  • I tested 8 different carry-on bags in different airline sizers to see which ones actually fit vs. what they're like in the overhead bin. We tried Monos, Travelpro, Level8, Tomtoc, mixi, and Dakine bags.
    We test the best carry on luggage for United Airlines, Air Canada, Westjet and more!

    Thank you for doing a live testing for us, your video is going to make choosing a new carry-on so much easier for a lot of people out there! Last year me and my family traveled internationally for the first time in years and we had to buy a carry-on for everyone. I did my research (and wasted so much of my time!): I watched videos, I read REVIEWS. I finally bought four Samsonite Freeform carry-ons just to find out months later (when I couldn't return them anymore) that they don't have the right measurements for a standard carry-on so they won't fit in any of the sizers at the airport. I was soooo mad! I had two options: risk going to the airport and having to check our carry-ons because they were too big or buying AGAIN another set of carry-ons. I figured that the second option was the least stressful one so I ordered four Delsey Helium Aero 19" just to be on the safe side and yeah, they are small. Anyway I'm now a proud owner of eight carry-ons, four of them completely useless!

    • @alysmalls
      @alysmalls  3 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, 19 is small, but at least it should fit pretty much everywhere! I feel your frustration, I've also had a few useless bags over the years!!

    We just returned from Milan with a layover in Mtl. We use Air Canada carry ons that have a certificate of 'Carry On Approved'.... The lady at the gate approached us about using the bag sizer as they were trying to get people to check some of the carry ons.... She was actually a little rude stating that the attached label stating 'Carry On Approved' meant nothing and she was quite annoyed when I pointed out the labels. She didn't end up measuring the bags but it still left a very bad taste in my mouth, especially after a few delays and long layover. We only travel carry on and bought 'Air Canada brand approved carry ons so that we would not need to deal with hassles. Might have me reconsidering the Airline we fly with in the future!

    • @roses.9181
      @roses.9181 3 месяца назад +2

      Air Canada is lacklustre for sure. They're usually rude, and I swear a good chunk of the employees are looking to pick fights with passengers. I try to avoid them. But Westjet hasn't been that great recently either. It's all about making the shareholder happy, not about the consumer.

      “Airline approved” is a stupid tax on people not used to traveling. Airlines can change their policy at will and without prior notice. Plane type can also change without prior notice not to mention airlines give crew discretion on gate checking luggages.
      If the lady at the gate says the bins are full so they are gate checking or it’s for plane balancing reason, do you think the approved label will help you?

    • @bernie.b
      @bernie.b 3 месяца назад

      @@Peizxcv Well she reluctantly backed off after I mentioned the labels. It had nothing to do with balancing - most people don't want to check their baggage because of the continued problems of lost luggage. I have never checked a bag in all my years of flying. She was just looking for gullible passengers. Actually the flight was even held at the gate an extra 40 minutes so that friends of one of the pilots could make the flight and the stewards even cleared out one of the overhead equipment areas for their 'carry ons'....
      What I didn't mention is that we had equipment with lithium batteries that would not fit in our personal bags in our carry ons that couldn't go into belly of the plane....

    • @Peizxcv
      @Peizxcv 3 месяца назад +1

      @@bernie.b The point is if they want to check your bag there is nothing you can really do; It’s bag checked or kicked off the flight. Nothing you can do about special privileges either, they can kick you off the plane to give way for airline employees

  • @planesandbikes7353

    But watch out for the little CRJ and Q400 where majority of roller bags have to be put in the hold. Almost all flights in and out of my city are in these tiny regional jets, so I use a 36L hiking backpack which fits into any regional jet overhead, squishes into 1/2 size spaces between other folks roller bags, and even under the seat in a pinch.

    Sometimes it's not about the bag being able to fit in the overhead bin, it's about limiting the number of bags coming into the aircraft cabin. Too many people opt-in to bring a carry-on bags these days instead of a checking the bag in, because of the convenience or/and not trusting the airline.

    I will admit I fly business class when I fly overseas, so my little IT carry-on hasn't been an issue. I have noticed people walking by me to get to economy have bigger bags than I do and they take up space. Even when I did have to fly economy to Italy last year ( was with a large group), my bag posed no problem. The only annoying thing was people seated behind were parking their bags ahead of their rows and I had to put mine 2 rows behind me on one flight- not happy.

    • @war-painter
      @war-painter 2 месяца назад

      They do that frequently. Early boarders hog all the overhead compartments on rows 1-15, so when you get to your seat in Row 8, all the overhead compartments are full of junk from people seating way at the back. What is worse, those people dress in tank tops and flip flops, not realizing that twenty minutes into the flight it gets cold! So then they are hanging onto your overhead compartment with their stomachs in your face, squeezing through their stuff looking for warm clothes and socks. Newbie flyers.

