Sal Suds is considered a detergent. Not oil based as a true soap is. Dr Bronner's website has lots more information about this & on Lisa Bronner's blog. Check out the difference between detergent and soap, both are surfactants but work differently, serve a different purpose.
For anyone interested, I’ve learned you need no more than a 1/4 cup for a load. Half of that if it’s a small load (HE washing machine). I’ve also learn you can use 2 tablespoons of sal suds alone which is 1 3/4 caps. I’ve done that as well. Both ways work well.

Hi! I don’t know if a good substitute, but you don’t need it for the recipe to work well. It’ll be a thinner consistency but that doesn’t affect the performance. So I’d just take out the salt.
my concern is that salsuds has Sodium lauryl sulfates (SLS) in the ingredients. I bought SalSuds after watching your video, but after reading the ingredients on Sal Suds bottle how is (SLS) not toxic? I looked at the EWG and they are saying borax and SLS is not good for you. I did make your recipe and have to say the dishwashing soap came out incredible. II really liked your receipe. 'm just concerned now on the SAL SUDs. What are your thoughts. Maybe I need to do further research.
SLS is in our Sal Suds all purpose cleaner, and here’s what we say about it on the bottle: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a surfactant that cuts grease and dirt, generates copious suds, and biodegrades quickly and completely. SLS is made by combining a sulfate group with lauryl alcohol from coconut oil, then attaching sodium. If improperly formulated, SLS can irritate skin, but our superb formula uses coco-betaine and lauryl glucoside to counter this. Sal Suds is a mild, synthetic detergent, not a body care product. SLS does not, and never has, appeared in any of our soaps since the saponified vegetable oils in our Castile Soaps are much, much better for our skin, and can be certified organic. SLS is synthesized (read “man made” or “processed”) even though it does have a coconut base.

Hi! Video was very informative. Is this detergent recipe hard on the clothes at all? I have heard that other products like borax and or baking soda can wear out the clothes.
I just found this recipe and it looks like a great alternative to the DIY recipes on youtube! Just a question though, would I be able to safely mix/melt in a laundry booster like borax or washing soda, or even oxi clean? I live in a complex where we can only wash with cold water and I neeeeeed all the boosts I can get to clean our messy family's clothes! So throwing them in as powders is not an option
I make homemade laundry soap using a Fels Naptha bar (grated) laundry soda and borax. I add it to water in a stock pot and dissolve over low heat until all is mixed well. This works great in cold water washes.

SLS is synthesized (read “man made” or “processed”) even though it does have a coconut base.
lovely. thank you so much
is there n expiration date to this < like how long does this last?
I’ve had it last many months with no problems, but I didn’t do any mold checks on it or anything. But if you’re concerned you may not use it up in a month or two after making it, then I’d cut the recipe in half.
Thank you souch fo this. Do you know if this is "high efficiency"? Thank you
Yes, it is!
Thank you!!
Does anyone know if this is safe for he washers?
I would like to add essencial oil, but I don't know how many drops ... someone give me an opinion? 😊
Hi! Video was very informative. Is this detergent recipe hard on the clothes at all? I have heard that other products like borax and or baking soda can wear out the clothes.
I've been using Borax and Washing Soda for years and never seen any damage on my high quality clothes made of natural fibers.
Baking soda softens water.
Can you share with us which reverse osmosis unit you have. Thank you so much!
Hi! I think it was a GE one from Home Depot. Sorry, we’ve moved so I can’t check for you!

Question: can you sub sal-suds with Castile soap?
No you really can’t - it doesn’t clean clothes well at all. It’s better for basic household cleaning and washing the hands and body.
Question: do you need to strip your clothing of build up every so often with using this detergent?
No I found I didn’t have to, but I might depend on the type of water you have.
Hello choose 3 of the following ingredients for me to combine to make an effective powdered laundry detergent:
1. Baking soda
2. Washing soda
3. Borax
4. Oxiclean versatile stain remover
Can you please give ratio how many cups of each?
@@krazyfoever this isn't something I'm recommending I'm asking a question
How much do you put in the w ashing machine? 1/4 cup?
What can be a good alternative to dr bronner's sal sud? 🤔
Any natural dish soap would probably work well.
Just use clear bowls so people can see it . Also is it safe for He machines ? How much do u use each time for one load ? Thanks
I use about 1/3 of a cup per load in an HE machine.

Hello, the video is very informative. I have a question, I am not able to get sal suds as it is unavailable in India. Could you suggest me something else which I can use and is available and non toxic? Also can you post a video on how to make a detergent powder instead of going for detergent liquid?
Love from India🇮🇳
Hello! Wonderful to have you here. I hope we can visit India one day! Yes so if you can't get Sal Suds, do you have a natural hand dish soap you can buy there? That would work.
Also, I do have a video on how to make powered laundry detergent! Check it out here - ruclips.net/video/ZdcNTYizChg/видео.html
@@MyMerryMessyGermanLife Ah! We would be happy If you Visit India one day. Don’t you think taking dishwash soap would be toxic, because there’s no natural dishwash soap.
Thank you! What about Castile soap or Epsom salt?
Thank you so much!
Nice!!! Thank you so much!
Hay can u make cheap liquid detergent for dishes that keeps glasses and silverware sparkling nice ...if so send me a link to follow ...ur so cool....thank u stanley...
Hi how does this compare to using Sal suds neat as it says on the bottle ?
You'll end up wasting Sal Suds as it's super concentrated, but I guess you could use just a little bit and it might be similar. This recipe makes it so that it's very thick and easier to pour.
Thank you 😊 that’s great 👍🏼 I was concerned I was using it quickly.
Will it work in a (HE) washer?
Definitely!
Why do you use kosher salt? what difference does it make, except for paying more for the salt?
I’m not sure chemically why we need Kosher salt but all I know is the solution doesn’t thicken if I use anything other than Kosher salt.
Hi thanks for this. So useful. I'm not in USA so we don't have Dr Bonner, but I've just bought some sapone di marsiglia flakes. Do you know how much I would use to substitute the amount of detergent you used here? many thanks
I don’t - I’m not sure how they differ. I’d make a very small batch and experiment!
Be careful putting soap in your washing machine, it can make build up in your machine and your clothes.
Did I miss something about how much to use per load?
👏👏👏 Thank youuu
