That was not the voice I expected to come out of that body. This is the most shocked I have been at the first time hearing an artist that I can remember. A very unique country artist named Colter Wall and his song The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie. Definitely not the cookie cutter approach. Thank you Steph for suggesting this artist, he has been added to my play list. If you enjoy our video please like the video and subscribe to our channel. If you have any suggestions for artists you would like to see us react to, please post it in the comments section.
Here is a link to the actually video we just reacted to Colter Wall - The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie

I heard somebody say that, "Colter Wall sounds like he rolled up Johnny Cash's ashes and then smoked them!" I thought it was very accurate
Great song retelling the legend of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the Devil at The Crossroads. Legend is that The Crossroad are in the North Mississippi Delta area. The 61 he refers to is Highway 61 that runs from Memphis to New Orleans. It’s also called The Blues Trail.
Thought if felt like Robert Johnson. We have added some RJ and Son House to the list. Thanks indiandeuce.
I could easily hear Johnny Cash sing this song. The simplicity of the guitar picking with the minimal drum to keep time, you can picture him sitting AT the crossroads while singing this.
Hwy 61 goes from the gulf to Canada, a great travel road to feel real America.
🎉🎉❤
The Series 10 Cadillac referenced was a real but short lived car produced from 1934 to 1935. Assuming the Devil doesn't drive a used car, this puts timeframe of the story just a year before Robert Johnson's first known recording session in 1936.
He's 19 in this video, he also plays his own kick drum while playing guitar and singing
He’s matured a lot in his vocals. Smoothed it out. It just gets better and better.
Fun fact. His father is the former premier of Saskatchewan, Brad Wall. I always love to see a Saskatchewan boy make good!
So he's met his share of crooked suit and tie guys then.
I have been listening to colter a while now and its good to see he gets the recognition he deserves, i think he is 27, 21 when he preformed this song
That is awesome and Steph has more of his on the list for us!
Pretty sure he was 19 when he did this
He was 19
Glad there are still real artists springing from the world of country and blues. So seemingly rare.
Give Corb Lund a listen, great country artist who is keeping it country.
You gotta introduce him to Kate Mckinnon by Colter Wall! Great story telling and obviously great music/vocals as well! Think he would love it
Kate McKinnon? The comedian? lol
Colter's dad is Bradley John Wall (14th premier of Saskatchewan).
Colter is as western as a worn out pair of boots. When he isn’t performing, he is on horse back. Love this young man! 🤘🏻
Interesting. This is more delta blues vs. western.
The 61 is in reference to Highway 61 in Western Mississippi. Yazoo City area. This is where Robert Johnson met at the crossroads and sold his soul in the legend.
Jason Momoa actually introduced me to Colter’s music and I’ve never looked back since! Great artist. This is my favourite song of his along with Kate McCannon, sleeping on the black top, motorcycle
Stephanie listens to GREAT music.
I knew his jaw was gonna hit the floor when he started singing! 😂😂😂😂😂 GREAT VIDEO!!
I saw him at Billy Bob's! He sounds just as good live and puts on a great show!
That is incredible and you are so lucky. If he comes down by Florida way, we will be going...you can bet on it :)
He’s from my city Swift Current in Saskatchewan, Canada. He mentions Speedy Creek in a song which is what people call our city. And he mentions the Number 4 highway which also goes through Swift Current.
Just looked up the town Sam and it looks very scenic with the older bridges and farming silos.
Speedy creek take a peek
Colter Wall, a good ol' Sasky boy. His dad (Brad Wall) was premier of our province (Saskatchewan).
I looked up the town and have a different view in my head now. Good ole fashioned small town style farm country, at least the images I saw. It's beautiful.
Best speech Brad Wall ever made was making the announcement for the new stadium. A politician promising to do something that actually got done. I wonder if the kid has played there, he must have.
Absolutely love Colter Wall , Kate McCannon by him is my absolute favorite. Love watching you guys.❤
I saw him at a small venue in Sturgis, South Dakota a few years ago and he blew my goddamn mind!
That must have been cool as all get out Taylor. When he comes this way we are going to see him for sure.
