I plan on keeping this one stock I promise
Would be interesting to see what can be done with them. Or a common man amazon lift lol... A little spice. But not bat shit crazy
When you replace the turbo, install a hx35, you'll be amazed at how much more power it feels like it has.
Sure you will.
Yeah ok earl 👌
Please don’t
Vacuum pumps and boost solenoids are also known to go bad, I’ve replaced them on all my 6.5 diesels
Good thing you were at church that Sunday, saved it from being scrapped 😎
lol : no one is coming to save you, people go to church to play make believe
Well I believe people who repent and truly mean it are saved. And with everything going on in the world these days I wouldn't waist to much time playing make believe
@@bradzimmerman3171either way the people who repent and believe in God are better off in the afterlife. Because in the case that he is real, you'll be in hell while the people who took life seriously are in heaven.
I’m soooo stoked that you got a 6.5 it is one of my favorites and is my current daily. Can’t wait to see updates.
Hell yeah 6.5 turbo diesel! Was a good engine. There was a good purpose for those in the day but still a really good and reliable motor. I'm glad to see you reviewing this platform. It's a long lost. Don't forget me. There's a reason why US military use this engine for so many years in Marine application as well. Appreciate the content brother!
The marine version was much stronger than the civilian version. The Hummers all got the good 6.5 🤘🏽⚔️
I paid 100 bucks for a 96 6.5 diesel suburban fully loaded. Still most comfortable vehicle I’ve ever had 😂750,000 km ran like a top. Insane fuel mileage. For some reason don’t think it was original engine tho lol
I've had two 6.5 diesels. Biggest flaw with them was the FSD/PMD which GM mounted on top of the intake and over heats. Relocating it to the firewall or basically anywhere else is the fix. After that, exhaust and a descent tune and it wakes them right up.
Ditching the highly restrictive stock turbo with those other mods helps even more. I did all that with a hx40wii turbo on my 82 k5, turned up the fuel since I have a mechanical 6.5, and that really woke it up when compared to running the stock gm5 turbo. Best part is exhaust temps actually run cooler going up steap hills up here in Washington along with not having issues going the speed limit or slightly higher.
The stock upper intake plenum is highly restrictive so a higher flowing one helps too.
I have both a 6.2 and a 6.5 The 6.2 is a 85 k20 and the 6.5 is a 98 k3500 dually with a nv4500 they were decent enough rigs for their time
I hope to see more videos with this truck. I’ve been hoping to see what you would do with building one of these trucks up
I had a 84 gmc 2500
With the 5.7 diesel.
I had the injectors and the pump rebuilt and it was the best truck I ever owned
What would the boys at A&D say if you just dropped this off when you go to pick up the Rustmax 😂😂😂
😂👍
😂
I have a 6.5, I have had it for 3 years now, and it runs really good no blow by and its at 194k miles. I really like mine. Doesn't have modern power but it gets the job done and sounds amazing
The only real. Problems with the 6.5 is pdm on the side of injection pump you can replace it an it should start better when you move it to some where else than side of injection pump an that pdm module will last longer than 3 to 5 years
I own 3 of these 6.5's. One of them being non turbo which was a rarer option here in canada. People have always shat on these, I personally haven't had a problem and they are fun to drive with a bit of tuning/work. Love the videos man!
Currently working on mine, restoring it, as far as engine performance and upgrades, I went with an hx40 turbo, high output injectors, feed the beast mod, pmd relocated, duramax cooling fan with an upgraded thermostat, and headstuds, all that basically “bomb” proofs it
Also, check the wastegate. Either someone wired it open or it's stuck. I believe it runs on vacuum as well so maybe vacuum leak.
A shop I worked at over 20 years ago had a 96 3500 dually 2wd. We had the injection pump & nozzles rebuilt, and it woke it up over stock. Injection rebuilder increased pressures by 10%. We also relocated the electronic module on the side of the pump onto an aluminum heat sink mounted to the firewall with a wire extension harness. Did that quite a few times to different trucks.
I had the 6.2l Detroit diesel in a square body. Good engine & strong, but slower than anything. I have an LBZ for personal use but drive a Detroit for a living, love the DD's & my Duramax for personal use.
There’s a starter support bracket that 6.5’s need. Other wise damage to the block will occur. A fluid damper is a must and a mechanical waste gate. Delete the factory vacuum waste gate.
I have a 6.2 blazer and a 6.5 k3500, I put 3k pounds in the bed of the 6.5 and barely noticed it. The 6.2 has moved a trailer with the one ton on it around the yard.
