Just to let everyone know that TIDE has a smear campaign to stop us all from teaching/making our own detergents, by posing as reg ppl and saying that the homemade detergents ruined their expensive clothes and streaked it like bleach! This is un-true and it is a SMEAR CAMPAIGN; paid through commissions to ppl, from P& G co...who has said in the newspaper they are losing money in sales each month over this homemade detergent phenomena! P&G has used smear campaigning for decades! They did it to Amway, who won their law suit against P&G a few years ago...and they did it to Crest Brand, and lost a lawsuit, they tried to smear many other companies as well. They only want your paycheck. they do not care about us or our safety of water and health. KEEP shoving that money back in your OWN WALLET guys and dolls! Make it yourself, use less chemicals in our wash and water waste system in our drinking water system too... TIDE panicking is a sign we are winning the war on cancer causing chemicals in our households! Do not pander to these companies...keep on truckin' and share this statement across the board! Whoot! Whoot!

It's disgusting the way we are controlled and deprived of our own God given rights.. Pay lots of money for foods and fruits and veggies if it's organic, we are forced to pay a high price.. And they have already stopped household blocks of soaps being sold in the UK I walked to 10 Shops yesterday and I still couldn't find household soap or even borax or borax substitute , and now I've even noticed they have stopped the soda crystals being in stock in the detergent sections.. I found soda crystals in Sainsburys Only!! Years ago it was everywhere . I'm so sick of all the restriction the government and these big corporations put on our life's . No freedom to have what you want , just forcing us to buy their Products and leaving you no choice.. I hate this sick world and pity our kids growing up init , all our home made solutions being taken away Never to be passed on if these big corporations got anything to do with it..
Zote is from mexico we use it in bar form to wash dishes and clothes nothing else needed. The pink bar has citronella in it so it will also keep bugs at bay.
You can also wash dishes keeping the Zote (or other bar soap) in bar form. Just rub a wet sponge or dishcloth on it, then use the soapy dish cloth to wash your dishes. If you need to soak dishes in soapy water, first let the bar of soap sit in the water for ten minutes or so, then take it out and put the dishes in. Same with using a bar soap for laundry: rub it on the clothes, especially any spots or stains, then wash as normal, either by hand or in the machine. You really don't need to put in the work of making an imitation of more modern cleaning products. Just use bar soap as bar soap.
I am new to Zote soap and I think I like this idea even better. I will put effort into making dry laundry soap but for dishes, counters and such it's easier soaping up dish cloth.
I use bar soap to wash dishes (Kirk’s Castile) And it works wonderfully! The only problem I have is that I do go through a bar pretty quick. I think turning it into a liquid would make it last longer, especially when I can make one entire gallon from a single bar of soap.
I just made a year's supply of powder laundry detergent using Zote. I used my Ninja blender to grind the soap and "washed" the pitcher in the sink with hot water, added some dirty dishes and it cleaned my dishes perfectly. I will definitely make your recipe for dish soap!
Hi Janie, just made this washing up liquid (as known in the UK), as my Ecover was getting low. I got flummoxed at the 1/8 of a cup measure, so just added two level tablespoons!! I didn't add the fragrances, just pure lemon juice and 25ml of the remaining Ecover. It's all mixed and looks good, had a quick washing up test and Whoo Hoo, no slimy or greasy feel to anything. What on earth would I do without your YT posts. Thanks girl.
you can also do what our grandmothers did and get a sponge and make suds. I have been making this for years and I never add anything but essential oils, soda , water or milk ( milk for hand soap ) . You just have to LATHER yourself. Back in the day my gran only had home made soap in a bar like soap . No sodium laureth sulfate ( lather ingredient) . She used her hands to generate suds. I do the same and this soap can be used on your body, on your dishes & laundry , counters , floors and your entire body. The reason I make this soap is because my adult daughter and husband are allergic to store bought soap and they can use this safely . They have never ever had a problem unless I used store bought ready made soap. If you have time , this is well worth your effort and it is a better soap than even the name brand soaps like palmolive and gain.
ive made this soap I added tea tree oil for antibacterial purposes and also lemon grass essential oil for antibacterial .i didnt want the strong soap of ajax etc an all others soap bought. its safer to use with raw hands who have exceed etc on skin.

I started with the same size bottle as you, a 30 ounce Ajax, I used 1 3/4 pints of water (28 ounces ), 1/4 cup of baking soda, 2 tablespoons of washing soda, 2 teaspoons of lemon juice, and 1 1/2 teaspoons of castor oil. This recipe fills the bottle perfectly. This is just a basic recipe to eval the amounts and performance. I'll keep you posted .TY.
SuperSaltydog77 It doesn't take but a wee sliver for a large bottle. Remember, one 400 gram bar makes 10 gallons of laundry detergent! But, just take a gallon milk jug, add hot water and pour your solution into that, shake well and pour some back into your soap bottle, reserving the rest for 'refills'. It's still good. Just needs watered down! LOL.. It'll make your pots shine, for sure!

I've just made this recipe again. It does not suds up unless you add some regular dish soap with it. But it does a good job of cleaning the dishes. For pennies compared to regular store bought name brand soaps.
I did some searches for liquid soaps which were a lot of work, until I found yours, which reminds me of my girlfriend and the grandma's who would save the left over bars of soap in a jar :) I figured there must be a dish soap version of the liquid laundry soap recipe.

