Thanks! Just moving into a place with a dishwasher and trying to go all natural. This recipe looks great, I'm going to give it a try. Thank you so much for teaching me about everything you incorporated as well as sharing your recipe. 🥰

I've bought your book "Detox your Home".... its a good book. I have a curiosity question... The recipe you've just completed isn't the same as in your book. You said the Citric Acid (on this video) makes a huge difference in the quality & Function of this detergent but its not apart of the books recipe and the book has different quantities/ratios of ingredients. What's up? 😊
I just purchased your book and I am very much looking forward to all of the changes I will be able to make without having to purchase special soaps or spend extra money
Thank you so much. I love your book. I love the laundry detergent and all purpose cleaner. I have been having respiratory problems for past month and need to seriously detox my home. I have made fabric spray and dishwasher liquid ,antibacterial cleaner, dish liquid ,and laundry booster softner. I havent had a chance to use everything yet but I couldnt wait to tell you how much I love these cleaners. Tytyty again.
A few questions before I go out and buy all my supplies- 1) Can I use regular castile soap? I got some Dr. Bronner's citrus liquid castile on hand already. Do I need to buy Sal Suds also? 2) In your shower gel video, your recipe calls for *fine* sea salt to get the consistency to be gel-like. In the description you wrote that kosher salt won't work, it has to be finely ground. But in this recipe you use coarse kosher salt. Is it because of how it mixes with the other ingredients that you add later? I would just like to know before I go and buy a huge thing of kosher salt. I don't use it for anything else and they sell it in such big boxes. 3) Have you tried this for hand washing dishes? It would be fantastic if I could just make one recipe for all dishes instead of two!
I was just about to ask the same thing re using castile soap. Hadn't noticed the salt issue on instructions. Have you tried this as of yet, as I see that you haven't had a response unfortunately. If so, please let me know what works for you. Thanks
This video was so great! Of the 10 or so I watched in trying to figure out how to make dishwasher liquid this was by far the most exacting. I'm also super excited to have found you, as well as grateful. My mother-in-law has had a full body rash for a year and it turns out to be chemical sensitivity. She is with a great clinic that is helping her with this, they even have an app that customized the products that she can or cannot buy in the store based on what she's she is allergic too. However I think that the book is going to be a real game changer for her. Normalizing things with your book and content is going to be a big deal. Also making a full shift into chemical free life is going to have a greater effect than just trying to avoid a few key chemicals in the grocery cart. And also the book is something she and I can both get into together and talk about recipes we like and stuff. Also my wife has had long issues for the last 4 years after mold exposure and now has chemical sensitivity in her lungs. And I myself have been chemically sensitive for over 10 years due to intense exposure being a residential finishing contractor. It's a long story short I wanted to extend my gratitude and compliments!
Yes, I see that ingredient. However, I just read the entire write-up on the label regarding "sodium lauRYL sulfate(SLS) and the difference between IT and "sodium lauRETH sulfate"(SLES). It explains the difference between the two which I've never knew!
Doesn't the soap seep out of the tablet holder in the dishwasher? Mine has a release function, I assumed all dishwashers did 🤷♀️ also, if I can't get hold of that soap in England, is there an alternative I can use? I have anaphylaxis to perfumed products, so I'm also not sure whats contained in the soap. Thanks in advance 😊
Hello My Merry Messy Life! You've got a great thing going on here. Since Amazon is part of "the problem", a humble suggestion is to try to work toward being able to offer your book(s)from another source, besides Amazon. Keep up the good work. Best of luck to you!
Yes it does :(. You can make your own natural cologne with essential oils - I've got a few recipes here - mymerrymessylife.com/homemade-all-natural-perfume/
I have used Dri Pak pure liquid soap with hot water and kosher salt, when mixed those ingredients it turned into really thick gel consistency, I was really happy with it, looked beautiful and thick gel, but when I added vinegar all got destroyed 😢 it separated and what was left is water and a layer of cream looking thing on the surface. Why vinegar turned it that way ? Does yours stays gel after you add vinegar ?
Yes mine stayed as a gel. But the good news is that the solution will work no matter what the consistency is, you can still use it. And the next time you make it you could leave the vinegar out and add it into the dishwasher separately.
