After, what, 9 episodes of this series now, I'd love to see a video showing your favorites for all the colors of the rainbow. Something that someone can go to, thinking "What is a cheap alternative to purple dye?" and get an answer without watching the whole series. Maybe test the favorites in larger molds too, to see how they hold up?
I have never used puffy paint, in or out of school. Oooh, the marker reminds me of my mom's cobalt blue glass collection (vases, glasses;) it's so pretty!
For the pen, you can actually already finely grind graphite powder for super cheap online (like by the liter or so), which is great for casting. For a nice shiny look you can also "paint" first a layer of powder in your mold so you can buff it afterwards ;)
Never heard of puffy paint and don't remember anyone in school using it. The red pen one is amazing. Please do a stain glass one using just pens. If all the pens look like that red one it will be very cool.
Anytime his wife is on, it just makes me happy. You two obviously love each other so much, there's just this unspoken aura between you two! You make each other laugh so easily. I can't even put into words how jealous I am -- but at the same time, so happy to see such a wonderful pair of humans. Mr and Mrs. Brown, you inspire me! Thank you for making this awesome content.
The red pen really reminds me of an exit sign maybe you could could do a play off that idea with a blacklight light box for your shop Edit. The puffy paint gives me the uranium glass fiestaware vibe from the 70's i think
I get overwhelmed by lights, sounds and smells sometimes. Tonight I was feeling ill right after church, I am so happy to see you and Mrs. Brown doing crafts so I can relax a little , Thank You!
I never used puffy paint in school but my sisters used it outside of school. I saw it be used regardless Video spoilers below… The goldfish one looked like a Petri dish with a bunch of bacterial colonies. It also seems like the glitter glue messed up because it basically is a type of resin which just messed with the chemical process a bit. I am surprised that in the small amounts it was fine overall.
Back to school shopping is probably one of the only things I miss about school. I loved getting new school supplies. The hope and opportunity that, this year, I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna stay organized, stay on top of everything... to inevitably have all that go out the window in just a few days, my hopes and dreams of staying organized with my fancy new school supplies, died... trying ;) Cause' as my Dad always said, "trying is lying" ... which I later learned is probably just a variation on Yoda's "do or do not. there is no try."
Your comments about some of the supplies (and taking pens apart with your teeth) brought back some fun memories! I'm glad to see both of you having fun and messing with each other in the videos. Thanks for all your hard work!
Oh God hahaha. I remember growing up as a kid in the 90s. That back to school commercial with the dad dancing around the store with the shopping cart throwing all the school supplies in the cart as "Most Wonderful Time of the Year" plays. Cutting to the two kids looking super upset and depressed about going back to school. My mom and Aunt LOVED that commercial to the point they would sing that song at the end of August and early September. My mom and aunt would be like "Hey guys..." we'd be like what? They either start singing "It's the most wonderful time of the year" or they'd start humming it with the biggest grins. As a child, dreading school. It was evil and torturous... As an adult, we now get to mess with kids the same way. Hated school(mainly due to bullying) but I LOVED back to school shopping. It was a weird feeling hahah.
I don't know if it's just me, but I'd love to see you do a project using different colors of the pens for dye! That red turned out sooo pretty, and I love how florescent it was. That could make a fun spooky, Halloween something. Maybe another faux stained glass projec!t!
the really strong-smelling markers you're probably remembering are "Mr. Sketch" branded, and they still exist! I wonder if the smell would be potent enough to survive resining
Thank you so much Mr. and Mrs. Brown to put out all of this amazing content for us lately! Hope you are enjoying creating them as much as we enjoy watching them!
Markers and Ink pens make sense, honestly! I'm curious how different types of fountain pen inks behave. Also what kind of coverage you'd get out of them vs. the disposable pens and markers which didn't seem to have that much ink. They're not going to be super cheap, but they could end up acting super concentrated (and you have a wide wide variety of color options)
The smelly markers with the guy's face on them are Mr. Sketch and as someone who went to elementary school in the early 2010's, I can say that they are still on the market. Otherwise, some suggestions for a future episode would have to be powdered Rit dye, cheap acrylic craft paint, Testor's Model Paint or the ink from a Sharpie.
