Great video. I just did an overseas trip, 2 weeks with a 16 X 13 X 8 two wheel fabric suitcase, went under the seat in front of me the whole way. This is the way to do it, and no bothering with overhead bin space. This of course includes doing some laundry, which I don't mind at all. I hand wash in the bathroom or kitchen sink.
What you think about a 18,5 x 13 x 8 backpack ? would it fit under the seat too ?
What bag did you use ?
Perfect. Less lugging around bulky suitcases.
Do you remember how much that weighed? Heading to Italy and Lufthansa limits carry ons to 8 kg/18 lbs. 😬
As a 6'3" woman, I appreciate your minimalist approach. My best travel hack: when I get back from a trip, I remove clothes, shoes, and makeup bag. Everything else is checked for repairs, cleaned, restocked. I always replace the trip toothbrush with a new one.
Then, when I'm ready to travel again, I simply add clothes, shoes, and my makeup bag. I never "forget" to pack anything, and if an emergency comes up, I can be ready to go in just a few minutes.
2 t-shirts is absolutely wild
I really approve of your message. All many of us need is just under-seat luggage. When at our destination our future self will thank us. My day bag also fits in this one item. Poland in a few weeks. Airbnbs have washing machines. Refreshing video thx. 👏🇦🇺
I love the idea of not having to worry about overhead bin space.
Awesome video!!! A few suggestions: dry laundry travel strips for sink washing, unbound merino wool clothing items. That backpack looks perfect!!!! Thanks for breaking it down and making it so simple!
I just check my luggage for a carefree flight, and bring a handbag or small tote into the cabin for inflight necessities. But I completely agree that the smaller and lighter you can pack, the better.
If I'm mostly staying at one place, wash one, wear one works for me. Merino tees, socks and undies for widest temperature comfort range and a skipped laundry day. Can even wear two merino tees on cold days. I like travelling light for the convenience! Much easier to move about too.
Where you point to the person that always forgets one toiletry item, should've had Aly say "hey yaa!" 😂 I'm ordering that bag also!
Great video! Great packing tips! The backpack from Amazon looks perfect! Only thing I’d never do is wear flip flops and shorts on the plane.
Great video. I also do carry on and personal item only, even when going to Europe for a month. You can now buy laundry detergent in dry sheets that allow you to rip to the size you need for hand washing small items. It also is lighter in weight which tends to be more of an issue for me. 🇨🇦
Love the men focused addition, great dynamic with you two! I use a silicone bag for Toiletries and the vacuum bags with USB powered pump. I can bring a weeks worth of clothes and have them about 1"-2" thick. I fly to Vegas frequently on the "budget" carriers who are notorious for baggage fees and inspections at terminal gates. Never have had an issue. An Osprey Farpoint holds all my clothes, spare shoes, Toiletries, electronics charging kit, headphones and tablet/laptop and fits easily under seat and has room to bring back extras should I buy a few things. Pack smart, save big!
Why not use compression bags? I love them so much! Gets all that air space out and lets me see how much room I have left AND it keeps things clean, nothing can fall out of the bag plus it gives me a built in dirty clothes bag as the trip progresses. (Curious: Was the sunglass case a hard case? if not aren't you concerned about them getting broken?) The toiletries are not easy to get to if you need to pull them out for security so that would need to be moved to easier to get to for me. And I second the recommendation about merino wool, I swear by it for travelling it's the absolutely best for travel; it layers well (especially for chilly airplanes), breathes well for when it's warm, it naturally resists getting stinky so it can be worn multiple days in a row, and it's lightweight. For a month in Europe (carry-on only, goes under the seat so I don't stress out about overhead AND I have all my stuff in my sights) I wore my wool tank top, wool long-sleeved shirts, etc. for days on end, and they dried quickly if I needed to finally wash them (in the sink, absolutely that is how we travelers roll, easy peasy, I like Woolite).
Compression bags still weigh the same. Some airlines restrict weigh to 7kg/15lbs
Hola, as a fellow tall guy (6'7) I enjoy all the Chris videos!! I've been using the 40L x-air backpack from Waterfield, it might be overkill but I love to have extra space in case I buy extra souvenirs for friends and family. Keep up the great content y'all love it!
Well done Christopher. I especially like the Talls to Smalls omage in the background
People only call me Christopher when i'm in trouble... 🤣🤣🤣
Good suggestions. Lightweight travelling is the only way to go.
