I had to replace my Onkyo receiver in Jan. 2015, when the power transformer failed. Treated myself to a Marantz SR5007, and have been using that ever since for both movies (7.2 channel) and 2channel stereo for music. To me, it sounds absolutely awesome, and never fails to deliver. I would recommend Marantz to anyone.

I’ve owned 3 high end Denon Amps and will never buy another one. Two of them blew the HDMI board and the third blew the power supply. The cost to service them was almost as much as buying a new one. Switched to Yamaha 3080 and it’s worked flawlessly for 2.5 years.

I've managed to switch brands everytime I upgrade my AVR. Started with Pioneer, then Onkyo, then Yamaha, and now Marantz. Never owned a Denon so I can't speak to that experience. However, I've been so happy with my Marantz that I'll likely go with them again the next time I upgrade.

I’ve owned Denon and Pioneer Elite both are excellent. I even had great luck with Sherwood in the past. I have not had good experience with Onkyo, and neither have people I know that all eventually dumped them for something else. My brother likes Denon and Yamaha, but on the same set of speakers I think his Denon sounded better than the Yamaha he upgraded too for Atmos. Yamaha audio reproduction always seems a little too sharp and bright, not treble heavy, but just focusing more on higher frequencies and muddying the mids, and it can’t be fixed with an equalizer. Might just be a receiver/speaker pairing issue for him.

Because you eliminate all the noise and interference of the amplification . See you.

This doesn't only apply to their newer receivers. My father owned a Denon DRA-375RD since the late 90s, last week he gave it to me because he bought a new one. Even though it's now more than 20 years old, the device still works like a charm. The inputs are more than sufficient for my usage and the sound quality is excellent. It still outperforms most of the new, so-called "hifi" receivers from other companies.

I bought a refurbished Onkyo TX NR656 about a year ago. It was about $225 USD and it’s 7.2 . It has all the features I need, including some I don’t, like ATMOS.
What you didn’t speak of is sound signature. Yamaha, for example, traditionally has a more “rolled off” upper mid and high range, which is less punchy and perceived as more “warm”. Onkyo was and still is more punchy and upfront sounding, on average.
I think the Denon sound signature is more punchy now also- similar to Onkyo. Sony would be in that category now too. It would be good to speak to this topic rather than only what features they have. Also in how to match them with certain speaker brands, which are all slightly different.
I like, for example, the more punchy and up-front sound signature with no rolled off highs. Not everyone will like that, however.
As such, I have mostly Klipsch R series speakers (base model, but far better than the old Ikon/Synergy line) running off my Onkyo, and am very pleased.

Lots of these qualities seem pretty common with most modern receivers. That being said my next receiver may be a Denon. Onkyo used to have great FM tuners and were very durable. So I recently bought a Onkyo 5 disc CD player from the Best Buy showroom--but it starts skipping about 19 minutes into a disc. Years ago I bought a $1,000 Denon 5.1 receiver after about 10 years, it developed a noisy channel. Driving a 4ohm speaker is important to me too. Waiting to see what the HDMI 2.1 implementation is on 2020 receivers.

My 7 channel Onkyo TX-NR737 (before HDR support) was my first "real" home audio system. It was amazing! I first tried to upgrade to the latest (9 channel) Onkyo RZ830 and I returned it for various reasons. I ended up getting a Denon AVR-X4400H and like it too. I think the Onkyos sound better for 2 channel audio, but do not handle surround sound as well. The Denon seems to produce more sound in various surround sound modes. The Onkyos seem to produce a better phantom image and sound stage, especially the RZ830. That had a great 2 channel sound. Sticking with Denon and am considering getting some separate higher end mono amplifiers (PS Audio Stellar) to power my mains.

I have the Marantz 6012 because it was cheaper than the Denon 4400 at the time I bought. The main reason for me going Denon/Marantz was the ability to limit room correction to only below the Schroeder frequency, which are the only frequencies where room correction provides a benefit. The only other systems that allow this are expensive, high end processors.

In my many receiver sound quality comparisons over many years, with all neutral tone settings,
      the Yamaha’s were consistently brighter,
      more forward,
      usually less/lower reproduction of bass,
      giving a thinner sound.
(This is their reputation also, it’s well known.
So people who like more emphasis on highs/treble response go for Yamaha.)
      Denon and Marantz are known
      for more solid, thick,
      meaty bass,
      and a warmer sound,
      (while still being
open and clear in the highs.)
      This is what I like,
so I’ve had Denon for a long time.
I’d love to know more about how
      Denon/Marantz
      compare to
      Onkyo and NAD
      in terms of signature sound/
      brand sound characteristics.