My own version of hm dishsoap is as follows, 2 cups of water, 1/2 cup of my granulated laundry detergent, 2 TBSP of vinegar, and one cup of my liquid castile soap. It works pretty well. Zote is already soap which is what we are wanting. Lemon juice is fragrant and I understand putting it in. But the washing soda and baking soda confuse me. What is the purpose of those ingredients?
I love how you use regular flavoring to add scent. For the exotic scents, it might be worth checking out the prices at a cake shop. We have found the prices to be better than most local grocery stores, and the quality is much better. They would have a wide variety of options. Their food coloring is incredible.
I would like to see a list of ingredients. Have made your laundry soap-dry version. It has made a huge difference!!! Thank you for that!! I believe there is not much savings in this dishwashing soap, if you add the cost of all the ingredients. But it would be fun to explore.

Great idea Janie..I love the Zote soap !! You actually taught me how to make my clothing detergent with it and I love the way my clothes come out. The smell is amazing!! I know you like added a bit more fragrance to your clothing detergent but I think Zote has a wonderful fragrance on its own. Janie, I know the subject is about dish soap. However, I need help and I trust you may have the answer. Other versions of fabric softener includes baking soda and salt to water and vinegar (not conditioners). I love your version. However, We have hard water here. 😢 What do you recommend?. You can use salt and baking soda to scrub and soften foods and vinegar to remove grease. I've used 1/2 a lemon dipped into salt in a pinch, works on soap scum in the bath too.

I have a dropper of bleach for laundry spot cleaning and for my hand washed dishes I add a few drops in the water. I never thought of putting droppers full into my ajax. I just swish around a pure bar of ivory soap just a little bit for dishes I love it it works better and is pure natural soap, it not very sudsy about 50 cents a bar that lasts forever can beat it no fuss. I use a little of the regular dish soup for greasy pans however! Lemon ajax is consumer reports top rated dish soap for cheapness and effectiveness maybe I 'll try this instead of ajax or ad to ajax. it sound like it cost less than a quarter! Sheila
Just come across your post. Thank You very much for posting. The idea of making my own dish soap(as well as laundry soap) is very appealing to me. More and more I would like to eliminate my use of plastic. I have a question though. The washing soda is that like the Arm and Hammer washing soda? Or what exactly is washing soda? I am assuming it is not the same as baking soda?
You don't have to add in the store bought detergent: most ppl on her just can't wash dishes without the suds...for those who want to make this and still want the higher sudsy wash...you'll have to add bonners liquid or castile soap...or the dawn or like type to keep the suds in the sink. This cleans perfectly without the sudsing. My pots shine!!!
Thank you for all these Zote videos. I've only used it in a powdered laundry soap recipe before. Seeing you melt it with water reminded me of Quick n Brite...of which I have a half-used tub covered in about 8 years of dust. You've inspired me to get it out, melt it and use it up then buy a whole lot of Zote. I don't suppose you have worked out how to use Zote in a dishwasher, have you? That would be great since I hate how our dishwasher doesn't clean well now that the government has taken the phosphate out of our soaps.
Im about sure they use citronella for the essential oil that's in the bar. I made my own bar soap with olive oil and coconut oil with pink coloring with citronella and juniper is what i added and smells very similar to zote. which i was trying to do a comparison with mine and it came really really close. NIce video.
YOU have no idea how This has changed my life. REALLY! My mom was obsessed w/her laundry, I have made. your laundry powder and share it with all my friends. I will never use anything else. My niece has skin allergies so the white bar of Zote works better the small amount of fragrance is ok, I also don't use the awesome oxy. Now this and your right, it smells like dessert. 💃
I wouldn't mind trying some of this but I LOVE my Dawn dish soap. It has to be the original blue Dawn dish soap. No "concentrated", no anti bacterial garbage, no purple or green Dawn (that's just wrong!) :)

Chef Janie -- I made the dishwashing detergent-- I quadrupled the recipe -- I did NOT add the lemon juice -- my solution is very thick -- and creamy etc ., I am pleased with all -- will diluting the outcome of my dishwashing detergent a good thing -- Compromise the quality-- I am guessing -- NO -- what is your thought on this? I tweaked Janie's recipe a bit. Here is how i do it. In a half gallon of warm water melt the whole Zote then do the "Trick". The "Trick" is to use a electric hand mixer to get the melted Zote to be creamy form not "foamy" so it wont clog the bottle when dispensing. Then add 1/3 cup lemon juice, 1/3 cup white vinegar, 1/2cup washing soda*, 1/2cup baking soda as you are whipping it. then let cool down. Then add the cream to a 1 gal jug and fill the jug with water. Viola!! a gallon of dish washing soap which fills 9 empty 14 oz bottles. ( Zote $.99....lemon juice $1.00 bottle.... baking soda $.50... *washing soda (if made from baking soda )$.50... white vinegar $1.00 bottle.) ((to make washing soda in a pinch baking a 1/2 cup of baking soda in the oven @ 400 degrees for an hour turns it into a usable washing soda in case you are out of washing soda.)), Hats off to Janie for showing us how to save money and clean our dishes.

