I have no drama for her preference being the curried stew and dumplings as I use to enjoy it as well but, when you haven't had a boil up in ages yeah that would be my choice but with puha (not the thistle type) but you can't go wrong with watercress or cabbage. We called doughboys, dumplings. Mum would put them on every casserole, but I hated it 😅

@@joshhowe3477 what hate? i done community work/service myself for a year (thankfully it was only on a saturday) and all we EVER got to eat was 2 pieces of luncheon meat and 4 slices of bread lol, so somebody always fired up the gas burner and pan with a little margerine and we all had 2 toasted luncheon meat sandwiches, nobody was allowed to bring their own food it was provided free.

luncheon meat sandwich is a staple diet when you are on community work/ service in NZ, when you have been a bad person and have to work for the government to pay back fines because you are too poor to pay them. the funny thing is you get the meal free because it is so cra*p.
pie sandwiches are a tier level up, definitely, you don't get pastry flakes everywhere and much easier to hold without mince dripping all over and burning yourself.

In NZ we call them dough boys when in boil up. We also have a pudding with "doughboys" and golden syrup. Thats when we call it dumplings.
