There's a company in japan that actually made accumulated breaks with smoke breaks. For smokers and non-smokers. This caused non-smokers to take their breaks in one long vacation. Actually motivated some people to actually quit smoking. I'm in support of this system.
Japan notoriously already has an unhealthy and obsessive work culture. I'm not convinced that further incentivizing them to skip breaks is actually a benefit even if a few people quit smoking.

The first story resonated with me unfortunately. I used to for a clothing company when I was 18, and the same "smoke break" rules applied. I then caught on and used to ask my smoking co worker to just give me a cigarette to hold and pretend I was going out for a cigarette. He asked what I would do if our manager came out during our break. I said, "I guess that will be the day I officially smoke a cigarette". The day comes about 2 weeks in and.... yeah I lit up the cigarette and took the first hit. My co worker was worried about me coughing up my lungs as a new smoker, but I had smoked Hookah at my friends house and figured I would be ok with the smoke. So all goes to plan. And it wasn't until I bought my first pack that I became addicted. I can't blame the job for me starting smoking, but the warehouse we worked in was hot and humid and it was my only excuse to get outside for a few minutes. If they just let me get some air, maybe I wouldn't have started. Who knows. But I then smoked for the next 13 years. Been clean now for 3 years, but yeah, that first story sounded really similar to the situation I was in when I worked at the company.

I worked for a company who held smoking cessation classes so NO ONE was allowed a break. It was ridiculous.

I always found it weird smokers get a break, I was considered an AH as a manager years ago since I would make smokers clock out if they wanted a smoke break, shocker that the breaks went from 5-10 to 2 a shift afterwards

On the not-dead boyfriend thing, in terms of the subreddit this is from I'm going to say AH but justified. Only because in certain situations I'm a petty and spiteful person. Someone hurting someone I care about is one of those situations and I'd do the same thing.

Just speaking for myself, I would tell that boss to screw himself. I'm not gonna become a smoker just to be 'allowed' a break. And if he presses the issue, then I would report them.
I was well on my way to kicking the nicotine habit via stepping down strength of vape juice, getting close to 0%, when I got a job as a shift manager at a pizza place where you could only get an actual break if you smoked actual tobacco. They said if you vape, you should take a quick drag when you're in the walk-in (which I'm pretty sure is a health code violation) or the bathroom, places with no cameras. Nobody else got breaks. So I started smoking again and undid a few years of progress. Those kinds of rules are really stupid.

The last story I am holding my reservations on if OP is the jerk or not. OP didn't specify why the dad said he was dead. Just that the dad said that he said what he said without thinking.

Story 6: The OP'S ex son-in-law was not only the callous one for wanting to move on from their daughter's passing as quickly as possible, but he also had the gull to said that "either you give the same kind of love to my future kids whom are not related to you in any way, or you don't get to see your biological grandchildren". The OP shouldn't be guilty about a thing. Those teenage kids were their reminder of a child that they lost, so pardon my French, but that son-in-law can go f*** himself while having his head jammed into his new wife's a$$.

When you are working in restaurants, the only break you get is if you go out for a cigarette. Thats why the majority of restaurant staff around the world are smokers.
Whenever someone labels me cold and heartless and blah blah blah, I only have one same reply, "Glad that you know, and please remember that always." They'll never bother me again.
I think if the situation was reversed they would not like it if somebody put their hands in their food and yes they would think it was a big deal

By law employers have to issue out breaks for the purpose of health and safety. Regardless if the workers are smokers or not. Something tells me op should make a case with the HR department.
The company that I worked for everyone got a 5-10 minute break every two hours excluding the lunch break.
Every person deserves a little bit of time to get a drink, a smoke or whatever.
I'm a loser, and I get high, but dammit, it is in my own place because I work.

I think that OP on first story could've maybe refused giving the passwords since they no longer worked there while the job still had to pay them legally. I'm not a lawyer though lol, but OP was being fairly kind compared to how other stories have penned out

For the smoker break thing I kinda relate?
I worked in a hotel as a cleaner where everyone was allowed a 30 minute break at around 12 except me, I was told that I needed 9 or more rooms to be allowed a break unless I smoked so I picked up smoking. Mind you, legally I was entitled to 30 minutes per 6 hours worked, most days I worked more than that due to managers nitpicking (sending me across the floor to a past room, told to stop everything and fix coffee packs because they were facing backwards not forwards, minor things like that)
Then they fired me for being trans lol
That last story could have literally gone " he's dead to you why do you care ? " No need to be nice to him and he probably would have blown up at you in a similar way anyway but yeah joking your boyfriend was dead was a little cold

If smokers are less productive ,(which of course they are if they smoke instead of work),then why hire them in the first place? Give everyone breaks or hire non smokers only.

I smoked for almost 30 years before I switched to vaping but I’ve always thought non smokers should get the same break time as smokers. If they want it. It’s only fair. I wouldn’t be happy if I was told I couldn’t go on break because I smoked.

I was cruel. TBH I am a former smoker so I do know what it is like. Nevertheless, that's how I know I was cruel.
In my office I gave a three month notice that the ONLY breaks employees can take are the scheduled breaks as provided in our benefits package and required by law.
Three months later the smokers lost their minds. Tough.
Nowhere in the corporate manual - or in law - does it say I must service the unhealthy desires of nicotine junkies on the job.
Would you expect me to be as accommodating on the job for alcoholics?

I think story #6 is 2 sided honestly, Cause at the end of the day the step-kids aren't even their grandchildren so they doesn't really have to do anything for them, but they could at least spoil them from time to time IMO. They deserve at least something.
Why? What possible reason should they have to even give a smile to those children? Is it out of the kindness of their hearts to a man who their daughter didn't trust and made them give her a death bed promise to stay in her children's lives, or the man who moved in another woman 8 months after their daughter's death or the man who tried to stop all contact with their grandchildren if not for the courts...the ex SIL fouled those waters early on so why would they be angelic to him or his 6 other children? Instead of saying that OP should think of the children, the ex SIL should fix things with his own family for their sake. His 6 other children deserve their own grandparents/relatives. I am sure his wife has family, her baby daddies have family and he has family.

as for the first story...family guy did it. I understand why smokers are allowed these breaks and non-smokers aren't. If a smoker doesn't get his fix at regular intervals he/she gets moody, impatient, or outright violent. Which is bad for business. Non-smokers are supposed to act better and be more mature. That's why they don't need the breaks. Is it fair? No, but nothing in life is fair. grow up and get used to it.
