Pic Dawson worked for my father for a year circa 1962. I remember him as a "class clown" type guy with a thick southern accent. It is my understanding that he met Cass when she was in the Big 3 and then followed her out to LA when she hit big. My dad ran into Pic in 1977 on the streets of Georgetown, DC. Pic stated that he had become a "drug dealer to the stars", but was now on the straight and narrow. He asked my dad to cash a check for him and dad did so, knowing Pic's dad was a former State Department mucketymuck and was of some wealth. The check bounced. I still have it.
My head is about to explode with the 'connect the dots' puzzle you have presented with so many of my musical heroes of the 60's and 70's! I can't say enough positive things about your work! (I had completely forgotten about MDA in that era! One of the few things I never did. LOL)

I look at the industry now and when I see managers like Scooter Braum with Justin Bieber I don't get how that isn't trafficking? Justin was taken from Canada put in an illegal apartment (Braun said so himself) in Atlanta, and then he was given drugs, sent off to "Diddy's camp." Bieber publicly claimed he was a drug addict by 13 while he was under Braun's care. I could go on and on, it's the whole industry and area. Hillsong LA, Scientology, Brian Singers The Den, Manson, the Finders, The Franklin Scandal, Leon Black, David Geffen, Epstein. It's sadly all too real

Check out (the late) Dave McGowan's book "Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon : Laurel Canyon, Covert Ops & The Dark Heart of the Hippie Dream" It gives a completely different perspective of the Laurel Canyon official myth.
This is one my favorite episodes of this series since it examines the "darker" elements that the Laurel Canyon celebs were dabbling in and the chain of events that ended the whole "60's" scene. Even today, many celebrities that were part of this "scene" (that are still alive) are hush--hush on all of this. Kind of makes you wonder. Now watching this episode for the third time.
@@memoryfield I find it interesting that Bruce Dern (who gave Peter Fonda his first tab of "acid" in "The Trip" -1967) would play George Spahn in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. He probably knew some of the actual people being portrayed in the movie. I like Brue Dern's acting..and the fact that he's still active at 85, but there's a "fly on the wall" who still keeps quiet about "the good o' days".
@@stevengallant6363 I've Seen it. The back-story between Frank Sinatra and Mia Farrow during the making of that film is more interesting than the film itself. Kaplan's biopic "Sinatra -- The Chairman" gets into how Mr. Sinatra reacted to the whole "scene" at that time.

Billy Doyke managed the guy from Traffic for awhile I can't recall his name but he sued Billy for some kind of unethical money swipe and the judge found for billy and rewarded him an obscene. Amount of money. It's in True Crime and Moonshine videos on Cass. Lots in Dawson and Doyke too but no Doyke pics There's some evidence Cass showed up at Cielo to buy drugs and found the slaughter. She thought pic did it and the blood PIG was PIC the video here nails the two parasites for exploiting her and keeping her on H. The bio of Cass is great

