Love how the song slows when he discovers her with the other guy. Then the music builds and you can feel the anger build in him as well. The music helps tell the story too.
When you want to circle back to colter wall again... sleeping on the black top. If you like his imagery in these songs. It’s pure poetry in “Sleeping on the blacktop”
The dude is in his early 20’s, and sounds like he’s lived a whole long life in the old west. How does a guy that young got the mind for those lyrics??!! Nobody sounds like him, ever. And prolly never will . 💯
That first line will always give me goosebumps: “Well the raven is a wicked bird, his wings are black as sin; and he floats outside my prison window, mocking those within”
Such a good opener! reminds me of, and could be a homage to, the bon iver line on re:stacks ‘There's a black crow sitting across from me His wiry legs are crossed He is dangling my keys, he even fakes a toss’
Could also be a nod to Edgar Allan Poe in The Raven. Also a talking raven and a dead loved one. There's a rendition of the poem on here that's as stupendous as this song.
I love the subtlety of saying “I put three rounds into Kate Mcannon” followed by the build up of the guitar intensity leading to three loud consecutive strums
I thought it was a cool touch that after he said “I put three rounds in Kate McCannon” he does three strong kick drum beats in quick succession as if to represent the three gun shots.
Ha that’s awesome you mention that cause that’s what I tell everyone too. That little detail. Also in the studio recording he gets real quiet and the music builds up until he says ‘I put 3 rounds...’showing his mind is stirring and he’s getting more and more pissed. And my last name is also Wall so that’s an added cool factor.
I'm not hearing what your saying. He does 3 hard strums on the guitar. Is that what you mean? Or do you mean the 4 kicks he does like 30 seconds later?
I love the fact that you love Colters story telling and nuances as much as I do. The proper language and guitar sound and tonal variations paint a visual that most songs only wish they could.

The fact that he is ready to move foward and make her an honest women 4. In tangent to his pay he saved she is worth enough to save a quarter of his pay and 5 tells the reason as to why all the rage built up when he seen her with someone at the place they fell in love

"my darling angel's not in sight" and at "I found her with some other lover" my heart string were pulled in the same way his guitar strings were, like the lingering notes were drawn out to let the melancholy lyrics set in. Beautiful.
I love the way the intensity of his guitars playing swells in intensity in the pause between “founder her with some other lover” and “so I put three rounds into Kate McCannon”. To me, it’s like feeling the rage build inside him as he sees it. Also, there’s a point in the outro when he hits the kick drum three times. To me, that felt like a subtle nod to the shots. Colter Wall tells just as much of a story with his playing as he does with his lyrics.

I loved his use of dynamics as part of the storytelling, strumming muted strings or doing simple picking then ramping it up to full strums. Gives it a great sense of direction musically to help propel the lyrics further.

This song is great with the band behind him too. It just really has some great background sound. Seeing your reactions to him is so awesome. Takes me back to when I first heard him. See him live if you can, amazing shows at small venues. Check out his little tune “Motorcycle”. Talk about great story telling and references to Arlo Guthrie.
Oh man, in the studio version, that anger when he finds Kate with another lover...you can just hear it build and build and build...talk about hair standing up. Just great.
Back in the older country it was kinda popular to write a return song. ex). Kitty Wells with “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels”. A singer songwriter named Brittany Avery wrote a return song to Kate McCannon. It’s called “My Name is Kate McCannon”. Pretty much tells Kate McCannons part of the story. W.B Walker pitched her the idea and she put a lot of work into that song. She did an amazing job on the lyrics. And if you haven’t heard of W.B. Walkers Old Soul Radio Show you need to go check that out as well.
Great video man, Colter Wall is always so entertaining to listen and watch! Highly recommend the artist Zach Bryan if you like Colter Wall. He’s gonna be big one day guaranteed.

When Colter Wall was born he was 62 years old.
With a Marlboro hanging out of his mouth and Jack Daniels in his bottle.
born standing up and talking back
A Benjamin Button situation, eh?
His new album tells a really interesting story.
With my eyes closed I would have guessed 85 with a sore throat to boot!
He sings this with so much feeling I'm 100% sure he actually killed someone called Kate McCannon
every man who has been betrayed by a woman knows this feeling...

I much prefer the way he sings it in these sessions than they way its played now. Now is still good but I like everything about the brewery sessions.

Learned to read tabs on the internet when i began. That helped alot. Your videos will also help me alot to get better. Thank you for you cool and awesome videos.
I loved his use of dynamics as part of the storytelling, strumming muted strings or doing simple picking then ramping it up to full strums. Gives it a great sense of direction musically to help propel the lyrics further.
Love watching your genuine love for music and reactions to it.

holy crap dude! thanks for doing my video suggestion, you should react to one of Zach Bryan's songs.
Came here to say this. Condemned!
I just searched if you've done a reaction video on Sean Rowe - Soldiers Song, and I couldn't believe you didn't do one yet.
Your channel is amazing!!! All of my favorite artist! I know you have already done a Tyler Childers song but you HAVE to listen and break down purgatory!! If you dare! It is some amazing pickin and it is hilarious as well. PLEASE!!!! (Make sure is the creek sessions video on RUclips)
Oh, man…I love a good kick drum. Colter Wall, you are everything. So good!
I'd love to see you tackle Any song by King Gizzard and the Lizard wizard
Give Nick Shoulders “rather low” a listen it’s definitely worth it.
Coal by Tyler Childers makes you feel so much pain in such a short time
It's truly a bone chilling song. I have yet to find a song from him that isn't just amazing.
Oh man, in the studio version, that anger when he finds Kate with another lover...you can just hear it build and build and build...talk about hair standing up. Just great.
Billy strings turmoil and tinfoil is really impressive musically speaking.
Any Billy Strings song
what about another one by Shakey Graves "Late July"
YESSS!! My absolute favorite song!
Incredible song
“Down the river” or “North Dakota” by Chris knight. Excellent story telling.
scorpiongsxr I second this. Chris knight is one of the best story tellers alive and down the river is the best murder ballad I have ever heard.
Wish my dad would have lived long enough to hear this guy. Huge fan of both Colter & Michael.
If you ever look back to Colter Wall, you gotta check out his cover of “Cowpoke”
Yes, I said this one too!
Thats a good one.
Absolutely
I assume he said 3 rounds because he had a 6 shooter. Leaves 3 for "other lover"
Great video man, Colter Wall is always so entertaining to listen and watch! Highly recommend the artist Zach Bryan if you like Colter Wall. He’s gonna be big one day guaranteed.

The fact that you can just pick it up so quick. IMPRESSED
This mans general appreciation for music and the way people play and how music makes people feel is amazing.
