
I think I need a Mark Lewis Marathon weekend to go back and watch all your videos from day 1 - since I only discovered you in December when I was brand new to Zwift. Love your videos!
Don't think I've ever commented on a you tube video ever before. Just wanted to say,Well done, thoroughly entertaining channel. I'm an "Above average" cyclist, not really interested in running or weights etc...but this channel is the most eagerly anticipated for me in my list of subscriptions. You seem natural in front of the camera, not cheesy and genuinely funny. Credit where credit's due. Keep them coming!
Thanks Martin -my next video is on running so see what you think after that. 😂 I take it as a personal challenge to try and get people to watch me doing things they are not interested in doing themselves 😂👍🏼
These RUclips videos are on par with big RUclipsrs regarding editing, camera quality, screen recording etc. I thoroughly enjoy these videos Mark! When I first watched one of your videos I was shocked you only had 10k subscribers since the videos look like their coming from a 100k RUclipsr. Nonetheless I know this channel is gonna grow really fast, keep it up :)
I watched the "older" videos and despite all the comments already, I must say it is an absolutely different experience with the image quality. Absolutely worth the upgrade!
Great video………..at least you didn’t accidentally leave the race with 500m to go like me! Join me in the Cat B next time, much more fun than getting crushed by the cat A guys!
Mark. I am a B sometimes A when I can train more. I watch your videos because I love to see the joy you have in everything athletic you do. Great stuff. PS. I gave the shout out to Nixon (Cwolv)
I'm new to zwift. Been racing since the mid 80s. Into 2000. Not tons of racing but more for personal challenges. I remember being cat 4 but doing cat 3/4 races. Doing well with the cat 3. Did a 123 race....yup...dropped right away. Those cat 1 guys are beasts
Hi Mark, I do enjoy watching your channel as you and the family are very entertaining. As an A grade racer on Zwift it is always amusing to see others suffer adjusting to the platform. Personally I think you need to learn how to power climb, on the short steep stuff like the legsnapper I find it hurts almost as much at 6w/kg as 9w/kg. It is also pleasing to see you engage with the Zwift community. Keep up the good work!
Great effort Mark, of course last week there 7 A riders. This week 45! I did the D race but they staggered the start times so I couldn’t wish you well. Race 1 failed to beat any C’s. Race 2 beat 1 B but no C’s. That’s Zwift lol.
B category rider here...though not a very high B. Your videos have encouraged me to take on running, I did my first 8k trail race last weekend...19th out of 64, so I met my above average goal :)
Awesome - the more people I get running the better. Trail running is about as back to nature as you can get. I love it. And 19th is perfect....you beat more people than beat you.....when half the world gets eaten by zombies, you live!
Great racing with you and everybody else Mark! I thought you was going to stay with the front group with your sprint off the line! Maybe pick a flatter race next time to give us bigger guys a chance 😂
Above average Cat C here. I wouldn't want to see you in the group at the end of a race. I'm at 70 kg and my sprint is 10w/kg on a good day. Great job hanging in there with the A's.
Top effort Mark! Sorry I wasn't there, I was busy being dropped by some fast guys in the real world training ride 😂 If you do more of those zwift rides (preferably when it's not boiling hot outside), it will be a real pleasure to join you (I'm a pretty rubbish cat C at the moment).
Cat A (75kg, and generally lowly place getter) here Mark. Been a subscriber of yours for a while. As always a great video, I always get a laugh watching your vids. I'd have gotten out of bed at 0500 to join the race at 0600 (I'm an Aussie) if I didn't have to leave for work at the same time this week.
You can't hang with the Aussies boi!! That's all it was. In all seriousness love the channel. You have a lot of similarities to myself (although you're killing it way more than me). Keep up the inspirational content!
Great content as always old sport!. B Cat follower here! Joined in last night because of your vid, hoping for a sprint finish with you and was waiting up (D O'Rourke) now I've seen your vid I can see why you didn't get back up - must of burnt all your matches in first 30secs - massive power!! Tough out there on your billy Todd!! Keep up the good work. 👍
I could see people waiting to sprint and just had ZERO left 😂 So annoying that I didnt get to race to the line with someone! B cat next time I race that event.....may do better!
@@MarkLewisfitness Yeh I'm not surprised looking at the watts you had to put out!!! Definitely think you could of survived longer for a sprint with a bit more strategy. B cat should be interesting for sure 👍
I had never heard of Zwift until I started watching your channel and runners world channel. The running Zwift not so interesting, but this biking one... Looks like fun!
Super fun. Throw more challenges out there! I was frustrated my computer froze when I took a screenshot and dropped me from 2nd to 50 something. Had to chase back to you. Tried to ease up to let you on but didn’t quite work out. Needed redemption and got it! Did race 2 in the cat B and got 3rd!
I'm Cat A and enjoy watching you learn the sport. Comedy and entertainment! If you decide to "chum the waters" again, set the time so Asia and Australia can join you.