Yeah that's quite difficult to achieve without artificial fragrances. You could make a linen spray and spray your clothes after they've dried. Also, check out this video I've got on natural dryer sheets - ruclips.net/video/yqDfHW98394/видео.html
Salt dissolves in water. I don’t know how using Kosher salt would make any difference than regular salt. As well how could the salt be what turns the liquid to a gel?
I realize this video is 3 years old, but I came across it today. I thought putting vinegar in the rinse aid cup of a dishwasher could harm the gaskets in the rinse aid cup?
Hi there, I am new to Natural home detergents and I live in Europe and I am not able to find the dr. bronner's - sal suds. Would you know anything equivalent and where to get it? Thank you very much for your videos, they help a lot. Good day
Hi! I haven’t found an alternative yet, but I need to start really looking. The thing is, here in Europe, there’s not nearly the same need as there is in America for making your own natural products at home. In the US, natural and safe products are VERY expensive but here in Germany, at least, they’re cheap!
I measured everything very carefully, but used a Castile soap instead a Sal suds - and mine dishwasher detergent turned out to be very runny. Will Sal Suds make any difference?
So the Castile Soap is a very gentle soap. It’s good to use on the body. The Sal Suds is a very strong soap - not meant for use on the body - only for cleaning objects.
Hi Sharon! You might be able to to, but my recipe for a liquid dish soap is a lot better to use. Here's the link - ruclips.net/video/XgCxH7xDYMg/видео.html
It has a purpose to lift the particles - lemon is an astringent. You can rub it on sticker residue and it comes right up! So it works the same on dishes. It adds to the cleaning power and gives a lovely scent.
@@MyMerryMessyGermanLife Thank you! Would you say that one works better than the other? Lemon juice is cheaper than lemon essential oil which is why I ask.
So many dishwashers have problems with vinegar after a few months of use. Granted they all used it directly in the rinse aid compartment. But still it's scary.
@@MyMerryMessyGermanLife we sure did, even if we follow the recipe on your book, it doesn't gel. Maybe we're using the wrong kosher salt? Mortons coarse kosher salt. We'll try a different brand and let you know. Ty!
@@tricolorjeep okay that's the same brand I use. Well, I'm stumped! I've been making this and laundry detergent also using Sal Suds and Kosher salt and it gels for me every time. Maybe the difference is hard vs. soft water. I think we have soft water here. You might try adding a few more tablespoons of salt to the recipe and try that. I'm sorry it hasn't worked for you thus far!
@@MyMerryMessyGermanLife Thanks, I bought your book and I'm gradually changing out nearly everything. Thanks for all of your research and wonderful advice!!
I just made this and the soap did not incorporate into solution. Nor did it gel. I got out my immersion blender and mixed with that a few times and it still won’t incorporate! After reading other comments about suds coming out of dishwasher, I think I’m going to add 2 more cups of water, and additional salt and citric acid and see what happens…TBC…
Hi Ruhi! It wouldn't be the greatest for washing dishes by hand because of the strong vinegar smell. I do have a liquid dish soap recipe you can check out here - ruclips.net/video/XgCxH7xDYMg/видео.html
@@RuhiSadaf Hi Ruhi! So it could work, but Sal Suds is MUCH better. Castile Soap is best used as a hand and body soap. It does not suds up or bubble up much at all and it leaves an oily residue. So it makes washing dishes rather difficult.
Hi! Okay so you mean 16 oz. of Sal Suds, not diluted with water? I'm guessing a very small amount. A tsp. maybe? I'm not really sure as I haven't tried it that way before.
I used to make dishwashing detergent but it didn't work well. I used to use Milliard citric acid but wow, the price soared! I bought a 10 lb.bag in 2019 & it was $22.25. Now a 10 lb. bag is $39.99 !!! Yikes. I used citric acid to make cleaner for our toilets. Not any more...not at that price because for "toilet bombs" , it took a large amount. That wasn't economical. I can't remember the recipe I used for dishwashing detergent but I remember silverware always looked dull. I was disappointed. I really wanted it to work well. I don't use Cascade or Finish or any of the standard store-bought products...never have. I get products I hope are better for our environment. I definitely am aware that I want to use a product that is safe for us . I need to check them out thru the website I've been hearing about. I make our laundry soap.
