It's not clean, for example part between 4:11 and 4:14 is too slow. Kirk plays 3 taps per section, while swan the pig plays just 2 taps per section.

This is garbage. You don’t play this song in alternative picking. The hardest part of playing blackened is downstroking the main riff.

@@mikem1006 It is most definitely not embarrassing for something that was recorded and posted in probably about ten minutes as an example, and definitely IS embarrassing to post a serious cover of a song, which likely took hours of recording several takes, editing etc., and STILL be riddled with mistakes (Of which I noticed several in this cover, besides the downpicking). He even intentionally plays wrong notes, the open A he plays during the main riff should obviously be an A#. How do you listen to a song, learn it with a wrong note like that, then keep playing it and not go "Hmm, this doesn't sound right"? Either he has no sense of pitch, or he's just lazy, can't be fucked to learn it the right way, and is using an open string to cheat so he can mute better or something, which would still be okay, if it was at least the right fuckin note, but it's not, and it's an earsore. Or he just fucked up that note a bunch of times.

I’m learning this at the moment and the picking hand is definitely the hardest part. I can fret all the (James) notes at full speed no problem, my right hand can’t keep up the pace and accuracy though. The riff patterns are pretty basic but sound amazing. It just goes to show how fantastic a rhythm player Hetfield is, nailing this shit in his twenties.

@@Gabingus69 I can give you the advice to not start with songs like this one because they can "cripple" your future technique. Start slow and when you learned to play relaxed then you can try it
@DML thank you! how should I work to increase the stamina of my picking hand? Following the instructions you laid out? Or do you have other suggestions in mind. I really want to be able to play Blackened and Creeping Death one day, full speed
@@Gabingus69 I would just start with the basic picking and alternate picking (this includes alternate picking across strings/string skipping). The way I increased my downpicking was that I put a metronome on a tempo I could downpick pretty relaxed for 5 min and increased it day by day. You have to be careful that you don't tense up while doing it otherwise you fuck up your arm. But I mean there are plenty of YT videos showing you several ways of improving downpicking (such as speed bursts). PS: Downpicking is easier while standing but not necessary to build up speed
When Kirk's solos were genuinely good and actually had some interesting flare to them
Kirk's best solos were rtl but even then, all his albums have been just picking the same techniques out of a hat. Kill em all and afja got it the worst

@Nemesis 86 Still, if we talk about their classic tunes and being the best in covering them, there is no way you can alternate pick the Blackened Main Riff and be the best. It sounds so weak alternate but so fucking brutal downpicking it.
If we talk about young prime James. Look at him Seattle 89 downpicking Battery, MoP and Blackenend at 120% speed. Its fucking godlike. The hardest part about playing those riffs is downpicking them SO fast and being 100% in time.

To all the guitar know-it-alls that claim metallica MUST BE played with downstrokes only: at the end of the day it's all about the sound, so anyone who can play alternate picking and make it sound like a decent cover of the original has all the right to do so. It is not a shortcut if it sounds the same. Actually to be fair, it only makes more sense if alternate picking is easier than all downstrokes as long as you produce a good sound.
I play this with downstrokes but I agree with you. But I'm heavy handed as fuck and it's way noticeable in the sound when I try to do alternate. I still alternate every now and then when my hand gets tired :P
The point is, it does dound better with downstrokes and making it sound "decent" by upstroking is definitely a shortcut

It's definitely not "all about the sound". It's about the sound, yes, but it's also about attitude.
Down-picking is overflowing with rebellious attitude. Metallica's obsession with it is no small part of what makes them so much different than the rest.
Not necessarily, if you play guitar you should know that the tone is different with all downstrokes compared to alternate picking

I have not listened to Metallica in so long. I saw the Master of Puppets tour in 86 with Ozzy and I loved Metallica even though they were so fucking loud! I lost quit a bit of my hearing from that show.
