Fun fact: Buffalo AirwayS C47 WWII era plane operated out of Yellowknife NWT is named after this song, which is by the Canadian Country Legend Ian Tyson about blowing a summers wages from the logging camps in the beer parlours on Main Street in Vancouver.
Western AF introduced me to Colter Wall awhile back and I'm so proud of the good ole Canadian boy getting the love and recognition. Being an Asian woman, raised in Toronto, who just happens to randomly love country music, I always felt out of place. Country music from all over the world is getting its moment in the sun!
I’ve grown up moving across the north eastern states and never ran into any real country people but the moving around made me relate to these rambling country songs
I'm from the south and while the "country" people my age are listening to the crap on the radio I'm listening to my dead country heros and people like Colter Wall.
Dude I thought the crap on the radio was what country music was and I just found this and was like "ohhh this is the real country" yeah this is good as fuck
I heard Ian Tyson singing this while riding in a 76 Dodge Power Wagon, (4wd natch) hauling a load of pipe from Lake County, OR, aka "the big empty", to Pocatello, Idaho to quote a Valley Irrigation System for a cattle rancher. If you can picture it you're as old as I am. Lol. My first love and husband was driving. He pulled over cause I wanted to hear the song over the sound of the pick up and pipe trailer rack on the roof. We had just crossed Fandango Pass. It's one of my all time favorite memories of a time in my life that's gone like summer wages. When I ran across it on RUclips and heard Colter Wall's voice and that AMAZING steel guitar break, yes sir, I was transported. Dropped my horses hoof, sat down on the barn floor and cried like a baby. Not much brings a tear to my eyes having already mourned two husbands and my only child. Someone tell Mr Wall to cut it out, he's scaring my horse!😢❤🤗🏇 child.
I grew up around true working cowboys in the badlands of NM and West TX. While I chose a different career path the characters I met, worked with and admired as a young man; their stories, music, art and culture left a mark on me. For no good reason, I was always sceptical about cowboy culture north of the CO/NM state line. I found out about Colter Wall about the same time my daughter started attending college in Montana. I've made the trip to see her several times by driving through Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana while listening to Colter. I get it now. He is definitely an old soul and expanded my narrow mind. Hopefully one day I'll get to explore the Canadian cattle country of his youth that left such a deep trail in his mind. Well done young man.
Thanks for the thought provoking comment 👍. I’m from Vancouver but have visited Canadian Cattle country many times. It’s vast and dry and barren. Hard folk living there. Even Vancouver was just a watering hole for all the timber workers looking for booze and company , up until the 80s! This song was originally composed by a legendary Canadian country musician in his own right. Ian Tyson I believe? Take care
Ol Colt might as well be 200 years old when he opens his mouth, and the cowboy ghosts of the past come rearing to life right in front of you. I wonder if when Colter would cry as a baby, it just sounded like an average adult man screaming. Edit: *WesternAF,* would you please consider bringing in Vincent Neil Emerson for a song? He's a criminally underrated working country artist that I'd love to see y'all bring in for a nice session, instead of the live recording y'all did a few months back. Thanks for the great work you guys do!
My daughter and her boyfriend are fans, that’s how I ended up here, but I’m glad I made it. I’m a little late to the party, but I’m here now, and I’m glad I got here!
Been listening to all kinds of music for a while now. This may be my favorite performance I’ve ever heard in my life. Have not stopped listening to this on repeat for weeks now.
Colter makes me absolutely proud AS HELL to be a busted up tattooed lineman/ranch hand from Alberta Canada. Best pickup truck tailgate beer song ever, Ian Tyson would be proud! The entire western Canada is anyway!
CowpokeCannoneer I would like to hear him do “Someday Soon” all three are great tunes, if you like the western songs give Jerry Jeff Walker’s “Rodeo Wind” or Red Stegall’s “Dawson LeGate” a listen, I think colter would do those well too.
man, I watch this once a week at least. such true music. I know he didn't write the song, but he channels it through his soul in the modern style we needed to hear it in.
Colter...YOUR version of this song...is forevermore the standard. It is superbly arranged...with minimal instrumentation. Your voice is quintessential "cowboy"...like coyotes and hot dust. Your pine...is sublime.
Our son introduced Colter Wall's music to us Jan 2019 after his 2nd year of fire fighting in BC stationed out of the Kootneys . Bought us tickets for an Xmas gift in Vancouver with other fire fighters and their parents. I think it's safe to say the entire 'Rocky Mountain Fire Fighting' squad think his got a special gift worth sharing here in BC.
Colter makes me really miss things I didn't knew I wanted. Chords and Lyrics below folks, have fun. On Ultimate Guitar by tomorrow as well. @Tanja Maria: Hiya! I'd like to recommend Sam Peckinpah's "Junior Bonner" (1972), starring Steve McQueen and Robert Preston. It was Steve's favorite film.
Unbelievable. His voice is haunting yet familiar, so aged with a beaten down tone usually only heard by people in thier later years. If your in NYS let's jam!
Truly amazing to see Colter’s evolution , from the brewery sessions to the newer songs , I know not all people enjoy Colter’s new tonality , but damn if this isn’t the best evolution... years will pass and his music will only get better .
Love this tune. My favorite version is JD Crowe and the New South Band with Tony Rice on guitar and vocals, Ricky Scaggs on mandolin and fiddle, JD on banjo (of course) and Jerry Douglas on dobro... can't remember bass player off the top of my head. Outstanding bluegrass version of the tune, but Colter does a bang-up job here.
When I was a teen(around 17sh) I never really liked this guy. Now i'm absolutely addicted. I used to think his voice was too low and sounded weird. As I got older I started loving him and his bassie voice. his new singing style on his new album got me extra hooked! Seems likes he's found the voice that fits him perfectly. I'm now 22 and i love all his music. Colter has to be on my daily playlist.
How he suddenly changed his voice I don't understand, and also grown his beard. I thought for a second it was another singer with the same name. I think this is the best version of Colter Wall I've yet heard.
That's where you're wrong. Ian Tyson is an absolute legend, he deserves respect and appreciation for his work- way more than he gets. And as much as I love Colter, the original is better :)

