    8:54 It isn't necessarily that we don't stop and think about the delayed consequences that lie ahead. The problem is, at least for me, that we often do actually think about these consequences. That's what makes it so stressful, because even if you still think about these consequences you just can't seem to motivate your brain to do the thing that will benefit you in the long run.

      @@yineLeyla stop saying its a gift, its not. Hyperfocus is not a gift, its a circumstance, being obsessed with something so badly that you forget to eat or got to bed on time isnt beneficial at all when living in a civilized society. ADHD is an handicap, just like being blind, or being deaf or mute or being unable to walk, the only difference is that it is mental and psychological instead of physical. It does not mean that you should want to die or start crying about it, all it means is that you must accept that you have this handicap and you must make the most out of your life knowing this. Someone who knows they have this disorder will be way better equipped to succeed in their life than someone who doesnt know they have it. Because although it is impossible to cure ADHD, you can still treat it with special techniques and with medication and you can improve yourself but it has to be done in a ADHD specific kind of way. You cannot try to follow random self improvement advice because it wont work. What I love about Russel Barkley is that he knows everything about ADHD and he tells us what it is and what we can do to change things.

      Let’s just put it this way. I invented a sport when I was 12 (I’m now 38). Because of this sport I have taken up the following: wood working, prop making, programming, art, hockey, golf, handball, baseball, soccer, animation, graphic design, film making, forging, welding, sewing, basketball, the list goes on and on. I can do all of those things quite well but I never got “great” at ANY of them.
      Over the last 25 years I have tried to make this sport into, not only a real game, but also a board game and a video game. I work on it incessantly for a few weeks, make progress on SOMETHING, lose all interest, become depressed because I’ve wasted my life and have never found something tangible that I’m passionate about, am in a bad mood for a while until I get inspired to make some new aspect of this game, then go manic making things and spending money, rinse and repeat. I have changed/added/removed elements of this sport so many times over the years that I don’t really remember what it was to begin with, however I have probably 100 notebooks and sketch books full of art relating to it that I never go back and reference. Oh, also I was told a few months ago that I have ADHD and I’ve seen multiple therapists over the last 10 years that just told me I was bipolar or borderline personality and put me on medication that made it worse. I wish I had found this out in high school so I could learn to better direct my life towards the future. But here I am at 38 still working on this dream and never finishing it. I want to fix myself so badly but to me, realizing that I have to do things the same way for the rest of my life, let alone longer than a few months, just sounds terrifying to me. I just want my brain to shut up.
      Recently I bought an expensive program to learn German so my wife and I could stop speaking pig Latin in front of the kids. Went really hardcore for about 3 weeks and learned a lot. I haven’t done it for about a month now because I decided to take up golf, art and trampoline again.
      Sound about right?

    Yup.. After watching yourself go through cycles of poor impulsive emotional decisions and mistakes/failures, you start to get to the point where you just feel like you can't trust yourself anymore. It starts to feel easier to stop making goals and decisions. One big letdown for yourself instead of a series of letdowns for yourself and others.. I know it's not right, and I'm getting help now at 35 (after being diagnosed at 14 -when my brother who was 6 got diagnosed).

    I have ADHD, and I allways thought the name was absolutely useless, but this makes sense. And I am struggling more with the innabillity to adjust myself, then the ability to sustain focus. I know what to do, how to do it, why I ought to do it, when to do it, and then I go do something else. I have litterally asked myself why? Out loud multiple times, aswell as pretending I didden't have that thought, to excuse doing something else.

  • @zXJulianXz
    @zXJulianXz 6 лет назад +54

    Although I agree with many aspects of what Dr Barkley says on this subject, I can't help but feel he has missed a trick with this. I am unable to regulate my thoughts, but my thoughts are almost always directed towards myself and changing my behaviour. Unfortunately, I get so bogged down and so often misdirected by my thoughts that I am not amazingly effective at this. I would say that because I focus all of my thinking inwardly rather than externally, I am better regulated in society than many others who have adhd. I have to say, it helps me hide the disorder well, but it does not help me develop my passions. I am too busy monitoring my behaviour to cultivate much of my creative talent or passion.
    This is the part that is disabling for me. I'm 25, and I am realising that I cannot carry on using all of my energy to 'fit in'. It is time to pour it into the things I love and care less about how others perceive me. This is with the caveat that I will never do anything to harm others, at least when I am aware or capable of preventing this.

Worked graveyard shift working at logistics company, after a year I said screw it and went to college for computer programming. A semester in, I decided it was too difficult and moved towards computer networking and systems administration. I graduated in 2015. Since then, I've been working as a software tech support person. It's so boring and mundane.

      shibaak drink some green tea & set a timer to watch video for 3-5 min & a timer to rest 2-3 min from watching the video. During rest period eat small amount of sugar from fruit such as berries or raisins & some light exercise such as jogging in place, arm circles, push ups & squats. Just keep the intensity of exercise at a level that energizes you & not exhaust you.