I’ve also had a parts truck that sat 15 years start on the first crank without touching anything, for some reason I love these old detroits, I might have a problem
It may be old and need alot of work, but it's diesel and it's a chevy!
This is the earliest I've been, love the content! I got your channel for GM diesel, Powerstroke central for, well, Powerstrokes, ziptiesnbiasplies for idi diesels, complete toilet garage for olds 350 diesel content, I just need to find me a ram/cummins creator. Awesome content as usual man, keep it up!
Sometimes the waste gate gets stuck and that's probably why the pressure reading for the wastegate is so high and not changing
That hood latch broken and the abs flashing is my experience with Chevy as well. Love the truck, and those engines. Always wanted one. Why? Because no one else does. lol
Need to check the glow plugs and make sure they are coming on. Thats the hard starting. Should have a wait to start light. The 6.5 likes its glow plugs. The glow plug controller are common for not working to.
Build it Josh, to the max, I’ve never seen it done before, It would be very interesting!!! From central Fl. brother!
Rebuild! I can’t wait!
I have a 6.2 & a LmL really want to get my hands on a 6.5 & a Lb7 I’m glad that 6.5 landed on your hands brotha and not the junkyard
I would be interested in a 6.5 build, seems like they are pretty affordable, just don’t know if you can make it affordable in the engine department, seemed like they like to crack the heads in the early years
Ive owned 3 of these put a total of 650000 miles on all 3 the rubber breaks down in crankshaft harmonic balancer causes breakage of crankshaft! Get kit to remote mount pmd in front bumper!! Drive my 2000 k2500 daily 16.5 mpg with 297500 miles on her! Great little engines!!
love the old obs!!! My dream trucks are 6.0L powerstroke 7.3 powerstroke 7.3 idi 6.9 idi 6.2 and 6.5 they all are the best sounding diesels.
6.no😂
That actually sounds like a strong one. I've driven 6.5s that would just sit on the converter like a turd when you power brake it.
My dad bought a new 95 Chevy 2500 with a 6.5 turbo 4wd 5 speed. Had been a fairly good truck it has somewhere around 370,000 on it!
Paid 800 for my LLY and drove it home. Yes, it needed some work but you can't beat cheap chevys!
When you see that it’s reading 14 psi there might not actually be a problem. It could just be reading atmospheric pressure.
Nice truck 👍 I have a 94 with well over 350,000 miles and still running strong. Put new glow plugs, glow driver, relocate the PMD driver to the fire wall, and slap a new turbo on it. That truck will last with that done to it and start with no issues even in -20° weather. Definitely a keeper and with a plow it's definitely going to make clearing snow easy in a heated cab on a cold winter day.. The Meyers E60 pump on the plow is a very good dependable unit. The truck will be great on fuel and very useful it may not win all the races but it will pull a barn down.
I am very glad that you have an SP Tools jump pack. It is the very best on the market.
Please build this thing would be wicked to see one of these done up lol
Yeessss!! OBS baby! I got a 95 K2500 5.7 gasser w/ only 106k original miles.
I’ve got 1500 right now by the time you get ready to sell I’ll probably have more than that. I’ll probably have two or 25 hired by the time you ready
Do the hx35 turbo conversion you’ll be impressed with it I think
I’m jealous, I’ve been looking for the same truck to use as a plow for our driveway. Good find 👍
Taking it back old school im genuinely excited to see what ya do to this wether it stays stock or not. Great find and investment id hold on to it for life. The detroit diesel in semis are in ny opinion the most reliable motor followed by the cat C15.
Very common for the starter bracket to get left off when the starter is replaced or for it to loosen up, which causes the bolts, blocks to break, or for the bolt holes to get messed up. Stock oil cooler lines also like to leak oil either from coming off the clips that hold them to the fittings in the block or from the crimps failing. Its common to upgrade the lines to a better set.
For quality parts a good place for engine parts is Quadstar Tuning. The guys that run it know these engines like the back of their hand.
Upgrading battery cables sizes also helps these to start when cold if it hasn't been done already since the stock size battery cables is to small. If the engine isn't turning over fast enough it has issues starting. Just upgrading battery cables, installing a powermaster starter and new glow plugs helped get my dad's 94 k2500 restarted after he accidentally ran it out of fuel when he bought her. Before she was having issues reprimed. Fuel injection codes can come from air in the fuel, which can be caused by issues with the lift pump circuit.
Plus Plus I could be wrong I believe most scan tools also pull up atmospheric pressure which is why it's reading 14-15 psi at idle.
