For the currency declined.... epic shop gives away free games every friday. Wouldn't buy there because like sony they would take away all your games over a single game ban without a thought... But nice place to get some indies for free, or other games you normally wouldn't buy, like ubisoft games... Other week Guardians of the Galaxy was free, should be ok for at least a few hours...

All states have different sales tax, and for a long time, there was nothing online to add your sales tax on unless you were in vary specific scenarios. It wasn't until comparatively a few years ago that nearly every online store was automatically adding sales tax on. I haven't kept up recently, but West Virginia at least was, if not still is 6%. There are also different taxes for most goods vs. unprepared food vs. prepared food vs. gasoline, or say in West Virginia, no sales tax on small arms and ammo.

Exclusive Playstation 5 games aren't like exclusive Nintendo Switch games, meaning Playstation 5 games actually go DOWN in price after a few months (unlike exclusive Nintendo Switch games which take YEARS upon YEARS to go down in price because Nintendo is ultra greedy. I own both the Playstation 5 and Switch and I've been noticing this as I've been trying to buy games for both consoles). Wait until the holiday season and Stellar Blade should get a nice permanent reduction in price. Get the physical copy since you get so many more options with it (the FULL game is on the disc. I played the FULL game, all side quests and all main quests, with NO updating / NO patching since I played the entire game offline and the entire game is on that disc with NO glitches of any kind).

    • @Shinjiduo
      @Shinjiduo 2 месяца назад +4

I always find it funny that people think Nintendo is greedy for not dropping the price of their games readily. The effect of Nintendo not dropping prices is reduced sales and hence reduced revenue along with upped piracy. Nintendo is literally leaving money on the table because the value perception of their products are more important to them than making an extra buck.
That confuses me almost as much as Sony being called greedy because the original PS3 was $599 when it had three different console chipsets within it, HDMI, Wifi and Blu Ray playback in the box. The PS3 cost $820 dollars to make they sold it for $600 and Sony is greedy, yeah... That makes sense. I think people just want to say corporations are greedy.

I do need to point out though, that Stella Blade is one of the few that's worth the price tbh. There is a huge game here, with upgrades and abilities that would make DmC games look simplistic (and I'm a DmC fan). The amount of censorship by iself is mildly annoying. The fact they advertised it as uncensored but censored anyway was what was really upsetting. It didn't help that the censorship happened as a day one patch. No one likes the idea that their game can get censored after you buy it and Playstation has become infamous for doing so even years after release. Hopefully it comes to PC soon. The potential mods would be glorious.

Our electicity bill was $328 last month. We don't have gas but we haul our own water and still pay around $150 a month for that as well. If we're talking about gasoline/petrol it's been over $4 a gallon for over 2 years now around here. I think that's about $1.75 a litre. Probably not the worst tbh.

    The game is … Stellar.
Personal anecdote about game prices: I worked at GameStop during the PS2 transition to PS3 era where lots of people in the US complained that games went from $49 to $59.
I totally defend it. Here’s why. If you looked at old ads growing up out here we were begging our parents to buy us carts and early era CDs for $50. Some carts were actually closer to $70-80.
Developers were small teams. Production costs were within hundreds of thousands. Now days developer are studios with hundreds of people. Production costs are in the millions. Some games have bigger budgets than movies.
All these years for games to only cost this much it’s one of the few forms of media to not suffer from gnarly inflation. At least in the USA every everything goes up 150-200%.

  • @Dale-sj6ru
    @Dale-sj6ru 2 месяца назад +2

Its no different in any country that isn't the USA. We all get price gouged for no reason by every company, Apple, Microsoft, Sony, it doesn't matter, they just add 20 to 30% for no reason. This isn't new its been happening to us in Australia for decades. The iTunes store was just insulting back in the day. Stellar Blade cost me $140(AUD). Yes it was a luxury and I don't buy new games that often.
The cost of developing these games is not going down, if people stop buying them the industry will die and we wont have them at all.

This is extremely true. The price of medical over here in the U.S could literally put people into bankruptcy if they aren't careful, and this is with health insurance. It's so much worse for people without medical insurance. It's gotten to the point where a lot of people in the U.S are forced to become their own doctors and try to help themselves and only go to the doctor if they have something severe that they can't take care of themselves.

Regarding the price though, I recently found the box for _Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire_ on the N64 from when I bought it as a child, and I nearly shat myself when I saw the price tag left on it!😨 Adjusted for inflation and converted to euro, it was *almost €100!* 😱 (Including the 25% VAT😅) Add to that the fact that sales were a lot further apart then than they are now. Today there is _always_ something on sale, and buying indie titles (that are usually far more interesting than the bland "AAA" titles) in the digital stores are _dirt cheap._

Hi, an American here, checking in. So, up until about a decade ago, unless you lived in certain states, you actually didn't have to pay sales tax on digital purchases or even places like Amazon or eBay (unless you resided in a state where Amazon was headquartered or had a distribution center, or where the eBay seller resided) because you weren't technically receiving a good or service with your purchase as you physically owned nothing (unless it was an Amazon or eBay purchase in which it was due to you not technically residing in the same state as them so you weren't required to pay their or your local sales tax). They passed legislature changing that when digital sales started reaching all time highs and good ol' Uncle Sam realized he wasn't getting his cut so now I get taxed the Tennessee rate of 9.75% (6% on food or other essentials) on every dollar anytime I buy a digital "good" through PSN or Microsoft Store or even if I buy something from a seller based out of your neck of the woods which, I might add, is higher than the California tax rate you mention in the video.
Edit: Noy saying we have it worse than you, just thought I should share the insight that could only come from being an American.
Edit 2: 15:05 yeah, out here the $.98 chocolate bar is $1.98 and it is 3/4 the size. Also, we may have our own oil reserves to fall back on, but that doesn't mean we use them. Gas just shot up $.30 per gallon over the course of a week.