Hi Janie - thanks for all the great info! I have a question on this particular soap. In the past I have made a similar dishsoap but it didn't do well on my plastic wear - it left an oily residue on my plastics and silverware but my dishes were squeaky clean. Does this have the same properties or maybe this is a normal good thing that I am interpreting as a bad thing. I am used to the residue and don't mind it because it helps bead up the water as it's drying, but maybe this recipe doesn't have this issue at all. Just wanted to ask before trying and hoping for different results. Thank you!

I made this today and it looks good in the bottle, but when I use it it is cloudy with particles, and a film on the top. Dishes come out looking dirty. Not sure what I did wrong.
@ thift shops, I found a metal contraption that holds soap in cage. You swish it around in water to get soap to wash dishes. I think you can order on line.

I made this soap so many times it’s soo good thank you. Today I wanted to make again cuz my stock is running low but I have no washing soda 😩. Do u think it will still come out good with out washing soda?
You can make your own washing soda by putting baking soda on a cookie sheet and on a low oven heat..very low...turns to soft powder form (change of chemical makeup) in a few hours...and you have washing soda. There are 'how to's' on youtube. just search how to make washing soda at home. I only make a few cups at a time...that's all you need.

patsy spring My dishes are not greasy, but the pots and pans do shine. You can squirt a bit of dawn dish soap in the mix to get suds and make it not greasy if you feel it's bothering you, but you may get a 'waxy' feeling on the pots and pans. But once you rinse it, you'll be amazed at the shine!
Hi! I made the dish soap and it works great! My plastic ware didn't get that greasy feel to it and my stainless steel did shine so I do like this recipe and I will be making it again. I was wandering if the zote can be substituted with fels naptha? since I had that on hand but I wanted to do the recipe the way you did it before I change anything. No, it does not have the brightener and citronella which is the citrus oils that shine the pots and pans and removes the grease. I had a woman write and say her dishes were very greasy and wondered what she did wrong; it was that fact she used the Fels Naptha. Or at least that is what we figured it was. The ingredients are not exactly the same. I love zote because of the citronella scent keeps the pest away in the summer. :)
I get contact dermatitis from regular dish soaps and bath soap(except Caress and homemade). Do you know if the Zote soap contains less chemicals than other bar soaps? Or do you think this could work with Caress?
Mine kept in bulk (about a gallon) for five months or longer with no problems. Just like laundry detergent there is not really anything that will go bad in this. I'd say a year or two?? I use it so not had any more than that five months. I keep it in the bar from in baskets in laundry room as it takes up less space this way. Storing in bulk already made I just don't have the room, esp after making 10 gallons of laundry soap and 3 gallons of fabric softener. LOL>> I hope this helps. Add some glycerin, about 1 tbsp per gallon or some castor oil for suds and this won't separate as bad. It will separate if you don't. It'll have to be stirred or shaken before each use if not. But it does clean really well. :P

Hi Janie...I have tried 3 times to make the liquid dish soap following your recipe as I watched the video. MY only problem is once I fill my bottles within even an hour, it is so thick that it won't squeeze out of the bottle :( I don't know what I'm doing wrong?? JoPuttPutt try using less zote soap; that is what is harding it up; cut the soap in half; it doesn't take much for a quart of liquid. But once you get it right, you'll know it. It should be as thick as store-bought.

Janie when you have to shred a large amount of it did you ever heat it in the microwave for like 10 seconds just to soften it a little. I never tried it. But I read some do this. I didn't think it would harm it too much since you are going to cook it any way. What do you think?
+Wendy Reinert I have never done that as I cherish my microwave too much to risk a fire! LOL! But let us know how it goes. It shreds best when hardened so I freeze mine before shredding in the hot summer months.

I'm sorry, I'm ADHD so I tried to read all of the Q&A but I just don't have the patience. I have made the laundry soap which I have fun making and actually LOVE the way my clothes clean. I wish I could get the fragrance stronger but I'll settle for the cleaning qualities. I wanted to try this but I'm wondering about the grease cutting properites. Does this cut through grease or do I have to use something else for that? I have sensitive skin BUT want clean dishes too. LOL. Like grandma used to say "no queres nada) Translation You don't want nothing!
Victoria Llamas Add some laundry crystals booster like Alive to your detergent next time you make it, or add a bit to each load. Smells nice! YES!! it works on grease! It might feel a bit 'waxy' when washing but that rinses off for the best shine! The commentors below love it who've tried it. Zote is the only bar that I've used that works for the grease cutting properties plus it has a brightener. I wash my dog in the zote as well and you can see how white and shimmery her fur is. I have sensitive skin too. No problems for me. I get migraines, no problem for me. Add some drops of 'Kirk's Castle Soap or dawn for a sudsing...but it doesn't need to suds...this cleans without the suds!
Ok. I will buy some crystals. I'm trying to pinch pennies now that eye on one coupon so those might have to wait BUT the laundry soap and dish soap will and does help with this situation

