      Crunchy_Pants they should build septic tanks and connection to a sewage system that goes into a giant tank, and once that fills, ship it to the mainland for cleaning. Of course it would cost billions of dollars tho

    Protect the coral reefs. I don't care if the state goes into debt because of it. Revived coral reefs can bring in tourist dollars to pay off that debt.

    This does not seem like such a difficult problem to solve. Here are a couple of easy solutions. They can release Shit Eating Microbes into each of the Cesspits, similarly to how they treat Septic Tanks in the states. They can install some Bioretention Gardens or Ponds in the area of the runoff.

    BTW, ancestral hawaiian natives, aka polinesian hawaiian have been nearly all killed or dispossessed and now constitute a very small minority (like 5%), so the "we've been doing it for generations" argument is not backed by nativist reasons. It's like to say "in the middle ages people threw poop out of the windows for generations, so I need to do the same now".

    Instead of looking into new technologies why not look into older styles
    with more knowledge/thought.. What about grey water management and separating
    liquid from solid composting toilets? (Making sure the quality of
    food/substances are okay to be compostable - many medications and
    substances are not really safe to be compost.) Educating ourselves is
    such an important thing, we may find that the answers are out there
    and alive today, we just haven’t been educated as civilians on how
    to go about it. There is a lot of information and misinformation on
    the internet, educate yourselves wisely!

    In my country (Germany) waste water treatment facilities are built and operated by the local muncipal through tax money. So the rich pay the part, which the poor can't provide and the whole community has a benefit. But it seems in the US everyone is left with his own shit. The lack of public services in general is really shocking for me. But that fits just with the reputation of having a largely unregulated turbocapitalism

    so tired of the answer "this is how my ancestors did things" or any variation of. Doesn't matter of it's coming from an island tribe, or some random city dweller. When you have been given proof that what you are doing is harmful that end of that portion of the conversation, move onto solutions. Your ancestors probably lived with smaller populations, your ancestors didn't know the impact they had at the time. Your ancestors are dead, so what does it matter.

    • @jedimaster1080
      @jedimaster1080 7 лет назад +11

      bala5984 First of all, it's spelled Hawaii. Second, Hawaii is made up of over 100 islands, but only 7 of them are inhabited. Most of the islands have a sewage system in place, but in the rural areas cesspools are the only option that they have because on some of the islands, houses are being built without access to the main sewer line. Why? Because the companies who are building these homes don't want to pay for building a sewer line from the house to the main sewer line. Instead they give the homeowner the option to pay to have a sewer added or they can have a cesspool or have a septic tank installed. Clearly if you lived in a city this problem doesn't exist. This problem only exists in rural areas.

    This is a great and helpful look at a problem I had never heard of, well told by Kyle Thiermann in his down to earth, easy to grasp way. Maybe Surfrider or one of the organizations working on this could implement something where everyone who comes to Maui has a way to donate $5 for the people who can't afford to make the switch to a better system, to go along with the tax credit, so everyone can replace their cesspools. You could connect this well-told short story to the campaign....

      America has a sewage systems in some upper class areas (Beverly Hills My home). It's just sewage systems are very expensive and on islands just isn't worth the work. As you can see from the video they need to you alternate ways to get rid of waste.

    • @The.Hawaiian.Kingdom
      @The.Hawaiian.Kingdom Год назад

      @@jake.davidson54 We actually DO have sewage treatment facilities, they aren’t really that much more expensive to build than elsewhere. The issue is our homes are older homes, especially so on islands other than O’ahu. Homes built in the 1950’s, and when treatment facilities were built many people in older homes didn’t pay to transition to sewer or even septic, because THATS what costs a lot. Then add to that the boom of Americans moving here adding another million people in a very limited area and a government that honestly just couldn’t care less… and this is what happens.

  • @Nicholas-f5
    @Nicholas-f5 5 лет назад

    So gross! Why don't they add enzymes and do a cistern/septic tank?

    • @The.Hawaiian.Kingdom
      @The.Hawaiian.Kingdom Год назад

      I’m guessing the enzymes could impact the reefs as well. As for cistern/septic, it’s costs homeowners 10,000-20,000 on average to transition from cesspools and Hawai’i is already the most expensive place to live and people are already barely just scraping by, so they can’t afford an addition cost like that.
