It’s rare you get to see a legend evolve in the flesh before their tale is written, stamped, and told. God given natural talent, endless practice, or a few trips to the crossroads I don’t know.... doesn’t really matter, but comparing him to Cash doesn’t quite capture his sound. One day when they say the name Colter Wall people will pause and know...This fella is on his way to becoming one of the greatest country singers ever.

its like The old Nighthawk by Waddie Mitchell, "I always did like that song, it takes me back to when I was young, memories come through my head of the times I have heard that ole song sung by voices, now long since dead." Colter sounds like the ole days but hes now!
Couldn’t of said it better. He, along with some other country artist right now are reviving the outlaw country music once again. I find this to be refreshing in an era where country music is over produced, cookie cut and dry. I agree with you, tho it’s easy to compare Colter to Cash I believe he is uniquely establishing himself as an independent artist. What a pleasure it is to be able to witness such talent.

I wasn’t into country music when Cash was alive. I missed all of Hank’s life. But this.. Colter Wall. The songs. The voice. The presentation and the pride in where he’s from... Saskatchewan of all places. I’m happy to say I’m witnessing this. As another comment said, one day the name “Colter Wall” will be said and heads will nod.. respect and smiles for what he did for music, and especially country / western music, will be poured. Thank you, Colter. Keep em comin.
He really transforms you in a way the legends did. Most of the genre today is hot garbage, but not Colter. He's legit talented.

@@waynethera2712 I’m from California, and before really finding Colter Wall, all the country music artists I loved were from Kentucky and Texas. It wasn’t a diss to Saskatchewan or Canada, just surprising to most in the US I feel.
A whole mans life in 5 minutes shows the beautiful simplicity of life in the old west.
This young man will be the biggest thing in country music, and you can take that to the bank.

It's hard to put my finger on it, but it's almost as if he's changed his style now. As much as I love his new stuff, I think I like his older sound more - his music back around Kate McCannon. I love the outlaw-ish look he had, and his deep haunting vocals. Not only has his get-up changed, but his voice has as well. He still has killer songs, and I love everything he puts out, but I just prefer his younger days.

@@ComedyBros5 In an interview not too long ago he was asked about his style changing and he responded that now he’s received formal vocal training hence the change. I believe he said something along the lines of “well I just learned to sing” and laughed. I agree though that I lean towards the old more guttural tone he had but am still loving this more polished sound

Raw talent. Colter has taken a path in country music that very few would ever think about doing. A true cowboy storyteller that I could only compare to the late great Marty Robbins. He shares a lot of similar characteristics of him and I love it. He will definitely go down in history as a legend.

I own a cattle ranch in Lampasas county. I LOVE this song!!! Such an amazing song sung by a talented guy. There is a long history of cattle ranches here. I am glad he did this song.

thanks to Colter Wall for coming along and basically shattering my prejudice about country music single-handedly. turns out I didn't hate country, I just hated the manufactured pop acts they were shoving down my throat at every car dealership and football game in America... turns out I just needed to hear some real Western outlaw music from an actual singer-songwriter who cares more about his craft than his image to realize that country still has a soul underneath all the cookie-cutter-corporate-cowshit...

I have driven from Lampasas, Texas to Great Falls, Montana a number of times and have been all throughout most of the west. I have also driven the route through Oklahoma and Kansas to get there. His descriptions of the places paint a picture but having seen these places personally makes this an incredibly moving song for me because I can close my eyes and see those landscapes in my mind's eye. I didnt think Colter Wall could top "Cypress Hills" but he did with this one.

Actually , Ian is a folk singer, and my intent was not to take anything away from him.

I am listening to this song about 20 miles from Lampasas. It's weird hearing him reference a place so close to my home, but it is a nice surprise. Great song!
What a difference from now and back when he did the original 16 recordings. Still a great singer, player, and performer. But he is much more refined now. Though I miss that trouble searching smirk he had. Like he's a different guy in that respect.

He was seemingly not singing very technically and you can see him strain to get that sound he had before. He's for sure more technical now, but of course he had that early sound. I wonder if he can still do that if he wants to - would be cool to see him sing one of his old songs now live.

Hi , nice video! I don't know if this was mentioned in all the comments but Bob Fudge was a real person and a real cowboy. My great grandfather Denby worked with him on the XIT cattle drives from Texas to Montana in the early turn of the century. They ended up working for the Hatchet Creek Ranch in Fallon , MT and Alden Denby started a Homestead Act homestead there. I remember stories about Bob Fudge and other cowboys and homesteaders in the Terry and Fallon Montana region where XIT cattle were brought

There’s a spiritual core to Wall’s music conspicuously absent from not only popular country music but popular music in general today, which is, I think, one reason why it feels so healing and so necessary. He is a musical poet and storyteller whose beautiful, haunting voice gives expression to, casts light on, the deepest, most silent parts of ourselves.,
The visual ending to this is just a tear jerker. I envision the 1950s with an 80yo man driving his grand kids through Yellowstone, thinking back to when he was in his teens/20s driving cattle across those same hills...we will all have that feeling one day.

I'm 33 years old, and Colter Wall has been the first country music artists I've found interesting. I can't get enough of him. "Codeine Dreams" and "Living on the Sand" are some of the most relatable songs I've heard in years.
