Starting primary school in the mid 1970's in Melbourne as a 5 year old prep school student I learnt to drop the Fijian accent pretty fast especially in an all white school apart from a couple of Mauritians.
Not counting my parents and a few of their friends we had no Fijian/Pacific Islander role models on the sports field or on TV.
The old man started teaching us Fijian at night in a classroom setting but his Australian friends hijacked it!
As a consequence we lost our ability to speak and fully understand our language.
Not sad at all about it now that's just the way it worked out but I reckon if I lived in Fiji for a year I'd pick it up soon enough.

In Fiji there’s a mix of Indian, black and Pacific Islander due to colonizers bringing them over.