@@joentell It is tough to quantify. Especially as I formed my opinion unscientifically several years ago and have stuck with Denon since. I wasn't blind testing, either, just switching the whole system out and using for days at a time. I just got the impression the Yamaha sound was a bit 'flat', compared to the Denon's more fuller sound. With Gallo Nucleus ref. speakers back in the day, I also felt the Denon offered a much clearer soundstage. Since I've stuck to speakers with decent tweeters and top-of-the-range Denon amps, (I used to pick them up used for a fraction of their original price as each new model came out with an extra codec or two, the high-end crowd would upgrade and dump their 1-gen-old $3,000 model for a few hundred bucks.) I haven't needed a centre speaker. People don't believe me at first when I tell them that, when they can clearly hear voices/instruments (seemingly) coming right out of the TV screen.

I actually went with a Pioneer receiver, one of the class D amplifier models for my home theater system. The efficiency of the amp helps tremendously when placed in a cabinet or a smaller area as they won't get heat soaked as they put out much less heat than conventional class AB amps. Class D is also more energy efficient which helps when receivers are on for long periods of time.
To me the amplifier is what sold me on Pioneer. Others have different priorities. Luckily we have many good choices out there.

Agree on most and really enjoy my D&M, except for handling 4 ohm speakers. On my old Denon AVR-4802, had trouble with 4ohms loads and its gone in to protection mode/shutdown. I've upgraded to a Marantz and an outboard McIntosh Amp for the front L/R channels which have no problem driving the 4 ohm Polk Audio LSi25 in a home theater environment. My reason to go with Denon was, in the Mid/Low price range, your only other option is Onkyo and while I was a huge fan of them, my last 2 receivers both died within a few years. Looking around online a lot of people have had issues with Onkyo too. I almost went with Pioneer until I read that Onkyo merged with them and looking at the rear of the systems the Onkyo and Pioneer look very similar now and I am NOT taking another chance with them.
The only other mid/low option was some of Yamaha's line and they're laughable with how little ports they give you.
So it came down to Denon by default. I've read mostly good things online, so I'm hopeful. It was pretty easy to set up and the UI is the best I've used for an AVR, but that really isn't saying much, the UI is usually unintuitive.

I have to disagree. I own a Denon AVR-X2300, it replaced a Sony STR-DN1040, and while the Denon has a lot of features (I bought it for the Dolby Atmos compatibility) and it has decent sound, the Sony's sound was better. I'd also recommend people look at Yamaha's offerings. However, no matter who recommends what you're buying to what your ear likes hearing so do some listening tests if you can.
BTW, for the price of a Denon x*300 you could buy a PS Audio Sprout 100, which is much better sounding still, but much more limitee on features.

@@joentell besides better sounding for music and films (and for that you'll have to do a listening test to decide if I'm right or not) there's the more modern graphical interface, and using the automated speaker setup is faster, and easier than Audessey's (spelling). It's pretty tough too. I brought it over to a friend's house a few months after I bought it and a friend of his accidentally fell on it and sort of crushed it. I took it to the local Sony authorized repair shop, cost $75 to have the chassis pounded back into shape and electronics checked to be sure I wouldn't electrocute myself and the Sony kept on going and sounding just fine. It still wobbled on a flat surface but a couple pieces of cardboard under one of the feet fixed that. I'd still be using it but Dolby Atmos came out and I wanted the feature. Denon was one of the first to offer Atmos so I bought it and a set of those add-on Atmos cap speakers and liked it. I sold the Sony, told the buyer about its accident, and they still bought it for $200. I ran into the guy a year ago and told him I should have kept it. He loves it. The newest model, the Sony 1080, is the top pick, over the Denon and Marantz, Onkyo, Yamaha, etc over at What Hi-Fi. It has Atmos and all the other bells and whistles. I'll say one thing, if it's in your budget, which will have to be a lot more, check out PS Audio. I had their old Elite Plus, integrated amp that I bought new when it came out in the late 70's or early 80's. It had been sitting in the garage for 20 years and for a lark I brought it in and hooked it up to my system, and it blew the Denon out of the water as far as sound. I ended up selling the PS Audio gear to someone in another state for $500 , he's a genuine golden ear audiophile too, worked with some of the greats, like John Iverson.
Anyways, go audition the Sony or if you have deep pockets, the PS Audio. (I've been eyeing their new Sprout 100 integrated amp that's about $500-$600, the same ballpark as the Sony or similar Denon, and going back to listening in stereo, but REALLY GOOD stereo. )

Agree on Sony but make sure it’s the Sony ES (Elevated Standard) line of products. No doubt Marantz and Denon (D & M Holdings) have got the latest technology built in to their receivers. I still think both the build quality (5 Year Warranty) and the audio of Sony ES is preferred. Hopefully Sony builds a new model to replace the Sony ZA5000ES. The flagship Sony STR-DA5800ES is also fantastic if you don’t require Atmos.