      To improve your concentration in the long term, try meditating for a couple minutes each day. Start with about 3 minutes and build up slowly to 5-10 minutes, see if it works for you :) This will probably help you get a feel for how long it takes for 5 minutes to pass and to get used to controlling your impulses. Something else that works for some people is reading, setting a timer to read for 20mins every day or maybe even less. It helps strengthen your concentration muscle for practical situations like watching this video. I hope you'll find something that works for you! Good luck

ADHD is no superpower like the rest of others are painting it as.Viewing it as a Executive Function deficit disorder personally gave me a better understanding to learn and grow. I'm absolutely sure that anyone with ADHD who listens to his lecture will definitely understand themselves better and try to change their old behaviours which wasn't leading them anywhere.

    I would have struggled to watch it too but Adderall has been the reason why I’m able to absorb much of what I read and listen to. I wish my parents knew about this a long time ago (I struggled with keeping my school grades up) but I’m sure they struggled with it too without them knowing what ADHD was.
    Once I was able to put a name on it, it all became clear and I got help. I’m so grateful for Adderall. I feel like I’m catching up on so much information and knowledge that I missed when I was younger.

    After reading Daniel Amens "Healing Add" I've had suspicions regarding the information in the last three videos. I KNEW this had way more to do with just attention. Also why getting myself to do beneficial routine tasks for more than like one day was near impossible. Also have a suspicion that this is one of the reasons Im a binge snacker. Not only are tortilla chips soothing (my drug of choice), they also break down into glucose which is used by the brain to do tasks that require willpower (demonstrated in a separate video), and will power burns out quicker than average in people with Executive function deceit disorder. This has always had a restorative effect on me and when I find that im not allowing myself to snack, I see an increase in issues. I am dealing with GAD right now and something tells me that some of it has its roots in my knowledge that I will not be able to continually carry out the responsibilities required of me to make a future for myself. With that being said if you are struggling, keep going, I know I will. The answers are out there.

Schools do not take the time, strategies etc to assist the children or parents and that is a child's entire life basically wasted on what cannot help or pertain to them. here are no organized teaching groups available for both child and parent to help / teach/ practice recognizing symptoms and APPROPRIATE actions to be taking... how do I respond to an ADHD person appropriately for each of their symptoms they struggle with...etc etc. There us sooo sooo much to address here ...but I thank you for this 1st step!

    We ADHD, sufferers are one of the most badly treated mental conditions there is.
    Every other condition has either a cool name, is well taught about, or has strong organizations that help, support, and spread awareness about the condition. But, to the mainstream media and the majority of people, ADHD = lazy badly braught-uo people.
    It's very saddening how we are left in our mental strugles.
    Even the name ADHD is innaccurate, as if, noboby ever cared except some rare souls like Dr Barkley.

  • @MrArtVein
    @MrArtVein 7 месяцев назад +1

    I would argue that ADHD isn't always a failure of self regulation but sometimes it's a survival mechanism. I've seen perfectly fine people achieving goals then their situation changes and they're wired. If you're in a life or death situation you're gonna be hyper aware to every little thing like a soldier listening for someone in the bushes. If it's just a racoon it's gonna get the same attention. Which is why there's an executive command structure. Long term goal setting can be an issue not because they don't have goals but because they literally can't see themselves in that future because something more immediate is at hand. It's hard to focus on Trigonometry when you've got an abusive parent at home or if you're underweight wondering where your next meal is. Same person in college with all those needs met can excel at Calculus.

    What makes people not take ADHD seriously is the magnitude of its use as a generic label for any child who doesn't fit into the extreme structure of the US school system. In your office it might be a condition of executive dysfunction- in the field it's when a kid gets bored in class, fidgets, or displays the psychological and emotional needs of a child outside of their allotted time slot. The first couple generations who watched that unfolding are adults now and that's what they think it is- not a label for inattention, but just *misbehavior.*

  • @Tarotainment

    As I hear him talk. The things he's saying apply to doing what you are told. To listening in school and doing things you do not want to do. My son had add in school. I took him out and he taught himself. He now knows how to code in every computer language, everything g about world history, linguistics, mapping, an actual super genius imo. Sharp, aware, conscious. These problems are mostly problems in controlling the child. Not in his ability to control himself to do what he sees fit.

    Overall I find these videos to be excellent, however, I find Dr Barkley's use of sweeping generalities annoying and also somewhat misleading in terms of ADD presentations. I have been diagnosed with ADD as an adult, both my children and my sister have it too as well as many friends, so I consider myself fairly well immersed in the ADD world. However, I feel that the statement that all who suffer with ADD are emotionally dysregulated is misleading. I am not like this and tend to be a largely considered person, my daughter and several of my friends are the same, however, my son and others that I know ARE this way. I understood that there were different types of ADD which affected individuals differently - I also see various different levels in behaviours.

    I want to contribute CC subtitle to the videos so more people could learn it better....
    I want to fix some errors on the english subtitle and add Indonesian subtitle. Most of the reason is because I want to show this video to my family-they don't understans English, sadly-and because I want to start sharing ADHD awareness in my country. One of the method is by recommending great ADHD videos to them, with a subtitle so they could understand.
    I can't promise about when I can finish because I have other priorities and well, I have ADHD, but I really, really want to add subtitle....
    I hope you read this and give me a response.
