    As a person with knee problems I’m happy with the 86 with an auto :), don’t let the auto scare you! Even if you don’t want a manual for other reasons, the auto isn’t bad! Don’t let other’s gatekeeping make you self conscious

    • @Blackdawn80
      @Blackdawn80 2 года назад +32

      I don't believe it's gatekeeping really. There are simply better options with a DCT for the same price if you cannot or chose not to row your own gears. VW and Kia/Hyundai offer similarly priced performance models with significantly improved shifting characteristics.

    I really don’t know why people feel they need an excuse or some kind of medical reason to get the auto. In Europe we learn manual as standard but when people get a sports car, it’s usually auto with paddle shift these days. And if you want that experience, GT86 is a great low cost entry point.

  • @1998lemuel
    @1998lemuel Год назад +3

    As someone who daily drives a manual, has a motorcycle and who spends an unhealthy amount of time on a racing sim rig. If the paddle shifter is responsive enough, I'll take it over a manual especially when all I want to do with it is drive curvy roads. Though, because you're now more focused on driving rather than shifting, you'll tend to drive faster into corners potentially entering corners too fast.

    Re: the transmission: "It's not bad..." Huh? From watching the tach and listening while accelerating, I'd say the upshifting of this automatic-equipped 86 is quick. To get upshifts that quick with a manual would involve slamming the lever into the next higher gear without waiting for revs to drop, which destroys transmission synchros (ask me how I learned that). Also, when trying for the best 0-60 time, any manual trans requires dumping the clutch at raised revs, causing excessive clutch and rear (in this case) tire wear, while the automatic can be jumped-on repeatedly from a standing start without the penalties. It may not be as fun and involving as a manual can be, but it looks to me like choosing this newly-improved '22 BRZ/GR86 automatic should no longer require excuses.

      It seems to me reviewers like Topher and others from the USA seem to think that it is a "badge of honor" to drive manual in petrolhead circles and they need to keep pretending manuals are better in order to belong with the "cool kids" and not alienate their fanbase. It is weird when someone from Europe, like myself, is watching such channels. EVERYONE AND THEIR DOG drives manual in these parts.... It is nothing special, and it does not take skill. Up until recently you couldn't get a driver's licence here without a manual transmission. There is nothing special or "involving" in driving a manual, it is tedious, and from what i have seen, it is extremely rare that a driver can consistently get 0-100 acceleration times that match the official factory numbers, in the real world. This applies to all cars not just this GR86. Yes once in a blue moon drivers may match it, or perhaps even surpass it, but consistently at all times? Nope. It is far better to let the machine do its thing. And keep your whole attention and brain + hand coordination resources on the road.

Cant say much about other cars these days. It looks like it takes about a half second when clicking the paddle and the transmission shifting. That isn’t instantaneous like a dual clutch but it’s not bad at all. In fact it’s a very decent response time for a 6 speed torque converter auto and might be better with a TCM tune. It’s not a ZF 8 speed but it looks like an improvement over the previous gen despite having the denied downshifts which can be fixed by a tune if a company is willing to R&D it. I personally like it and think the paddle shifter designs look sporty and fit the car, but obviously a manual is the better option here given the performance and full experience. Still would go auto lol.

    it has a built in safety that doesn't allow downshifts above 4k. prevents damage and gives you 1k rpm of headroom in the next lower gear. the real issue is just that the gears are a bit too long... I get that it would be better if they allowed downshifts to redline, but to me that's really not a big deal and will be tuned out by someone im sure.
    I have a 600whp Supra in manual as the weekend car, and this car is still a ton of fun to drive in the mountains (manual mode AT), but then you can pop it into regular AT when you get stuck in traffic etc. You also get adaptive cruise and a bunch of other stuff on the AT that's way better for DD duty.

      simple fix for automatic is to just install the m/t frs differential that has a shorter final drive. that will make all gr86 automatic gears shorter

    • @DylanTK
      @DylanTK 2 года назад +1

      @@jonasbaine3538, the MT diff is the same diff for zenki 86/BRZ (4.10), and while the kouki manuals had the 4.30 that wont change the world with the auto (I'm getting one of these tho). to actually get the auto to perform more similar to the AT you need like 4.40 gearset or better. that said, second gen diff is a 3.90 vs the manual 4.10, so the changes are a least a bit more pronounced when upgrading.

      I neither prefer or dislike them. If the auto is good, then it’s good. In some cases, the auto is just bad (like the WRX’s CVT), so the manual is the only logical choice. In the BRZ/86’s case, the auto is decent, so it’s not a bad choice at all. In the Supra’s case, the auto is great, so the it’s a toss-up between the auto & manual.

    Thanks for the review. The black wheels match the black mirror caps on the GR models (versus body color mirrors caps on BRZ). One feature with the AT is when in 'sport' mode, the sound maker increases in volume - to the same level of the manual. The AT is a bit quieter of a car than the MT without needing to unplug the sound maker when driven normally/cruising. Lower engine RPMs at highway speeds help too. The Michelin PS4 are a big disappointment in terms of road noise and tramlining.

    Normally I'd go for the manual option if it was available, but in this case I would take the auto. The manual is probably the more outright fun option but the gearing on the 6 speed is too close together and it revs too high on the highway. This auto has perfect ratios, not to mention those quick, crisp, and consistent shifts and the snappy manual mode. I don't think the gearing is too tall at all, I think it's just right.
