RTX 2080 Ti not working? Bake it! (How-to guide)

  • I was looking to purchase a second-hand RTX 2080 Ti, but discovered it would crash within 30 seconds of putting any load on it, sometimes even crashing randomly while on the desktop. At one stage it also severely artifacted and the screen remained black, even after about four hard resets.
Not willing to give up on the card (can you blame me?), I decided to take it to someone who knows a thing or two about baking GPUs (thank Adam!). Here you can follow the step-by-step guide of how to put a malfunctioning GPU through the oven. Keep in mind that everything you do is at own risk!

The increase in the overclocking results that was achieved on both the core and especially the memory after baking remains absolutely amazing to me when comparing it to the overclocking results of an 'unbaked' graphics card, what a difference the high temperature of the liquid solder paste makes to eventually increase the clock frequency and overall outcome.

Thank you so much for this video.
My RMA'd card started blackscreen/artifacting again yesterday so i figured i'd try to bake it since no warranty anymore.
I disassembled it and put in the oven like you suggested and now it's back up and running better than before ! ( 2000pts gain in Furmark!)
And i've built a support bracket to prevent sagging and thus solder breakup.

@@originreviews2296 just as I wrote that it started artifacting again :( celebrated too early it seems, ran great for 2h but then crapped out again. Sending it in for repair now.

      2. Try again. I've fixed some GPUs before only at the second cook! :-)

A while ago I fixed somes gpu with the oven method. Now, i just bought a 2080ti with the same problem and i'll give it a try. Thanks for your video! I was only searching for the temps in the oven and your video is precisely everything i needed! Will update my comment tomorrow if that cooking was a succes! btw, 3 of my vrams have some brownish color on the top.. So if that doesn't work i'll probably buy some Samsung K4Z80325BC-HC14 chips and try to reball it. Oof! GPU's are like TVs, more its expensive, more they will break by thermal stress.

Btw there is major flaw on MSI RTX 2080Ti VENTUS Rev. 1.0 it doesn't have a proper VRAM cooling! There is thermal pads between the VRAMs itself and the front plate but no pads or paste between the front plate/heatsink. Well, this is the case for Rev. 1.0

Not a real good idea long term. It’s a risky reflow at best. It is not safe at all as you end up reflowing everything on the board.

Doing something like this, especially in Namibia can save you thousands, especially taking into account that these cards cost tens of thousands of dollars to buy IN Namibia. well done guys.

Airflow will increase the risk of pushing some tiny components and/or overheat them even at 383F . 8-11mins is okay without any airflow and if it still crashing, wigling the heatsink and overtight the screws on the backplate may help. Just dont overtight like crazy. Gl!

I'm having the same exact issue. I'm pondering give it a bake but from what I've read the pink scan lines might be more indicative of a memory failure. Specifically, failure of the Micron modules closest to the part where the card connects to the PCIe slot.