I am new to living toxin free so please forgive my ignorance on the subject. Do you not worry about the plastic in those bottles? They look really cool and I get why they need to be plastic to be able to squeeze. But I have been using glass for everything to avoid plastics.
Yeah I so use glass for things that are going in my body, since the plastic can leech into the liquid. But in this case that’s not a worry for me. But you could certainly use glass if that’s what you prefer!
Well..,., I have pH meter so I did use that after making this detergent. The pH is 2.0 Im not sure this works well to greasy dishes. Acidic pH works for stain of water, stainless steel not for greasy, oily dishes. Im hesitate to use this though I made..
I think it's great that you tested it with a pH meter! Did you use Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds or Castile Soap? Because Castile Soap is not good at all for washing dishes and will leave an oily film on them.
@@MyMerryMessyGermanLife I cannot get the Sal suds easily. Instead I used a highly concentrated liquid soap which is all purpose used. Its pH is around 10(alkalinity). It looked almost same as Sal Suds. I tested your recipe for two days, It was quite good for now!! Id like to say wonderful but just two days. The dishes were not greasy greasy ones but still some of them were very oily though. I couldnt feel oily touch. I can expect how they become clean when they are so oily. For two days, I felt this natural detergent is much better other dishwasher detergents(except Cascade Platinum, my no.1 detergent). This detergent got no.2 :) and the best of natural ones. I have used only washing soda for cleaning, and citric acid for rinsing, I could smell fat of meet on dishes. I could smell nothing with this detergent, I think lemon juice is very helpful. I used to wash silicon dishes and some printed dishes with hands because silicon ones get the scent of Cascade and some dishes get damaged. Now, I can put anything in dishwasher because of the diy detergent. Thank you for this recipe. I have the last two questions, do you expect the better result If I use Sal Suds? and the subtitles is written as tea spoon when you say Table spoon. Table spoon is correct, right? Id just like to be make sure :)
How much of the detergent do you put in the dishwasher? I filled up the little compartment and my dishwasher was making a funny noise, opened it up and it’s filled with suds. So wondering what amount you normally use
I enjoy your videos. However I did find this in a NY Times article: "You should not put vinegar in the rinse-aid dispenser in your dishwasher. Vinegar is a strong enough acid to melt the rubber gaskets in the rinse-aid dispenser. Bad. Some people suggest running a rinse cycle with the vinegar in a cup on the top rack, and this tactic can work."
So upset. The dishwasher detergent doesn’t get the dishes, cutlery clean. Some of it that I cleaned in the sink first is fine. But other bits have come out with grease marks still on and it leaves rings in mugs and cutlery isn’t clean and I did your rinse aid too. I don’t know what to do????
Oh darn! I'm sorry to hear that. It works for me, so I'm not sure. Do you have hard water? Also, you might try using less detergent and see how that works.
Right so update. It does work beautifully if I just rinse off the plates etc in the sink. I’m more than happy to do that to avoid chemicals. Thank you. I just like doing my cutlery by hand though. But it also cleaned the inside of my dishwasher beautifully lol. Thank you so much. Love everything you do x
Oh goodness, I wouldn’t keep adding salt, that will change it altogether. It’s hard for me to help exactly when I can’t see what you’re doing exactly, I’ve done the best I can to help so far without being with you in person. The recipe works for and many others, so I’m sorry it’s been difficult!
I just checked the ingredient list of Sal Sud and surprisingly it has SLS which is a chemical and carcinogenic. Not sure why this recipe is called natural.
Yes it is made of almost entirely SLS. But it’s not toxic - Dr. Bronner’s makes their SLS differently than other companies - I have more info about it on my blog. It’s complicated, but basically, the way they make it removes the toxic byproduct. Many natural recipes in stores that are actually safe use SLS, not it’s not always a toxic ingredient. Mostly the problem with it is that it’s rough on your skin and hair.
Sodium hypochlorite isn’t used in any Brand of consumer dishwasher detergent, it would deactivate the enzymes in modern detergent... commercial dishwashers use a sodium hypochlorite based detergent but that’s a different story. Where did you even get this information? It’s not factual. Also manufactured detergents are made to be biodegradable in sewage treatment facilities/septic tanks, it’s not getting dumped directly into aquatic life.
