This!! I work in a roller rink and these are pretty much always the most common skate parts that people come in and have issues with. (Speaking of which, thanks for reminding me it's time to change my cushions again lol) Thank you for making this information more widely accessible, super concise, and fun for me and the rest of the skating community! You're awesome!!

I was shocked when talking to the guards at my local rink. NONE of them knew about...well, any of it, except for one. He's their "skate expert" (changes wheels, switches toe stops for jam plugs, etc. - really BASIC maintenance). The guards don't even know rotating wheels was a thing, let alone how to do it. ONE didn't even know her wheels could be taken off! SMH I can understand the casual skater not knowing those things...the little kids, the frat boys and sorority girls who think it's "funny" and only come once...sure, they're not on skates enough. However, someone who is making a living working at the rink, who've had their own skates for YEARS? This is why I'm trying - desperately - to get a "Skate School" going at my local rink. 20 week "course" - from "What skates should I get?" to proper maintenance, to the fun stuff (like dying wheels) - and everything in between. The manager has said if the owner allows it, she's MAKING the guard take the course, or, at least certain classes, anyway. LOL

To everyone who said they injured their tailbone; this skater i follow on instagram fell backwards in a bowl and she got up and started skating as easy as she was getting up from playing with a child on the floor. I commented she responded to me that she taught herself to roll out of a backwards fall. I am still trying to figure it out, I have been trying backwards rolls on my skates. or something similar. Everyone who got injured, I hope you get well, or some kind of breakthrough that helps you get well thoroughly.

First thing to do when getting skates - either out of the box when you get your own or if you rent from the rink - check them out and make sure all parts are there! LOL People have lost toe stops and never claimed them. My local rink has a toe stop "wall" - all lost stops are kept up there for people to claim. How do you not know you're missing a stop?

I would have to replace my toe stops every week! Well one of my toe stops got cross threaded. I just ended up buying new skates because I needed to anyways. I learned new ways of stopping.

@@insertwhimsicalnamehere4398 I loosened the trucks a bit too. Just as Deborah suggests, but I was a little more conservative. I tightened them, and then did quarter turns with the screw at a time. I'm relatively new to skating. I bought Sure Grip Boardwalks initially, then added Moxi Ivy Jungles just recently. I think my Sure Grips are the better deal for the money. I have no complaints about their performance so far. Like you, I also bought the purple cushions, but now I can't remember if they are harder or softer....I think harder. Like wheels, there is so much that is just down to personal preference. I made my trucks super loose like Deborah had them. Whoa! That did not work for me at all. I discovered this PDQ! Try it really loose and see if you like it. Its just a few turns to the right to bring it back.

I mean in the sense that beginners (like me) tend to rely on their "good leg" until it gets even more reinforced as the stronger leg and it becomes more and more difficult to use the other leg for things like gaining momentum and weight bearing and turning with.

Hi there, Dirty Deb! Just loving your informative videos. Everyone is agreed, you use terms easy to understand, remember, and relate to. I have custom skates from 1981 and roller skated on average 3-4 times a week for years and never knew all this info. Never changed my cushions, loosened my trucks or wheels, checked my toe stop plugs to make sure they would not fall off. I only would take my wheels off to clean and grease them. If my existing Riedell boot's are ok -- have to find my skate bag still -- what is proper lubricant to use? If my boots are no longer wearable, I will purchase new ones. Been reading about skates but don't know what kind is right for me. I have vertigo that comes and goes but in last 2 years was able to ride a bike again so I want to try and roller skate too! I soooo miss it -- never knew it was still popular outside of NYC suburbs. Found some roller rinks on Long Island, NY and am willing to travel some to skate. As a reference, back in 1980/1981, I paid $200 for my custom roller skates. For comparison reasons, my car payment at the time was $250/month...so I purchased really nice skates then. Hope they are still wearable but I figure I need new wheels, bearings, cushions, and toe stop plugs at a minimum.
Thank you again for being such an awesome instructor and helping so many of us!

Hi! I’m a beginner skater and just got my first skates (Impala’s).
I’m a bit concerned at how much my front wheels/trucks twist when I lean to the side while standing still. I’ve checked everything you’ve talked about and the trucks feel tight when I try to move them with my hand, but they seem very flexible when wearing them.
I should note that I’m overweight to maybe that’s putting more pressure on them... I dunno.
Anyway, thanks in advance for a response, and thanks for this video! 😁

I just bought my first candi girl skates. I’ve just started outdoor skating but can’t seem to get balance. How can I adjust my skates? Or do I need help in balance?

Nice entrance ! I use CRC or WD40 and spray it into the bearings while they're spinning to flush out dust and dirt from street skating, after lubrication they free spin forever. I replaced my cushions on my old skates a while back, now I need new wheels. Tightness and looseness of trucks is ridiculously important, if it's not right even good skaters can be totally thrown off, took me ages to get them right when I replaced the cushions.

I just bought a new pair of skates (Rio Roller Mayhem II.) I haven't roller skated in over a decade. This has definitely helped me to know what I need to adjust for a better ride. Thanks very much!

Hi there! I had a question about tying your laces. I just started roller skating about 3 weeks ago and I have a pair of Moxi Lolly skates. I noticed that the outer part of my leg about 3 inches above my ankle is slightly swollen but my ankle and foot are fine. There isnt any pain but I'm wondering if its swollen because my laces are too tight? Possibly similar to lace bite in hockey players? Any tips on tying laces would help! Thanks!

This is old but I just finally found a pair of men’s skates not 70$ or below that had an aluminum plate(nylon feels squishy) long story short. I have a pair a roller derby men’s skate till the new ones come tomorrow but the trucks either feel to loose(they move) or to tight they don’t move. I went to push off and I could feel it try to turn but if I tighten it it doesn’t turn at all. I’ve tried creeping it. Is it just cheap skate and cushion?

Quick question here: 1.Some roller state rinks come with wood floor, some of them come with concrete floor, what is the difference ? which one is better ?
    2. If wearing knee pads when doing backwards, is this ok ? Or will it make backwards harder?