Man, your best yet! From what I've read both Tex and Sadie had been to the house prior to the murders. Tex had been friends with Altobelli's gardner Dean Morehouse. And maybe the reason Abigail waved at Susan was because she recognized her. And I've often wondered if Tex knew Jay, because it should be noted that upon his arrival in L.A. Tex opened up a wig shop. Could be a flimsy connection but still one worth looking into. Thanks again!
Tex had been there for sure, as he once came over to borrow a car from Terry Melcher. Took his credit card too and went back and filled up the 100-gallon tank on the Manson Family school bus. Apparently, Charlie had been to the Cielo house no less than about 6 or 7 times between 1968 and 1969 but that's the topic of the next one. As for the strange detail of Gibbie waving at Susan Atkins.... that's one of the weirder details. I never understood that one but I think it reflects that whole issue of people just being way too trusting with everybody in that time period. Strange woman walking up and down the halls of a gated house up in the Hollywood Hills after midnight with no explanation. And Abigail just waves at her as she passes the door to the room? Bizarre. Then the strange woman in the house murders her. No cell phones back then. Phone lines were already cut, so there was nothing they could have done at that point. Supposedly, Steve McQueen had planned on being there at the house that same night but changed his plans. You know that MF would have fought them all to the very end. They would have killed him, but he would have given them a fight for sure.
@@memoryfield A mistake on my part. It was Jacobson who'd hired Moorehouse as a groundskeeper, and I believe the time Tex borrowed Melcher's car it was to retrieve Jacobson from jail? Also, and I cant remember where I read this, as researching anything online hits you with an updated speed of velocity, there exists a photo of Susan Atkins sunbathing poolside at Cielo Drive. I don't know about that Billy. Steve McQueen was a martial arts expert, trained by Bruce Lee no less. He would have been up against two drugged out little girls with knives and a punk kid with a .22 pistol. Also it's reasonable to assume that if Steve made a move on them Jay and Wojciech would have backed him up. They could have turned the tables on them. We'll never know but my money would have been on Steve, Jay and Wojciech.
Dean met Tex at Dennis Wilsons. Morehouse met Charlie two years before and lured Ruth away from home. Actually I suspect Ruth was looking for a way out They Sayed at Cielo while it was empty and Tex was a pool boy for Terry. Pool boys are house boys caretakers drug gophers and you know. I really think Tex did much more to mastermind the crimes that Manson. Doyke and Pic along with LaBiancas daughter knew him and had much more traditional motives. Tex was drug burn king and truly antisocial Manson needed control so badly he threw himself into the fire trying to keep his grip on the tribe. The thing is he never really had them in his control except during the trial. Self sabotage was his forte

There certainly were alot of interconnections in the seedy underbelly of those times, nevertheless the victims of those awful crimes didn't deserve to die in such a horrendous way. Connection to Terry Melcher - Dennis Wilson. Yes, Manson & several of his groupies had actually stayed at the house when Melcher let Wilson use it. Of course, there is the much discussed issue of a song that Manson submitted to Wilson which was supposedly left unreviewed, however, there is also a story about parts of it ending up in a very late BB song...would have to dig back to see which. Basically, Manson (who fancied himself a Bob Dylan type character) had bad blood with Wilson & Melcher...that said, very small community with lots of talk/connections & Manson was looking to make his "mark" for his Helter Skelter kickoff.
Yes, that song, which Manson had titled "Cease to Exist" was altered significantly and renamed "Never Learn Not to Love" and was recorded and released by The Beach Boys in December of 1968. Manson was pissed that they had changed the lyrics and the title. But according to Dennis Wilson, he claimed that they paid a large sum of money to Manson for the exclusive rights to the song.
You are correct. Mark Lindsay told me it was really about Melcher. Dennis Wilson had hooked up with a couple of the Manson girls, they brought Manson to the house to play a demo tape for Melcher that had been recorded. There’s more to it than that, but he passed on the tape, actually thinking it was real bad. Lindsay and Wilson were there too. Manson never forgave them…

My sister was roommates with Candice Bergen at the University of Pennsylvania and she told me that Candice had met Charlie Manson and he scared the "shit" out of her!

Interesting how elusive Billy Doyle has turned out to be. It's also fiendishly difficult to find any information about Cass's boyfriend at the time of her death, George Caldwell. He seems to disappear off the face of the earth, never to be seen again. I'm not a conspiracy theorist by any means, but there are a lot of odd things about her life.

I don't think it could have been a random event. There are plenty of other homes in the area they could have done this to. There has to be some kind of connection.
You are 100% correct. It was NOT a random event and there WAS a connection to that house. But it was not for the reason(s) that many have speculated and not due to the occupants who were inside at the time the events occurred. In about a week the very next video in this series is going to focus on that connection specifically. So stay tuned!
This was by far the best video yet of the series. So much more in depth about the people running around in laurel canyon during those days. It’s all very mesmerising. Even now after all of these years. I’ve done extensive reading and research on this subject so I’m thrilled that you have done this series. Keep it going. I could talk about this forever lol. BTW I’ve got like 10 books on this and am reading through “the family” now by Ed Sanders. Not a big fan of his but I admire what he did to get the story.

