Luckily I had some real encounters with God and knew what scripture said about him, so I continued to push to see who God is, and what he showed me through the Old Testament was truly incredible. DW: Many years ago - I asked the Lord to help me understand what was going on in Calvinism.
He directed my mind to scrutinize Calvinist language as a way of understanding the human response to the doctrine.
The more I scrutinized Calvinist language - the more I discovered it is a language designed to mislead.
It is the language someone speaks to himself when he is lying to himself.
There is a form of dishonesty known as "ALTRUISTIC DISHONESTY"
ALTRUISTIC dishonesty is designed to protect a "TARGET". People who tell lies for the sake of a TARGET report they would have felt worse if they told the truth - because they would be revealing things about the TARGET they do not want people to see.
This form of dishonesty is integral within Calvinism and is considered a form of religious piety.
So "Pious Dishonesty" is an integral part of Calvinist practice.
Telling lies of omission is an integral part of Calvinist practice.
Painting false pictures of the doctrine is an integral part of Calvinist practice.
I am convinced - if one scrutinizes Calvinist language - one will discover all of this.

This is interesting because for me as a teenager I was on the fence. My dad was pretty much a Calvinist and he argued against the Arminian position but not in an arrogant forceful way. At college it was Romans 9 that convinced me that Calvinism was absolutely true and therefore I stuck my stake in the ground with my church. It was a few years later that Romans 9 convinced me that calvinism was a lie, because I started to cross reference. But it was Jer 18 that undid my calvinism, like it was the one knot when undone everything unravelled. It is painful to go through that transition because Calvinism is not a doctrine but a theological grid through which you see everything and therefore everything needs to be re-examined.

Yes, faith alone in Christ alone is right, but that faith will lead you to follow Jesus in your life. The rest of calvinism or arminianism is almost irrelevant, what's relevant is do you HEAR Jesus in Scripture and do you obey Him? Matthew 7: 24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

But I certainly was not implying that leaving Calvinism makes you right with God. These gentlemen are evidence of that. They have rejected the gospel in their rejection of Calvinism.

Any teaching that constantly pushes the idea that believers are “sinners” will ultimately lead to this strange ideology, especially if the teacher is Calvinistic. First of all, believers are not considered “sinners” and Paul never once refers to any of his hearers as “sinner”. The terms Paul uses are “Child of God”, “Joint Heir with Christ”, “Saints”, “Sanctified”, “Redeemed”, “Light in the Lord”, and so many wonderful others. But from a Calvinistic perspective God not only hates SIN but also hates the SINNER and hates ALL SINNERS, so logically it follows that God hates believers, and your pastor was being consistent in this.
But God does NOT HATE SINNERS. He doesn’t. Not at all. God LOVES sinners, but in a particular way.
This is the way God loved the world of sinners/unbelievers/those under the dominion of Sin… He freely gave His only Son so that these sinners could m, by faith, be reconciled to Father.
God loves His own children, those who have faith in Jesus, in a different way than the way He loved the world. … yet God never hated the world, instead He would reject those who reject His Son. And it is not by God’s decree that they would never believe, but rather by His great mercy and patience that He, in His sovereignty would call to them day and night.

The end of the portion is what happened to my ex-husband who recently divorced me. He just completely walked away from the faith because his actions didn't match up with following Christ and just gave up. He was what I called a "fruit checker", always equating salvation with if you were producing fruit rather than relying on if what God said was true about Christ's work on our behalf. Also he thought that the Holy Spirit would magically just make our marriage better because we were Christians without doing any work on our end. We were both Calvinist the whole time we were married and when we were confronted with what the bible actually said (last June for me), I went one way and found joy in God's provision, and he just left completely, divorced me, and is now dating a non-believer he met at work. He also walked away from church altogether so he has no Christians around him to call him out on his rebellion. My heart hurts for him every day, but more than the marriage falling apart, I'm terrified how close he was to finding peace and yet will never have it without Christ.
Ironically after the divorce, he said he actually can see why I believe Leighton and Mike Winger's interpretation, and I said yeah it's actually a decision to follow Christ, not just your mysterious preselection before the foundation of the world. I think with Calvinism, you can never know if you were truly chosen and I think that causes a lot of people to focus on their outer fruit works and judge others based on if they're serving enough at church and not checking if they're spiritually dead. It gets really exhausting and that was also why he has all this anger at church as well.