Zote soap is a simple, chemical free soap is made of beef tallow and coconut oil, salt (sodium chloride), glycerin, and a hint of oil of citronella. As a laundry detergent Zote is ideal as it is low-sudsing, and there are no phosphates.
does it cut grease? I am experimenting with different recipes. your soap has the consistency of the store bought, so far what I have made looks like one big glob of soft soap. Also I made homemade liquid dish soap with vinegar, water and shavings of Ivory bar soap. At first I thought ok I understand the idea that you don't need suds to clean the dishes however I wanted more grease cutting and a little suds. after this batch cooled and settled it was one big glob. So I reheated it adding lemon juice and one cup of my homemade detergent. It is thickening up like the first batch. my homemade powdered detergent that I made has Borax, OxiClean detergent, washing soda and baking soda. So I took one cup and added to my homemade liquid dish soap. So is it ok to have added my homemade powdered detergent and how can I get the same consistency as store bought liquid soap instead of having it like glob.
sowsplace Hello! Yes, it has citronella oil in it and it does cut the grease. So far, everyone who has actually made or tried it, loves how it gets their pots and pans so clean. Now, you don't have to add the bit of ajax to the soap for suds, I only do that because I have it in my head I need suds to wash dishes; castor oil will bubble up as well (found on ebay for cheaper). But to save even more money, forego the suds al together. I made a gallon of this at a time. Try using less soap and use more water in your mixture. It only takes a a Tbsp of zote shavings per reg sized bottle of dish liquid. When I make a gallon, I shake really well during cooling several times. You can also add a tsp. of vegetable glycerin to the mix if you are still having problems with hardening up. Less soap, more water, that should do the trick. Let us know how it goes. Separation is normal, just shake and squeeze! Enjoy!
What consistency should this soap be once it cools and settles in the bottle? Mine is thick and I may have used a SLIGHT too much Zote...what should I add to thin it out & how? I added 1/2 C. Dawn before it cooled so will adding it to a pot of water cause bubbles? Thanks!
The help with the emulsification wouldn't Dawn soap dish soap be very good at like a teaspoon to that to help emulsify the parts together I know it works very good on pest treatments outside with neem oil and things like that.
Hi Janie, I had a little trouble figuring out how much zote you used. I wish you showed the sliver before you cut it up. When yours cooled did it ever get all clumped back up. Mine got almost like the pieces I melted. I've made dish soap before, but I lost my recipe. I used to make a gallon. Did you ever add borax or vitamin E (to keep your hands soft)?

i would just boil or melt it down and put in a bottle so i wouldnt have to use the bar i would not add any other ingredents like the limon and backing soda i think it does the job just how it is and i use zote for bathing washing close makes my whites look good
I tried 3 times now making this as I watched your video while doing so. I did use the butter scent extract and 2 T of lemon juice. The problem I've had is that within 1/2 hr of filling my empty bottles it was SO THICK and even after shaking VIGOROUSLY it came out in clumps and couldn't be squirted out even. I don't have any idea what I am doing wrong?? Any thoughts or suggestions :) THANKS!!
you may have used too much washing or baking soda.1/8 a cup is 2tbsp and she used about 1/4 cup worth zote soap. your measurements may have been off. hope it helps too much washing soda will make it grossly thick as well as an uneven water to zote ratio.
JoPuttPutt you can place it in a blender with just a small amount of water and blend it a portion at a time. It would turn into a thicker style of liquid soap you can squirt🙂
The same thing happened to me today so I kept adding hot water to my container and finally got it all squeezed out of the bottle into a wash pan then used my immersion blender to break up the clumps adding water till I got it to the right consistency. Just finished washing my dishes and the soap worked just fine just didn't hold the suds.
I made a batch this afternoon. Every so often when I walked by the bottled batch I would shake the bottle. Seems to not separate anymore. In place of the lemon juice I used a big squirt of lemon extract and two packages of unsweetened lemonade. The soap came out looking creamy and lemony and smells fantastic! However, it did not suds up at all when I washed the dishes and, the dishes had a greasy feeling to them. Where did I go wrong?? P.S. My hands feel really soft and smooth!!
Laura M The homemade does not make much suds...but it is not the suds that clean. Try using the lemon juice next time; I know that is what keeps the grease along with the zote ...at bay. Also, squirt in some dawn for grease fighting ....about 2 tbsp per large bottle should do it. Bonners castor oil will get you some suds action if that is still important to you. Trust me, with the lemon juice and the zote...my pans shine!
Janie Pendleton Hi Chef Janie, I am enjoying my homemade soap very much. I think I may have put too much zote in causing the mixture to get super thick. I don't mind though. I just shake it up and it thins out a little. You are absolutely right about the shine it puts on the pots. It shines up everything, including the kitchen sink. :-) Will try the castor oil for a little suds. Thanks for the great video.
I would look up the ingredients in both and do a comparison...on google. I know that zote is safe for dishes. I've only ever used Fels-Naptha once. I love Zote best and that is my go-to soap. Let me know if you find out the answer. Blessings!
It's not as sudsy as I like it to be and it does separate and clog the hole so you can't squirt it. You have to unscrew the top to use it. However, it cleans really well, lasts a long time, and rinses off really well too. All the glasses and ceramic cookware look fantastic.
Add a bit of your store-bought brand to the mix it has glycerin to help keep from separating(adds suds too) or add some Dr Bonner's soap for some suds. I add vegetable glycerin for separating issues. I'm used to using it, so, it's just tricking the mind out of thinking that suds are cleaning dishes when in reality they are not the thing that cleans dishes. Hi Jennie my name Lynda , I have a problem, I tried to make homemade dish liquid. I vid Ol a woman making the dish liquid. She grated a bar of zote soap and a cup of borex. It came out really thick I know I made a mistake do u know how I can fix, because I don,t want to throw it away. Thank u
I love it! My pots shine! I use a bit of dawn in the solution as well now and that solved any problems that I had. Plus I wash in really hot water. It can leave a bit of a 'waxy' film at times...but when it dries off, it shines nicely. I hand wash everything. Now when I can, I use ajax with bleach alternative. I don't risk it with home canning and preserving food.
Just to let everyone know that TIDE has a smear campaign to stop us all from teaching/making our own detergents, by posing as reg ppl and saying that the homemade detergents ruined their expensive clothes and streaked it like bleach!
This is un-true and it is a SMEAR CAMPAIGN; paid through commissions to ppl, from P& G co...who has said in the newspaper they are losing money in sales each month over this homemade detergent phenomena!
P&G has used smear campaigning for decades! They did it to Amway, who won their law suit against P&G a few years ago...and they did it to Crest Brand, and lost a lawsuit, they tried to smear many other companies as well. They only want your paycheck. they do not care about us or our safety of water and health.
KEEP shoving that money back in your OWN WALLET guys and dolls!