Great video and I know you are really trying to get all your facts correct but I just have a few things that are incorrect. One of the L.A.P.D. mugshots you showed of Susan Atkins is actually not her but it’s a punk rock singer named Texas Terri. Also Mickey Dolenz didn’t take the photo of Pic Dawson at Cass house but it was from Henry Diltz amazing collection. And Roman Polanski was not to begin directing Day of the Dolphin the next day after the March 15th party. The film was in its infancy at that time.The film had many obstacles and wasn’t released until 1973. He was originally scheduled to be the director/screen writer for the project for United Artists but the project had just begun in 1969. Mike Nichols ended up directing it with Embassy Pictures but Polanski was actually scouting locations for the film in London in August 1969 at the time he received the call learning of Sharon’s death and abandoned the project soon after that. But great work and I really enjoy your channel but I just wanted to clear up a few things.

The house at 10050 Cielo Drive was then owned by Rudolph Altobelli who rented the house from May 1966 to Jan 1969 to Terry Melcher, (producer for Columbia Records), & his girlfriend Candice Bergman. Feb 15, 1969 renting to Roman Polanski, Sharon Tate & dog Prudence. After the murders, he could not find a new renter. So he mover in himself, & spent 2 decades, before selling the house in 1988. The last renter was Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor. He recorded the album "The Downward Spiral" there. Then he moved to New Orleans, taking the front door with him in 1993. The building has been replaced & address changed.
can you just imagine that if they had had you back then with all the imformation that youve found , history would have been totally changed by these facts and if any of the detectives on these cases are still alive they must be thinking that they wished you were around then amazing stuff !
There's a very interesting story about Cass, Peter Sellers, and Peter Lawford, in which Manson himself brings up in a prison interview, very briefly, to supposedly shed some light on "behind the scenes" of what was really going on. Throw the creepy dealings of Roman Polanski into the mix, along with Dennis Wilson, etc., and who knows where and how far this stuff went, apart from the obvious mayhem of the famous murders.

I had a flareup of diverticulitis ( a family trait unfortunately) beginning last thursday and am just now getting over it. I have Forever Changes as well and yeah, it's a fabulous album. Crazy how bad it tanked when it first came out. It took the rest of the country (USA) about 30 years to finally catch up to the genius of that one. It did a lot better in the UK though. And that doesn't surprise me at all.
Me too. As far as I know, either none exist or they have been kept strictly private for decades. I've never seen a single one of these two together. I finally saw a picture of Abigail Folger in Cass' backyard sitting down on the back porch but that was it.

Hi Billy. Really enjoyed these clips about the Laurel Canyon subculture. Very well done... Have you seen the documentary Tom Petty and Jakob Dylan produced? Its called "Echo in the Canyon." It also captures the spirit of that time but from different angle. Very provocative stuff regarding Manson & Co. I get the impression that Cass Elliot may have unknowingly become the center of gravity for that subculture which attracted all kinds of people. Some with sincere motives and others with very creepy, evil intent......... How very lucky both Cass and Terry Melcher were. They could very easily have become targets for Manson and his ilk.........
Actually yes, I have seen that one and so many others that came out way before I started delving into it myself. I'm no pioneer, that's for sure. I have listened to, watched and read so many other things produced by others and then I tried to pull out only the things that really interested me and then I went with all of that. And I think you're right on when it comes to Cass. She meant so well, but there were people there that did her no good in the end. She was maybe just TOO nice and a little too eager to befriend just about anyone there. They took advantage of her.

We have a place and a music studio in Orem, Utah, and I just happened to be in California that summer and working on a different project for about four months but I had to drive into LA every other weekend four+ hours each way to get this done. I think I was there on five different occasions that summer. We're working on a new memoryfield album at the moment and that takes up most of my time, but I have plans for many new and different video series starting in 2024. Glad you enjoyed it!

