you can use paint thinner and wait a while and it just comes off and u peel gently, the paint thinner works really well when removing the spider dont, be afraid of wetting the spider spray thiner around the spider alot , then wait about 5 minutes and the glue should be soft then use a flat head to get under it and remove it
this is how I do it as well....re-wrapping a coil with the original parts intact....handmade coils are super strong, last longer than factory made coils IMHO...all my handmade coils hold up really really well too...awesome vid BTW :D
very awesome video indeed! and even more awesome is that you're answering questions people are asking! Mad props for not being a jerk like some other online people!
yep you are right about bottle and yes i do it by hand, it`s only 100-200 winds per coil. Old glue comes off pretty easy, glue debonder does a good job as well
thanks man. Never recoiled a JL w3v model, hope it`s not using an aluminium wire like w7 etc... Biggest reason for burning coils is using too weak amps which on the heavy loads start clipping and signal is distorted. That`s why i always recommend to use 30-50% more powerful amps then subs. Like myself using ~7kw rms amp on a 4kw subs. With the right electric supply can play for ages on a full blast without any issues
good job mate! you just need to keep in mind that different cones have different parameters like weight etc...That means your voice coil can be under pressure or not so efficient, but it`s better to have one working instead 2 dead ones:)
@seamokatinas thank you for helping me understand. That rumor about Audiobahn using fake voice coils in their DVC subs kind of hurts my feelings to hear that about a decent company
if it`s stuck don`t force to move cone up and down cos you`ll make even more damage...Just take it apart as gently as you can. As for the wire you need to measure old-burn`t one, every sub uses different, could be 22awg,24awg,26awg etc...
yeah, i had everything of that in mind here :) the motor i use in my project is very strong and thats why that speaker broke in the first place, i am very happy with the result and how the speaker sounds and i doubt it will break again, in my latest video i play with that speaker in my room and got up to allmost 130decibels :D the QTS value sounds low and VAS medium. i simply love it XD thanks for watching too!
yes apply heat resistant adhesive after each layer. You can use same type glue for spider and cone. Where you start winding will be your +, where finish -
few reasons...1. wanted to show people that it`s possible to bring pretty much any speaker back to life 2. sometimes recones not available 3. price P.S just showing speakers can be useful before you throw them out:)
Also, the sub has a VERY slight rattle to it, and if you pressing the top of the sub just the slightest bit uneven, it sort of grinds. On my other subs I can push on them however and it is smooth as glass
excellent work... I know that a sub is relatively simple in design.. I must re coil my JL w3v3 Any tips or advice? I hate to throw it away its only like 3 years old... also what is usually responsible for the out of limits condition on the coil?
:) usually blown subs doesn`t work at all:) get a multimeter and try to measure resistance across + and - terminals. If you not getting any numbers even when moving cone then it`s definitely blown
This video is a life saver!! you think there is hop for a seized sub ? I just drove all the way back home to California from South Dakota where i'm going to school just to get my subs. Come to find out one of my 12" solar baric kickers are seized. do you think there is hope to bring it back to life, and if so any tips on what kind of wire i should use for the recoil ?
wow thats amazing, u got mad skillz dude. i got a blown jl 12w1 and my coil is all tangles up inside the magnet, i wanna do exactly wat u did here, the only problem is i cant get it apart withouth damaging it, did u use anything special to loosen up the glue or did u just carefully rip it up? and how did u get the spider off too?
Cool, wondering if I should try it on a blown sub I got left with. Couple of questions: 1. How do you determine length of wire needed for rewind? 2. Is the wire glued when you rewind it? 3. What does the multitester 3.6 measure indicate, is that ohms? 4. For a dual voice coil, does the one wire go over the other or side by side? OK, couple more than a couple questions! Thanks.
tape won`t work:) use contact cement for this job, apply it in a very thin layer. Apply the adhesive to both sides of the surround. If you apply the adhesive properly and get the surround back together as it should be, the speaker will be as good as new.
hi there good job just wanted to know how you remove the surround? did you warm it up or somthing? i have a focal 165 k2 power and finding it hard to remove the surround without damage
what kind of wire did u use...did u glue every row of wire or just when u got done with one...look at threads and this is the only thing i found ..enamelled copper wire....can u jst use one kind of glue for everything wire..spider and foam? thank you...
you will need a 12-14v power supply, car amplifier and a lead that would have one end with headphone jack (connect to laptop) another end RCA (goes to amplifier). If you have home amplifier that is capable to handle 2-4 ohms will be less hassle cos no separate power supply needed...
How can I regulate the wats W? to make a stronger speaker, and more difficult to burn? should i use a thicker coil, or more windings? thanks, for the great vid :)
if parts start to come apart then your voice coil not sitting straight on the magnet, that`s causing voice coil to rub on the side of the magnet and you hear grind noise.
if the spider is ok then it`s a bit strange, in any way you will have to remove spider with cone to investigate what`s causing the problem, 90% it will be a voice coil
I have a pair of guitar speakers that are'nt made anymore, the one speaker has a few small tears on the surround the other was mutilated but the spider was intact and the coil was still a bright copper color, can the old coils be salvaged for reconing?
also man jst got done taking it apart..im a bit confused as to which wire is going to be red and the other black..positvie & negative?? how do i find out which is which //thanx a lot man...
i have a question...i have dual 12s in my house and only one of the woofers make a rattling sound when i turn it up i was thinking it was the voice coil but im not really sure..i tried pushing the cone up and down with no power but when i do there is no rattling it only rattles when there is power going to it
hello, I"m trying to fix an old Kicker L7 12" The voice coil is fine, it's just the tinsel lead wires that were the problem, would like to know how to get the glue off of the cone and voice coil wires, so that I can change them for new ones.
I think my two 12dvc r blown, an there only a couple of months old, an i hate to throw them away. Where can i buy the wire for the coils, an wat type of glue do i use
you can use paint thinner and wait a while and it just comes off and u peel gently, the paint thinner works really well when removing the spider dont, be afraid of wetting the spider spray thiner around the spider alot , then wait about 5 minutes and the glue should be soft then use a flat head to get under it and remove it