Zote is from mexico we use it in bar form to wash dishes and clothes nothing else needed. The pink bar has citronella in it so it will also keep bugs at bay.
You can also wash dishes keeping the Zote (or other bar soap) in bar form. Just rub a wet sponge or dishcloth on it, then use the soapy dish cloth to wash your dishes. If you need to soak dishes in soapy water, first let the bar of soap sit in the water for ten minutes or so, then take it out and put the dishes in. Same with using a bar soap for laundry: rub it on the clothes, especially any spots or stains, then wash as normal, either by hand or in the machine. You really don't need to put in the work of making an imitation of more modern cleaning products. Just use bar soap as bar soap.

I am new to Zote soap and I think I like this idea even better. I will put effort into making dry laundry soap but for dishes, counters and such it's easier soaping up dish cloth.
I use bar soap to wash dishes (Kirk’s Castile) And it works wonderfully! The only problem I have is that I do go through a bar pretty quick. I think turning it into a liquid would make it last longer, especially when I can make one entire gallon from a single bar of soap.

I just made a year's supply of powder laundry detergent using Zote. I used my Ninja blender to grind the soap and "washed" the pitcher in the sink with hot water, added some dirty dishes and it cleaned my dishes perfectly. I will definitely make your recipe for dish soap!

Hi Janie, just made this washing up liquid (as known in the UK), as my Ecover was getting low. I got flummoxed at the 1/8 of a cup measure, so just added two level tablespoons!! I didn't add the fragrances, just pure lemon juice and 25ml of the remaining Ecover. It's all mixed and looks good, had a quick washing up test and Whoo Hoo, no slimy or greasy feel to anything. What on earth would I do without your YT posts. Thanks girl.

you can also do what our grandmothers did and get a sponge and make suds. I have been making this for years and I never add anything but essential oils, soda , water or milk ( milk for hand soap ) . You just have to LATHER yourself. Back in the day my gran only had home made soap in a bar like soap . No sodium laureth sulfate ( lather ingredient) . She used her hands to generate suds. I do the same and this soap can be used on your body, on your dishes & laundry , counters , floors and your entire body. The reason I make this soap is because my adult daughter and husband are allergic to store bought soap and they can use this safely . They have never ever had a problem unless I used store bought ready made soap. If you have time , this is well worth your effort and it is a better soap than even the name brand soaps like palmolive and gain.
ive made this soap I added tea tree oil for antibacterial purposes and also lemon grass essential oil for antibacterial .i didnt want the strong soap of ajax etc an all others soap bought. its safer to use with raw hands who have exceed etc on skin.

I started with the same size bottle as you, a 30 ounce Ajax, I used 1 3/4 pints of water (28 ounces ), 1/4 cup of baking soda, 2 tablespoons of washing soda, 2 teaspoons of lemon juice, and 1 1/2 teaspoons of castor oil. This recipe fills the bottle perfectly. This is just a basic recipe to eval the amounts and performance. I'll keep you posted .TY.
SuperSaltydog77 It doesn't take but a wee sliver for a large bottle. Remember, one 400 gram bar makes 10 gallons of laundry detergent! But, just take a gallon milk jug, add hot water and pour your solution into that, shake well and pour some back into your soap bottle, reserving the rest for 'refills'. It's still good. Just needs watered down! LOL.. It'll make your pots shine, for sure!

I've just made this recipe again. It does not suds up unless you add some regular dish soap with it. But it does a good job of cleaning the dishes. For pennies compared to regular store bought name brand soaps.

I did some searches for liquid soaps which were a lot of work, until I found yours, which reminds me of my girlfriend and the grandma's who would save the left over bars of soap in a jar :) I figured there must be a dish soap version of the liquid laundry soap recipe.
Hi, this too is an older post but I just wanted to add my 2 cents worth. My own version of hm dishsoap is as follows, 2 cups of water, 1/2 cup of my granulated laundry detergent, 2 TBSP of vinegar, and one cup of my liquid castile soap. It works pretty well. I've experimented for quite awhile and this works the best for me.