To the Lewis Family: Dad, Hubby, doggie - whatever - Mark is a beast. I'm a B+ rider, having raced the length of New Zealand [3,000 kms unsupported, off pave on a bike] twice, several other similar 1,000km races as well. I also watch Chris Pritchard's channel ironically. Both Chris and Mark "get it" when it comes to cycling and fitness. Get after it and have fun. I know its tough to accept but your Dad is Bad! #NO 2-1-2! Sell that MURRRRCH! Coffee mug, Shhhmedium T-shirts
I will have to read them this post in stages - If I hit them with this all at once they will explode...or laugh....or both. Although I am getting my eldest an ABOVE AVERAGE Tshirt for his birthday with my channel pic on it 😂
B cat rider - here for the movie references. I am D cat when it comes to organisation though. A video on how you organise that garage would be good. I would even tell people you're a social media influencer and a must follow!
B.Bishop here great race, utterly brutal.... rocky 4 sound track helped me to put in one of my best sustained efforts yet but still got dropped. (Usually a cat b rider)
Damn, I was going to make a joke that the camera quality was above average even if you weren't. Other people have beaten me to it! Nice work, enjoy Brecon Beacons!
LOL, that some beating you took there, respect for the currage :) Just a suggestion, if you get dropped, it's a better idea to try to recover (slow down) and wait for a chase group or two later you could tag along with. You overreached and burned your candle in all three ends. No way you could have won, but perhaps a better result ;) PS. pro tip from an old slow fart, lol.
reminds me when i was in the army and decided that it would be a good idea to run with a group. i was strong b group at the time and was told by a few people it was a bad idea and i shouldn't do it. well anyone that knows me should know that means i have to do it... or maybe that's why that said it. i stayed with them and when the run was over i was regretting my decision so much and was definitely the slowest runner. moving up to a new class shows there are people better than you.
Hahaha… Great effort. I was at home and had no idea you was in this race. I jumped on the broken wattbike atom for a laugh knowing It would cut out at any point. And yes it did, gutted. Could of placed well! (Normal setup at the office) At least you finished and congratulations not last! The best way to get faster is to keep racing with these guys! Well done 💪🏽🥇 I’ve only been riding since May last year and finished 7th in the playoffs with Canyon Coalition! Wasn’t really me, my team mates did all the work. But hey, every point counts! The thing is, racing with these guys only makes you stronger! That was me flying past you in the concept bike 😂😂😂 Lee Reid - Canyon Coalition- Jamaica 🇯🇲 Based in London England Great content, add me and let me know when you race again! Great power numbers shame you’re 80+ Kg
You could totally stay with the A's with the watts you put out. You just need to pick a race that you are not disadvantaged with your weight. A few hinters. Never lead - at the start you only need to push 5 to 6 watt/kg for a minutes or two on most courses. Choose a flat course, ideally something with short laps that you can learn the course and where you need to push and where you need to put out enough watts just hang on. You might also find longer races a better fit. Again, stick to flat races. A small hill is fine, but anything beyond that you will be left behind.
I would note one additional thing; those A cat riders with a Black Letter (instead of Red) on ZwiftPower? Yeah, they are actually Cat A+. Zwift doesn't acknowledge and have races for that category, however.
Apparently i'm A categorie however thats more endurance, the 8w/kg or more you push out at the start would have thrown me back. On the other hand doing 4,3w/kg for 30 minutes will put you last in some of these races as well, defenitely not worth killing yourself for that. Love what you do and have fun!
Great effort Mark! I would have liked to have joined you but had a ramp test to do! 🤮 My view is you went to hard at the start which won’t have helped you in the long run. The larger group that caught you after the first few corners would have put out less W/kg than you up to that point. Also, I am an A cat rider and have watched quite a few of your videos.
@@MarkLewisfitness You successfully avoided last though so well done! Next challenge should be top half of a B cat sprint race. And at just under 80kg I am not tiny and forced to shop in the children’s clothing section! However, I am the lower end of the A cat spectrum so maybe that’s where I am going wrong! 😆
Just discovered the channel and enjoying the content. FWIW I think zwift overestimates the importance of w/kg and excessively penalises height/ weight in their algorithm. In the real world a big, experienced rider on a flatish course is likely to mitigate their size through tucking, drafting, use of momentum on the rollers. Look how aero wiggins got at 6'3, with his track background, flat back and long levers.. and he'd probably be beaten by many 'cat A's' according to zwift 😆ditto Chris Hoy no doubt at the other end of the weight scale..at the end of the day it's a game; using power ups on a tron bike up a volcano etc 🤣and not real life.
Nice the way your family keep you humble! I'm a recent enough A cat rider despite being heavier than almost every other A so I feel your pain... I'm more of a mountain runner and would appreciate if more of your videos were focused on your trail running but keep up the excellent content your on the right path 👍
I WISH everyone was like you! Trouble is a running video gets a fraction of the views! But.....this Saturday I'm doing 20 miles in the Welsh mountains so you're in luck!
Hey @Mark Lewis and the rest of the chat, Its been a year ago you posted this video. But I got a question where do you get all this data of zwift? I just started Zwift a couple weeks ago and havent found all the data's yet.