Nice work. Very clean and professional.

This is not *re* coning it´s re *winding* ....Very cool!
Thanx for sharing!

thanks man! usually they come off easy enough, if not u can use white-spirit or glue debonder
good job mate! you just need to keep in mind that different cones have different parameters like weight etc...That means your voice coil can be under pressure or not so efficient, but it`s better to have one working instead 2 dead ones:)
thanks bro! most of the time nothing wrong with the coil formers so yes i re-use them
you not the only one who put them in a bin:) you would need to look for an enamelled copper wire, should find in most electrical shops
@seamokatinas
thank you for helping me understand. That rumor about Audiobahn using fake voice coils in their DVC subs kind of hurts my feelings to hear that about a decent company

Wouldn't it have been better if this guy would have talked about how to recone the speaker in the tutorial instead of playing this annoying ass music?
exactly lol

very impressed mate, great job. i love that you did it perfect too.
you just gave me hope on fixing my orion xtr
excellent work... I know that a sub is relatively simple in design.. I must re coil my JL w3v3 Any tips or advice? I hate to throw it away its only like 3 years old... also what is usually responsible for the out of limits condition on the coil?
Man, you know how many subs i threw out that you could've fixed? That's cool. Nice video.
How do you tell how long to make the new coil? Thanks and awesome video
:) usually blown subs doesn`t work at all:) get a multimeter and try to measure resistance across + and - terminals. If you not getting any numbers even when moving cone then it`s definitely blown
nice video man. how many truns and how many layers of wire did u put on the voice coil?
That's impressive I've never see anyone re-wynnd
This video is a life saver!! you think there is hop for a seized sub ? I just drove all the way back home to California from South Dakota where i'm going to school just to get my subs. Come to find out one of my 12" solar baric kickers are seized. do you think there is hope to bring it back to life, and if so any tips on what kind of wire i should use for the recoil ?
thanks, new voice coil should be exactly same lenght as old one
wow thats amazing, u got mad skillz dude. i got a blown jl 12w1 and my coil is all tangles up inside the magnet, i wanna do exactly wat u did here, the only problem is i cant get it apart withouth damaging it, did u use anything special to loosen up the glue or did u just carefully rip it up? and how did u get the spider off too?