After hearing your story i have to add an german version of it:
Here in lower saxony, next to the Harz mountain range with the folkoloristic well known Brocken mountain lays Braunschweig (Brunswick),
we did lose over the last 20 years allmost all IT stores and gaming stores, Atelco is no more, Kosatec does knowadays only B2B and has no more store in the city, we have a gamestop at the "Schloss" (the former destroyed city castle is rebuild as an mall which had destroyed allmost the store fronts of the inner city... yay!)
More to the north lays the little city of Celle, here is the dying of the inner city even worse, it is a theme all over germany, the little specialized stores and mom-and-pop-family owned little store chains did mostly die over the last 10 - 15 years and where no empty store fronts remained there are shisha-bars, handy (smartphones) stores which sell cheap accessoirs and bookmakers for betting, even whole chains of bookmakers...
The reason besides the economically degredation of not all but many citizens is naturally the online economy.
Amazon is the new imperator of the shopping since at least 15 years. Mindfactory, Alternate and Caseking should be the biggest online resellers for computer consumer tech which killed all others, even formally old and renowed chains like Conrad electronics are in a really hard and rough spot nowadays, they had to shut down their stores in Brunswick and Hannover...
Even Secondhand stores / Thrift Stores are a rare finding so no browsing through old consoles and games or music cds and DVDs... (But at least we still have 2 or 3 more or less good equiped thrift stores here - so far as i now....) Because of Ebay and "Kleinanzeigen", at least the normal citizen could cut out the middle man when he wants to thrift but it is still online.
.... All taking not in account that physical releases are dying down of course because of online sales of digital copies ... Still, you can buy at gog and get offline installers, mostly even at discount prices, but how long will gog stand before we have to pay for all games the Nintendo-prices without any discounts....
AAAND more expensive day to day living costs without any significant increase of the wages over the last 10 or 20 years... It is not alone the economy crisis, it is the profiting and milking of the citizen done by the corporations which got to new heigts over the last 5 years...
But enough rambling from a 40-something. Let us hope for the best and may the winds of change turn again in all our favours.
And sorry for my bad english and even worse pacing of not coming to the point of my thoughts.

I live in the Midwest of the US. Our food prices here haven't necessarily gone up too much since the pandemic aside from eggs and milk. What they have done here is give you 20-25% less in a package versus before for the same price. They are calling it shrinkflation. But housing has tripled in cost. A house down the street from my house is renting from some company at 3500 USD a month. We bought our house in 2007 after my wife and I got married, so we are on a low interest rate, and all that, but we pay about 1200 a month for mortgage, 170 a month for electricity, 70 a month for gas. My electricity is so high because I have 5 3d printers that run a lot. Our power costs have gone up here recently though, but not because of an increase in cost per kilowatt hour. No, they are charging more miscellaneous fees than they used to. Jumped our bill by almost 90 dollars a month. I have cut back on the quantity of printing I am doing to offset it. This whole straight dollar to whatever money conversion is devastating for other countries. This straight conversion just screws over so many parts of the world, and in countries where it would benefit them to do a straight conversion? They jack up the price astronomically to maintain their profit lines. The whole thing just reeks of a shell con game.

I was able to buy the game at the price I would have been able to buy new release games 15 years ago just by checking a few local retail websites, then I took it home and upgraded to the deluxe edition and still ended up paying less in total than the standard digital edition on the PS store.

Very interesting video Lady Decade. It's nice to hear you talk about going to your local game shop and getting excited to get the game only to be disappointed by the price.
Towards the end of the video you were talking about several economic reasons why Europeans pay a lot of tax. ''Inflation'' has a lot to do with it and it's because everyone is greedy and wants to put up prices/rent/groceries etc and blame it on something that has absolutely nothing to do with it like Covid-19, climate change, Russian invasion into Ukraine and the Israel/Ghaza war.
Here in Australia we have a dud of a prime minister who is hell bent on wrecking our Australian economy, we're paying up to $800 dollars on electricity a quarter all because our government wants to exit fossil fuels, we supply our own electricity but our government says that the high prices are because of Russia's invasion into Ukraine? Australia doesn't get it's gas or power from Europe and his party keeps spending money and giving it to foreign aid instead of concentrating on getting his backyard in order first and it's driving up inflation so everyday Aussies have to pay an arm and a leg just to be able to afford things. I know you brits are having it tough but it's nothing compared to what's happening here in Australia where everything costs 3x more than it should. Australia is on the brink of bankruptcy.