He was NINETEEN, yes, when he came out with this. Try "Caroline", please. You will have tears in your eyes, guaranteed
Huge colter wall fan! Have all he albums on vinyl.
He sells vinyl as well? How cool is that! Thanks for that tid bit Thurston.
I swear every girl just falls in love with Colter when they hear his voice.
One vocal teacher reacted on RUclips and I swear she had an orgasm listening to him sing
I still can’t believe colter wall is Canadian😂
He’s also a real working cowboy in Saskatchewan. Rumor has it he turned down a duet because he was working cattle in the wilderness
A good ol' Saskatchewan boy
When I first HEARD Colter Wall, I thought this was an older fella with that weathered voice. Then, I looked him up and was wait what...
The third name that always gets mentioned is Charley Crockett, with Colter and Tyler. I loved Welcome to Hard Times, Midnight Run (more than the James Hand original), and Jamestown Ferry. You might also like Kassi Valazza's Johnny My Dear, and Shawn James's various versions of Through the Valley (his latest at The Old Church is astounding.)
Seirra Ferrel is great too!
Always awesome to see more reactions to colter grew up in sask with him and always happy to see his reach expanding
When I first heard colter wall I assumed he was an older guy. I didn’t see a picture for awhile after hearing him and I was picturing an old bald dude with a big beard and bigger gut. Imagine my surprise when I saw a young skinny guy only a little older than myself
Right there with ya buddy. It's a little surreal when you first hear the voice with the person.
I am SO GLAD that you talked about Robert Johnson. Lots of people don’t know about it, much less in more modern times. Great reaction!!
Neil Young was from Manitoba, Colter is from Saskatchewan ... when you have winters that rip from September till May ... you sit inside and practice, practice, practice.
Bachman and Cummings weren't too shabby as songwriters. Like Colter, Neil Young had a famous dad too.
lot of great country singers out there that get little to no radio play. colter and tyler imo are at the top of that list. tyler childers should be the next artist you discover
Just did Tyler Childers last night and will be posting in a day or two.
Add Billy Strings and you will have all the young guys
He mentions Ol' Miss in an earlier stanza in the song so there is a Robert Johnson reference in the song. Great reaction.
I had heard that he was 19 when he did the brewery session.
That is amazing Donald. He is truly a rare talent.
Write this when he was 19. Was 21 here
Best way I have to describe this guys music.... “This is what I listen to when when I’m waiting for the dust to settle around me.”
This performance can best be described as .... captivating ...
Hope that y'all do some more colter vids. So many reaction channels do this song and NO MORE. I love this song, but his music and his voice evolved so much since then. Love ol brother Colter!
We have more Colter on the list. Do you have a particular song you would like us to do?
@Flickering Box "Cowpoke" is a great song that I'd say is kind of on the opposite end of Colter's style and range. And "Bald Butte" is my favorite tune of his, so I've got to recommend that, too.
@@flickeringboxofficial He went more 50's country in Western Swing and Waltzes, with a lot of covers from that time. But his latest, Cypress Hills and the Big Country, finds a happy medium!
Saw colter wall in a venue of maybe 300-500 people in January of 2020 right before Covid times, he’s amazing
Soooo lucky. That had to be awesome with such a close up show like that. Burch said we are going next time he comes to town so fingers crossed. Thank you for sharing Alex
I saw him in Vancouver and actor Jason Momoa was in the front row
kate mccannon and sleeping on the blacktop are a must for the next ones, subbed waiting on those, cheers =)
On the list now Patrick, thank you. I have another CW song, Bob Fudge on the list for Burch to react to.
Would love for him to hear Cowpoke from Western AF from Colter. Not an original, but it really shows how much his voice has matured. He is very critical of these early recordings at the brewery.
Thank you sixtyfore, just added it to the list!
Your face when he started singing was definitely how I felt listening to him the first time.
Lol the look on your face when he sang. Subscribed! Haha
That was sooooooo unexpected. Love those moments Seth, too much fun.