I’m sorry but no you use more plastic making your own.. but I get what you mean. But let’s be real .. you might fill up the one bottle but when you run out of your ingredients then you have to rebuy them and you purchase more plastic throwing out more plastic… so yea.. unfortunately I guess it comes with wanting to be healthier and natural somehow.
I don’t think you use that much extra plastic. My borax/washing-soda/baking soda comes in boxes. Citric acid and vinegar comes in plastic. But, we already buy vinegar for other uses so, we are going to have it on hand anyways. So, really, the only extra plastic comes from the citric acid bag and that is also a multi purpose ingredient. Then, When you add that to the ingredients being less toxic….i think it’s a win-win!

Sal suds main ingredient is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, it’s a hormone disrupter. Are there any options that don’t use these chemicals?
Yeah SLS is a completely unnecessary additive... its only function is to create more bubbles. It ruins skin also
Also contributes to HAIR LOSS.

If I'm making the dishwasher soap and the rinse aid separately, do I just put the lemon essential oil in one of them or both?
I put them in both, but it's not necessary to do that. It's okay to pick just one if you'd like :).
Can I use washing soda instead of sal suds?
No, it will not suds up or have any soap in it without the Sal suds.
Thank you for your reply mam.
Is there any alternatives mam?
I could not get it to be gel consistency.. I used kosher salt?
Okay and warm to hot water?
Can this solution stay good for hand washing dishes
Hi Ruhi! It wouldn't be the greatest for washing dishes by hand because of the strong vinegar smell. I do have a liquid dish soap recipe you can check out here - ruclips.net/video/XgCxH7xDYMg/видео.html
@@MyMerryMessyGermanLife thank you for responding.
One more question again.does dr bronners Castile soap work instead of Sal suds?
@@RuhiSadaf you're welcome!
@@RuhiSadaf Hi Ruhi! So it could work, but Sal Suds is MUCH better. Castile Soap is best used as a hand and body soap. It does not suds up or bubble up much at all and it leaves an oily residue. So it makes washing dishes rather difficult.
If I just use Sal Suds ...how much is enough? I'd hate to see soap coming out of the dishwasher.
The pH is 2.0
Im not sure this works well to greasy dishes.
So I tried this twice. The salt didn’t make it turn to a gel consistency.
And all my dishes had a powder residue all over.
Can you please help
Oh dear! Hmm did you use kosher salt? And use very warm to hot water?
Yes I did. Twice now. I purchased the salt that you had linked
We have hard water and someone suggested using filtered water. I’ll try that next 😔
I’m not giving up because we’re eliminating chemicals from our home.
How much of the detergent do you put in the dishwasher? I filled up the little compartment and my dishwasher was making a funny noise, opened it up and it’s filled with suds. So wondering what amount you normally use
Hi! I do 1/2 tablespoon to 1 tablespoon.
Mine will not gel.
I enjoy your videos. However I did find this in a NY Times article:
"You should not put vinegar in the rinse-aid dispenser in your dishwasher. Vinegar is a strong enough acid to melt the rubber gaskets in the rinse-aid dispenser. Bad. Some people suggest running a rinse cycle with the vinegar in a cup on the top rack, and this tactic can work."
That's interesting! It is acidic. I've not ever had that happen before to my dishwasher using vinegar but I guess anything's possible.
@@MyMerryMessyGermanLife 🤣 miss know it all !
impordant
This is so frustrating.. I’ve waisted so much Sal suds because I can’t get it to a gel consistency.. my dishes come out with salt all over them.
Yikes made this and it foamed up in the dishwasher now I have a constant error light urgh
So it’s only for dishwashing machine and not hand wash
That is correct, for the dishwashing machine and not hand washing dishes.
Unfortunately this recipe is not usable for greywater systems. Sodium anything is really bad for plants and soil.
My recipe coagulated. Turned it into cottage cheese.
Do NOT use regular Dr. Bronners! It just makes an oily product! Down the drain it goes!
This is terrible . DO NOT USE IN DISHWASHER, My dishwasher gave error message 4 times then it spewed soap all over the kitchen floor.
Please, please, please, get on with it... We know all that, we just want the how to do it.