He is trusting in his works rather than on Christ for his salvation. That's the issue with most Calvinists--they are not saved, do not have the Holy Spirit, and trust in their intellectual knowledge and their own works rather than on Christ. It is works-based salvation, and it leads people straight to hell by keeping them in the captivity of false religion. There are demons at work in Calvinism--always has been. It's why it is a doctrine of demons. It opens the door for religious pride demons to come in masquerading as a counterfeit holy spirit to keep those people in darkness. If someone is coming to faith and get deceived into Calvinism or any other erroneous discipleship, they don't get saved and born again. It's like a breached birth. Or they are standing in front of the door to God's grace but are content to peak through the keyhole and then speculate and imagine what must be on the other side without ever opening the door thus creating a false god of their own conception--idolatry.

Why is Jesus so distant? Does he really love me? It was really scary when I started following the Bible Project and listening to Leighton Flowers and Mike Winger about the context of the old testament how defensive he got when I started reading it because he thought I was turning to the law for salvation. I was just trying to learn who God is, and am I sure I have the right God? Something is not matching up. Pastor Flowers, I first want to thank you for sharing your personal testimony as a former Calvinist, and for creating this channel.
I believe you have genuine hope and love for all people to be able to come into a Loving, True, and Salvific relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in every video you create.
Years ago, I considered Calvinism after I was saved. I love the way they preach, right from scripture, line by line. But, unfortunately finding a non-Calvinistic or non-reformed church that has such good expository preaching is almost impossible these days.
I know I'm "Saved by Grace through Faith. And this is not of ourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, so that no man may boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9)
I prayed to God daily to test and approve the claims of Calvinism as I researched it. Thankfully, the very first channel I found was yours, then followed by Mike Winger. I watched almost every video on your channel, some more that 2 or 3 times. Ultimately, in my personal opinion, God chose to lead me to your channel to help guide me in my walk. So I give Jesus Christ all my love, honor, glory, and worship and I still thank Him for brothers in Christ, like you!
Please don't ever give up my friend! Your teaching is changing minds and leading people to what I believe is the True Freedom Christ offers to all sinners who will humble themselves before God, accept that we are all sinners in need of a Savior, and accept His Free Gift, and be Truly Born Again!
I pray God will continue to bless people, through your ministry. Which I find to be a very kind and loving approach to this very difficult, and sometimes confusing topic.
I have several questions, but I think this post is already the length of a "Novella." So again I say thank you and I will continue to pray for you and your ministry, as I believe in this current "climate" in our country, people are too quick to judge what they don't or won't even try to understand.
    Your Brother in Christ Jesus,
    Daniel E. Harvey

DW: That is a common burden all Calvinist pastors have to deal with. In Calvinism - it is historically called the "DREADED FALSE HOPE".
In Calvinism - we have a divine potter of Romans 9 who creates the MANY specifically as vessels of wrath fitted for destruction.
In Calvinism - a large percentage of the body of believers are specifically created as CHAFF.
Calvin's god gives the CHAFF believer a FALSE SENSE of salvation.
All of the promises within scripture are classified as the ENUNCIATED will of god - which in many cases is the exact opposite of the SECRET will of god.
So the promises within scripture to the believer - for any Calvinist - can function as divine condemnation for that Calvinist.
If he is created as CHAFF - then he will not be granted discernment about it.
So every Calvinist has a high probability of being created for eternal torment for his good pleasure.
The way most Calvinists deal with the emotional burden of that - is denial.

It is the foundational core of Calvinism (aka the doctrine of decrees) which only exists within Calvinism - that you are taking issue with.

      1) Calvinism's doctrine of decrees:
      John Calvin

The creatures…are so governed by the secret counsel of God, that *NOTHING HAPPENS* but what he has knowingly and willingly decreed. (Institutes 1. 16. 3)