I think is always controversial and risky make statements about rock stars or about Manson’s group, because every one have our own ideas and mythologie, ideas born from what we have “known” from other people along so many years; but i find refreshing your style to go into that whit respect, equanimity and profond researching. You can find a photo of Doyle in Tom O'Neills' book Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties, and most of the other important players in the Manson affair. Doyle and his running buddy (I forget his name just now) are discussed in detail in the aforementioned book. Also, the long standing theory that Melchers' previous residence there was reason, or part of the reason for the murders is debunked in the Tom O'Neill book.
That was the reason Manson always gave for choosing that house, according to some in the family, because he was able to explain the layout of the house pretty well due to Terry Melcher living there. They said he didn't care one way or the other who was living there but it made it easier for those he sent that he was able to tell them where each room was and all that.

You could be right about Steve Grogan. He is still alive and in fact, is the only Manson Family member convicted of murder who was ever released from prison and that was in 1985. He learned to play the guitar from fellow Manson Family member and prison-mate Bobby Beausoleil.
I recently saw a RUclips video last week. The band Love had 2 black dudes in it . I don't know which one said ghost but, he came home to see (I'm pretty shore it was Doyle) & asked who was in his bedroom. His door was always closed. Doyle replied Sadie (Susan Atkins). He told Doyle to have Charlie come by. Sorry, ghost is after he told him about hanging out with him. Doyle said he was a bit prejudice. The guy from Love said why r u hanging with him. The bedroom door opened and out came Susan. He said the smell was out of this world. He ended up tossing both Susan & Doyle out. Thr names I know r right are Susan & ghe guy from Love. I'm 75% on Doyle. If he was arrested for murder with the Manson gang it was him. Thank you kindly , Kevin

And the Manson Family guy in question who was with Susan Atkins was actually Bobby Beausoleil, who is still in prison to this day for the murder of Gary Hinman
That episode has not yet been made. John Phillips implicated Cass Elliot as a person of interest in the early days of the investigation of the Manson Murders by telling the police that it was not the word "PIG" scrawled in blood on the doors of the victims, but rather, he said it was "PIC". And "Pic" Dawson was a criminal and a drug dealer who was close to Cass Elliot and was often seen at her house in Laurel Canyon. So the police went and questioned Cass Elliot on a number of occasions because of what John Phillips had told them, which was finally proven to be incorrect.

hello Memoryfield, Eric Yung's book is not very eloquent on the motives of the crimes of the evening of August 9, 1969. I think that at one point, Manson wanting to start a war between blacks and whites was not very watching on who he was attacking. He was far from being zero in his way of doing things and, engineering question, who knows what exactly went through his mind at that time? He had methods that leave you speechless (especially if you observe the people who undergo them) to stay with the stranglehold on his group but, we also understand that his world has been partly overtaken by events. Force to you.
One of the great mysteries of our time. So many theories and so many unanswered questions. My opinions here are just a drop in the ocean and I'm sure there are thousands of others out there who have studied this case much more than I have. Thanks for your input!
I'd like to know, what about the guy living in the guest house that Steve Parent was visiting. He was lucky they didn't go his place. Could he have heard what was hapoening? Who discovered and how much time after were the police called,
He was held until the bodies of the La Biancas were found and they discovered that the cops (who took him into custody when they found the bodies and realized he was the only one who survived) had him, the only person they were looking at until the LaBiancas, in custody at the time that the couple was murdered. I am quite sure it was him who called the cops when he discovered the bodies. I believe he was the gardener. It's been a long time since I read Helter Skelter (about twenty years) but that's what I remember from the book.
I'm pretty sure the one who discovered the bodies was the cleaning lady who showed up about 9 am the next morning. Our friend over in the guest house was still sound asleep until he wandered outside to see the entire place crawling with cops and coroners. And yes, they immediately took him into custody to question him.

Even though you say you don't mean to imply that the Tate murders weren't the result of drug deals gone bad, several writers/investigators into these crimes have come to that conclusion, and even the LAPD entertained that as a serious possibility. Apparently Sebring still owed money for product he had received. The Labianca murders may have been at least partly driven by the fact that Mr Labianca owed large sums of money to some pretty heavy people. So there does appear to be more than meets the eye with these crimes. These are still horrible, unspeakable, truly awful crimes, but it's good to know there was more going on than just deranged lunatics. Manson and Co were still deranged lunatics, but there were probably reasons other than just subliminal messages from the Beatles and a believed coming race war.
I think the dealers were present to cut out any up and coming middlemen or women within the community, like buy direct from us and we'll set you up. I'm sure Cass had a stash for sale along with a number of other enterprising souls with the engaging business at hand and the night owl nightlife mentality that was present down on the strip.