This was really helpful as I needed to travel light to help my daughter with her unexpected surgery. She was across the country and we were told she'd need help for up to a week. I did have just enough time to get some merino polo shirts from Unbound whom Aly has plugged in some video. A +/- about them: they are 60/40 blend of merino wool and polyester. They are easier care and less saggy than pure merino or merino wool/Lyocell blend. But they don't wick quite as well and not quite as environmentally friendly in manufacturing.
the humidity. I live in Queensland, Australia so when I start to pack I get lost because in real life I would need to wear a couple of outfits a day. I hand wash my work shirt in my lunch break that's how ridiculous it is haha. Thanks for a fab video TALLS haha
thank you for the life hack - I will definitely try the "doing laundry while showering" - especially for my undershirts, they don't get dirty I just sweat on them 😊👍
I'm saving this for the future. One thing I might add is those tiny tide packets or other hand washing for clothes product. It can stretch out the undies and socks over that 7 days. I found I simply have to have a fresh pair of socks every day or at the worst, every two days.
That antiwrinkle spray works great too (Forgot name) but you have to get it into a small "legal" spray bottle. Thank you for the video!
Fantastic video!! I love packing light and these were great tips. I use a Scrubba wash bag and laundry sheets for laundry while traveling and it helps me cut back on items. Thank you!
Chris, please keep this series going for guys! Thanks!
Question. What are the dimensions of the Taygeer backpack? I can't find it on the Amazon site and they have 2 sizes, large and extra large. I'm guessing you have the large-sized one?
Yes this is the large. The real dimensions are 11x17x5. The XL is a couple more inches in every dimensions which would put it over the size limit for a "Personal Item" but still be smaller than a standard carry-on.
Im flying to Daytona on allegiant soon. Im flying personal item only for 5 days. Its a great idea!
Smart move as Allegiant charges for carry-on. However they do have a decent personal item size. (8'x14'x18')
The challenge is that sometimes the space under the seat in front of you will not accommodate even a small backpack; it depends on how the video equipment is arranged sometimes. Aisle seats are often narrower than others…
There’s often a compromise for packing light.
Great video & tips❣️
Spirits contract of carriage 7.2-7.2.5 exempts the following items from your personal item allowance, CPAP devices and carrying bag, one small bag of photographic equipment not to exceed 9 inches by 6
inches by 7 inches, one duty free box or bag, food for consumption on board the flight, and a reasonable amount of reading material for the flight. I take a personal item, a CPAP bag, a photographic equipment bag, and a duty free bag I got years ago, it doesn't specify when you got the duty free bag. Print out the contract of carriage and be prepared to school the gate agents if you want to fly this way.
Great info! Can’t count on overhead storage at all anymore- so many people doing carryons!! So i now use a wheeled underseater. On AirCanada it counts as a carry on!! Bugs me. But at least i can put it under my seat while my friend has to find bin space at the way back.
Yes, I agree. A Delsey wheeled under-seat is all we need. 👏🇦🇺
IMO wheeled underseaters are the way to go. I am currently on the hunt for the perfect one to turn into my daily driver.
Pretty cool! Thanks! I like it!
Thanks. Great advice
I'm going super light for this Fall to Europe.
Great video! Just what I needed!
This video is brilliant! Thank you.
Great Video and I love the "Taygeer" backpack. It appears they come in 2 options. Do you happen to know if the larger one 40L compared to the smaller one would still fit under my seat ? I usually fly United most of the time. I like the fact that I can just put it on my back and get going.
The 40L is going to be your standard 'Carry-On' sized bag. It's not going to pass the 'Personal Item' sizer, however it will likely fit under the seat in front of you. This will be up to the descretion of the flight attendants, as they may request it is stored in the overhead bin if it is protruding to much into the foot space possibly creating a hazard during an evecuation.
Great idea for smaller people.
I'm 6'9". If I can do it, anyone can...and probably pack more!
Chris, 1 more question on the Taygeer. Do the straps tuck in/hide away if you want? It's the one other option I'm looking for, thanks!
Not in the way you're probably thinking like in a separate pocket...BUT, there is the luggage handle strap on the back you can slip them in to keep them from flopping around. Not the same, but keep in mind the bags that do that will have extra bulk.
Assuming you buy toothbrush shower gel etc etc at destination?
Toothbrush is in the ziplock bag and shower gel/soap is at the hotel. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I spy a garmin instinct! 😊
What size Taygeer back pack are you using? Large or extra large?
Great video btw keep it up!