      3) Which Calvin concludes as follows:
      John Calvin
      -quote
Some are pre-ordained to eternal life, others to eternal damnation, and accordingly as *EACH HAS BEEN CREATED* for one of these ends, we [Calvinists] say he has been predestined to life or death.(Institutes 3.21.5)
      4) Thus Calvinism has a divine potter of Romans 9 - who creates the MANY specifically for eternal torment in a lake of fire for his good pleasure.
      John Calvin
      -quote
by the eternal good pleasure of god, though the reasons do not appear, then they are *NOT FOUND* but *MADE* worthy of destruction. (Concerning the eternal predestination of god)
      5) In Calvinism - per the doctrine of decrees - WHATSOEVER perceptions come to pass within the human brain - were established and FIXED by divine decree - and cannot be other than what they were decreed to be.
Thus - Whatsoever FALSE PERCEPTIONS of election/Salvation exist within the minds of Calvinists - exist because that is exactly what was decreed - and cannot be otherwise.
      6) And that is why we have the component of the divine deception of the believer in Calvinism.
      John Calvin
      -quote
the Lord........ instills into their minds such *A SENSE* .....as can be felt *WITHOUT* the Spirit of adoption. (Institutes 1. 2. 11)
      John Calvin
      -quote
he *ILLUMINES ONLY FOR A TIME* to partake of it; then he....strikes them with even greater blindness (Institutes 3.24.8)
In Calvinism - the WHEAT are created to be WHEAT and the CHAFF are created to be CHAFF.
The CHAFF are designed so as to be indistinguishable from the WHEAT.
      As Calvin says it -
      -quote
A few grains of wheat covered by a multitude of chaff.(Institutes 4.1.4)
Each CHAFF believer - determined at the foundation of the world by a divine potter.

I have had a discussion with him on this but I am not a theologian nor can I use the theological speak with him-I didn’t try to use a bunch a proof text for provisionism and when I mentioned this to him in our discussion he told me that he had heard them all anyway. He also told me that when he came to grips with this entire doctrine that he felt like he had been born again all over again. He also mentioned from the pulpit -he is going thru the book of Romans-that it humbled him so greatly when he realized that he was one of God’s chosen-. I have been in this church for 43 years-thru thick and thin-and there has been much and I have many wonderful friends but I can see how he is beginning to influence our Board. I know their are others who are are deep into Calvinism that are there but it has caused me to not want to go. I like him as a person-and the church seems to be growing but my heart hurts and I don’t know what to do-i feel like this is an issue that Satan might be using in these last days to just cause more strife in our churches.

But just wait and watch. If you watch of it - you are guaranteed to observe him denying his doctrine within inferential language. All Calvinists follow that pattern.

      @@habakkuk2510 DW Hello Habakkuk
There is a pattern that is well known concerning belief systems which are highly radical.
That pattern is called *AS-IF* thinking
Take for example - the man who believes in Solipsism.
What happens if during his intimate moments with his wife - he treats her as a figment of his imagination - which is what his belief system stipulates. Will there be consequences for him doing that?
What happens if he treats his boss or his supervisor as a figment of his imagination.
He knows there will be consequences which will be too much for him to bear.
So he goes about his office *AS-IF* his belief system is FALSE. He treats people *AS-IF* they are real.
Calvinism is similarly a radical belief system based on Determinism.
      Sean Carroll (Theoretical physicist Determinist)
      -quote
Every person in the world, no matter how anti-free-will they are, talks about people *AS-IF* they make decisions.
      Stephen Hawking - Determinist

I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined and that we can do nothing to change it look before they cross the street. (Black Holes, Baby Universes and Other Essays)
      William Lane Craig
      -quote
Nobody can live *AS-IF* all that he thinks and does is determined by causes outside of himself. Every determinist recognizes he has to act *AS-IF* he has option(S) to weigh, and can decide on what course of action to take….. (Determinism is unlivable)
      John Calvin
      -quote
“Hence as to future time, because the issue of all things is hidden from us, each ought to so to apply himself to his office, *AS-IF* nothing were determined about any part.” (Concerning the eternal predestination of god)
So you see - the Calvinist is forced to assert his doctrine as TRUE - while treating his doctrine *AS-IF* it is FALSE in order to retain a sense of human normalcy - and to be congruent with scripture.
That is why Calvinist language is a language of DOUBLE-SPEAK

This breaks my heart. We are friends with a couple who married young. Both from Christian homes. But he had become a pushy (cage stage) Calvinist. Eventually she said she wasn’t a Christian anymore. She couldn’t believe in a God portrayed in that manner. It’s been 4 years, but thankfully, these last 2 years she started reading the Bible again for herself and examining her faith and the gospel. I see God slowly bringing her back in. And her husband, having gone through that pain of losing his wife, in a sense, and not knowing what to do, has re-examined his approach. I think seeing that change has helped her and seeing from others that Calvinism isn’t the only way. But it was hard seeing him in that state and not knowing what was going to happen. And seeing this beautiful girl who truly loved the Lord walk away. I pray for healing and complete restoration.

