David Bowie - Interview at Slane Castle, Ireland 1987

On 11 July 1987 David Bowie brought his Glass Spider Tour to Ireland when he played at Slane Castle, county Meath.
Support acts included Aslan, Big Country and The Groove.
Ahead of his performance, he spoke to Marty Whelan for the programme ‘Video File’. Bowie recalls performing on the RTÉ pop music programme ‘Like Now!’ in 1969. Unfortunately, only photographs of the performance remain, as the tapes have been wiped...

I met Bowie on tbe first night of his Maine Road gig. He stayed at the Midland Hotel in Manchester. My wife and I were given access to the after show party at the Midland. Howie was very welcoming and warm. A great guy.

I can't get over how perfect he is. I didn't think perfection existed but I find that even his little quirks or goofy things he does sometimes just make him more perfect. How can it be that a human can possess an unbelievable voice, the most amazing way of singing and song-writing, an incredible look and on top of it all the most kind, intelligent, beautiful, humble yet confident, funny and charming character. He was a miracle.

At 47 yrs.old, my Daughter took me to the Concert at 11:30 am. Sat on bare ground all day in pouring Rain, No Beer, or anything, no" Porta- Potties ". Bowie came on after dark, he was Cool. Dad's must endure for their Daughters. Don't think about the discomfort, I remember my daughter's happiness.

Bowie never did an interview, even at his lowest times, that didn't have lots of knowledge and insights. He was my generation's Bob Dylan. "Rule Britannia's Out of Bounds!" He refused he OBE.