I believe in that video, Colter is 21 or 22. You're definitely gonna have to show him Kate McCannon and Bob Fudge!!! An amazing Murder Ballot and a great storytelling of the old West cattle country. Colter is Plains music, while on the other side of the coin, Tyler is Appalachian music.
I'm on it Morgan, already lined up Bob Fudge for him...it's on the list. Thank you!
Bob fudge is actually an Ian Tyson tune.
Saw him at Billy Bobs in Ft Worth, INCREDIBLE
Loved the reaction 👍🏻🙂
Glad you loved it IF.
The best part is the intentional slight out of tuned guitar it gives this already diminished feel a more eerie tone ❤
Love the channel! Shakey Graves - roll the bones. hes also unique, plays a double kick peddle! Keep up the good work!
Love Sleeping on the Blacktop! ❤ Yeah I think it’s Robert Johnson on Hwy 61 at the crossroads!
It felt like RJ's story.
also shakey graves on the audio tree sessiones would be awesome, you guys rock
You are very kind Patrick and I put Shakey Graves on the on the list!
@@flickeringboxofficial I'll second that. Built to Roam and more so Roll The Bones, his Audiotree sessions, will blow your mind.
Colter wall was 19 when he performed this song
I believe he was 21 in this, and is 27 now.
I haven't looked into Colter Wall having just heard of him recently. Looks like he is doing a little Red Dirt tour well he's following similar tours to what a lot of red dirt artists do. Even though a lot of Red Dirt artists can just tour Texas and build a nice life and career for themselves. He isn't a red dirt artist though, he could succeed on the circuit pretty easily. Texas even has their own billboard for little independent/ local country scene. Colter style is Country Blues/Folk. It's pretty amazing for a Canadian. Pretty amazing artist in general. I have sung my entire life. Country, Rock, and Metal. I love everything about this dude's sound. He's playing 45 miles from me on Feb 16th.
I love his sound as well. I am a big fan of pre-ww2 delta blues and he really fits that fell. Thanks NJ
He was 21 here, wrote this song when he was 19
were you thinking about "the ride" by David Allan Coe or "Midnight in Montgomery" by Allan Jackson? this song always reminds me of those
I seen him in a bar in Charleston WV years ago. Didn't have a clue and hearing him live I had the exact initial reaction you did when I heard that voice
*I SAW him....
I hate over produced country music. This guy is a breath of fresh air with an original persona. I hope the industry doesn’t get a hold of him and ruin him.
He's 28 as of now. he was 20 when he released this song with his first album
When he recorded this he was 19 years olf 😳
Outlaw music will never die.
he was 19 in this video.
That is amazing Lawrence.
no he doesn't write all his own music. certainly he is a solid lyricist but his covers are plentiful and excellent. cowpoke, big iron, bob fudge and a dozen more...his takes on them is pure talent
It is a reference to Robert Johnson....He is retelling the tell. Colter is a real cowboy. When he is not playing music his wrangling cows in Canada.
Thank you Old Grizz, I thought so. That kid is something else, can't wait to do more of his songs.
Harmonica player Adam Gussow has a really nice one man band version of Crossroad Blues. I've always love the crossroads blues mythology. I've actually got my own song in that genre, a sort of harmonica oriented retelling of it from the devil's perspective. The harp player wins, and gets the devil sings, "He demanded my whole kingdom, and a harp of gold... but I got me the recording rights... that's why this job never gets old". :)
I have newly discovered your channel and have just started to follow y'all. I went back to your earlier videos trying to see more of your stuff and I'm just curious how you both know each other. None of my business l, just being curious.
Love it!
Thanks Zachary!
His voice honestly reminds me of Johnny Cash. I liked this reaction vid
In all honesty you’d have to show him either cowpoke, Kate McCannon or especially Bob Fudge all songs Colter Wall that I absolutely love and never gets old for me. Also could show him Frauline and introduce him to Tyler Childers if ya haven’t already.
I totally felt her vibe while she reacted to this!
It's funny because when we watched the video back...I didn't realize that I was lip syncing so much. Think it's obvious now to everyone that I am a fan :) Just glad Burch liked it. Thanks OC
@flickeringbox9509 colter has that effect on me as well. His ability to sing with a chill confidence is something that almost forces you to live the story he is telling. You should have him listen to Kate McCannon and Sleeping On The Blacktop.
