Every note he’s hitting, every string he’s picking without lookin half the time, and not muting it is insane. I could never remember the notes or chords to play this.
I'm from Rolling Fork Mississippi...grew up off Highway 61. The kind of blues that I play and grew up hearing around me at the old juke joints, utilizes this style of picking. An old friend and guitar picking friend used to call my style of picking "thump blues"....playing the bass lines while playing within the chord structure....absolutely love this
None of that is really written out. It's basically just feel around his vocals... that's why these songs change a bit over the years of playing them. This guy is a genius... seriously... but it's really not a difficult song to play at all.
That was my exact thought the first time I heard & saw Colter. Where in the sam hell is this kid hiding that voice?! After listening to a couple dozen more songs, I realized that Colter’s physical being is late 20th century, but his voice & soul have wandered the plains and ranges of North America for at least 100 years more.
More delta acoustic blues than country... this is really just a spin on Robert Johnson's ol' Crossroads story... even down to Highway 61 mentioned. Keep in mind, that there are points of overlap with country, blues and bluesgrass... this is one of those times. But to me? This is pure acoustic blues. To you it's 'country'... the secret is... we're both right. I'm not calling Colter a rip off (love this dude's music)... this is his own song, his own style, but it borrows heavily from some VERY old blues. It's all good, I bet Robert Johnson would love this song. But the old crossroads trope in music (And more covers of this song that I can count... Clapton has done a few completely different covers of this classic over the years and decades) all trace back to here. Robert Johnson. ruclips.net/video/GsB_cGdgPTo/видео.html

Shortly after picking yourself of the floor when you hear that voice for the first time, you notice that he's a dammed fine picker too. His timing and phrasing are brutally gorgeous
It's like someone poured the musical DNA of Johnny Cash and Tennessee Ernie Ford into the same young man / old soul! I’m pretty sure this song is about Robert Johnson, a guitarist who people say sold his soul to the devil even being one of the first to do so. He went to the cross roads of Highways 49 and 61 in Clarksdale, Mississippi referencing the lyrics “I saw him driving down the 61 in early July.” One of Robert Johnson’s songs “Me and the devil blues” is supposedly one of the songs the devil played to Robert when he gave his guitar to the devil and the line “I know you I know you, young man I know you by the state of your hands You're a six string picker Just as I... I am” and “Let me learn you somethin': I know a few turns to make all the girls dance" is somewhat relating to that I’m not sure if this is 100% about him but it seems to be
Dude, I recognized the ''story'', but couldn't figure out from where. But once I read the name , I realized. I am almost certain that it is about Robert Johnson.
You nailed it Dude, an early 30's model Caddy The cross roads is at 61 and 49 on the Delta right outside Clarksdale. It's said that 61 was still gravel and 49 dirt when Johnson made his deal. Not sure how long ago it was now , (Peyton Manning was still playing for the University of Tennessee ) but I built a two lane overpass both North and South bound over Robert Johnson's Crossroads. Didn't make any deals while I was there.
this my friends is an elite singer-songwriter with the just the right amount of 6-string pizazz with a rough-edged string buzz and stomping that simple bass drum - pure and uncut, darkly cool music. GREAT SONG!

Dear Josh Sizemore: I’d been trying so hard to decipher the “Let me learn you somethin’” line in the first chorus! You have my thanks. Sincerely, Hippie Joe
Are you sure it’s not “tunes”? “I know a few tunes to make all the girls dance.” Idk if it’s correct, but it seems like it should be. I appreciate the time it takes to post the lyrics, especially when there may be a few words that are hard to decipher. I’m glad you got the Ole Miss part right. Another poster put Old Myth. The only other part is the ending. It sounds like he sings “eternal light”, but I’d bet it’s “eternal life”, and the way Colter sings it makes it sound like “light.” The price was his soul (eternal life).

Probably the family of Kate McCannon
Fuck em!
Can't believe that voice comes out of him... I love his music
Haunting! Dark country music is amazing.