Thank you for this great presentation. I had some "fights" with friends who have a Calvinistic view of God/salvation. I did not possess all the theological arguments presented in this video, but based on my Bible reading and my personal knowledge of God (that He is truly loving and wants anyone to be saved, and paid the price for all to be saved, not only for the "elected"), I refused to embrace the Calvinistic view. I simply knew that if God is love and wants us to love Him (and not just obey Him by duty), then it has to be free will, because love turns on free will.
My own life experience before coming to know Christ (I was an atheist, then a yoga practitioner) convinced me that free will is real and I cannot escape it, nor the moral responsibility attached to it. My main question back then when I was an atheist was: "if evolution explains everything and life ends at death, then why do I have free will ?" I just kept asking questions like that until I've heard the gospel. Then everything started to make sense.
This is a great ministry. God bless you and help you continue to lovingly present and defend the real character of God. He really deserves all the glory for who He is and what He has done for our salvation.

DW: Very nice post! Consider however - the TULIP was produced about 100 years after Calvin's institutes and at that time Calvin was long gone.
At that time - the only primary writings about doctrine were within writings made by Calvin himself.
At that time the Bible was more readily available to the common people and they had the opportunity to compare scripture to John Calvin's writing - in which he did not flinch at painting a picture of divine malevolence for mankind.
It would be understandable for reformed thinkers at that time to want to distance Calvinism from Calvin's writings because of the IN YOUR FACE representations of divine malevolence within Calvin's writings.
So consider the possibility that the TULIP which was published in the form of a marketing booklet - was created as a strategy to hide DARK aspects of the doctrine which Calvin refused to hide.
When you examine the TULIP - what you will find is - the doctrine of decrees is totally absent from it.
The TULIP was actually created to hide the underlying doctrine - and to make Calvinism appear to be a more benevolent belief system than it really is.
      Blessings!

@@thomasdaniel22 DW: Actually - Provisionism simply follows the concept of divine provision. And the concept of divine provision is not a novelty to any Bible reader.
However - using the concept of divine provision as a LABEL for a theological position is certainly new.
Calvinism - for example - is also a LABEL.
But the Calvinist is certainly not going to say the concepts which define Calvinism are a novelty which appears in the 1500's
The foundational core - of Calvinism - is EXHAUSTIVE DIVINE DETERMINISM (EDD) as enunciated within the doctrine of decrees.
Calvinists will insist the doctrine of decrees is *INFERRED* or *ASSUMED* within the text of scripture - and is therefore not a novelty.

I like this video and it gave me a better understanding as to why Calvinism comes under such scrutiny. I am a believer and follow er of Christ, but I only now encountering these different theological positions as I pursue and study the scriptures. I am glad for this, because I believe I can adopt an objective view of the commentaries without trying to defend a particular doctrinal stance over another. I am able to pick "good" from "bad", agree or disagree, change my view etc etc by examining the scriptures through a "neutral" lens. Of course I have biases, as we all do, but I'm not beholden to One particular viewpoint.
That said, I just wanted to add to your comments regarding deconversion and the connection made to moral failings. While I can agree with you that it may be a root cause. You neglect to consider the converse situation, that is a believer may be morally upstanding and diligent in the spiritual discipline, but their circumstances fail to line up with their beliefs and so they question and change their beliefs (deconvert). Both sides presents the same challenge: How do I believe this God (YHWH) when what I'm taught to believe does not line up with the scriptures actually present. In this I see God's sovereignty, He uses our circumstances to reveal Himself regardless of the doctrinal system we can come up with to explain who this God is and what we should believe about Him. Prov 25: It is the Glory of God to conceal a thing, and it is the HONOUR of kings to search them out.

I found Robin Parry's book a good read. But in the end I remained unconvinced.
Not that he didn't have some good arguments.
There are several scriptures in the Pauline corpus that lean towards universalism. That's where Parry was the most convincing.
But his argumentation from Revelation was not. I felt he was grasping at straws.
Although I would love to be a universalist (who wouldn't!), I'm not convinced the scriptures allow for it.
Parry's fault is that he's too philosophical and speculative with his reading of the biblical texts. That was also Origen's weakness.
So, in the end, I still believe Jesus and the biblical authors teach there is a hell, even if I don't have it fully worked out.

