Comments got deleted on this video years ago. But, originally I had a conversation with someone that lead to me doing PH testing on my home detergent vs a store detergent, and this detergent held up. It really does the same as the store bought powders. I still use this recipe, but instead of fussing with packing it into pods, I just mix the ingredients and then let it dry, before crumbling it up and storing it as a powder in this same container.
Thank you! I am currently using 3 drops of dish liquid to a tablespoon of baking soda for my countertop dishwasher. It works better than the walmart brand ( we have VERY hard water) but still a bit hazy. I'm going to make this.
I have really, really hard water and commercial products always leave a residue on some dishes. I have a mini dishwasher that doesn't have a rinse aid dispenser. So, I have to wash some dishes by hand. It's the kind that sits on the counter. Love it. I get great results with this formula. Nothing crazy and super simple to make. I just use two of those silicone bottom ice cube trays of the right size. I don't make a huge batch and I made a small batch the first time as I wanted to test them before I made a larger batch. Thank you so much for this video
I'm a man making this for myself today! lol totally bummed I've been using Costco pods for the last couple of years. They're no doubt leaving all kinds of micro plastics all over my kitchen stuff.
I figured 24 tablespoons in 1.5 cups. She said that recipe with one cup of washing soda and 1/2 cup citric acid equals 12 tablets. 24÷12=2 tbsps. That is what I would use.
@yadealone Your calculation sounds right..... thank you!!👍 I just stumbled upon this "older" video and wondered how much exactly to use per cycle if using as a loose dried powder instead of molding it.
No need to use Rinse Aid. All you need to do is slide out all trays and air dry as soon as the operation is done. Believe me it’s spot free. Tried and tested.
Clarification please, are you saying these dishwasher tabs REPLACE normal dishwasher detergent, or are they in addition, or perhaps used once a week to super clean? Also, would using laundry detergent instead of the Dawn be ok or better since laundry soap doesn't suds much? Thank you!
Let's explore together (I just made my first version of homemade pods). The idea here is to REPLACE your regular pods. Most recipes have some variation of this. Also, I wouldn't use Dawn or most commercial dish soaps. Instead I'm using Castille soap from our favorite crazy man, Dr. Bronner. Next batch, I'll try my homemade dish soap, made with Sal Suds (also a Dr B product), vinegar, and distilled water.
Please can you tell me why does my mixture doesnt harden once i make the tablets? Like when you mixed yours with dishwasher soap and it became all fuzzy , mine just stays like this fuzzy and never becomes hard even after 12 hrs Last time i made this exctly like this but my tablets didnt hardend i even pressed them really hard so all the air bubbles come out but mine became really watryfuzz after a week in airthight container
I was wondering that too, but if you read again carefully what she said in her comment you have to wait for the mixture to dry and then crumble and the only reason you would have to do that is if there is dish soap. So yes.
I wouldn't. But you could use just the 2 mixed as a powder. Having a little bit of surfactant from the dish soap is nice though to keep fats from clogging up stuff
septics love natural cleaners not harsh chemicals however we put septic green goobler in our system and have only pumped it out once in 27 yrs. never put cig butts or coffee grounds in there.
I wouldn't. Soap and detergents are the same thing, and I think there would be a risk with soap of damaging the washer. But you could leave it out completely
Sounds like rinsing is an issue for your dishwasher. And one thing to check: the filter. Make sure to clean it monthly. Also, I bet water hardness impacts the efficacy of this recipe. But it looks solid.
Can you check the ph of your water from the faucet? And tell us what yours is? Please I want to make some. I’m a widow and have no idea how to clean ‘the filter’ in my dishwasher but I’ll try and find out. it’s a 2 year old Kitchenaid Thank you for this recipe. It can save us $20.00+ per month if it works for us. If we have problems with our ‘water’s ph ‘and if our dishwasher’s filter needs cleaned out .

good info! smart test. where do I get citric acid??
Thanks for the update! That's a very smart move rather than going through the hassle of using mold trays of some such. I will be trying this out. 👍
What do you use for dishwasher salt? Is there a DIY recipe?
@@patsypryor9850I ordered from Amazon

Very informative. I am definitely giving this a try.
This is so informative and helpful, thank you!
When making without the molds, do you still add the dish soap?
How much do I use in the dishwasher if I crumble it into a powder?

What’s the difference between washing soda and bicarbonate of soda and can we use the bicarbonate instead
What do you use as a rinse aid? I'm wondering if using vinegar would be safe? TIA
I don't use a rinse aid. But I'm sure you could try vinegar
@@YouCantEatTheGrass you get spot without rinse aid? is citric acid same use as salt and rinse aid? im new to dishwasher

How much do your molds hold? Do they fit in your tablet holder in the dishwasher ?
How long can I make it in advance? Can I make enough for 6 months and still be okay?
Could you just store in a air tight container and put like a Tablespoon in your dishwasher instead of making the pods?
What is I have a water softener? Do I need citric acid?
Washing soda and citric acid Is enough to clean the dishes? Just use a table spoon in the try and all Good?
Do I need to buy food grade citric acid? Do I still use the Dawn if I am making a powder?
I was wondering that too, but if you read again carefully what she said in her comment you have to wait for the mixture to dry and then crumble and the only reason you would have to do that is if there is dish soap. So yes.
Where do you get citric acid powder?
Can i use vinegar instead of dish soap to bind together?
I wouldn't. But you could use just the 2 mixed as a powder. Having a little bit of surfactant from the dish soap is nice though to keep fats from clogging up stuff
Any thoughts on this being safe for septic systems? I'm new to the septic world and I don't want to mess up the ecosystem.
septics love natural cleaners not harsh chemicals however we put septic green goobler in our system and have only pumped it out once in 27 yrs. never put cig butts or coffee grounds in there.
How well does this work for unrinsed dishes?
Can you use castile soap instwad of the dawn?
I wouldn't. Soap and detergents are the same thing, and I think there would be a risk with soap of damaging the washer. But you could leave it out completely
Just made those. All my glass turned white.. it never happened with regular pods…what would you suggest ? Thank you.
Maybe you used too much? I've never had that issue

Hi, I know this is 4 mo out,but if you call the kitchen aid, help line, they can walk you through the process.
I haven’t been able to find the ingredients, what store did you find the washing powder and Citrus acid
I get citric acid at a bulk food store and washing soda is in the laundry isle at my grocery store
I find citric acid by the dishwasher products at my grocer:WalMart store
can you use defoamer
where to get large citric acid?
Aside from online, amazon, I found a 1lb bag of citric acid at hobby lobby!
OK my question is cost over commercial brands
About 1/4 the price.
What if you don't have hard water?
It should still work the same, it's just easier to clean everything in soft water
Is the recipe written down anywhere?
You should have a mask on when you are doing this to protect your lungs.
Can i use borax instead of the citric acid?
I made your recipe and unfortunately it doesn't harden at all.
Oh [lease get to the recipe
