It's pretty ridiculous how heavy of sound this guy is able to get with an SG, a badass playing style, a basic digital recording rig/software without any tubes whatsoever. I don't think I'm brave enough to try it though- I'm too much of a slave to my tubes. Hell.. tubes don't even make my playing sound as heavy as his lol.
This kind of tone isn't about tubes, it's about preamp gain, the right EQ and the skills to play the song properly.
