    Man I must say I never thought that this build would have me thinkin!!!! I usually look at builds to learn. I have a Mini Cooper S and for year I wanted a car that I could work on if anything went wrong. The cars today are compact and full of computerize non-sense for no reason. Although I recognize that this is not easy but it will give you a sense of Pride and Joy when completed. I was looking at buying another factory made car due to compact nature of the Mini Cooper but now you like others, I am looking at a KIT CARS. Must check the budget? Thank you for inspiration I might not have the funds but now I know there are better options!!!!

    How about some TrimLock edge trim or some sort of padding where your heater hoses run across the aluminum cutouts in your storage box? Hose vibrating on the aluminum edge will wear a hole fast. BTW today I washed, clayed and Meguiar’s Hybrid Ceramic Waxed my ‘05 Lotus Elise in the garage. Great stuff never used before. Car looks better than showroom finish. Got motivated for garage work after watching your vids. Stuck here in Kentucky with nowhere to go. Love your videos!

    Gabe, that heater control valve looks like it closes all the fluid when shut. On GM engines you still want water to circulate through the water pump heater outlet and inlet so you should have an H pipe or something connecting both heater lines. Otherwise the engine can overheat. A couple companies make specialized heater control valves for LS/LT engines. I’m doing an LT4 build and using a HCV from Old air products.

    Next time on the yoke on the steering shaft if you remove the bolt all the day and stick a screw driver in the split and tape it a few times it opens the spacing a tiny more and allows the shaft to slide right in. Install bolt tighten and it’ll be good to go. I don’t see mush issue with removing a little of the coating as long as you don’t gum up the splines, and it’s a little more likely to build up corrosion over time but that’s a lot less of a fear as this isn’t a daily driver or in rough conditions.

    • @UltimateUltimaRS
      @UltimateUltimaRS  3 года назад +2

      I'm using the Porsche G97.50 which is an H-pattern manual box. I am hoping that some company will make a stand alone controller for the new Corvette C8 transaxle (TR-9080) and upgraded clutch discs since it will bolt right to the back of my LT5 and would probably be the best bet as far as integration into the GM ECU. There are Ultima guys using air shifted Albins sequentials though so it's definitely doable.

    Are you putting aluminum pop rivets in freshly drilled holes in a steel tube chassis? Or are they stainless steel shanked rivets? As a retired aircraft mechanic, I would be considering the possibility of future corrosion between those dissimilar metals. We use Cherry Loc rivets in aircraft assembly or repair work, which have a stainless steel mushrooming part and the stem snaps off flush with the top of the finished installed rivet. That bit of shank adds strength.

    • @UltimateUltimaRS
      @UltimateUltimaRS  3 года назад

      I believe they are steel rivets that bond the aluminum to the tube chassis. Once the holes are drilled into the chassis, I spray cavity wax every three holes to prevent corrosion. Those Cherry Lock rivets are next level and it would be nice if those were used in the kit.

The only reason I keep putting it off is I think it's going to be extremely difficult finding someone that will insure it without any mileage limits or "parade only" limitations. I know during the build, your homeowners insurance covers it (already looked into that). Have you gotten far enough along in the process to start the insurance search? All of the insurance research I've done, the insurance firms have black-listed the Ultima brand. I'm eager to see what you come up with.

      Unfortunately there isn't a way to do that. To make sure none can be heard and to prevent corrosion, cavity wax is sprayed into every third hole before anything is riveted into place. I have heard of guys using expanding foam as well.

      @@UltimateUltimaRS nice, I've heard of the expanding foam as well. It''s a shame the factory didnt leave any well placed holes on the underside or on the ends for you to blow it all out before capping them.

    Is there an electric power steering option for the RS?

    • @UltimateUltimaRS
      @UltimateUltimaRS  3 года назад +1

      Not directly from Ultima, but there are several owners who have fitted electric power steering to them. Definitely possible and doable.

      @@UltimateUltimaRS Ok, good...at least it could be retro-fitted at a later time if you should so desire power assist. Thanks, great job.

    nice but you always wrap exhaust pipe wrap wet that way when it dries it bonds to the pipe and makes it last longer and less chance if it coming loose of fraying!!!!!!!!!!!

      @@UltimateUltimaRS It depends on the tire sizing, geometry, and if you have to negotiate tight parking areas, a lot. I'm getting close to 50, so a little extra help isn't a bad thing.

    A lot of home chassis builders should really examine the chassis on the car. They are overbuilding to the extreme when simply guessing what is adequate for a given strength. Box sections and knee or cross bracing multiplies the strength by over a factor of 10 to a single pipe. Even if you don't have any idea what material strength is, most newer CAD software has built in failure analysis based on decades of quantitative data and testing.
    Overbuilding a watch will make it last forever. Overbuilding a chassis in what I've observed is adding more than a half ton in excess weight. Now you need bigger brakes and more power to accomplish the same objective. It doesn't make the car safer for those that plan to say more is better. It makes the car less able to maintain grip at speed, take much longer to stop and so on. Making the odds of a crash increase.
    Porsche 917k? Under built death trap, never designed for impact really. Ultima is a near perfect example of chassis building. It even has a considerable safety margin built in but remains ultra light.
    Ultima is really an engineering marvel, one of the best you can get or build. Love it!

    • @UltimateUltimaRS

      I try to put about 4 hours per day into it. Sometimes less, sometimes more. But I'd say that's about average. Time really flies during stuff like this though so 4 hours goes by in what seems like 45 mins.