Intriguing that MDA is woven into this crazy story. The original love drug, it is regarded by poly-abusers and old timers as ‘real Extasy’, as opposed to MDMA which appeared much later on the scene. I wasn’t aware that MDA had a connection to the Manson murders, but despite the love drug nickname it was always regarded as quite hard core, not the sort of thing your local cowboy would be selling. For obvious reasons, the full story of how and why the 1960s ‘turned bad’ has never been told, and likely never will be. Those who were there can recount their part, but it never entirely hangs together as one coherent story, despite often looking like it should.

Pic Dawson worked for my father for a year circa 1962. I remember him as a "class clown" type guy with a thick southern accent. It is my understanding that he met Cass when she was in the Big 3 and then followed her out to LA when she hit big. My dad ran into Pic in 1977 on the streets of Georgetown, DC. Pic stated that he had become a "drug dealer to the stars", but was now on the straight and narrow. He asked my dad to cash a check for him and dad did so, knowing Pic's dad was a former State Department mucketymuck and was of some wealth. The check bounced. I still have it.

I look at the industry now and when I see managers like Scooter Braum with Justin Bieber I don't get how that isn't trafficking? Justin was taken from Canada put in an illegal apartment (Braun said so himself) in Atlanta, and then he was given drugs, sent off to "Diddy's camp." Bieber publicly claimed he was a drug addict by 13 while he was under Braun's care. I could go on and on, it's the whole industry and area. This is one my favorite episodes of this series since it examines the "darker" elements that the Laurel Canyon celebs were dabbling in and the chain of events that ended the whole "60's" scene. Even today, many celebrities that were part of this "scene" (that are still alive) are hush--hush on all of this. Kind of makes you wonder. Now watching this episode for the third time.
It's probably a chapter in their past lives that they would like to forget and want others to forget as well. :(
@@memoryfield I find it interesting that Bruce Dern (who gave Peter Fonda his first tab of "acid" in "The Trip" -1967) would play George Spahn in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. He probably knew some of the actual people being portrayed in the movie. I like Brue Dern's acting..and the fact that he's still active at 85, but there's a "fly on the wall" who still keeps quiet about "the good o' days".

Billy Doyke managed the guy from Traffic for awhile I can't recall his name but he sued Billy for some kind of unethical money swipe and the judge found for billy and rewarded him an obscene. Amount of money. It's in True Crime and Moonshine videos on Cass. Lots in Dawson and Doyke too but no Doyke pics There's some evidence Cass showed up at Cielo to buy drugs and found the slaughter. She thought pic did it and the blood PIG was PIC the video here nails the two parasites for exploiting her and keeping her on H. The bio of Cass is great

Man, your best yet! From what I've read both Tex and Sadie had been to the house prior to the murders. Tex had been friends with Altobelli's gardner Dean Morehouse. And maybe the reason Abigail waved at Susan was because she recognized her. And I've often wondered if Tex knew Jay, because it should be noted that upon his arrival in L.A. Tex opened up a wig shop. Could be a flimsy connection but still one worth looking into. Thanks again!
Tex had been there for sure, as he once came over to borrow a car from Terry Melcher. Took his credit card too and went back and filled up the 100-gallon tank on the Manson Family school bus. Apparently, Charlie had been to the Cielo house no less than about 6 or 7 times between 1968 and 1969 but that's the topic of the next one. As for the strange detail of Gibbie waving at Susan Atkins.... that's one of the weirder details. I never understood that one but I think it reflects that whole issue of people just being way too trusting with everybody in that time period. Strange woman walking up and down the halls of a gated house up in the Hollywood Hills after midnight with no explanation. And Abigail just waves at her as she passes the door to the room? Bizarre. Then the strange woman in the house murders her. No cell phones back then. Phone lines were already cut, so there was nothing they could have done at that point. Supposedly, Steve McQueen had planned on being there at the house that same night but changed his plans. You know that MF would have fought them all to the very end. They would have killed him, but he would have given them a fight for sure.