I love how you use regular flavoring to add scent. For the exotic scents, it might be worth checking out the prices at a cake shop. We have found the prices to be better than most local grocery stores, and the quality is much better. They would have a wide variety of options. Their food coloring is incredible.

Great idea Janie..I love the Zote soap !! You actually taught me how to make my clothing detergent with it and I love the way my clothes come out. The smell is amazing!! I know you like added a bit more fragrance to your clothing detergent but I think Zote has a wonderful fragrance on its own. I will have to try the dish detergent, I almost bet it smells amazing as well but we all know its the effectiveness that counts : ) As always, thanks for your great ideas and tips!
Janie, I know the subject is about dish soap. However, I need help and I trust you may have the answer. Other versions of fabric softener includes baking soda and salt to water and vinegar (not conditioners).

You can use salt and baking soda to scrub and soften foods and vinegar to remove grease. I've used 1/2 a lemon dipped into salt in a pinch, works on soap scum in the bath too.

I have a dropper of bleach for laundry spot cleaning and for my hand washed dishes I add a few drops in the water. I never thought of putting droppers full into my ajax. I just swish around a pure bar of ivory soap just a little bit for dishes I love it it works better and is pure natural soap, it not very sudsy about 50 cents a bar that lasts forever can beat it no fuss. I use a little of the regular dish soup for greasy pans however! Lemon ajax is consumer reports top rated dish soap for cheapness and effectiveness maybe I 'll try this instead of ajax or ad to ajax. it sound like it cost less than a quarter! Sheila

More and more I would like to eliminate my use of plastic. I have a question though. The washing soda is that like the Arm and Hammer washing soda? Or what exactly is washing soda? I am assuming it is not the same as baking soda?

You don't have to add in the store bought detergent: most ppl on her just can't wash dishes without the suds...for those who want to make this and still want the higher sudsy wash...you'll have to add bonners liquid or castile soap...or the dawn or like type to keep the suds in the sink. This cleans perfectly without the sudsing. My pots shine!!!
Thank you for all these Zote videos. I've only used it in a powdered laundry soap recipe before. Seeing you melt it with water reminded me of Quick n Brite...of which I have a half-used tub covered in about 8 years of dust. You've inspired me to get it out, melt it and use it up then buy a whole lot of Zote. I don't suppose you have worked out how to use Zote in a dishwasher, have you? That would be great since I hate how our dishwasher doesn't clean well now that the government has taken the phosphate out of our soaps.

Im about sure they use citronella for the essential oil that's in the bar. I made my own bar soap with olive oil and coconut oil with pink coloring with citronella and juniper is what i added and smells very similar to zote. which i was trying to do a comparison with mine and it came really really close. NIce video.

My niece has skin allergies so the white bar of Zote works better the small amount of fragrance is ok, I also don't use the awesome oxy. Now this and your right, it smells like dessert. 💃

I wouldn't mind trying some of this but I LOVE my Dawn dish soap. It has to be the original blue Dawn dish soap. No "concentrated", no anti bacterial garbage, no purple or green Dawn (that's just wrong!) :)

Chef Janie -- I made the dishwashing detergent-- I quadrupled the recipe -- I did NOT add the lemon juice -- my solution is very thick -- and creamy etc ., I am pleased with all -- will diluting the outcome of my dishwashing detergent a good thing -- Compromise the quality-- I am guessing -- NO -- what is your thought on this? Thank you -- I added a "rose honey" extract extract.,

I tweaked Janie's recipe a bit. Here is how i do it. In a half gallon of warm water melt the whole Zote
then do the "Trick". The "Trick" is to use a electric hand mixer to get
the melted Zote to be creamy form not "foamy" so it wont clog the bottle
when dispensing. Then add 1/3 cup lemon juice, 1/3 cup white vinegar,
1/2cup washing soda*, 1/2cup baking soda as you are whipping it. then
let cool down. Then add the cream to a 1 gal jug and fill the jug with water.
Viola!! a gallon of dish washing soap which fills 9 empty 14 oz
bottles. ( Zote $.99....lemon juice $1.00 bottle.... baking soda $.50...
*washing soda (if made from baking soda )$.50... white vinegar $1.00
bottle.) ((to make washing soda in a pinch baking a 1/2 cup of baking
soda in the oven @ 400 degrees for an hour turns it into a usable
washing soda in case you are out of washing soda.)), Hats off to Janie for showing us how to save money and clean our dishes.

+Victoria Llamas Mine always seperates also, so don't feel like you've done something wrong. I just shake the bottle up a bit, it all blends together and I use it.
Try a Tbsp or two of vegetable glycerin in the recipe. It helps keep it from separating.
Hi Janie - thanks for all the great info! I have a question on this particular soap. In the past I have made a similar dishsoap but it didn't do well on my plastic wear - it left an oily residue on my plastics and silverware but my dishes were squeaky clean. Does this have the same properties or maybe this is a normal good thing that I am interpreting as a bad thing. I am used to the residue and don't mind it because it helps bead up the water as it's drying, but maybe this recipe doesn't have this issue at all. Just wanted to ask before trying and hoping for different results. Thank you!

