I commented before seeing NIN last June. I said many times that his style and kit are too heavy...they drown out the live shows. Maybe in RUclips that has some validity. But after seeing NIN live again...Rubin is nuclear. I’m a drummer...suppose most of us are as we are watching a drum upload. I have seen lots of live bands and NIN 4 times since 1989. Mind blowing every time but last year in London was staggering. Rubin is a powerhouse.
Seeing the sweat stains on his ride make me feel less guilty about not cleaning mine. Love his approach to drumming. Less counting, more feel. Great heavy groover.
What's crazy is Angels & Airwaves first & previous drummer Atom Willard was with NIN. Now /\̶\/̶/̶\ has Ilan Rubin who is currently the drummer of Nine Inch Nails
Anyone know how he tunes the heads maybe reso higher than batters? I like to tune resos medium and then batters low/even slack sometimes. I bet he just tunes same/ same. It is way easier. LOL
When the batter head is so big, there is a tonne of air to move inside the drum on every hit. A regular depth shell would cause a noticeable delay in the air hitting the resonant head and coming back to the batter side. Unless you are playing with a lot of space between hits, that's a big problem.
@Barber 82 why don't you provide the correct answers for them instead of just saying wrong? Makes you look like you don't know either. So let's hear your view/knowledge of drums.
I think Ilan is great. He has a great attitude for NIN during this era. Josh was perfect for his time in the role. You can't compare the two together.
Ilan is my favourite teenage mutant ninja turtle
Too bad he got abducted by aliens just 2 days ago
He is the BEST NIN drummer! Adds a whole new dimension to the songs.
best drummer NIN have ever had, there I said it
Josh was truly brilliant. But, Ilan is more versatile and a much better showman. So I concur sir.
Correction. Freese then Rubin.
Brandon Trahan haha you're a comedian
Freese is no where near this guy. You guys just view Freese as an industry standard
Anthony Patterson What does age have to do with it?
That snare is insane.
The beat that he's playing is the drum beat from the song the disease by Angels and Airwaves
what a nice guy, and an incredible session guy i'm sure... perfect decay on the snare absolutely.

How's he getting that snare sound like a gun shot? How high or low is reso head?
I think he’s playing mercenaries by angels and airwaves in the background :)

CASUAL CAV NIN drummer history says otherwise. When was Atom Willard with NIN?
Apologies for being three years late with this comment. I just saw it and went, “Uhhh... What?”

Bonham & Grohl's love child 😁

Anyone know what he uses that fourth pedal to the right of the main kick pedal for? 1:17
+John Journault It's for triggering kick drum sounds
Why such a shallow bass drum? How would it effect the overall sound?
The deeper the kick, the more boom. The more body in the bass drum sound.
The more shallow, the more attack. Less body and more beater.

Beast
I'm not a fan of the sound of his drums, but I LOVE the way he plays.
Please make one for Chris Vrenna and Ginger Fish.
what q drums did he use at the drum off 2011?
He was actually playing Orange County Drum Percussion drums in that
Stephen Ryan are you sure?
yes! I think he switced to Q around 2012/2013 but don't quote me on that, but I do know he was playing OCDP for that drum off!
They were Q Drum prototypes made when Jeremy and Ilan were still at OCDP.
Stephen Ryan OK cool thanks
What did the interviewer say at 5:05?
That drum loop is cool but its not 8 and a half minutes cool
Power house
The long lost son of Gene Simmons?
Musician for hire, great technician.. But not the artist..
Rebellion PL check out The New Regime. That band is all Ilan...everything is written by him, instrumentals and lyrics/vocals.
What a funny comment. Odd for sure.
he has a great album that he did alone. Learn something before you yap