Hi. iPhone/iPad has the app called DeRemote, for both Denon and Marantz . It allows you you to manipulate every speaker and subwoofer individually. And it’s free. From what I can see , it allows for all models. Every model had different features.

I paired it with some Schiit autio, Kleptch ceiling speakers, an Emotiva Sub and a Sony X950G TV. Plus a Sony WM1000xm3 & T1 headsets. For a small room; I don't think you can do better... Eg: VSX LX 303 or 304 9.2 Dolby Atmos, Has Great Features,Power ,Super Signal all at a Price that Denon or Marantz can't even Match to. So I believe it's like

I recently bought a Marantz M 5005 integrated amp From England and i bought a 110V -220V converter. It has been working well, It cost $500 in the US and $250 overseas. I Love it, I have two small Marantz speakers in the rear and larger Marantz in the front. The ones in the front keep kicking the breaker in the receiver but the rear speakers don't do that.I have swapped channels and still have the problem, that tells me it;s the used big Marantz i have in front are detecting a surge of some sort. If you know a way I can stop them from doing that, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hope what happened to Pioneer/ Onkyo doesn't happen to Denon/ Marantz. So far their buyout hasn't been impactful like it was for Pioneer/ Onkyo. Sad to see these top notch companies get swallowed up. Who's left nowadays? I'm going to hang on to my Pioneer Elite when it was the old Pioneer. Just had to reply. I’m 58 and on December 10 was in my mancave which had 2 PIONEER ELITE PLASMAS. A PRO 150FD AND PRO 1150 HD + 60 inch PANASONIC ZT60. MY 60 INCH PIONEER? Less than 1700 hours. Plus 12 DEF TECH SPEAKERS and much more. I’m disabled- broken neck in 3 places and 70 -100% paralyzed from chest down. Fire alarms go off and I’m in room over garage. Crawled across floor to door. Flame & smoke everywhere as garage below was start of fire. Made to top of stairs and pulled myself up as floor was giving out. Dove head first down 19 steps -thru smoke, fire, broke 3 ribs -cracked more, knocked completely unconscious- died, saved by fighters- CPR - Chapel Hill Burn Center in aCOMA for 3 weeks and ICU foe 8. Returned to 100% burned down house and ZERO PIONEER, DEF TECH, DENON OR ANY TRACE OF HOME THEATER. HAPPY TO BE ALIVE, BUT YOU ARE RIGHT..... ELITE PLAMAS WERE AWESOME. GREAT VIDEO‼️👍🏼

I can respect this video for sure, my personal experience with Denon is mostly positive. My Denon AVR has overheating issues despite being in open air after 30 minutes to an hour at 3/4 volume. The Denon AVR would shut down (Thermal) and give me a red blinking light, I could turn the unit back on again after it cooled some and the sound was good... but lacked the punch I desired. I have had experience before with Onkyo and they were JUNK, brand new in the box and hooked up 7.1 speakers I toasted the AVR unit within 3 hours... in the middle of a house party. :( I recently upgraded to a Yamaha RX-A680 (Aventage 7.2) and I'll never buy anything else again, the power and clarity this unit provides was much better than my Denon by leaps and bounds. This pushed my Klipsch speakers to their limits as well, I have plans to add a second Yamaha YST-SW315 to my home theater as well! Love the channel, thanks for the great vid!

    • @troyfordguy1345
      @troyfordguy1345 5 лет назад +1

Tristan Jones if that were true wouldn’t there be an aftermarket for that sort of thing? I know what the obvious solution is but why release a product that overheats? Just bad design IMO... my Yamaha does just fine, despite it not having any fans.

@@troyfordguy1345 There is an aftermarket. Here is an example. www.acinfinity.com/
Why is there a huge aftermarket for cars and trucks because big cars manufacturers don't want to be bothered with the customer service on those lower ticket items. In a perfect world there would be auxillary fans in the box with the AVR. But that is not the way that business has ever worked.

Manufacturer does not matter when you spend $1000 on a receiver they’re all the same competitive price and features.

I'm from the sound first, features later school. If I were comparing today I think I would include Parasound. If you are going to build a multi-channel home theater system from a 2- channel start-up, try starting with a really good 2-channel integrated amp with an audio/ video pass-thru. I think you will find a big difference.
And if you must have Bluetooth and the amp doesn't include it, you can add an outboard unit at anytime with the advantage of upgrading in the future.
One tip. If someone is going to use small main speakers with subwoofers initially, it would be good to choose an amplifier that can block low frequencies going to the main speakers.