Thats the Large. The XL is more 'carry-on' sized.
Great video and great advice Talls!
Hope Mexico is treating you two well!
Well done 👏🏾
This video is great! Do you or anyone know if it fits West jet’s personal item dimensions?
It does! I made a shorts video so you can see it being tested it out here: ruclips.net/user/shortsPzk-Hs0TfGs
Unfortunately, I will never be able to do just a personal item. I have to use a CPAP, which takes up a huge chunk of real estate (even the travel sized one).
I am trying the carry-on and backpack/personal item, but I’m new to this. I know we are technically allowed to bring a separate bag for the CPAP for free (as a medical device), but I don’t want to travel with three bags, so I need to fit it in my personal bag.
Otherwise, hoping to use carry-on and backpack for my upcoming cruise to Alaska in a couple weeks.
I know it sounds weird but could you post a link to the bag you put your flip flops in…thanks.
Thanks for the great video. How much does the packed bag weigh? In Australia our domestic airlines are VERY strict on keeping within the 7 kg (15 pounds?) limit. I was on a flight last week and a woman had to pay a AUD $75 fee for excess luggage. My ticket cost about AUD $90.
I go carry on overseas, and can do three weeks in one small case,But I’m always overweight in the case. Seven kilos is nothing unfortunately. End up having to check the bag.
I tried the “do laundry” hack but you need to mention whatever you wash needs to be very lite weight otherwise if the country you are visiting is very humid or the AC in your room is very cold you will definitely be wearing wet clothing the next morning…..especially on organized trips where you are in a different place every night.
Before you hang it up roll it up in a towel and twist it with your hands while holding one end with your foot. Comes out 90% dry. Also if you have a sun beam to hang it in, it will be dry in less than an hour.
Or use a hairdryer to finish it off if still damp in the morning. A couple of other items worth taking along…Febreeze (fabric freshener) and/or wrinkle release spray.
I wonder how much that weighs? I'm heading to Italy, and Lufthansa limits carry-ons to 8 kg/18 lbs. 😬
We’re planning 4 weeks in Scotland this fall and hope to do it with our TravelPro Max Lite and a small backpack each. We’re flying BA and their limit for the second cabin bag is 40 x 30 x 15cm (16 x 12 x 6in). Like your suggestions here, everything I’m finding is too long at 18”+.
We’ve found a couple at C$150+ which seems silly. I already have a good pack for day hikes and would likely never use this one again.
We plan lots of hikes so will want a daypack. Only alternative seems to be to check a bag with the daypacks in it and just take 1 carryon.
Any suggestions?
Backpack only would not work in Japan where there's so much stuff to buy 😆
Ship it! That what I am going to have to do, as I don't think there is luggage big enough for all the vintage cameras, and videogames I would want to take home. 🤣
I travel lots for work. I've been seeing a lot of those travel garment bags. Any thoughts on those. Plus i have a Cpap machine ( which is giant pain to deal with.)
spent two weeks in Europe with a back pack and carry on suitcase. Next time I am sure I can take less.
Is a 30L too large to be considered as a personal item ?
It depends on the exterior dimensions. 28-30L sees to be the butter zone for personal items, but if they are soft bags they can stuff into the sizer pretty easily as long as they are not super stuffed.
Great video! Tks to you both :) safe travels
❤
Why doesn't anyone pack night clothes (a.k.a pajamas)?
we sleep naked
@@alysmalls well that's great for you all.but the ones that don't,we will figure it out.have a great day!
lol, for real though - when you're packing light, you're limited to one pair of pj's, which doesn't take up a whole lot of extra room. With a system like this, you won't be able to pack multiple pairs of pjs.
@@alysmalls yes, for sure I can understand your pov.that is something to be considered.less is always better when it comes to traveling. Thanks
We never book a cruise longer than 7 days if the ship doesn't have self-serve laundry. If Holland America is listening, that's why you never got our business.
Why will the Airline hate this? I would think they'd love if everyone had just one personal item.
Because they prefer to make money off of you by charging for checked luggage (and, for some airlines, carry-on as well). That’s why some of the budget airlines are really cracking down on personal item sizes.
TALLs 🤣
Arrogance bs assertiveness. Can’t figure out which.
No socks or shoes

This video is catered towards men, not women who have allergies to new toiletries, dress up their hair, go to galas, and business meetings, who want to ski or scuba and bring their gear…
Indeed. If you watched until 0:25 I linked Aly's other video catered directly for women.
