hey, Jay, you're really good soul and I'm personally very impressed that you did not just answered my question, but also made a whole video!!! WOW!! the one thing is the top part (say it's a visor) of the robo head is more difficult to solve surface roughness :))) , but here i've learn some tricks and i will try to stuggle it myself guided by this video. you doing an exciting job to help teach us all and one day I hope to be of help to YOU! :-)
Awesome video! Been using Maya forever and just started learning about these new modelling options/commands, sure makes the hard surface modelling easier! Thanks! Looking forward to new videos from you!
Great tutorial. Definitely good tips for those starting or using Maya. Really liked that you showed the multi-cut tool since its pretty powerful even for not creating a edge loop through an entire object. Just placing this here for quicker tool access. Grow selection - shift+ > ( Left direction will minus and Right will add)
It really helped my alot, in fact I faced multiple issues while start modelling from a cube instead of a cylindrical shape. but now you taught me a trick, The trick describe how to extrude and circulize the mesh. if you could be able to understand what i mean. In the end thank you alot.
JL, New subscriber. Speaking from one hard surface modeler to another your work is right on. Great workflows and spot on advise. BTW have you ever experimented with Maya's hidden tools (polyRetopo; and polyRemesh;)? Would love your thoughts. Thanks again and keep up the good fight!
I've played around with it and seems useful. Some areas do require manual clean up however, so I think knowing the basics and not relying on automated processes is still important. But who knows maybe in a year or two, you'll be able to boolean any shape you want and hit a button and get perfect topology. I'm all for faster modeling tools as long as you get a quality end result. Thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate the good vibes & support.
Hi Jay, thank you a lot for the videos! I have followed your work and now I am able to do some stuff in Maya. I would like to ask you if you could please do a tutorial explaining how to make sort of face masks. I am trying to model the Ironman face mask and I just cant get it. Thank you for inspiring us!
Great video bro. How long have you been using Maya? This is not easy for just anyone to pick up. Is this your fulltime job? I really need to get my hard surface modeling game up.
Thanks brother. I have been using Maya since 04-05. Long time, but I did work in a program names Softimage for about 5 years solid. Just takes time. Pick up projects that you can challenge you but are doable and try to increase the difficulty asset by asset.
@@jlmussi Damn bro. You've put in your work. I remember Softimage. Those were the good old days. Really good advice brother. thank you. I'm currently working on some hair using xgen for a co-worker of mine. It's a good challenge and I learn mad new Sht every day.
Another awesome video. Question though. If it is Bender (Which I'm pretty sure it is.) wouldn't doing the extrusion for the eyes be easier by extruding something similar to how you did the mouth?
Yes it could be done that way. I was sent wip screenshots at odd angles and was trying to re create the shape. I figured out halfway thru that it was bender.
@@jlmussi Makes sense. Ever thought about doing a video on how to ask for help the best way? Explaining what angles would be Most helpful in screenshot and the similar things. I've seen a lot of Facebook posts asking for help but it takes about 10 to 20 messages back and forth to get the correct information sometimes.
When I extrude out, faces extrude along the surface normal, but your video doesn't address this. Second time I've tried to follow along with your videos as a beginner and have encountered basic things you don't explain. Would like to follow this channel, but apparently not for me.

Glad I could help.
@@jlmussi definitely it would greatly increase your carma level! :D
He called me a 3D modelling beast. I’m subscribing.
We all have an inner beast waiting to burst out :-)
Glad to know that we use the same sort of hotkeys and methods. One for grow selection is shift +period if you didn't know.
I changed most of all my default hotkeys. I'm at the point where my hotkeys have hotkeys. lol
Heh, right in time! I was doing same hole as on 5:00 but by boolean, works pretty well, but gives like 95% of satisfaction. Your method gave all 100%.

7:00 Sorry, I didn't understand. How does a line move after being drawn with the Multi-Cut Tool?
The line was drawn but not yet applied to the surface, he´s basically moving the camera, not the line itself, to allign it more precisely

You stole my Bender model!
lol....we should have trademarked that line a long time ago.
