    Thanks for this, Mark. This past Sunday, I passed out from dehydration at KM 34 of the Berlin Marathon. Tried to get up, legs ignored me.
    Trained properly but executed horribly. Made almost every mistake possible on race day.
    Working through it. Massively humbling.
    This vid helps. You're a good man. Thanks.

    Interesting how your asthma is worse in summer and better in winter. Mine's the opposite - when the damp, cold weather rolls in, the commute to work gets harder (or did in the olden days before Covid when I commuted to work).
    Congratulations and best wishes to you both for Saturday!

    I enjoyed this so much, that I sent it to my brother in Kent, an avid amateur cyclist. Then I watched it again. Not from some sadist viewpoint, but simply because I found it informative.
    As an older athlete, 65 next week,and one who likes to push it sometimes. Being father to a soon to be 9 year old, I’d like to be around into my eighties, thus my healthy lifestyle, even more healthy than Pre blood cancer treatment. I actually ordered some electrolytes in view of the hot weather, and the fact that I love training in it.
    Keep up the good work Mark. You rock👍🏽

    I can feel your pain. My first half marathon a couple weeks ago I blacked out and collapsed barely 100 meters from the finish line. I pushed myself that little bit too hard because I was so close to my goal, I ran out of water and there were no water stations in the last 4 kilometers. Woke up 15 minutes after the cut off time.

  • @Xarx42
    @Xarx42 2 года назад

    Ah don't worry, I feel you! Cycled a year ago back from work. Suddenly woke up again in the ambulance car. Apparently I had an accident and landed straight onto my face, similar to you, just a little harder. Got a few stitches and have now a gab in my beard. So don't worry, could have been worse ;). Would be also interesting what happened in my case: I have a blackout of around half an hour. ^^

    Hi Mark,
    Sometime I get asked “why I run” and jokingly I answer “because I feel when I stop…” but I don’t believe that applied to you😂.
    I also have a similar issue to you re Asthma but I know full well that it is different for different people e.g. unlike to it bother me more in winter particularly at night.
    Your “episode” during the run maybe due to dehydration which in turn causes a drop in blood pressure.
    I experienced a similar episode some years ago …. though my dehydration was caused by too much drinking … a work XMAS party that started 4pm in the afternoon to 2am the following morning … I got home OK and was coherent but then fell through the “fibro” wall in the toilet…..
    …. My wife thought I had a heart attack and demanded I go to see the Doctor, which I did and he said that it was alcohol induced dehydration which in turn causes a lowering in blood pressure …. I have learned my lesson and have not done it since … and oh, I have scar in my forehead to remind me not to!😂

    Very important constructive comments for you! As a former professional, cyclist and research methodologist, please consider the following ideas. There’s two ways to cope with extreme exercise. One is called integrative the other is dissociative. I think you’re using the second kind at first it seems very effective you ignore Pain and you push the problem with this is that you can’t regulate yourself perfectly for moment to moment the other way is more painful, but if you learn to notice it carefully and work with yourself. This will never happen to you again do some reading on this it’s going to increase your performance not decrease it, you’re a really terrific person. Good luck with everything.

    Hi Mark, Love the video's, very inspiring (this one not so much :')) I had a 245 KM bike ride last sunday. It was really exhausting, took me way to long, the garmin was pointing me in every direction except for the right one, hot as hell, couple of times out of water, not enough food, got lost..... but it was worth every meter. Felt like a huge accomplishment. Congratulations for this weekend and get well soon, Lars

    I am glad you are ok, just gonna comment and put like on this, cant watch it. There were cases like yours that ended up badly... I especially remember case of young man/father that went running during hot summer day, long run... They found him after hours of searching lying face down on a running path, dead. Its one of more serious cases but it is not uncommon ending up in the hospital in ICU. Dehydration plus heatstroke is really dangerous. This summer I went on a short run (like 5k or something) and I weighed myself before and after, there was more than 1 kg of a difference! I usually sweat like a pig but it was something else. So for everybody - on a hot day go for a run in the morning or later in the evening. If it is really hot day maybe skip a run, it is not worth it in the end. Stay safe, have fun!

    • @XX-is7ps
      @XX-is7ps 2 года назад

      Great post. Just to add to this that hydration for a long run or similar starts 24-48hours out, not simply drinking on the day itself. Glad to see that Mark is ok and no serious consequences from his little incident!

    So I have asthma as well, and I have an (red) which is for everyday use morning and afternoon before bed, and the (blue) which is for exercise. I use this before I run or bike, and I always take it with me, because as you say it can vary in the seasons on how bad it is. Therefore my question is, don't you take you exercise asthma medicine with you on the run, and why not when there can be situations like these? From a fan from Denmark

      I take this video more as a warning/showing how NOT to do it rather than motivation - pushing hard in training is important but actually collapsing/passing out is not a good thing in any way shape or form.
      Training consistently and smartly involves alternating periods of acute fatigue and recovery, not grinding yourself into the ground to the point where you pass out.

    Even though dehydration and lack of energy is the probable cause of your fainting during running there could also be a heart-based problem (arrhythmia) causing it. I mean, it's not normal to pass out during running even when under great training load. All I'm saying is that you should probably go check your heart with a cardiologist and rule out any dangerous causes. Just in case... :)

      I'm 99.999999% sure it's diet. On days where I don't eat enough I get a little head rush if I get up too quick...it was just that and then some! )and yes, I know a head rush on standing up is probably a good time to eat some food!!!!)

      It’s one of those things we almost all neglect or feel too embarsssed to do. Almost every exercise programme contains a warning to “check with your doctor before undertaking strenuous exercise” but none of us ever actually do. Coincidentally I was just watching a RUclips video yesterday on a top level triathlete which had a heart attack during a triathlon. I’m not suggesting that Mark in particular needs to be concerned (I think his calorie deficit or dehydration was the likely reason for his collapse) but your point is definitely a good one in a wider context for all of us

    Brilliant post as always. Enjoyable and concerning to watch in equal measure I guess. I’ve mentioned before I’m same height weight power etc (at least I was before you went marriage weight control) but I’m a bit older……..and for what it’s worth on the zwift training I’ve been doing recently (ftp 320) I’ve really been struggling to breath….no asthma or anything, just struggling to breath in the quantity of air my brain said I needed……and that’s without the calorie deficit your under. So, hopefully just the air quality / pollen or whatever caused that. An amazing physical performance by you nevertheless. Well done. Chill out a bit now and make her day special. Re read that last sentence. Cheers. Mart.

      I know he’s been in a hard deficit working so hard to get in perfect shape for his wedding but I couldn’t agree more, you can only push so hard before your body simple can’t take additional stress. Rest up, Mark

    I hope you're okay. Good god! You have amazing mental strength to push through until the body fails! I guess it's another story for the speech. RE: the difficulty breathing, can I address the elephant in the room and ask if you've had a covid test? I had it earlier in the year and wheezing was one of my symptoms.