Also, and I cant remember where I read this, as researching anything online hits you with an updated speed of velocity, there exists a photo of Susan Atkins sunbathing poolside at Cielo Drive. I don't know about that Billy. Steve McQueen was a martial arts expert, trained by Bruce Lee no less. He would have been up against two drugged out little girls with knives and a punk kid with a .22 pistol. Also it's reasonable to assume that if Steve made a move on them Jay and Wojciech would have backed him up. They could have turned the tables on them. We'll never know but my money would have been on Steve, Jay and Wojciech.
Dean met Tex at Dennis Wilsons. Morehouse met Charlie two years before and lured Ruth away from home. Actually I suspect Ruth was looking for a way out They Sayed at Cielo while it was empty and Tex was a pool boy for Terry. Pool boys are house boys caretakers drug gophers and you know. I really think Tex did much more to mastermind the crimes that Manson. Doyke and Pic along with LaBiancas daughter knew him and had much more traditional motives. Tex was drug burn king and truly antisocial Manson needed control so badly he threw himself into the fire trying to keep his grip on the tribe. The thing is he never really had them in his control except during the trial. Self sabotage was his forte

There certainly were alot of interconnections in the seedy underbelly of those times, nevertheless the victims of those awful crimes didn't deserve to die in such a horrendous way. Like you I don't believe in all the conspiracy theories, just an extremely brutal footnote to the 60s.

Connection to Terry Melcher - Dennis Wilson. Yes, Manson & several of his groupies had actually stayed at the house when Melcher let Wilson use it. Of course, there is the much discussed issue of a song that Manson submitted to Wilson which was supposedly left unreviewed, however, there is also a story about parts of it ending up in a very late BB song...would have to dig back to see which. Basically, Manson (who fancied himself a Bob Dylan type character) had bad blood with Wilson & Melcher...that said, very small community with lots of talk/connections & Manson was looking to make his "mark" for his Helter Skelter kickoff.
Yes, that song, which Manson had titled "Cease to Exist" was altered significantly and renamed "Never Learn Not to Love" and was recorded and released by The Beach Boys in December of 1968. Manson was pissed that they had changed the lyrics and the title. But according to Dennis Wilson, he claimed that they paid a large sum of money to Manson for the exclusive rights to the song.
You are correct. Mark Lindsay told me it was really about Melcher. Dennis Wilson had hooked up with a couple of the Manson girls, they brought Manson to the house to play a demo tape for Melcher that had been recorded. There’s more to it than that, but he passed on the tape, actually thinking it was real bad. Lindsay and Wilson were there too. Manson never forgave them…

Interesting how elusive Billy Doyle has turned out to be. It's also fiendishly difficult to find any information about Cass's boyfriend at the time of her death, George Caldwell. He seems to disappear off the face of the earth, never to be seen again. I'm not a conspiracy theorist by any means, but there are a lot of odd things about her life.

This was also the interview where he claims he witnessed John Phillips actually striking Cass Elliot in the face during a couple of heated arguments.
I don't think it could have been a random event. There are plenty of other homes in the area they could have done this to. There has to be some kind of connection.
You are 100% correct. It was NOT a random event and there WAS a connection to that house. But it was not for the reason(s) that many have speculated and not due to the occupants who were inside at the time the events occurred. In about a week the very next video in this series is going to focus on that connection specifically. So stay tuned!

Great video and I know you are really trying to get all your facts correct but I just have a few things that are incorrect. One of the L.A.P.D. mugshots you showed of Susan Atkins is actually not her but it’s a punk rock singer named Texas Terri. Also Mickey Dolenz didn’t take the photo of Pic Dawson at Cass house but it was from Henry Diltz amazing collection. And Roman Polanski was not to begin directing Day of the Dolphin the next day after the March 15th party. The film was in its infancy at that time.The film had many obstacles and wasn’t released until 1973. He was originally scheduled to be the director/screen writer for the project for United Artists but the project had just begun in 1969. Mike Nichols ended up directing it with Embassy Pictures but Polanski was actually scouting locations for the film in London in August 1969 at the time he received the call learning of Sharon’s death and abandoned the project soon after that. But great work and I really enjoy your channel but I just wanted to clear up a few things.

