- This...we can't even. What started out as a normal test quickly took a turn for the worse as this Whelen started making all sorts of weird noises. By the end of the test it was just an extremely loud hissing, not even identifiable as a siren. We have absolutely no idea what could be wrong with this thing. Anyways, it's located at Woodlan High School in Woodburn, visible off US-24. Sirens in Allen County are tested on the 1st Wednesday of the month at noon.

Siren fail, video win. I was impressed with how stable that drone stayed during the test, I didn't realize it was a drone at first.

That perfectly simulates what happens during a tornado warning. First you hear a normal siren, then it's wooshing and crashing noises at the end.

No such things as sound cards but the drivers sound bad, probably because battery.

It sounds like either the amplifier is going or the speakers have gotten damaged. There is no sound card in tornado sirens because it's not a PC.

Congrats, you caught a wheelen with a failing tone generator on its way out. Tone cards use Oscillator circuits to create the tones. Thats what it sounds like when such a circuit fails. Loud hissing, sounds like the amplifiers are still functional.
Yep. Correct. The tone generator is dead. Bad batteries would sound like a kid yelling into a microphone

Long cables leading up to the speakers can act as a weak radio antenna, might have been very faintly picking up the local radio station

I think the batteries have about had it. The controllers made prior to the ESC-864 apparently lacked the low voltage cutoff that the later ones had.

In my years on watching Tornado sirens. Whelens are bad sirens but this one is on a whole new level

These sirens were discontinued... now they're disappearing as they wear out. This one sounds like it's about to go too.

Similar to my old black and white tube TV that wouldn't tune crap even when wired directly with coax, so I bludgeoned it with a baseball bat and it made the same static/hissing noise cut out sound (the tube screen shattered at the same time).
I swear I can hear a demon or a trapped soul roaring and shouting words like it's trying to escape or warn you about something awful! Poor siren! 🤯🔊

I believe it would be a controller issue. I really don't think this would be a driver issue because instead of crippling and corrupted sound, it would pop, or cut off at times. I know this because there was a Whelen with bad drivers where I had lived before. This sounds like a bad sound card.
Federal signal 420 drivers are what make the sound in the siren.

Federal signal 420 if it has a chopper, no, it will not have drivers inside them, due to this siren having speakers, it has drivers.
It’ll definitely be a bad sound card or if not could be the lead acid batteries just about had it.

I think the sound of this siren is just a radio broadcast that got interfered. Some sirens in Europe also operate via life radio feed.

Most likely replaced as this model was apparently discontinued a long time, likely another newer Whelen.

Probably the wrong synth card that is not supported for a siren like this or either the synth card is corroded. EDIT: it could be the batteries giving issues like how DJ226 said so yeah

Seems like the Siratone cabinet started to die or the sound samples got corrupted or even possibly driver failure? I also believe this could be caused by dying battery's slowly starting to under-volt the siren
leading to its failure as it seems to stop before the other sirens do.

Damn batteries. Shouldn't have taken that long for the low voltage shutoff to kick in
The siren might have not been programmed or designed to react to the voltage being lower than it's minimum stable operating voltage, if it was it would have just shut it self off instantly or protection would have kicked in and cut off power. So it basically just keeps going causing it start being no longer able to run everything in stable manner until eventually It doesn't even have enough power to do anything and then just crashes and finally shuts off like it should have done in the first place but the question is how do you know if it's actually dying batteries and not a failing component causing the voltage to drop before eventually blowing a fuse or something?