I made this today and it looks good in the bottle, but when I use it it is cloudy with particles, and a film on the top. Dishes come out looking dirty. Not sure what I did wrong.
@ thift shops, I found a metal contraption that holds soap in cage. You swish it around in water to get soap to wash dishes. I think you can order on line.

You can make your own washing soda by putting baking soda on a cookie sheet and on a low oven heat..very low...turns to soft powder form (change of chemical makeup) in a few hours...and you have washing soda. There are 'how to's' on youtube. just search how to make washing soda at home. I only make a few cups at a time...that's all you need.

patsy spring My dishes are not greasy, but the pots and pans do shine. You can squirt a bit of dawn dish soap in the mix to get suds and make it not greasy if you feel it's bothering you, but you may get a 'waxy' feeling on the pots and pans. But once you rinse it, you'll be amazed at the shine!
Hi! I made the dish soap and it works great! My plastic ware didn't get that greasy feel to it and my stainless steel did shine so I do like this recipe and I will be making it again. I was wandering if the zote can be substituted with fels naptha? since I had that on hand but I wanted to do the recipe the way you did it before I change anything. No, it does not have the brightener and citronella which is the citrus oils that shine the pots and pans and removes the grease. I had a woman write and say her dishes were very greasy and wondered what she did wrong; it was that fact she used the Fels Naptha. Or at least that is what we figured it was. The ingredients are not exactly the same. I love zote because of the citronella scent keeps the pest away in the summer. :)

I get contact dermatitis from regular dish soaps and bath soap(except Caress and homemade). Do you know if the Zote soap contains less chemicals than other bar soaps? Or do you think this could work with Caress?
How long would this keep if I made it in bulk? I'm excited. I usually have all that on hand because I make my own laundry soap with zote.
Mine kept in bulk (about a gallon) for five months or longer with no problems. Just like laundry detergent there is not really anything that will go bad in this. I'd say a year or two?? I use it so not had any more than that five months. I keep it in the bar from in baskets in laundry room as it takes up less space this way. Storing in bulk already made I just don't have the room, esp after making 10 gallons of laundry soap and 3 gallons of fabric softener. LOL>> I hope this helps. Add some glycerin, about 1 tbsp per gallon or some castor oil for suds and this won't separate as bad. It will separate if you don't. It'll have to be stirred or shaken before each use if not. But it does clean really well. :P

Hi Janie...I have tried 3 times to make the liquid dish soap following your recipe as I watched the video. MY only problem is once I fill my bottles within even an hour, it is so thick that it won't squeeze out of the bottle :( I don't know what I'm doing wrong?? JoPuttPutt try using less zote soap; that is what is harding it up; cut the soap in half; it doesn't take much for a quart of liquid. But once you get it right, you'll know it. It should be as thick as store-bought.

No, but you can use ess oils but some claim they cause a 'greasy' feeling on the dishes. So, if that changes you'll know this is why.

Janie when you have to shred a large amount of it did you ever heat it in the microwave for like 10 seconds just to soften it a little. I never tried it. But I read some do this. I didn't think it would harm it too much since you are going to cook it any way. What do you think?
+Wendy Reinert I have never done that as I cherish my microwave too much to risk a fire! LOL! But let us know how it goes. It shreds best when hardened so I freeze mine before shredding in the hot summer months.

I'm sorry, I'm ADHD so I tried to read all of the Q&A but I just don't have the patience. I have made the laundry soap which I have fun making and actually LOVE the way my clothes clean. I wish I could get the fragrance stronger but I'll settle for the cleaning qualities. I wanted to try this but I'm wondering about the grease cutting properites. Does this cut through grease or do I have to use something else for that? I have sensitive skin BUT want clean dishes too. LOL. Like grandma used to say "no queres nada) Translation You don't want nothing!
Victoria Llamas Add some laundry crystals booster like Alive to your detergent next time you make it, or add a bit to each load. Smells nice! YES!! it works on grease! It might feel a bit 'waxy' when washing but that rinses off for the best shine! The commentors below love it who've tried it. Zote is the only bar that I've used that works for the grease cutting properties plus it has a brightener. I wash my dog in the zote as well and you can see how white and shimmery her fur is. I have sensitive skin too. No problems for me. I get migraines, no problem for me. Add some drops of 'Kirk's Castle Soap or dawn for a sudsing...but it doesn't need to suds...this cleans without the suds!

does it cut grease? I am experimenting with different recipes. your soap has the consistency of the store bought, so far what I have made looks like one big glob of soft soap.
Also I made homemade liquid dish soap with vinegar, water and shavings of Ivory bar soap. At first I thought ok I understand the idea that you don't need suds to clean the dishes however I wanted more grease cutting and a little suds. after this batch cooled and settled it was one big glob. So I reheated it adding lemon juice and one cup of my homemade detergent. It is thickening up like the first batch.
my homemade powdered detergent that I made has Borax, OxiClean detergent, washing soda and baking soda. So I took one cup and added to my homemade liquid dish soap.
So is it ok to have added my homemade powdered detergent and how can I get the same consistency as store bought liquid soap instead of having it like glob.
sowsplace Hello! Yes, it has citronella oil in it and it does cut the grease. So far, everyone who has actually made or tried it, loves how it gets their pots and pans so clean. Now, you don't have to add the bit of ajax to the soap for suds, I only do that because I have it in my head I need suds to wash dishes; castor oil will bubble up as well (found on ebay for cheaper). But to save even more money, forego the suds al together. I made a gallon of this at a time. Try using less soap and use more water in your mixture. It only takes a a Tbsp of zote shavings per reg sized bottle of dish liquid. When I make a gallon, I shake really well during cooling several times. You can also add a tsp. of vegetable glycerin to the mix if you are still having problems with hardening up. Less soap, more water, that should do the trick. Let us know how it goes. Separation is normal, just shake and squeeze! Enjoy!