White as a cotton field
And sharp as a knife
I heard him howlin' as he passed me by
And he said
I know you I know you, young man
I know you by the state of your hands
You're a six string picker
Just as I... I am
Let me learn ya some I know a few turns to make all the girls dance

Thank you!!!!
Thank you sir
You're the lyric guy now compadre
Thank u chap
This kid is literally mesmerizing and all he needs is a guitar and his voice…certainly gives other artists a run for their money
Colter is a unique blend of some great guitar players, but he’s truly one of a kind. I’m amazed when it comes to knowing when to pause (rest) and when to play. I have tremendous respect for him . He’s a great story teller.

nah this like the sequel to Devil Went Down to Georgia where the devil actually convinced a Canadian to sell his soul for rad guitar skills

Sounds like this, sounds like that. What this man sounds like is Colter Wall; and that's Aplenty !
This is like hearing Nick Offerman's voice out of Michael Cera's mouth
LOL this is the winning comment, absolutely hands down
He sounds like a combination of Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings.
Babahahahha
Strumming the acoustic
Slapping the bass
And singing the soul
This is raw music at its finest.
He really knows how to powerfully do subtle inflections, both as a guitarist and as a vocalist. Less is more, especially when the right magical drops of voice and instrument are sparsely and inspirationally blended. This kid is no doubt the REAL deal!!!
Watching this with my neighbor's chihuahua and it turned into a wolf before my eyes!
One of the rare artists these days where their music is actually better live than it is on recorded albums.
My 4 year old was watching this with me and started laughing. Then he said "That kid has a mustache like a grown-up!" and started laughing again.

A Million times better than 95 percent of anything else on country radio!!
I’d say better than 100% of it. Show me anything on the radio that’s better. Luke combs is the best they’ll play on FM country radio. And he’s relatively criny pop country. A little less cringy than the rest though
Drew Harrison agreed! I was just trying to be nice allowing the 5 percent! The only thing that I hear on major country radio that is even close is Chris Stapleton. I still Like Colter more!
Chris Stapleton is REALLy good but NOT better!
The teachers used to ask him if they can go to the bathroom
We are witnessing an evolution here. I think his artistry will grow and I can't wait to see him develop and hone his talent. Really good sound!
His beard did grow up
Saskatchewan greatness right there! Sure makes this old Canadian picker proud. Stay true to your heart Colter. You’re amazing!
I am almost certain that it is about Robert Johnson.
he says in an early interview that it was his inspiration
You nailed it Dude, an early 30's model Caddy The cross roads is at 61 and 49 on the Delta right outside Clarksdale. It's said that 61 was still gravel and 49 dirt when Johnson made his deal. Not sure how long ago it was now , (Peyton Manning was still playing for the University of Tennessee ) but I built a two lane overpass both North and South bound over Robert Johnson's Crossroads. Didn't make any deals while I was there.
I thought it was his own take of the devil went to Georgia kinda thing.
this my friends is an elite singer-songwriter with the just the right amount of 6-string pizazz with a rough-edged string buzz and stomping that simple bass drum - pure and uncut, darkly cool music. GREAT SONG!
Prolly will never hear this man on the radio -- too good for mainstream.
this song got me into country music a couple years ago and its all I listen to now, he is truly amazing in my opinion
Agree
Dang this young man sounds like he’s lived a thousand lives. So unique.
My uncle accidentally ran into him and Tyler Childers at a bar and he got a free backstage pass and they played a song for him😂lucky bastard
Really wish someone’d put this version on Spotify. by far my favorite version of the song
"He drove a series 10 Cadillac and wore a cigar on his lip" sends shivers down my spine
Been listening to over a year and a half now and although im happy Rogan spotlighted him... it never should have taken this long for Colter to blow up.

This is how all country should sound.
I would actually listen to country if it all sounded like this.
If it all sounds the same then it is no longer special. Country needs variety or you get what we have now
The blues in this guys music is incredible. The fact that he was 22 when recorded it blows my mind. Can’t believe I’m just discovering him now.