I triple dog dare you to do at least a mild power build on this thing. Hx35, high flow intake manifold, lift pump, straight pipe, tune. Also dyno before and after.
Because the turbo boost pressure sensor is already stuck in range I’d replace that cuz it’s telling the computer that actuates the IP to command full fuel. These are IDIs with the same injection system as a 6.9/7.3 IDI just with a computer in the valley of the motor that frys out. Relocate the computer and that’s most of the issues besides the stock fuel system that needs help.
Start with boost pressure sensor, & that may fix it. It’s rolling coal because it sees boost signal when there isn’t any.
Great deal on that truck! Low miles too. If the frame's decent body panels can be replaced! Sounds like it runs pretty well
If the truck has tilt steering, there is a lever on the left side of the steering column towards the dash board. If you do end up keeping the truck, Quadstar Tunning is an excellent place to get parts. And the customer service is great.
That's funny! Years ago, I got a 1993 Chevy 3500 6.5 Detroit Diesel, running for 850. It also came with a snow plow, although I left the plow on the side of the road. Normally I don't liter on the highway, but I needed to make it more than 900 miles home, and I had severe trailer sway because of how the weight was distributed on the trailer. So snow plow had to go. So while it would run... it just wouldn't stop, because all the brake lines were rusted through. I replaced the brake lines, and I still use it now, yesterday just ran 532 miles round trip. My HP is 190 and Torque is 440. I have a few other diesels, but the 6.5 is my workhorse.
BTW, As far as rolling coal, and possible turbo issues, check for exhaust leaks... My 6.5 was rolling coal and had no power, like none, until I replaced the manifolds and crossover pipe, along with new gaskets. Now I have a lot more acceleration, and all my "coal" disappeared.
Complete rebuild as a daily driver . These get good mileage. FICM relocation , and a new lift pump .
I've never seen a square body diesel chevy come in the lot before. Definitely a rare find
We love ya and are grateful you keep the grind going!
I appreciate that
Keep it and restore it!
Black smoke = too much fuel and not enough air. I think your headed in the right direction with a turbo issue/possible boost leak.
Awesome truck.. great truck for my farm to clear the road . 😂 in winter and grading the long gravel road . Perfect as she is.
Right on
I was told to replace all 6.5 electronics like starter or alternator with 6.5 diesel boat electronic components to bullet proof the engine
Tilt on on bottom of the column it's a funky lever
This is awesome I miss my 1996 chevy 1500 with this motor
I'd keep that thing around for work duties, show it a lil love and I bet she'll be more reliable than the rest.
Hell yeah! Last year i bought a rust free, 1 owner 02 lb7 for $500 off my boss.... the catch, he went off the road in 2014 and hit an embankment and rolled the passenger side frame rail, smashed both pass doors and rocker. So after sitting 10 years, i threw a battery in it and it started. I put another $1500 in it replacing the frame, doors, and other ticky tack stuff. Still need to fix the rocker and swap the goodies from my rot box 03 lb7 but i drive the hell out of it. Its my new toy and my lmm is staying as my daily/ tow rig.
That’s an awesome story glad it worked out for you
I would like to see you restore that old truck I know they aren't worth a lot but I think it would be nice to see it all fixed up
No way I would sell that. I would totally rebuild that whole truck just for fun and daily the hell out of it. And I am a cummins guy. So jealous right now you have that. Sweet truck. I can't wait for updates. Gratz brother.
They were super bad about the crankshaft splitting at the front 2 cylinders. We couldn't find a crank once and used a 454 foraged crank in it. It's worked for about a year in the rollback tow truck it was in. When it broke the 3rd time, the owner put a 454 engine in the tow truck.
I do not know if you are still planing on selling this truck but i would definitely keep it for my own snow removal if you are in that type of climate. Awesome deal bud!!!
14.5 psi should be atmospheric pressure
I had a 94 k2500 6.5 nv4500, rebuilt the motor, did all the metal work and painted it myself with bomber blue metallic. Sold it a few years back for my LLY dmax. Had too many trucks. Should have never sold it, such a reliable dependable truck and was a blast to drive.
14 and some PSI is the pressure with 1 atmosphere without any vacuum or pressure.
Automatic transmissions have flex plates. Manual transmissions have flywheels. Both parts have ring gears that engage the starter.
I have a 93 Dakota that I got for $1000. The guy was complaining about it being hard to start. So I took it home cleaned all the injectors and it fired right up and runs amazing. Pretty much everything was good I did have to get a new speedometer cable cuz the old one broke, and the thermostat took a L on me, but it’s a really mint truck
You have to build that thing brother!