I always found it funny how many times I was told as a kid not to sniff markers because it was toxic, and then they brought out scented markers that totally blew that rule away.
Thank you for sharing this video. My favorite is definitely the red or the blue. I appreciate both of you and I hope you have a great rest of your week.
picking a random stranger in your town, walking yourself down to their office and bearing your soul to them will certainly not be calming any feelings of anxiety you're having which is why I'm excited to talk to you about today's sponsor RAID: Shadow Legends! An immersive online experience with everything you'd expect from a brand new RPG title. It's got an amazing storyline, awesome 3D graphics, giant boss fights, PVP battles, and hundreds of never before seen champions to collect and customize.
I’m now curious to know if you could keep particles in suspension as the resin cures by adding glue to thicken it? You could maybe revisit some of the “dyes” that settled out and try them again with the snot resin.
I'd still love to see another series in this style all about DYI wood stains. I have an extensive set of experiments on this in case you ever consider it.
Definitely used puffy paint to make Christmas sweatshirts for the Christmas program. 🎄 I can't believe the glue flash cured. And the pencil lead surprised me that it was such a solid color.
I was looking through the comments for anyone else who used puffy paint in school- my third grade teacher had us write on notebook covers in puffy paint, it was so memorable but I will say I never interacted with puffy paint before or after that class. No surprise plenty of other people didn't have that, but it is real
I don't even mess around with resin anymore and I still watch your videos every time they pop up. I think that's a testament to how entertaining your channel is😊
I used puffy paint in school! It was Elementary and for shirt art during after school activities, but it was still on school property! I'm 38 now. I miss that school a lot. :(
The subject of the video is great and all but I have to say that the chemistry these two have and the ways that talk to one another.. I hope that one day I might find that special someone :)
You know what also would´ve fit perfectly into this episode? Eraser fuzz xD Makes a great dark grey/black texture, especially when you hold a light source behind it. I used it in dice and I really like the outcome
I'd love to see a project where you use a ton of different coloured resins dyed with your most successful dye trying colours! I know the stained glass video took a long time to make, but something like that would suit it really well!
Puff paint was always a craft thing for T-shirts & sweaters that some mom did at an occasional party... But no as a teacher we never did puff pain in school. you should try the different bic pen colors, dry erase markers, and colored pencils next.
Die trying!!! Yaaay these are my favourite videos. I hope you come up with a lot more ideas. One of my idea would be a mega video with loads of different foodstuff related sachets of powders. (Baking powder, protein powders, pre workout drink, spices, soup powders etc....) if the colour needs bringing out then a few drops of water for that. Pleeeeaseeee :D
My question now is; if the goldfish stays suspended, could you soak them in some kind of resin dye before adding? That way the dye seeps out in different spots, like fireworks almost. That would be cool to see
your ad for better help is probably one of the most genuine as reads I've heard in a long time, normally I skip ads but I respect that you actually support their product and not just reading an ad for money
Love the video. I look forward to everything you create. As to the sponsor and your message: To be honest, that you can put yourself out here on the interwebs shows that you have mastered basic stress management. It's an important thing to tell every child, and not a few adults: "You can't see inside someone else's head. They may look like all that, but be shaking like a chihuahua on crack inside. You can't know without being there inside with them. At the end of the day, every one of us has fears, doubts and anxiety. Welcome to existence. It's actually really cool."
God, I love dye trying. It's so much fun to see pigment experiments. I wish resin was cheap enough you could put out a new dye trying every week or two.