The house at 10050 Cielo Drive was then owned by Rudolph Altobelli who rented the house from May 1966 to Jan 1969 to Terry Melcher, (producer for Columbia Records), & his girlfriend Candice Bergman. Feb 15, 1969 renting to Roman Polanski, Sharon Tate & dog Prudence. After the murders, he could not find a new renter. So he mover in himself, & spent 2 decades, before selling the house in 1988. The last renter was Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor. He recorded the album "The Downward Spiral" there. Then he moved to New Orleans, taking the front door with him in 1993. The building has been replaced & address changed.

Saperstein was the first of Sharon's dogs to live at Cielo. Voyteck accidentally killed Saperstein with his car, so Roman bought Prudence for Sharon.

There's a very interesting story about Cass, Peter Sellers, and Peter Lawford, in which Manson himself brings up in a prison interview, very briefly, to supposedly shed some light on "behind the scenes" of what was really going on.
Throw the creepy dealings of Roman Polanski into the mix, along with Dennis Wilson, etc., and who knows where and how far this stuff went, apart from the obvious mayhem of the famous murders.

I have Forever Changes as well and yeah, it's a fabulous album. Crazy how bad it tanked when it first came out. It took the rest of the country (USA) about 30 years to finally catch up to the genius of that one. It did a lot better in the UK though. And that doesn't surprise me at all.

Me too. As far as I know, either none exist or they have been kept strictly private for decades. I've never seen a single one of these two together. I finally saw a picture of Abigail Folger in Cass' backyard sitting down on the back porch but that was it.

I get the impression that Cass Elliot may have unknowingly become the center of gravity for that subculture which attracted all kinds of people. Some with sincere motives and others with very creepy, evil intent......... How very lucky both Cass and Terry Melcher were. They could very easily have become targets for Manson and his ilk.........
Actually yes, I have seen that one and so many others that came out way before I started delving into it myself. I'm no pioneer, that's for sure. I have listened to, watched and read so many other things produced by others and then I tried to pull out only the things that really interested me and then I went with all of that. And I think you're right on when it comes to Cass. She meant so well, but there were people there that did her no good in the end. She was maybe just TOO nice and a little too eager to befriend just about anyone there. They took advantage of her.

We have a place and a music studio in Orem, Utah, and I just happened to be in California that summer and working on a different project for about four months but I had to drive into LA every other weekend four+ hours each way to get this done. I think I was there on five different occasions that summer. We're working on a new memoryfield album at the moment and that takes up most of my time, but I have plans for many new and different video series starting in 2024. Glad you enjoyed it!

You can find a photo of Doyle in Tom O'Neills' book Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties, and most of the other important players in the Manson affair. Doyle and his running buddy (I forget his name just now) are discussed in detail in the aforementioned book. Also, the long standing theory that Melchers' previous residence there was reason, or part of the reason for the murders is debunked in the Tom O'Neill book.

That was the reason Manson always gave for choosing that house, according to some in the family, because he was able to explain the layout of the house pretty well due to Terry Melcher living there. They said he didn't care one way or the other who was living there but it made it easier for those he sent that he was able to tell them where each room was and all that.

You could be right about Steve Grogan. He is still alive and in fact, is the only Manson Family member convicted of murder who was ever released from prison and that was in 1985. He learned to play the guitar from fellow Manson Family member and prison-mate Bobby Beausoleil.

