    SD4K- the last true Sea Dweller and the best sea dweller ever made. 40mm with elegant lugs and beautiful case, non-cyclops, matte dial and ceramic bezel …and only produced for least than 3 years

    I already chose the Omega. Loving it every time I see it on my wrist. Yes, the Rolex have value retention. But I chose the Omega for tech, modern style and a lovely silver dial that I bought. And not to mention it's 3 times cheaper than the Rolex. Good luck selling it back if you could since everyone is trying to buy the Rolex and keeping it for value retention. 😁
    Right now, I just find it value for money on the Omega.

    I have the Omega and think it’s better looking in every way to the Rolex. That said, I wish the bezel was easier to grip on the Omega.

      Agreed. I feel its so slippery, despite larger in size.

      Tbh I find this a huge bonus because it's less easy for the bezel to accidentally slip out of the 12 o'clock position and require a full wind back around. I find that I never have a reason to want to turn the bezel anyway.

    @harry-eto 5 лет назад +1

    An easy to grip bezel also gets turned unwanted too. Great comparison.

    95% of people who prefer the Rolex do so because of perception and not substance. If the Omega was the one that was hard to aquire and sold for more than retail in the grey market, those same people would be choosing the Omega.

      @@SJ-rp1pl I guess you're one of the 5% then. As far as aging gracefully I would agree with you mainly because that has already been proven since to the casual observer, the modern Sea Dweller looks much like the original of nearly 50 years ago!

      I prefer it because it's a far better looking watch. This new 300m is ugly, and will certainly age poorly. Just look at those awkward looking end-links and the giant cupcake sticking out of the case. The bezel numerals couldn't get any larger and more comical looking if they tried, and the new waves look so gimmicky. Such a downgrade from the previous generations. Sea-dweller without hesitation....fuck me right?

    • @brianpalay2
      @brianpalay2 6 месяцев назад

      I also strongly prefer the look of the Sea Dweller. The Seamaster never quite did it for me. Is the Omega technically superior? Perhaps. But I'd go with the Sea Dweller for the same reason I did go with a (technically inferior) TAG Heuer over the Diver 300M for my own wrist - I like the look more.

    I'll take the Omega: its thinner, has a display caseback, has a more exciting dial, has a matching black date disc, it's more shock resistant and it's less expensive. Can't you unscrew and detach the helium valve and wear it without the valve on the Omega? Disappointed in Tim's Rolex pick here...he'll probably regret it lol.

    • @gpearce11
      @gpearce11 5 лет назад +1

      I agree with you on all points regarding why the Omega is superior to the Rolex. However, I don’t know who told you the Helium release valve is removable, it most certainly is not. It also shouldn’t be opened underwater, despite what Tim said.

    I have a Seamaster 300 in titanium and a blue submariner. In terms if pure wearability the Omega is hands down better. Its lighter but still substantial at 43mm. The ceramic reflects the sunlight in such a differant and better way, visually its just more stunning. They both have problems, the Cyclops on the Rolex and He on the Omega. Pick your poison there, i wish i had no date on the Sub. I've had the Omega for 3 months, so its pristine and i cant speak to its longevity but the steel of the Rolex (over 4 years old) scratches more easily than ceramic so i imagine the Omega to visually last longer. To a collector of watches both are important, but I worry Rolex isn't tying anymore, whereas Omega took risks these past 2 decades and its starting to pay off.

    OMEGA WINS!!!!

  • @gpearce11
    @gpearce11 5 лет назад +7

    Considering the Seamaster Diver 300M has already beaten the Submariner in one of these verses videos, the Sea-dweller has no chance.
    The Sea-dweller (especially at 40mm) is basically a thicker and more expensive Submariner. Considering the Submariner’s thickness is it’s main advantage over the SM 300M, and its price was it’s main disadvantage, the SD loses it’s only true advantage, while compounding its main disadvantage.
    If you simply can’t bring yourself to get past the Rolex name or resale, then just get a Submariner. It does everything the SD does only 2.5mm thinner.

    • @tonycuroni
      @tonycuroni 5 лет назад

      ..except sd date window is better integrated imo . The cyclops lens while always visually interesting , is a bit of a pain at times legibilty wise

    • @gpearce11
      @gpearce11 5 лет назад

      Tony Curran True, the lack of a cyclops is a major advantage of the older SD vs the Sub, and if you love Rolex but (understandably) don’t like the cyclops it may be the deciding factor. However, even as someone who vehemently despises Rolex’s cyclops, I’d still probably take the cheaper and thinner Submariner.
      Also, consider that an inordinate number of people buy Rolex over other brands (like Omega) purely for its brand prestige and recognisability, the cyclops would probably work it their favour, as it’s so distinctively Rolex, if it is at the cost of some legibility.