    Test the Cotopaxi 35L for carryon? It is 22x12x10. I watched the TomToc in your video, but I think it’s shorter. Our airline limit is 8kg so I actually cannot pack my Cotopaxi full because I’ll go overweight. Thanks for your video. I’ll go check the website.

    The craziest thing is having an agent tell me that because I had to 'force' my bag into the cage sizer that it did not qualify and had to check my bag in...I actually did not force it in and just give a bit of a nudge...airline shall remain nameless! 🙃

My carry-on's dimensions are 55cm x 24cm x 37.5cm and the backpack I'm thinking of buying is 43cm x 20cm x 30cm. Am I able to bring the backpack as a personal item? Thanks!

    Just because someone gets through with a bag although it is over the limit, or that it fits in the overhead bin doesn’t mean they have the right to use it. An inch over may not seem a big deal to someone, but put several bags that go an inch over together and the airline has to ask others to check in their intended carry-ons because there is no space. I see it all the time.The question isn’t “does my carry-on fit in the overhead bin”, but “does it stay within the required measurements so other passengers’ bags can also fit.”

      What about the issue with early boarding group passenger putting both their check in and personal item overhead.

    • @Peizxcv
      @Peizxcv 3 месяца назад +15

      What you have described it literally a straw man argument. If overhead bin aren’t enough airline gate check luggages for free because they know there is too much variables to know for certain if all carry-on will fit.
      Not to mention overhead bin size is an airline choice as is seat density. An A321neo can sits 160~210 passengers and Airbus also have 4 different overhead bin design for it depending on plane’s age and airline choice.
      The idea you should stick to size set 40 years ago is just idiotic. What’s your next argument? Passengers should learn Tetris so they can maximize bin space?

    • @bpxl53yewz29

      @@Peizxcv So you’re arguing with airlines who have set the dimensions so they can fit all passengers’ carry-ons? Go cry to the airlines CEOs. The arrogance is astounding. Every one know checked baggage tends to get lost, so even if it’s free nobody wants to do that.

    • @ximengtang6731
      @ximengtang6731 3 месяца назад +13

      What an argument is this?? First of all, have you seen how the overhead bins are configured? They are all divided and each compartment will not fit more than 5 carryons. You are telling me you can fit in a 6th just by shortening each carryon’s width by one inch…

    I never get earlier boarding than Zone 3, and there's seldom space available by the time I get to board. If I take a suitcase carry on I very often face a very challenging situation. These carry on don't fit under the seats, which are too close to slip the bags under even if size wise they can fit. I therefore always have to use a soft backpack, but then am still screwed being forced to put the bag underneath the seat in front of me, and being six foot tall I need some legroom. Small short people are so lucky! I find it unfair to be honest, watching fortunate early boarders with huge carry ons (1 carry on, and one backpack as "personal item" ) taking 2 upper bin spaces each. Airlines ought to enforce their own rules better! I for one would like to see a ban on hard carry on bags.

    If you do that at the gate ….your doing the airline employee jobs for them, they see you do that and will charge you. They are literally watching you when you do that. Don’t get to your gate over early, if its close the employees will not have the chance to check your bag The only solution for flying is to charge everyone for a carry on, let them check 1 bag for free, which historically was how they did it, carryon was VERY expensive.

    From what I see happening, pretty soon the only carryon bag you will be able to take will be a briefcase no more than 4 inches thick, or worse yet, only your wallet, which will be thinner than days gone by because you will be forking out so much to fly with more than just the clothes you have on.

    Hey, thanks for doing this. Very informative and super helpful.
    Now, at the risk of being flamed... It is considered rude for men to wear shorts on commercial aircraft, particularly in coach.
    Especially tall guys like your husband, whom I'm certain is a wonderful person and I mean absolutely no offense. But I can't tell you how many times I have had to endure some strange man's hairy thighs pressed up against me. It's just no fun at all.
    Women are much less prone to manspreading, and therefore shorts on women usually isn't a big deal.
    But your guy, as wonderful as I'm sure he is, is wearing some fairly short shorts. And I definitely would not want to be seated next to him.

    • @alysmalls

      sounds like you've encountered some weirdos which definitely sucks! I think it's important to remember that people are allowed to be comfortable and can also be respectful while doing so. With Chris being 6'9, he can only fit in an aisle seat, and I'm always beside him, so you won't ever have to worry about that 😉

From cancelations, delays, and the worst, rudest, most unpleasant, flight attendant staff in the business they are now a complete failure as an airline. Best to look for other options..
