    To me as a kid the Beechcraft Starship was the spaceship. Such a beautiful airplane that didn’t get enough love and attention. It’s very sad that there are only a few left.
    This a beautifully built Velocity. I’d prefer it with an LS engine though. But that interior is on point.

    Back when I was getting my Private, Scott (actually Dwayne) Swing were part owners of the airport I was learning at, Phillipsburg, 3I7. Scott was building Velocity's upstairs in the shop all by hand, with these big fiberglass strand weaving machines and stacks of Styrofoam. He invented the retractable gear up there, and I was lucky enough to help a couple times. We molded a hand grip out of foam that fit my hand- I think he actually used it on the airplane he was building. In fact, and Scott probably doesn't remember this, he was trying to figure out a better cooling duct for the nose and I helped come up with the NACA duct you see on the airplane today, which still doesn't work very well.... lol Scott is one of the friendliest people you will ever meet in your life. I'm so glad they decided to purchase Velocity and turn it into the company that it is today. Great video. I can't wait to see your build videos of the turbine twin I'm sure you are getting ready to start on. Tell Scott that he needs to pressurize it.... lol

    I knew a guy with a Velocity RG, N52BZ. It was an amazing plane. He told me the plane is so slick it won’t slow down, even with power at idle, so the rudders are designed so that if you push both pedals both deflect to act as an air brake.

    • @EatPezzzz
      @EatPezzzz 2 года назад +1

      It's not that they won't slow down, it's just you have to pull much more throttle than you would expect. I had a new owner ask me how I slow my Long EZ down and I said, "Plan way ahead. On my approach here, I was 10 miles out, at 2000' doing 200mph and at that point I knew I was going too fast. I pulled the power to idle and it took me 10 miles to loose 110mph (granted in a shallow decent) because I cross the numbers at 90."

    • @es330td
      @es330td 2 года назад +2

      @@EatPezzzz Wow. I did my flight training in a 172M that would not glide. I had to carry power almost to the threshold sometimes. There were airports at which I could easily land on a displaced threshold thanks to my steep glideslope, even at 500 fpm descent were I so inclined. If I cut power ten miles out at traffic pattern altitude I’d land about 9.5 miles short.

    The main advantage of the canard is actually to replace the downward aerodynamic force of a conventional horizontal stabilizer at the rear of the plane with lift at the front of the plane. Planes are already fighting against gravity, so why add more downward force? The canard is more efficient and makes perfect sense. I also think they look pretty cool :)

  • @scott_maclean
    @scott_maclean 2 года назад +32

    An advantage you didn't mention: a conventional airplane within normal C/G, the horizontal stabilator actually creates downforce - so negative lift, that the main wing has to overcome by creating more lift. Lift = drag, so this setup creates more drag (and is why, when you unload the horizontal stab by loading to aft C/G, your airplane flies faster). On the Velocity, the main wing AND the canard both produce lift, so less overall lift required for the same weight, less lift = less drag = more speed for less fuel burn.
    A few disadvantages: you need a lot more runway, both for takeoff and landing. The canard requires higher speeds for both - this is definitely not a STOL aircraft, so that can limit you to larger (paved) runways. Unimproved strips are also a no-go, as your main gear can throw debris up into your prop. Also, an accidental over-rotation means a prop strike, which can really ruin your day.

I love the speed and fuel burn. Love the way it seems to stall. Love the way people talk about it after having their eye on it for years then getting to fly it. Sounds like a dream. Mooney owners said once I flew in one I would never go back, I only got to fly back seat but it made me think the Mooney was not really comfortable for 4 people either. Not sure but this looks like a dream - also seem to be affordable compared to anything in the same speed, size, or distance class! Love it!

    I think Burt Rutan's Long EZ's were the first space ships. I'm sure Burt is happy that his design is still living today in the Velocity. Weren't there some salling issues in Las Vegas in 1992? I'm not clear if Danny or the Scott couple owned the Velocity at that time. I do know that soon after the stalling problem was fixed. Thank God it was fixed as it's such a beautiful aircraft. I believe one disadvantage is that in an engine out scenario, you have no engine in front of you to help with (clearing the way). Its nice to have that big heavy hunk of metal in front of you. Now, this is more of an rear-engine/front-engine discussion rather than a traditional vs canard aircraft but most canards are rear engine aircraft, so it applies, I believe...

      Funny you mention Miami Vice, as Velocity's founder is Danny Maher who built Speedboats in the Miami Area during the late 70's early 80's. Apparently things must have gotten a little "hot" with his "customers" as he sold the boat building business and moved to Sebastian. Velocity was founded in 1984 - yes, coming up on 40 years of existence, you can't say that about too many kit builders. The Swings, of course, have taken Velocity to the next levels.

    That is a beautiful airplane for sure. I would definitely love to see the twin turbine version. That seems like it would be very cool to fly. But Kim would look real good flying one of these singles too. Maybe you can get her one for Christmas.

    Disadvantages: Take off distance- canard must create enough lift to lift the nose off the ground and bring the wing to a high angle of attack and since the canard must stall before the wing it limits CLmax. Flaps and other high lift devices are not practical for this design (get used to shallow approaches). Deep stall - icing, rain or other mods to the canard air flow can cause an unrecoverable stall (good design have reduced this risk). Aft C.G and canard down wash leads to poor wing disruption

    That propeller, twists the canards.

    The first “space ship” was Rutans VariEze in 1975.

    The Velocity came out long after the Rutan Veri eze which was got the Cozy and Velocity people looking at the canard and swept eing design.
    Go snag a ride in a Veri eze and get the most raw canard flying experience. Rutan designed the Veri Eze to win x country enduro efficiency races which were popular coming out of the 1970’s oil embargo. In 1983 my grandfather and I built a veri eze. First flight was 1986. The Long Eze was created for more luggage ie c country luxury ability like electric starter on the engine. The Veri Eze was raw maximum performance minimal weight, we hand propped it to start it! 190 knot cruise was pretty typical of a straight well built Veri Eze, at 4gph burn rate😳. Rutan crushed the x country efficiency races in the Veri eze. After that Rutan was pretty much the wizard of modern aircraft design.

    Many thanks for all infos !!! Could you confirm that the canard system does not have negative portance of the traditional rear horizontal stabilizer which means that all square feet of the wings & canards are working together to keep the plane flying ??? Thanks again

    That is my next kit!! Oh, also with an LS-3 Aviated 300hp engine. 😁 Great video, it’s helping me sell this to my wife…🤣😂 And I also prefer center sticks.

      Nice choice, but I hear there are new Turbine engines coming out that might work.
      Higher altitudes and lower fuel burn with greater availability of lower priced Jet A fuel vs Avgas.

    Excellent airplane!
    My only concern is the the takeoff/landing distance are too long.
    The landing speed is also too high.