What consistency should this soap be once it cools and settles in the bottle? Mine is thick and I may have used a SLIGHT too much Zote...what should I add to thin it out & how? I added 1/2 C. Dawn before it cooled so will adding it to a pot of water cause bubbles? Thanks!
Just add very hot water to the solution and you'll have twice as much!

The help with the emulsification wouldn't Dawn soap dish soap be very good at like a teaspoon to that to help emulsify the parts together I know it works very good on pest treatments outside with neem oil and things like that.
Hi Janie, I had a little trouble figuring out how much zote you used. I wish you showed the sliver before you cut it up. When yours cooled did it ever get all clumped back up. Mine got almost like the pieces I melted. I've made dish soap before, but I lost my recipe. I used to make a gallon. Did you ever add borax or vitamin E (to keep your hands soft)?

i would just boil or melt it down and put in a bottle so i wouldnt have to use the bar i would not add any other ingredents like the limon and backing soda i think it does the job just how it is and i use zote for bathing washing close makes my whites look good
I tried 3 times now making this as I watched your video while doing so. I did use the butter scent extract and 2 T of lemon juice. The problem I've had is that within 1/2 hr of filling my empty bottles it was SO THICK and even after shaking VIGOROUSLY it came out in clumps and couldn't be squirted out even. I don't have any idea what I am doing wrong?? Any thoughts or suggestions :) THANKS!!
you may have used too much washing or baking soda.1/8 a cup is 2tbsp and she used about 1/4 cup worth zote soap. your measurements may have been off. hope it helps too much washing soda will make it grossly thick as well as an uneven water to zote ratio.

JoPuttPutt you can place it in a blender with just a small amount of water and blend it a portion at a time. It would turn into a thicker style of liquid soap you can squirt🙂
The same thing happened to me today so I kept adding hot water to my container and finally got it all squeezed out of the bottle into a wash pan then used my immersion blender to break up the clumps adding water till I got it to the right consistency. Just finished washing my dishes and the soap worked just fine just didn't hold the suds.

I made a batch this afternoon. Every so often when I walked by the bottled batch I would shake the bottle. Seems to not separate anymore. In place of the lemon juice I used a big squirt of lemon extract and two packages of unsweetened lemonade. The soap came out looking creamy and lemony and smells fantastic! However, it did not suds up at all when I washed the dishes and, the dishes had a greasy feeling to them. Where did I go wrong?? P.S. My hands feel really soft and smooth!!
Laura M The homemade does not make much suds...but it is not the suds that clean. Try using the lemon juice next time; I know that is what keeps the grease along with the zote ...at bay. Also, squirt in some dawn for grease fighting ....about 2 tbsp per large bottle should do it. Bonners castor oil will get you some suds action if that is still important to you. Trust me, with the lemon juice and the zote...my pans shine!
Janie Pendleton Hi Chef Janie, I am enjoying my homemade soap very much. I think I may have put too much zote in causing the mixture to get super thick. I don't mind though. I just shake it up and it thins out a little. You are absolutely right about the shine it puts on the pots. It shines up everything, including the kitchen sink. :-) Will try the castor oil for a little suds. Thanks for the great video.

would Fels-Naptha laundry bar work instead of the zote ?
I would look up the ingredients in both and do a comparison...on google. I know that zote is safe for dishes. I've only ever used Fels-Naptha once. I love Zote best and that is my go-to soap. Let me know if you find out the answer. Blessings!
It's not as sudsy as I like it to be and it does separate and clog the hole so you can't squirt it. You have to unscrew the top to use it. However, it cleans really well, lasts a long time, and rinses off really well too. All the glasses and ceramic cookware look fantastic.
Add a bit of your store-bought brand to the mix it has glycerin to help keep from separating(adds suds too) or add some Dr Bonner's soap for some suds. I add vegetable glycerin for separating issues. I'm used to using it, so, it's just tricking the mind out of thinking that suds are cleaning dishes when in reality they are not the thing that cleans dishes. Our minds are trained to desire suds though. I've not had a problem with clogged stopper. Glad you like it. Thanks for commenting.

I love it! My pots shine! I use a bit of dawn in the solution as well now and that solved any problems that I had. Plus I wash in really hot water. It can leave a bit of a 'waxy' film at times...but when it dries off, it shines nicely. I hand wash everything. Now when I can, I use ajax with bleach alternative. I don't risk it with home canning and preserving food.
What brand is the lime flavoring and where do you get it, please?
Are you adding the cost of your scents and other ingredients into your cost? Seems like you were just figuring the Zote soap.