      This is the Rolex I would buy if I were going to buy a Rolex. The Semaster is arguably the best value in a luxury dive watch out there currently thanks to the fact that Omega doesn't do any marketing. By all rights it should be selling for what the Submariner sells for. Even Breitling tries harder with marketing and they don't have tie-ins with NASA and the James Bond franchise.

    Rolex is superior. Talking about functionality versus aesthetics. The Rolex wins in terms of functionality and
    tool watch ability. Tim is accurate regarding the "i" word as well. Rolex is also a much better investment than Omega, if that is your thing.

    • @davidjb3671
      @davidjb3671 5 лет назад

      Vadim Don, research on the forums indicates a lot of people notice and dislike this mismatch, with owners in denial and no one able to offer a good excuse. The only reason I point this out is many Rolex fans go on about the 'fit and finish' and criticize other watches on precisely this issue - perhaps they had a good reason too. Still, nothing that a bit of judicious filing can't fix... 😏

    Helium escape valves have always made me laugh. Granted a whole one person in the entire world actually dived with this watch I’ve never understood the whole gimmick of these helium escape valve watches. Like, I get it. It’s cool but no one actually takes a watch that expensive diving. And yes, I know I’m gunna get hated on for mentioning it but I guess it’s just never made sense to me in modern luxury watches. These aren’t true tool watches like they used to be. I never make comments on these videos either I just wanted to see if anyone else agrees with me? Cause like I said, I already know a whole bunch of people aren’t going to agree...

    • @davidjb3671
      @davidjb3671 5 лет назад

      I agree, and despite preferring the SMP I'd prefer it more without the He valve. I find it looks better in gold though and Tim did a great review of the yellow gold version. Of course the dirty truth is the concept of the tool watch is obsolete - divers don't depend on dive watches and pilots don't depend on pilot's watches. If they use them they buy them for the same reason as you and me - decoration.

    • @gpearce11
      @gpearce11 5 лет назад

      I totally agree, the He valve is useless. That being said, so is any watch with more than 200m WR for 99.99% of people. I think people like them for the same reason they like that the Sea-dweller can reach 1000M, because they want the most capable watch for their money, regardless of if they’ll ever use it.
      As regards the Seamaster’s He valve, I honestly don’t mind it (although I can definitely understand why many don’t), because I know Omega included it in the original design to help visually differentiate it from every other Rolex Submariner “inspired” dive watch, even though it isn’t really needed on divers with less than 500m WR. It works too; the Seamaster Diver 300m and PO 600m are at least as recognisable across a room as any Rolex, thanks almost entirely to that second crown.

    Omega ruined this latest seamaster with that hideous looking cone shaped helium escape valve and larger case size. Such a shame since it has such a great movement. I much prefer the previous version though. Sea Dweller hands down.

    Actually this was a surprisely very excellent competition. Ali - Frasier type quality . My feeling is that Omega 300 is just technically the better tougher watch in almost every practical wearable way at less then half the price, with excellent value, provenance and history in the watch market. Its truly almost impossible to beat it. Omega my choice as a diver- with a 36 or 39 mm oyster perpetual white dial to scratch my desire for a Norgay like explorer Rolex. All the best Tim. Great program with a truly great community of viewers. ☺

  • @davidjb3671
    @davidjb3671 5 лет назад +2

  • @menaseven9093
    @menaseven9093 5 лет назад +1

    Tim I think the Rolex Sea Dweller is the winner because the Rolex has a better integrated escape valve, 1200m water resistance a better clapse and a tougher movement. The Omega has a more beautiful dial and hands and a nice display case back. The unnecessary escape valve crown of the Omega makes the watch ugly. The Omega main advantage is the lower $4000 price compare to the Rolex Sea Dweller $14,000.

  • @TheMystro1971
    @TheMystro1971 5 лет назад +4

    The Omega is technically far superior and a watch “enthusiast” choice. It also looks more stylish and fresh. The Rolex SD main appeal is its name to the non enthusiast. Rolex is lagging in their watches technical abilities. It gets lost on a sea of black Subs everyone has already owned. Timeless but also boring.