I recently saw a RUclips video last week. The band Love had 2 black dudes in it . I don't know which one said ghost but, he came home to see (I'm pretty shore it was Doyle) & asked who was in his bedroom. His door was always closed. Doyle replied Sadie (Susan Atkins). He told Doyle to have Charlie come by. Sorry, ghost is after he told him about hanging out with him. Doyle said he was a bit prejudice. The guy from Love said why r u hanging with him. The bedroom door opened and out came Susan. He said the smell was out of this world. He ended up tossing both Susan & Doyle out. Thr names I know r right are Susan & ghe guy from Love. I'm 75% on Doyle. If he was arrested for murder with the Manson gang it was him.

The guy from Love was guitarist Johnny Echols, who was living in a house right near the base of Lookout Mountain and close to the Zappa/Tom Mix property. And the Manson Family guy in question who was with Susan Atkins was actually Bobby Beausoleil, who is still in prison to this day for the murder of Gary Hinman

That episode has not yet been made. John Phillips implicated Cass Elliot as a person of interest in the early days of the investigation of the Manson Murders by telling the police that it was not the word "PIG" scrawled in blood on the doors of the victims, but rather, he said it was "PIC". And "Pic" Dawson was a criminal and a drug dealer who was close to Cass Elliot and was often seen at her house in Laurel Canyon. So the police went and questioned Cass Elliot on a number of occasions because of what John Phillips had told them, which was finally proven to be incorrect.

hello Memoryfield, Eric Yung's book is not very eloquent on the motives of the crimes of the evening of August 9, 1969. I think that at one point, Manson wanting to start a war between blacks and whites was not very watching on who he was attacking. He was far from being zero in his way of doing things and, engineering question, who knows what exactly went through his mind at that time? He had methods that leave you speechless (especially if you observe the people who undergo them) to stay with the stranglehold on his group but, we also understand that his world has been partly overtaken by events. Force to you.
One of the great mysteries of our time. So many theories and so many unanswered questions. My opinions here are just a drop in the ocean and I'm sure there are thousands of others out there who have studied this case much more than I have. Thanks for your input!

I'd like to know, what about the guy living in the guest house that Steve Parent was visiting. He was lucky they didn't go his place. Could he have heard what was hapoening? Who discovered and how much time after were the police called,
He was held until the bodies of the La Biancas were found and they discovered that the cops (who took him into custody when they found the bodies and realized he was the only one who survived) had him, the only person they were looking at until the LaBiancas, in custody at the time that the couple was murdered. I am quite sure it was him who called the cops when he discovered the bodies. I believe he was the gardener. It's been a long time since I read Helter Skelter (about twenty years) but that's what I remember from the book.
I'm pretty sure the one who discovered the bodies was the cleaning lady who showed up about 9 am the next morning. Our friend over in the guest house was still sound asleep until he wandered outside to see the entire place crawling with cops and coroners. And yes, they immediately took him into custody to question him.

Even though you say you don't mean to imply that the Tate murders weren't the result of drug deals gone bad, several writers/investigators into these crimes have come to that conclusion, and even the LAPD entertained that as a serious possibility. Apparently Sebring still owed money for product he had received. The Labianca murders may have been at least partly driven by the fact that Mr Labianca owed large sums of money to some pretty heavy people. So there does appear to be more than meets the eye with these crimes. These are still horrible, unspeakable, truly awful crimes, but it's good to know there was more going on than just deranged lunatics. Manson and Co were still deranged lunatics, but there were probably reasons other than just subliminal messages from the Beatles and a believed coming race war.

I think the dealers were present to cut out any up and coming middlemen or women within the community, like buy direct from us and we'll set you up. I'm sure Cass had a stash for sale along with a number of other enterprising souls with the engaging business at hand and the night owl nightlife mentality that was present down on the strip.

Intriguing that MDA is woven into this crazy story. The original love drug, it is regarded by poly-abusers and old timers as ‘real Extasy’, as opposed to MDMA which appeared much later on the scene. I wasn’t aware that MDA had a connection to the Manson murders, but despite the love drug nickname it was always regarded as quite hard core, not the sort of thing your local cowboy would be selling. For obvious reasons, the full story of how and why the 1960s ‘turned bad’ has never been told, and likely never will be. Those who were there can recount their part, but it never entirely hangs together as one coherent story, despite often looking like it should.