Good ol 6.5
The 6.5 loves injection pumps mine back in the day ate 3
I have a 6.5 in a dump truck when i got it it was dumping black smoke and ran poorly at higher rpms i couldn't figure out what was wrong. But it was just the airfilter was plugged up. So i just stuck a cold air filter on it and it runs great i just try to keep it clean
You can't go wrong with a obs personally I've had 8 of them I've heard that the lbz turbos will bolt up
I have a 95 6.5 and an 03 LB7. When my LB7 is getting maintenance done I have to rely on the 6.5 to pull my trailers. You can't even compare the power, its night and day. BUT the 6.5 always gets the job done, just at a snails pace. Like everyone said, move the PMD, delete the vacuum pump, better lift pump, keep an eye on harmonic balancer, 185 Tstat, duramax fan, and ALWAYS reinstall the starter bracket. You will also eat glow plugs so buy them in bulk. 4 inch exhaust and if you have a VIN F even better, no emissions and larger precups. Also use fuel lubricant or that DS4 injection pump will go. Almost forgot, oil cooler lines, replace them before they disconnect from the block and spew all your oil out and lock your motor up before you can turn it off. It still has been the most reliable truck i have owned. Good luck and grear score!
I miss my 6.5 turbo diesel
My $500 truck is a 2001 Silverado 2500 HD and it's has the 8.1 with 100,000 miles. It came with a plow as well.
Nice 👍
Nice come up man hope you restore it and have a lil bit more power just a lil bit lol
I think you should find a good roller maybe a crew cab and put the 6.5 in it and build it to be as powerful as possible then go head to head with you L5P on cost and power
Super 60 or super 54 turbo from quadstar tuning is the best turbo for a 6.5!!! Also will make it sound like a jet
I have a feeling you might clean up the rust a little or gall in love with it and go all out
AYY A 6.5l I’m a little familiar with them 😂🤝
Where i live , that truck all day $4000.
When you get radar satellite, I’d be interested in it. I live in Michigan.
This is one of my fav gens 😎 you should bring it to a truck show 😂
Always reinstall the bracket on the front of the starter it can or will break the block my truck has a broke block. Vacuum lines to the wastegate and the little vacuum controller on the driver side valve cover could be bad. Either fix that or put a manual waste gate on it. My 6.5 has a hx35 off a 98.5-02 24v, 3” intake plenum from kb diesel, and a Quadstar tune. Really woke it up fastest 0-60 with a dragy was 8.03 and 15.94 in the 1/4
Loved my LLY, love the 7.3 Excursion I have now, but I Absolutely miss my old 2000 C3500 SRW. 6.5. It was a dog, but it got the job done. Make damn sure that starter bracket is on or you will snap the block where it sits. Keep a spare PMD in the truck at all times, as well as do a PMD relocate if its still in its stock location on the injection pump. Oil cooler line upgrade is a must too. Quadstar Tuning and Leroy Diesel are 2 vendors who live 6.5. Ohh. A diamond eye crossover and turbo back will bring that turbo sound out a bit. :-)
Thanks for the advice
Would love to see a mild beater/daily 6.5 build !
Hey I'm local in corunna keep it until March get content plow some driveways. I'll buy it from you then.
Does the scan tool read injector balance rates and frp? Looking for a good scan tooo for these things specifically. Thanks
On my 2000 6.5 diesel truck 1 ton if the glow plugs aren't working correctly they are extremely hard to start
WHAT A NEW GREAT PROJECT
3500 to 4500 in my area .. missouri.
14psi at idle is because atmospheric pressure is around 14psi, always have to subtract 14 to get actual boost reading
Makes sense thanks for the clarification
I happen to have an extra good gm 3 turbo and am located in Baldwin. I have other parts also if you need them.
I miss both my 6.5 and my 6.2
I was looking into buying one of those before I got my Duramax if I found a good deal on one I would still buy it I always liked those old 6.5s
Josh, I hope you go over the build numbers on the Sunkist Truck
Thanks
I definitely will
Cant go wronf but needs a turbo forsure!
The 14psi at idle might mean zero boost. Since one atmosphere is zero boost. It might just mean the pressure is seeing atmospheric pressure
Good to know thank you
Man this one should be redone but in a 100% stock maybe a beefier tire then factory straight pipe and that’s it be really nice to see a older diesel redone and brought back to great condition instead of just another duramax not that I don’t like them but can’t go wrong with the oldies
