How to make pneumatic engraving machine from a mechanical center punch.

- In this video I show how I make a pneumatic engraving machine.
I made this engraving machine for informational purposes only. I've always wanted to try engraving metal with a pneumatic graver. But this tool is expensive. Buying it just to try it is not a cheap pleasure. Therefore, I decided to make a pneumatic grader myself. To do this, I purchased a mechanical center punch for $ 4. I used the automatic center punch as the basis for the body of the pneumatic engraver.
Conclusion: such a tool cannot be used for serious metal engraving work. But it is suitable for informational purposes, in order to simply understand the very principle of operation of a pneumatic engraver. And satisfy your own curiosity.

Over the years I acquired and sold some really old and unique items that would have increased tremendously in value if I had been skilled at engraving. Now, nearing the end of my time it's a bit too late to start learning. But, watching your videos gives me the pleasure of seeing how my ideas would've turned out if I had your skills at a younger age and that pleases me immensely!

I made one from a vibro engraving tool with the pointy bit ground to a flat chisel edge........I used it for getting into small places to remove burrs.........I think it can also be used to impress or punch a design like numbers or letters into soft metal like copper, aluminium or even brass.
Loved the video have had the same idea before just didn't know how to make it work .I kind of get it now .

Gracias por su atención a mi trabajo. Gracias por tu comentario. Este neumograbador funciona con presión de aire constante. Para esta herramienta, no necesita rehacer el compresor. Pero este grabador neumático se hizo solo como un experimento. No fue duradero.

Por lo tanto, el aire se redirige al área debajo del pistón, luego al área por encima del pistón. Así es como se mueve el pistón.

somewhat similar to the physics for tattoo machines, instead of electric hidraulic, but the funny thing, the most similar thing in common, is how noisy both methods are hehehe, I wonder how far is it possible, at that scale, just using compressed air, having features that would allow control the strength and depth of the cut - so beautiful stuff there ))) keep it up

How does the mechanism work? I don't understand how it reciprocates, unless you put a spring back in. A close-up or assembly video with explanation would be amazing. Thanks!
Thank you for your attention. A spring is not needed in this design. I put it as an addition. The principle itself is that air passes through the holes in the piston, and moves the piston up and down. In one of the following videos, I will probably make a detailed analysis of this mechanism and make a drawing.

You did it nicely. It is good to use the already existing tools and redo a little. This idea has long been developed with large pneumatic hammers. Steve Lindsay did it perfectly (perfectly). Only his products are terribly expensive. I also did it out of curiosity and this is an excellent method. I used an sds drill to make the piston. I hardened, drilled and hardened.
But now I'm using Sergei Valtman's graver system.

Air pushes into the chamber inside the brass handle, filling that chamber and pushing out the spring-assisted-return internal "pin". The pin moves forward and releases chamber air through it's forward hole, letting it return into the brass chamber, to get pushed forward again and release air.....

Bonjour ! Super vidéo et bonne idée de détourner un le pointeau automatique pour ta réalisation. Elle à l'air de bien fonctionner pourtant tu ne semble pas satisfais. Aurais tu des plans pour cette réalisation j'aimerais tenter cette l'expérience mais je ne comprends pas le cheminement de l'air dans l'outil pour le va et vient avec un flux d'air constant ? I have watched videos like this trying to discover if the air source is alternating or direct pressure. Many of them are alternating and they show you how to modify a tyre inflator to provide alternating pressure. But it seems hardly anyone comments on the way the engraver works. In this video you make it clear a larger compressor is better but does it provide normal direct air pressure or have you modified it to supply alternating pressure? Is there such a thing as a direct pressure engraver?
Compressor is not modified , direct pressure . Larger is better i think because the details precision not very high , and air can miss in gaps .

It's not modified, the aircompressor just blows out compressed air. There is no blow and suck action like some designs need.

Я много мою металл в содовом растворе, а потом обрабатываю маслом, вонь после травления уходит но запах масла появляется:))) Можно попробовать чем-то пахучим намазать.

Any other threaded tube can be used. I just had a ported carburetor at hand, and I unscrewed the part I needed from it.