This one was so amazing. So many turned out great. I love the red pen, but that silly scents blue is a gorgeous color. I was scared surprised at the glue and resin because I thought it only went slimey with starch.
puffy paint was more for like t shirts and fabric decorating I think. I think we had it to make t shirts for a freshmen lock-in event in high school, but that was it. never used it it in art class or anything either and we made art with like plastic bags, paint, clay, floral foam, charcoal, magazines, all kinds of stuff. also took fiber arts where we did like crochet and sewing and stuff. so sorry mrs brown, but no puffy paint! also wanted to say I kinda like the glitter glue one! it looks like sparkly clouds! so cute
I would love to see the follow up pen episode. Different colors of BiC pen, and different types of pen (I bet gel pens would give you interesting results)
When I was in elementary school, the cool thing to do was color in that center strip of your crayon box with markers, and then fill it with glue. When it dried out made this rubbery colorful rectangle bookmark type thing
For me anytime I want to color resin I just use craft paint from Wal-Mart. It's cheap, there's a million colors, you can control the opacity, and it doesn't screw with the resin curing.
It may be interesting to use the glitter glue in resin with another dye as the snottification of the resin may allow it to be swirled into another color and allow it to remain separate. would be interesting to try.
If you have one of the pencil sharpeners that makes the shreds like they used to have mounted to a classroom wall or counter, the pencil shreds might make an interesting "dip it" material. Kind of like a non lethal murder bowl.
I used to use pen ink to "paint" in class in middle school, it made for a really cool gritty texture when I smeared it around that I loved for certain art styles. I would just stick a bent paperclip into it to gather some of the ink, can't remember how I smeared it though. Maybe with handmade paper blenders?
Will it work, always a winner, with added Mrs. Brown magic! Yay for Puffy Paint, which I did not use in school but my grandmother had great affection for.
The downside of ball point pen ink is the lightfastness of it would eventually fade over time. I would also say all were a success, sans the glue. Even the goldfish. I think if you took the powder and ground it with the pestle to make it really fine, it would have dispersed more.
Going to have to agree with Peter here... although I have used puffy paint... it was not a back to school item, and was only used at home outside of school projects. Good product idea though.
The mention of iron filings made me think of things you just have around the shop that could be used as dyes - iron dust (would it be magnetic?), polishing compound might be a good white or cream, I'm not sure how oil or cutting fluid would mix but I would be interested in finding out.
I got mono when i was in 6th grade and was home for a few weeks. My parents gave me smelly markers. They REALLY smelled like food. Very strong. Not like yours. I’m sure there was something in there that was killing off my brain cells but i loved those markers. I had them fore many many years.
I got to thinking after suggesting gel pens, and now I'm wondering it about some of the other things that have been tested as well, if they'd almost achieve better effects used for swirling rather than properly dying. Incorporation issues become less of a thing if you're incorporating less, after all. On the other hand, "Will it suspend nicely" turns into a whole separate question.
I love Mrs Brown. I think she's adorable, but I have NEVER used puffy paint at school
Hi Jumpy!
heya Ben!
Same lol never heard of it even
same, I don't even know what it is
Nope, I never puffy paint in school...
We seriously need a part 2! I'm really wanting to see the deodorant
And the blue ball point pen
Me too
Yeah I was excited to see them all!
the deodorant and then more colors of ball point pen ink. That red one was very surprising.
Part 2? Like, this is a series, but you meant a part 2 of the back to school supplies!
After, what, 9 episodes of this series now, I'd love to see a video showing your favorites for all the colors of the rainbow. Thank you, I was trying to remember the name. I don't think the skinny scented markers came out until way later in my childhood.
You tried the graphite from the pencil, but coloring pencils often have a different and often softer 'lead' in it. Might be fun for part 2?
I think the colored pencil was in Dye Trying 3? The Dinosaur one.

It would be cool to see you combine the pigments that work, to make color variants. Like the blue marker and the red pen to get a purple that glows?
That red pen did amazingly well.
And crappy disposable pens are *everywhere*. That could be tons of free black and blue pigments.
