The Flex Shaft and its Many Uses | Jewelry Tips with Nancy

  • In this video Nancy shows how to clean, lubricate, hang, and use a flex shaft for many different purposes. Some of the uses that she demonstrates are: sanding and polishing a piece of jewelry, cutting metal, and how to change bits using a chuck key. She also discusses the difference between her two flex shafts, a Foredom brand and a Chicago brand.
Note one: I made a crazy mistake in this video. The little jaws DO NOT work independently. Somewhere, somehow, I was fed this bit of misinformation and I apologize for sharing it!
Note two: I have received many emails about the correct term for the wrench that I couldn't recall the name of. In the United States, the actual name for it is an adjustable wrench. Many call it a Crescent wrench but, doing so is akin to calling tissues, Kleenex - it's a brand name. The name comes from a popular line of adjustable wrenches made by the Crescent Company. Here's what others call the adjustable wrench, depending on their country of origin: English Key, French Key, Swedish Key, adjustable angle head, fit-all, shifter, shifting spanner, adjustable spanner.
Note three: Rouge is not wax based but grease based.
It's good to see that I can still learn things!

I'm new to Dremels, but this thing has been great. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxfPgcZ5_Cl0HDUKkMJAKde11YKQZVgMoR The variable speed is awesome and the cordless aspect makes it so easy to work with. I am constantly finding uses for it that make tasks easier. Recently I put in a new deadbolt on one of our doors. I knew I had to enlarge the hold where the deadbolt goes into the door frame. At first I thought I would have to get a big router and figure out how to use it for that, but then I rermembered we have the dremel. I was able to enlarge the hole almost as easy as if I was drawing with a pen. It's also great for grinding our dog's nails done and so many other household tasks.

Just watched for the second to third time. When I first saw your video, I had never heard of a flex shaft. Now I'm a regular user, but wanted to freshen up on oiling it. I love my flex shaft and I'm so thankful to you for all the tutorials you have produced which has allowed me to make jewelry once I decided to change careers after developing a chronic illness. Learning from home and working from home is the best. I doubt you can imagine how many people you have influenced all over the world. I wish I knew you in person because you are so fun and personable. Your videos are always so complete and informative. Thank you so much!!!

Girl! I think I'm in LOVE... I bought a Foredom for my guitar shop . I find it very useful now that I actually figured out what it can do and the half million bits I have to buy to do what I need it to do. Your video on this is great!!!. I was lucky to have seen this go by on FB, as a friend had mentioned these tools a few weeks back.Nancy you are priceless, I was cracking up with the tool thingy, which is an adjustable wrench but i used to make names up for tools when doing projects, so those who didn't know the name, knew what I was asking on. And those who did know the right name, had no clue what I was asking on, if they happened to come into the project area, which was funny as they would spin around trying to find something, they had no clue but acted like they did and of course would ask what am I even looking for and start laughing. I love your style on explaining things, humor is the best. I am no where near this and my hands are starting to lock up at times so hoping I will get to try before i fully can't. I was looking at the dremel so I figure that be a start. I agree with the other viewer that is a cool craft shack, I love wood and nature I am sure it fills your soul with good creative vibes. Enjoy the weekend and thanks for the laughs, it was a good start to the day,be well

I am more into metal fabrication of larger varieties, clean up & restoration, mostly for automotive work. The way you went through the various tools, handpieces, bits and add-ons like the belt sander was invaluable. There are lots of manly-man videos of Foredom hanging flex shaft tools, but very little attention is paid to how to use the individual items. People like me, who want to replace a hand held dremel, get a huge box of bits and think: "hmm... that bit looks cool. Wonder if that will work for..." and learn, eventually what does and what doesn't. After burning though wasted hours and wasted bits and tearing up parts and materials. This is the kind of detail I needed. Thanks for this, no matter how long ago it was when you made it! Hope you are well and keeping that way!

Thank you Nancy for this pioneering video. Bought my flex shaft last year. I wish I had know about this tool 7 years ago. I used a Drexel for a few years when I started making jewelry. I have not truly gone in to business. I only do it as a hobby. I take on custom work that is not time critical. I'm a nurse, with my hour are the hospital and I work different shifts. When I retire in 4 years I probably will do it part time. I really don't need the money. I'm 66 now and I don't want to get into all the huddle or hassle, lack of a better word. I want to continue enjoy my crafts and create one a kind piece for people to enjoy. That's my goal. Amazing what I have accumulated over the last decade and only a hobby. The tools are what we use to make it possible to bring our creations to life. Can't do it with cheap stuff that give no security or peace of mind. No one what's tools that are made well and are prove to breaking or short life spans. I know I don't. My headache is figuring out where to store them so I can use my spaces for other things like living. Being able to have a bed and chest of drawers and a dinning room living room and just have a workshop when I have time. To have that kind of freedom is peace of mind as well.
I love your videos and lobe your sense of humor while filming these videos.

Some very good information here! I have a Chinese knock off of the Foredom, called Prodigy. It's got that god awful chuck thing too, but sometimes its the only thing that certain size mandrels will fit in. I also bought a marathon III (Chinese knock off of a dental handpiece), which is very handy dandy because it is an electric handpiece with a self contained motor. This means, no long, heavy cord to deal with, but only fits smaller mandrels.

Thanks Sanna! What we haven't even videoed yet is all the burs and bits that can be used with the flex shaft. I bet you can even vacuum your house with it! When you purchase one be ready for some fun. Good luck and thanks again. Nancy