I did the B cat race last night, warmed up very well and got dropped within 30 seconds of the start🤣 It was a lonely ride after that. At least I didn’t do the D category the (non zwift power) winner managed to do 5.4watts per kg !!!
I did the D cat for my first ever race @@MarkLewisfitness inspired me to have a go, managed second which i was really happy about. The winner took off like a rocket and disappeared into the distance right from the get go
@@MarkLewisfitness I'm hearing you, New York in general is brutal but that course is never flat. Central Park is constantly up and down and you need to keep kicking to stick with those guys but after a while all those kicks wear you out. Good job though
Thanks to everyone saying the video quality is better 🎥👍🏼 and all the A and B riders saying they follow the channel despite being WAY above average 👏😎

😂 Quality video, enjoyed that especially this bit at 10:44 😂😂😂 great family encouragement 🤣
I let them off as they allow me to spend all day editing 😂
I’m a Cat B on ZP, just! I’m 88kg and I don’t like the numbers I have to put out, so dread to think what it’s like at 100kg! Great effort though!
Thank you. Now I wanna race again 🤣
😀you made me laugh - that alone is worth gold
Ahhh this is me racing in the B cat:P Great effort
When I saw the Jamaican flag pass you, I was totally distracted. 🇯🇲 :)
Great video!! Humbling and still funny!!
Hahaha… Great effort. I was at home and had no idea you was in this race. I jumped on the broken wattbike atom for a laugh knowing It would cut out at any point. And yes it did, gutted. Could of placed well! (Normal setup at the office)
At least you finished and congratulations not last!
The best way to get faster is to keep racing with these guys! Well done 💪🏽🥇
I’ve only been riding since May last year and finished 7th in the playoffs with Canyon Coalition! Wasn’t really me, my team mates did all the work. But hey, every point counts!
The thing is, racing with these guys only makes you stronger!
That was me flying past you in the concept bike 😂😂😂
Lee Reid - Canyon Coalition- Jamaica 🇯🇲
Based in London England
Great content, add me and let me know when you race again! Great power numbers shame you’re 80+ Kg
Thanks! You are right - race with people better can only make you better (but it is nice to win sometimes back in C) 😂
@@MarkLewisfitness 100% Haven’t won an A Race yet! 😢 - Soon! But a highly ranked race, need to get my rankings back to sub 180
Brilliant fun!
Great content as always!
Damn those watts from some guys are Dawn good
9:35 terrible feeling, been there too many times
Apparently i'm A categorie however thats more endurance, the 8w/kg or more you push out at the start would have thrown me back. On the other hand doing 4,3w/kg for 30 minutes will put you last in some of these races as well, defenitely not worth killing yourself for that. Love what you do and have fun!
I'm a B cat mate, love the videos keep them up
Great effort Mark! I would have liked to have joined you but had a ramp test to do! 🤮
My view is you went to hard at the start which won’t have helped you in the long run. The larger group that caught you after the first few corners would have put out less W/kg than you up to that point.
Also, I am an A cat rider and have watched quite a few of your videos.
Thanks for watching! You are spot on about the start! Got carried away when they all whizzed off 😂😂
@@MarkLewisfitness You successfully avoided last though so well done! Next challenge should be top half of a B cat sprint race.
And at just under 80kg I am not tiny and forced to shop in the children’s clothing section! However, I am the lower end of the A cat spectrum so maybe that’s where I am going wrong! 😆
@@warwickzwifts That's your problem.....you are getting beat by guys that shop in the Adsa back to school section 😂
Great vid. Maybe you could try Cat B next time instead?
Next time! Going to have a week off then B cat!
Well, you are probably the top owner of three dogs in the race. Top grandpa? Top grandpa with three dogs married to Jenna? Work with me here.
I'm taking all of those 👍😁
Just started following you. Category D at the moment. Hopefully one day I can make it to a C or B
Hey @Mark Lewis and the rest of the chat, Its been a year ago you posted this video. But I got a question where do you get all this data of zwift? I just started Zwift a couple weeks ago and havent found all the data's yet.
I'm a B rider. You're a good laugh man.
What saddle do you run on your Zwift bike?
I did the B cat race last night, warmed up very well and got dropped within 30 seconds of the start🤣 It was a lonely ride after that. At least I didn’t do the D category the (non zwift power) winner managed to do 5.4watts per kg !!!
D cat is the wild west 🤪
I did the D cat for my first ever race @@MarkLewisfitness inspired me to have a go, managed second which i was really happy about. The winner took off like a rocket and disappeared into the distance right from the get go
Good luck on the mountain run. Will you do a vid on it please mate?
I will - can't wait.....it's a work of passion as no one watches the running videos ..... I need to do a Zwift race up the top or something 😁
Def no Mr Average.....but carry on :)
There are no hills in Central Park are there?
I’ve run around it plenty and it’s not quite as flat as it looks 😂
@@MarkLewisfitness I'm hearing you, New York in general is brutal but that course is never flat. Central Park is constantly up and down and you need to keep kicking to stick with those guys but after a while all those kicks wear you out. Good job though