@@anthonym.7653 I'm a calvinist so let me explain how a calvinist views salvation. First of all, mankind is born in total inability to please God, born corrupted by sin and without the ability to even choose the things of God. On the basis of Christ's sacrifice on the cross and resurrection, God gives spiritual birth to whomever He chooses to, this is called divine election. So an unbeliever finds himself hearing the gospel and believing, the only reason he can even hear and believe it is because God gave them spiritual birth (the spiritually dead cannot hear nor believe the gospel, they don't have that ability). So then they believe and choose Jesus, but lets remember the order, first God gives them spiritual birth, then they hear and believe. Spiritual birth is 100% the work of God, it is God giving you a new heart that loves God and others, your original heart from birth is corrupted by sin and incapable of doing anything holy. Ezekiel has the best description of spiritual birth in the Old Testament, Ezekiel 36: 26 "And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules."
So, in conclusion, you don't choose Jesus, He chooses you first, then you can say you choose Him, but the only reason you do is because you're among the elect and He gave you spiritual birth. Salvation, faith in Jesus, even repentance, all these are GIFTS from God adn they don't come from your sin nature (the flesh). I hope this helps. No you cannot loose your salvation because it does not depend on you to begin with, it is Jesus who saves you and keeps you in the faith gifted to you. Yes, saved ones will do good works naturally out of the new heart they received...just like dogs bark and cats meaw, children of God do good works, its natural to them.

Tyler's God seems to be determinism. ☹️ Sad to see him leave the faith before he leaves determinism. I'd rather him be a wrong calvinist than a reprobate.

So a couple of Calvinists come to see Calvinism the way that most Christians in the world see it, and instead of having the humility to admit that maybe they were wrong about their interpretation of Scripture, they're adamant that they are right, and that therefore God must be evil, and/or Christianity must be false.
Meanwhile, a great many other Calvinists will continue to boast* of how they are the humble ones, and that those who believe that God loves everyone, and sent His Son to die for all of mankind, are man-centered and full of pride.
*Admittedly not _all_ Calvinists do this, but the vast majority I have encountered/engaged with have this kind of an attitude.

I keep wondering how did we get to this point where Calvinistic reformed theology has become the face of evanghelical churches in USA?
How did we manage to get to this point?
As a protestant I hate how the catholic and orthodox churches deviated from the New Testament teachings, but how come the evanghelical churches get down the Calvinistic path?

I think ultimately Calvinism resurged into the vacuum left by non-Calvinist churches getting hung up on "church growth" and cash flow. Calvinists have also been very savvy in flooding the internet and in promoting Crossway for example (which does put out some very good resources, btw) and the ESV translation (which isn't my favorite, but is a very good literalized and de-liberaled version of the RSV). It's an unusual Reformed pastor who doesn't use the ESV.

Disclaimer: Tyler if you are reading this, I am not intending to unfairly criticize you, this is an honest opinion I hold, and I hope the best for you!
Having watched many of Tyler's debates and discussions with non-Calvinists and atheists over the years, one thing that was always very off-putting was the ever-increasing lack of humility in his discussions. Every claim he ever makes (still does as seen in this video) is so matter of fact and overly confident, it is like he was trying to also convince himself the whole time, overcompensating as they call it. I never took him to be an honest or fair interlocutor. His heart always seemed to lie merely in the polemics and debate culture in general. He never came off as a person genuinely interested in defending Christ or bringing people to know Him. I understand that psychologizing people can be a fool's errand and I acknowledge these are my own personal takeaways and should be taken with a grain of salt. If I am wrong, I apologize to Tyler for wrongly criticizing him. If I am right, I hope Tyler would thoughtfully and humbly consider this and perhaps consider if he fell away as a result of making an idol out of debating and his own intellectual prowess. Or even challenge himself to see whether he was ever a Christian at all and rather just liked the debate culture and found apologetics as a good avenue to do so. If either of those is even possible, I would challenge Tyler to seek Christ in a more holistic and organic way, laying aside much of what he thinks he knows. To others, CS Lewis talked about the dangers of apologetics, and I think rightfully so. Maybe some are more cut out for it than others but from my personal experience, I've not seen apologetics bear much fruit in my own life nor in those I was trying to reach. Oftentimes, during self-reflection, I realized my motivation for apologetics was more driven by my flesh than it was by the Spirit. I'm not saying this will be true for everyone, rather it is simply just something I would caution anyone heavily into apologetics to consider. This can be true for theology nerds as well. Make sure the motivation for what you are doing is to honor Christ.