honestly i don`t care what you think man. If you don`t like, don`t watch, simple as that. Thanks
no probs man, there will be always some idiots who say bad words about some products just cos they used them wrong and damaged
nice dude, I just want to know how did you do the voice coil part?? thx =)
you will need a 12-14v power supply, car amplifier and a lead that would have one end with headphone jack (connect to laptop) another end RCA (goes to amplifier). If you have home amplifier that is capable to handle 2-4 ohms will be less hassle cos no separate power supply needed...
exactly same as old (burnt) ones. Usually 2 layers each if it`s dual voice coil sub, and 4 layers if it`s single
you`ll need to use heat resistand adhesive, apply it after every enamelled copper wire layer
thanks, i`m using a NCH tone generator for the frequencys, but i`m sure there are lots of other programs
How can I regulate the wats W? to make a stronger speaker, and more difficult to burn? should i use a thicker coil, or more windings? thanks, for the great vid :)
What do you use to hold the coil together? Heat resistant glue or what?
connected to 12v power supply, price depends on how many Amps it can produce. This one is only a cheap one (some $40) cos gives only ~5A
sure it can. First thing you need to do is to check your sub terminals with multimeter to be sure 100% it`s not your amp.
How do you keep the wire on the coil in place, do you glue them on?
greetings
this one was totaly dead, but you will have to do the same cos your voice coil was fried and is loose inside. That`s where the noise coming from
hey can you tell me what you used to glue the coil together and how you glued it ?
never had this sub for repairs so don`t realy know, but usually screwdriver and a little bit heat works fine:)
if parts start to come apart then your voice coil not sitting straight on the magnet, that`s causing voice coil to rub on the side of the magnet and you hear grind noise.
if it`s a small crack then contact cement should do a job. Cone not that sensitive for a SQ, damaged surround would need a bit more accurate job
coils are same as on most subs, not the worst not the best assembly. Could be done more work on cooling
try to push sub cone up and down without any power on it if you still getting rattling sound then it needs new voice coil
just make sure you have the right size
if the spider is ok then it`s a bit strange, in any way you will have to remove spider with cone to investigate what`s causing the problem, 90% it will be a voice coil
coils can be reused, but you need to get new cones
thanks man, i`m doing my best:) lots of people just wasting money on recones so thought my video will give another option
you count the turns on the coil, and also measure the wire?
yeah bro lots and lots of patience:) any sine wave 20-60hz will do the job
So you wrap the new coil around the old one or strip the old one first?
Great! I hope I will one day try that.
um, yes there is. You don't want your shiny new coil rubbing on the magnet, or the inside of the former rubbing on the pole piece.
what glue did you use to glue the coil?
Amazing!
I have a pair of guitar speakers that are'nt made anymore, the one speaker has a few small tears on the surround the other was mutilated but the spider was intact and the coil was still a bright copper color, can the old coils be salvaged for reconing?
did oyu just add new copper on top of the burned one??? plz reply
is the wire 2 row for 1 coil or a single ??
I have a Memphis mojo 10" sub. M110D4 and the "spider" I guess you would call it, is detaching from the cone. Not completely but almost.
very good job man!! i was surprised how well you did!
btw whats the name of the song?
Howd you wrap it so tight i always had an issue with that
thanks mate, song name BLANK & JONES - The mistery
i more thing , i have a idmax dual 2 12 inch sub so when i recoil the first coil do i just coil the second one on top of the first ? thanks
also man jst got done taking it apart..im a bit confused as to which wire is going to be red and the other black..positvie & negative?? how do i find out which is which //thanx a lot man...
if it`s broken-solder and glue it to the cone, if it`s not broken just glue it
what did u use to power the amp?
How could I go about fixing this, or getting it repaired? And do you do repairs for other people? If so what are your prices? Thanks.
good job man , i try it now
What kind of wire do I use to fix my voice coil on my audiobahn just like the one in the video n what kind of glue
What kind of wire did you use?
usually they come off easy enough, use white-spirit or glue debonder. What do you mean ,,get the glue off of the voice coil wires,,?
anigaso que pegamento usas para pegar la bobina
where you put the second coil? over the first?
can i use wire in a small motor in rc car....
NICE WORK
i have a rockford fostgate t1 15'' u think it would be hard to do that to mine? nice vid big ups
very good sr...how can i do to get the audio (test frequencys) you use to test the subs.there is some link or some you can help me out please..
No heat resistand coil ?
how did you accomplish such a nice coil windage?
how do you wrap the coil like that?
U rewound But what did u use to keep the coil from coming unwound? Witch bottle? That was a great video. Thumbs up
OK, found it, big thanks. ;)
unwind burnt, wind new fresh one
i have a question...i have dual 12s in my house and only one of the woofers make a rattling sound when i turn it up i was thinking it was the voice coil but im not really sure..i tried pushing the cone up and down with no power but when i do there is no rattling it only rattles when there is power going to it
How do you get the coil off though?
how would you know how many layers of wires to put??
hello, I"m trying to fix an old Kicker L7 12" The voice coil is fine, it's just the tinsel lead wires that were the problem, would like to know how to get the glue off of the cone and voice coil wires, so that I can change them for new ones.

hi, answer is in a previous posts. Yes hair dryer sometimes helps...