My only problem with Colter Wall covers, is he does them soo good, that it’s then hard to listen to the original the same
Same the only song i still think is slightly better than colters version is night herd song by ramblin jack eliot
He does big dave so good i cant listen to the original
For someone like me who got into country music by hearing Colter Wall these covers of classic country songs help me explore the genre
Please do listen to tony rices cover of this song. It's beautifullly done too
Ian Tyson does it far better than he does.
My Dad first introduced Colter Wall to me about two years ago. He was fighting cancer. We would listen together....makes my heart ache now
I'm sorry for your loss, Chris. May your dad's memory live on in you and in the music you shared.
Time will help. It won’t fix anything but it will dull the pain.
I pray for your heartache
I've been, through that three times. Dad, wife, and Mom. But Mom, didn't have cancer ☺️.
Head up brother
That moment when a Canadian is more country than anything coming out of Nashville, TN
A Canadian singing a cover of another Canadian. There's some true cowboys north of the border
As a Nashvillian I can assure you no one is more disappointed in the state of country music than us.
Them high plains boys are pretty country haha it takes a hard person to exist out there.
Almost all of Canada is pure country. Nashville is for sellouts
This isn't country music, it's COWBOY MUSIC, son
For the love of god, release this as a single
Amen
I think Western AF puts some stuff out there, think I've seen a playlist on Spotify. Do some searchin you might find it somewhere.
And dont add a thing. Just like this.
“Northern Montana.... Funny man”
Good people
*clears throat*
Classic
“Northern Montana... Funny man” should also be on a shirt, I’d definitely buy it 🤷🏼♀️
That T-Shirt needs to have a photo of Colter looking very unamused

Are we just gonna ignore the slide player’s magic?
No we ain’t! I turn it up even louder when it’s his turn.
NO WAY WE WILL NOT
But when Colter wall said "go ahead bud" That's worth mentioning
And “yes sir” was right on time
Not a chance!
Is it just me, or does this song get even better after the 500th listen?!
Yep -it does !
Best voice in real country music
It really is just ridiculous. Truly something to behold.

Never hit seventeen when you play against the dealer
For you know that the odds won't ride with you
And never leave your woman alone, when your friends are out to steal her
She'll be gambled and gone like summer wages

All the big stands of timber, waiting for the falling
And the hookers standing watchfully , waiting by the door

Through the gray fog bound straits, where the cedars stand a watching
I'll be far off and gone like summer wages
