One of the reasons I love James’s guitar playing is that the guitar just looks like a part of his body. It’s so effortless even when he’s playing something difficult (and singing at the same time). In my personal opinion he is one of the greatest guitarists of all time

One thing to remember is that a true guitar virtuoso Alex Skolnick has repeatedly been in awe in interviews of James' live playing when he's seen them. Considers James a virtuoso although he rarely solos like you would usually classify a virtuoso as.

Ok, "Blackened" is awesome, so is "Harvester of Sorrow", and same thing for "One".
But when are they playing the OTHER songs from AJFA?
"Shortest Straw" got to be played like 7 times in the past ten years.
"The Frayed Ends" of Sanity were played only 12 or 13 times ever, all performance taking place in 2015.
"And Justice for All" hasn't been played in 9 years
All 3 other AJFA songs haven't been played in over 10 years, which means they're basically forgotten by the band, with a special mention for "To Live is To Die" who has only been performed once live in all of Metallica's carrer, and "Eye of the Beholder" who hasn't been played in 34 years...
Why is this album, of all of the 5 first classical album of their debut, is the most ignored by the band?

I remember reading an interview with (probably Lars) around the time the black album came out that described how the audience was clearly not having fun during some of the AJFA songs. I don't think they said which ones, but it was said that someone said "well we're never playing THAT song again!" after getting offstage. That makes sense to me for some of the longer songs. As a comparison, I saw Opeth years ago, and as much as I love the songs that I like by them, when they played a song I didn't like, it was 10 minutes of boredom for me. I can respect Metallica for wanting their audience to have fun at their shows. That said, Shortest Straw is fantastic and deserves more love.

@@381nm It was back in the days when the vast majority of the Thrash fans wanted some more basic and agressive stuffs and didn't want to bother with more technical songs and long songs, while the casual audience wasn't listening to Metallica yet (the Black Album would be the starting point of bringing this kind of audience to the shows). Actually, I kind of understand why during the Black Album tour they made the Justice Medley: just a way for them to synthesize 5 or 6 songs of the AFJA album in a 10 minute medley, preventing any boredom of this kind, though I hardly can see how you can get bored on an AFJA song, they're some of the most brutal they made! Aside for the more slowly paced one (Harvester of Sorrow & To Live is To Die) that are meant for headbang, it was mandatory mosh pit action for any of the other AFJA songs I had to witness in live!
Anyway, the time has changed now. We're not in the 80's. Metallica's public is way more diverse than it used to be, and even the most die hard thrash fans have aged and evolved. AJFA is one of their 5 first core classic album of the thrash era, and I can't see anyone nowadays complain about hearing live a song like Justice, Dyers Eve, Frayed Ends, Eye of the Beholder or Straw. I mean, any of these songs live would be a blast, and Metallica posting the video of these performance live would get them 1 million views without a problem!