2 bedroom in the US here. My electric bill, on it's own (I have oil heat/hot water and a gas stove/oven) was...wait for it...$493. Oil was $147 and propane was $41. That's not the worst of it though, ast least for most Americans. The real issue is taxes (Federal and State and often City/County) on your paycheck (typically 20-30%) then another 4%-12% sales tax (7% for me), gasoline (typical daily commute is 35 miles *if* I use public transportation after driving 17.5 miles to the closest bus stop, or 125 miles if I just drive myself which is the norm as I can either drive for about 35 each way or spend 3 hours bus hopping to reach my destinations), and health care. Health care and gas (and now food) are absolutely crushing Americans atm. Shitty insurance is typically around $50/wk for a single person or $150 for a family plan. A decent PPO will run you $300/wk or $600/wk for a family plan at which point you probably only have to pay the first $1K of your medical bills and another $1K in prescriptions before you can start paying $5-$50 per prescription and, idk, $25 for a regular doctor's visit and $100 or so for a specialist (podiatrist, ObGyn etc). Now if yo have a crappy HMO forget it. You might be paying the first $10K in medical care, arguing on the phone to get your insurance to cover an antibiotic that was 5 cents per pill 3 years ago that is now $23 per capsule/tablet of wich you will only have to pay $9/pill if you win the discussion and have already paid your medication deductable for the year. Wow HMO's can be a nightmare. I am so glad I ponied up for a business PPO plan for myself and my employees as it may cost more up front, but it saves a boatload of time and headaches in the long run, along with $ for most people who are over 35 and not the epitome of health. More than 1 doctors visit per year and it basically pays itself, never mind people missing less work because they actually pay to get people better as opposed to insisting on the cheapest option first, then the next option, and finally what they should have paid for from the beginning. Stupid.
Anyway, I'd rather pay more for video games. The companies typically base prices on the QOL in each country, and England is significantly ahead of the US there. Not Ireland or Sweden ahead, but a good deal in front none-the-less. Electric is also screwing people in the US atm as well. Most people are used to paying $0.05/KwH-$0.12/KwH which has essentially doubled nationwide. Then you take that (13 cents/KwH for me) and more than double it again after delivery fee (yeah, delivery fees...on electricity...ugh), state and town tax along with a national grid fee leaving it around 26 cents/KwH whereas 3 years ago we were under $0.10 after all was said and done. That may seem inexpensive to someone in Europe, but it's pretty brutal when you never had to worry about an electric bill over $100 bucks a month before. I have no clue how people get by on the median household income of $70K, which only 25% of Americans actually fall into with over half making $45K or under per household. In the midwest I guess it could work, but on the coast, especially in old mill or fishing towns that are now over 50% low income government housing, if you aren't getting those freebies from the state for not working and having kids, you're screwed. I'm having a hard time saving this year and I earn...well more than the average, specifics aren't important. Even $70 US for a game is out of reach for what I would guess is the majority of people in the US. A few times a year sure, but the days of most of us being able to grab a new game or two at or near full price every month are done.
If video game companies thought this year was starting poorly, they haven't seen anything yet. Jobs are getting more and more apt to toss people, while people are refusing to work at fast food places even if they are paying twenty bucks an hour, and are instead ignoring the credit cards they maxed out already and just paying for the essentials...and Uber eats bc cooking takes time, who cares if it is still more than 50% cheaper than eating out. The layoffs in video games are going to make the first half of this year look like it was a hiring frenzy as we lose more and more studios because people simply cannot afford to buy games, especially full price console releases. Ubisoft is high with it's current pricing structure. GTAVI will do great. FIFA, Madden, Cod etc will do fine, but more niche titles or titles without PS4 level install bases are screwed if they have the typical $200M+ dev budget. Can't wait to see how EA reacts to DragonAge: Dreadwolf. After all the pivots the game probably needs to sell 14M or so to break even (at full price) which I just don't see a possibility of, and with so many games in similar situations, it is going to be an absolute blood bath.

In the US, our Green movement has pushed it the cost of utilities up quite a bit. It's not uncommon for utilities to reach in excess of $300/mo

3 bedroom house in Texas less than $1500 sq ft. We pay about $250 in winter to around $400 in summer.

I remember EB and Game in Colchester then the 2 game stores, then they moved it to Head street. I went recently and I could not find the store I once knew. More restaurants opening in the high street. Still down about the hub Debenhams and Virgin meg store in culver sq. Every time I go now places are either shut, moved or replaced with something else. Miss the old days of going to 6th Form there then going to game to get the latest releases.

I'm in Canada, it's pretty much the same here. I got my copy from Amazon and it was 100 bucks Canadian after shipping. Gaming is getting outrageous, I don't buy very many games brand new anymore due to the prices being so crazy. If you want to feel better about your situation, look up Trudeu's carbon tax. We are being "mugged off" as well lol

the perk of not having tax included in the price is that we notice when they change it and get a lot of pushback. wonder if we have managed to keep sales tax lower because of it.

I'm in Canada. The entire dairy section is a luxury item, never mind the latest game on the latest console.
