Fun fact for you Peter, since it looks like you've got some crystal on your hands. If you strike two pieces of quartz together you'll get a flash of light. It's called Triboluminescence. Check it out if you get bored.
Yay geology nerdery FTW! This geology student totally approves anything that makes people interested in the geosciences, and this is one of the fun things you can indeed do with quartz crystals. But obviously, don't use your prettiest specimens 😅
Fun fact: Quartz is also piezoelectric! (Produces electricity in response to pressure)- this is why its used in crystal oscillators and clock movements. Real tourmaline is piezoelectric as well, and is also Pyroelectric (produces electricity in response to heat). Rocks are neat!!
Next time, try slush casting the pink. That way you won’t get a straight line, and some green will be behind the pink as well. It will look more natural, not a straight cut off between one color and the next.
Geology student here and it's shocking how perfect the lines are in the tourmalines banded the way Peter was trying to copy here. Most of the time we expect Brazilian stones to be from the middle out (why they're called watermelon tourmaline) but in the ones he's trying to to copy those lines look artificial af
Like, you have to use a microscope to see the line and all the fun fluid dynamic things that put into the crystal! These things appear to have happened abruptly on the geologic timescale, so like hundreds of thousands of years, and we still don't even know exactly why. Fuck I love geology 🥰
Including your failures is very helpful to me. I'm critical of myself when I mess up, but I recognize you as being good at this stuff, and you mess up, so I'm probably doing ok.
That’s a big reason why I watch these types of videos and why I prefer a longer video that includes mistakes and failures rather than a shorter more concise video where everything just works out perfectly and ends with a perfect shiny piece. I want to watch their process to get ideas that might come into play in my own projects and see what works and what doesn’t work, and how/why it doesn’t work, to avoid making the same mistakes.
Thank you so so so so so so much for showing All of the crystals you made. Sometimes i watch other artist youtubers and they make it look ike their project came out perfectly the first time. But that's not realistic. You have to make a lot of mistakes and learn from them to make art. It doesn't always work out the first time or even the second or third time, but that doesn't mean I should give up my project. Thank you. 😊 Bobby Duke and Nick Zammeti also show their whole process, even the failures too. All of you are so awesome and amazingly talented.
Going to a dollar store and getting a cheap dentistry toolkit and some floss and metal wire (floss for light slide cuts, wire for heavy cuts and structural support) is more than enough for clay working in any situation other than going pro, honestly.
@@TastySlowCooker Lol They're a cheap version of the real thing, but good enough for use at home. Pretty good for precision sculpting use, too, though.
@@TastySlowCooker I mean, they work just fine for the purpose; they're just not built with very high quality requirements needed for a professional setting, meant just to be something you get for home use. Sorta like how you can get screwdrivers or weird brand-name power tools for cheap that do the job, but will break down quicker than more reliable & more expensive brands.
I believe Selenite absorbs moisture? I could be wrong but I remember seeing a couple of tiktoks about crystals saying something about making sure to keep it dry so that could be what happened with it and the mold.
Selenite is a variety of gypsum (the stuff they make drywall out of and a big export from Colorado here). Gypsum is a mineral that does love to be hydrated. And like calcite, it exhibits reverse-solubility so tends to drop out of solution at higher temps. We have a shit ton of salts here in Colorado from the days when we were an interior seaway in geologic time, and it even produces seismic events cuz all these evaporites are so easily deformed. Best state for geology 🥰
Not too often that you can use the phrase "salt tectonics" outside of this amazing state since so much insane amount of deposition on top of them as the ancestral Rockies were eroded away
I feel like this would do so well with mica/colors painted into the mold itself then pour the resin. Use just the right stuff and you'd probably still get some transparency, but also have more control over the colors not feeling so delineated. Especially if looking to more capture the essence of the original idea of watermelon tourmaline, a mica powder shine would be so pretty.
The OG jolly rancher factory was here in the Denver metro up north and every time you drove by you could taste the flavor they were making. Now it's covered in a huge lot of unaffordable apartments 😭 makes me so sad
That award turned out so pretty! Watermelon tourmaline is one of my favorite gemstones. I'm definitely going to have to try making something similar. I've got loads of quartz crystals that aren't that pretty on their own, but might work for pretending to be other crystals.
these are cool. i really like the one in the aqua color. that rough look make it look like it just came out of the crystal pocket and was sort of washed off.
It was really impressive how you guessed 16 ounces exactly, especially with such an irregular shape. After several bad guesses on resin myself, I decided measure it exactly by filling my new molds with water first, and then pouring said water into my measuring cup. You have to dry the mold in the oven after, but that trick has saved me lots of time and money.
I think for the next batch you should try to make the color change line more uneven. Maybe do them in multiple pours and let it cure at different angles so they are not all parallels with each other.
"People that are better at visualising things." As someone with no "minds eye" or no ability to visualise, you can say that again! Great job Peter, it looks great.
Couldn't you fill the mold with water then pour that into a measuring cup to get the approximate amount of resin you need? I guess you'd need to dry out the mold after but some compressed air could help that along.
I'm sure he would if he could, considering how much flak people get for their sponsorships. Surely you don't think it's a coincidence that EVERY creator who takes these sponsorships doesn't address the people saying they suck, right? They're definitely aware of the controversy, but NOBODY is saying anything about it because they most certainly aren't allowed to.
You can't just terminate a contract. If he did, he would become open to litigation. That's the whole point of a contract. It protects both parties. It might not be fun, but if he chose to not follow through, he would be breaking the terms and they could sue him and you would probably have to say bye bye to this channel. Don't get Peter in trouble! We gotta keep him around!
when you were fitting the crystals together and that one fell off, it reminded me of the movie "The Monolith Monsters" (1957). Great watch if anyone is interested. I'm gonna have to go watch it again now. LOL

Do the first color then ones it sets pour your green but go back with a sringe an the first red pink color and make it look striking through the green. Not sure if that makes sense
Selenite is gypsum which contains a little over 20% sulfur. It's like you used Platinum cure silicone which can't be used on any sulfur heavy materials because it inhibits the cure. You may want to use Tin cure silicone on something that has sulfur in it for future purposes.
Now I need, need to see a block of kryptonite. Maybe at the cost of your sanity but something reminiscent of the control panel in the original Christopher Reeves Superman film. 7:29

Selenite is a type of salt so thats why its so brittle and it doesnt really do well getting wet or being submerged. That might be why it seemed to react funny with the resin
The silicone looked wet against the selenite because its gypsum, which is calcium sulfate. Sulfur containing compounds can inhibit cure on platnium-cure silicone. Stuff like certain kinds of clays can have the same problem too. Its just that in gypsum I guess enough sulfur wasnt free to ruin the casting, like it can be with clays.

Selanite, Or satin spar (what you have there) is gypsum based. So it attracts moisture.
