  • A short review of the Lancair LX7 with Ken Wolf (not from Pulp Fiction LOL). We meet during the CLIMB event which provides an early introduction of aviation to elementary and secondary kids in Jacksonville. The event was held at Cecil Field (KVQQ) in Jacksonville, Florida.
    FROM RDD Enterprises:
    The LX7 is the foundational model of the LX7 series of aircraft. This model is a piston powered, pressurized cabin environment, retractable tricycle landing gear, high performance aircraft. The LX7 was born out of a love for high cruise speed and safe slow speed handling characteristics. The Continental TSIO-550-E engine produces 350 Horsepower for take-off and climb, directing that power smoothly to a metal, scimitar Hartzell constant speed propeller. A pressurized cabin is key to reducing fatigue of the pilot and passengers while enabling flight at higher altitudes with a greater degree of safety. Pilot centric workload reducing features abound in the LX7 as the safety of the occupants is the highest goal of the design, from dual-redundant main spar structures in the wing, to a whole aircraft parachute system, to standard airframe deicing equipment, the LX7 incorporates everything you may want plus many things you need to reduce workload and enable the pilot to make better decisions. The instrument panel contains an envelope protecting autopilot with an upset recovery function and large displays for situational awareness. Each of the four seats is appointed with heaters for the bases and the backs to provide additional comfort for everyone. The large windows accommodate a great view from the pressurized capsule that is capable of transcontinental flights, so you can see the sights from San Franciso to Washington D.C. non-stop.

    The LX7 comes as a turboprop version as well. 275 TAS on 28-30 gph with somewhat reduced range and there is a bigger turboprop engine available with 315 TAS at 40 gph. Pick your favorite flavor! Ken

    The only plane in the world that’s better than the Panthera especially since you don’t have to look through a huge Ibeam pillar going down the center of the windshield and actually has the strength to go well over 200 kts, unlike the Panthera that has a very weak tail severely limiting its VNE speed. Now they just need to put a MT reversing Prop on it to get into the shorter runways and it would be perfect.

    • @speedomars3869
      @speedomars3869 3 года назад +2

      The Panthera is a joke compared to the LX7. It is far slower and has far less range.

    • @tropicthndr
      @tropicthndr 3 года назад

      @@speedomars3869 Panthera is no joke, all the possible new Mooney buyers are dumping that stupid plane and going for the Panthera and the rest are trying to sell their planes for the Pipistrel, since Mooney has become the real joke in performance, no weight carrying, embarrassing landing gear, abysmal landing performance. Even an old Comanche 260 is better at everything than a new Mooney, even the flaps are better on a Comanche than a Mooney.

    • @speedomars3869
      @speedomars3869 3 года назад +1

      @@tropicthndr You are smoking something. The Panthera is not in production...it is an EXPERIMENTAL kit plane right now. It is not certified. It will die like Mooney died for two big reasons. 1. it is made not made in the US and it has no support network. 2. it has retractable gear making it hyper expensive to insure and maintain. 3. its range and performance specs are unimpressive. 4. no one has seen one yet in person. who is gonna buy a plane you can't sit in or see?

      @@speedomars3869 The panthera had great potential but it was entirely built around Lycomings next 4cyl engine which they abandoned forcing Pipistrel to redesign the airframe around a 6cyl engine costing them all of their performance gains. Now the plane is no different than any other, just a unique interior.

    Pressurised? Cirrus better watch out!

    • @codmott286
      @codmott286 3 года назад

      Cirrus is still much better. Larger roomier cabin, 2 doors, keypad input (good luck using touchscreen with turbulence in the pattern), proven and tested BRS system & better slow speed characteristics. Pressurization is overrated. By the time you reach altitude you'll only be there for a short while, plus you have limited cycles. Ultra long distance trips are probably better left for the airlines.

    • @Jolinator
      @Jolinator 3 года назад +5

      @@codmott286 Pressurization is far from overrated if you actually fly XC trips over terrain or weather being on a cannula sucks! LX7 Also has a BRS and is way faster than a cirrus they are not even in the same league. Hard to compared an experimental to a certified aircraft both have their pros and cons you have to know what your buying. Cirrus has nothing on the performance and range of this bird, this is not a plane for the "average pilot" and if flown in flight levels ATC expects you to operate like a professional.

    • @codmott286
      @codmott286 3 года назад

      @@Jolinator LX7 might have BRS but it's never been tested. They have no idea what will happen if you fire that thing. The whole airframe might break in half. Cirrus pioneered BRS in civil aviation and have tested it thoroughly with many donor ships plus all of the real world tests. It's proven and they know exactly how the aircraft will respond to it.
      LX7 is faster, cant deny that, however it's not as enjoyable to fly. The back seat is too cramped for adults so it's really just a 2 seater for you and your wife. With one gull wing door it's difficult to get in and out, and even for the front passengers it's still cramped. You will be sitting shoulder to shoulder for the entire ride. Visibility is worse, and of course lancair's legacy for horrible handling characteristics.
      LX7 claims to have addressed this a little but it certainly does not feel as refined as a cirrus. Ultimately the Cirrus is just the more enjoyable plane to fly.

    • @superchargedpetrolhead
      @superchargedpetrolhead 3 года назад +2

      @@codmott286 I think it is the same company that supplies parachutes to both the cirrus and lancair and they do independent testing on each airframe to produce parachutes for that specific airplane. You can't just throw a cirrus parachute in a Cessna, they are engineered and developed for each specifically after a lot of testing.
      Both are wonderful airplanes and each have their own pros and cons.

    • @codmott286
      @codmott286 3 года назад

    Sad he chose a piston engine. They make them with a turbine.

    • @ParadigmUnkn0wn
      @ParadigmUnkn0wn 2 года назад

      On a plane that probably came with north of a million dollar pricetag (one pistol LX7 is on market for $950k right now) I'm also confused since another $100k for an engine seems like a drop in the bucket at that point.

    • @speedomars3869
      @speedomars3869 2 года назад

      @@ParadigmUnkn0wn The turbine version is about $1.1m dependent on the cost of the donor Lancair IVP and the cost of the "used" Pratt engine. It could be a little lower if a good deal is found for either.

    • @kennethwolf392
      @kennethwolf392 2 года назад +2

      @@ParadigmUnkn0wn got the piston for two reasons. 1) much greater range and I fly long distances routinely and the turboprop would frequently require a fuel stop. 2) I have a basic med ticket snd am limited to 17500 feet snd a turboprop doesn’t run efficiently down that low. I’m happy with my long range bird. Recently flew it 2150 nm non stop from Redmond Oregon to Jacksonville Fl. That was fun! Can’t do that in a turbine with roughly twice the fuel burn!