Love you guys!
Sounds even better with his more natural voice, you could always see how much he had to strain to get that deep in the early days. Cowpoke or Big Iron, (both old covers,) show his real voice better
The song was written from Robert Johnson’s story per Colten himself
You've got to check out Ian Noe. Brilliant Americana/Folk singer from Kentucky. His songs Methhead, Letter to Madeleine, and Appalachia Haze are some of my favorites but just about all of his stuff is fantastic.
Absolutely Lewis and thank you for the recommendation. Added to the list. This is the great thing about doing this, introduced to so much new underground music or at least artist that we didn't know about.
Shannon curfman has a pretty cool song about the crossroads called Playing With Fire.
A great artist who should listen to is Shakey Graves. Start with Roll the Bones in the studio live and go through his catalog, you won’t be disappointed
Great choice of an artist and song. Obviously your first guess avoid the crossroads was right.
What do you mean "he's Canadian believe it or not" Canada has some really great artiest.
blessings!
I'm a huge Eric Clapton fan, so the Cream version of Crossroads has been one of my favorites since I was in grade school.
Colter Wall is the star child of all the classic country mfrs. Love him.
There is also a documentary about Robert Johnson on netflix if you haven't seen it yet. Gives a great view about his life and how he lost his life before he really got famous. I really enjoyed it. Great video :)
Perfect! I have not seen it so we will ad it to our movie list that we will be reacting to. Thank you Warren!
He was 19 when this was recorded in 2018.
Possibly 2017.
Cross roads is real I live about a hour drive north. Been there creepy as hell
You guys should do a video on Christopher Denny. NOBODY has done a reaction video on him yet. He seems to be an unknown gem. I'd recommend either "ride on" or "a million little thoughts.
I think he (Colter Wall) actually mentioned in an interview that this song is actually about Robert Johnson
enjoy your reactions, what did you mean by "Canadian artist believe it or not"?
Ever heard of Homefree? Their cover of "man of constant sorrow" was the first thing I heard from them. They're an acapella group and their bass singer's voice is unreal sounding. Deeper than this dudes even
Also, it looks like he is standing infront of a kickdrum and using his heel to hit those bass drum bonks all on his own in this video
I have not heard of Homefree but will check them out, thanks Switch
@@flickeringboxofficial I expect that sooner or later you will get suggestions for the three a Capella groups that most consider to be the best: Home Free, Pentatonix, and Voiceplay. Each is different, each has a large catalog of covers and originals, and each will astound you with their talent. I don't believe you can go wrong with anything you choose. Many of the members of each group also do solo performances and guest appearances with the other two groups and with others.
You should listen to Jake Kohn Frostbite. He was 16 during his video. Crazy low voice
Great 🇨🇦 artistry
There is a 1986 movie called Crossroads which plays off that story.
Yes, Robert Johnson at the crossroads is what he's talking about. And his voice is very different on some of his material; a much more old school country sound.
19 when this was recorded
Check out The Dead South, they were featured on one of Colter’s original album (Johnny Boy’s Bones) Imaginary Appalachia.
Thank you Fergus, putting them on the list!
“In Hell I’ll Be In Good Company” is the most popular song BUT “Banjo Odyssey” is the funniest (it SOUNDS horrid but it’s really a joke, DON’T drink while listening). The also did a double album of covers, my favorites are “You Are My Sunshine” and “Chop Suey” (yup, System of a Down).
He was 19 when that was recorded
Colter Wall is currently 27, I think he was in his early 20s at the time of that video, though.
I promise this guy has listened to his share of Tom Waits. Same vibe, gravel voiced Waits
This is the story of blues man Robert Johnson who was rumored to have sold his soul at the crossroads of Mississippi to be able to play the guitar as well as he did.
He is awesome
Give Lincoln Durham a try
Wow, lmao
Still waiting for the follow up videos 😊.
He was 22 when he wrote that
WOW so Bluesy, You guys should check out Chris Stapleton , Tennessee WHISKEY or Cold
