Crunchy_Pants they should build septic tanks and connection to a sewage system that goes into a giant tank, and once that fills, ship it to the mainland for cleaning. Of course it would cost billions of dollars tho
Protect the coral reefs. I don't care if the state goes into debt because of it. Revived coral reefs can bring in tourist dollars to pay off that debt.
OK, we can all see and understand that this is a real problem. So what's the plan to fix it? Beating people over the head with a problem, then saying quickly that "low income people probably can't afford the 1 solution we have" won't get anything done.
I love this guy as a host. Awesome story. Hopefully stories like this will raise some important awareness around these issues and inspire more support for solutions and water quality patrol.
Israel has 90% waste water recycled that's not counting the brackish water they're treating for agricultural use. perhaps if the USA were to approach them for help they may hold the answer to this problem.
This does not seem like such a difficult problem to solve. Here are a couple of easy solutions. They can release Shit Eating Microbes into each of the Cesspits, similarly to how they treat Septic Tanks in the states. They can install some Bioretention Gardens or Ponds in the area of the runoff.
Kills me when i hear Europeans talk about "their ancestors" and they re not from Hawaii... Japanese are taken over Hawaii.. U can hardly tell who is "native" anymore and most live on crumbs. ..

They took away one of the best diving and fishing spots on the big island. What a coincidence that it's infront of kukio and Hualalai. All the rich homes and the resort. This is why there's no fish. What I grasp from this video: "When I was 8, my favorite vacation spot was in Hawaii. Now, ~20 years later, pollution has created an environmental disaster. Hey you, you darn natives, quit shitting in your fucking holes already! *throws artificially manufactured plastic bottle in disgust*"
Wait, you're telling me in Hawaii there's no blackwater sewage system and treatment?? WTF, and I thought the US was in the "first world". BTW, ancestral hawaiian natives, aka polinesian hawaiian have been nearly all killed or dispossessed and now constitute a very small minority (like 5%), so the "we've been doing it for generations" argument is not backed by nativist reasons. It's like to say "in the middle ages people threw poop out of the windows for generations, so I need to do the same now".
Instead of looking into new technologies why not look into older styles with more knowledge/thought.. What about grey water management and separating liquid from solid composting toilets? (Making sure the quality of food/substances are okay to be compostable - many medications and substances are not really safe to be compost.) Educating ourselves is such an important thing, we may find that the answers are out there and alive today, we just haven’t been educated as civilians on how to go about it. There is a lot of information and misinformation on the internet, educate yourselves wisely!
In my country (Germany) waste water treatment facilities are built and operated by the local muncipal through tax money. So the rich pay the part, which the poor can't provide and the whole community has a benefit. But it seems in the US everyone is left with his own shit. The lack of public services in general is really shocking for me. But that fits just with the reputation of having a largely unregulated turbocapitalism
Why aren't they using septic tanks with drain fields? It a building code requirement for homes built beyond sewage lines all over the other 49 US states.
so tired of the answer "this is how my ancestors did things" or any variation of. Doesn't matter of it's coming from an island tribe, or some random city dweller. When you have been given proof that what you are doing is harmful that end of that portion of the conversation, move onto solutions. Your ancestors probably lived with smaller populations, your ancestors didn't know the impact they had at the time. Your ancestors are dead, so what does it matter.
We humans really need to chill on our population growth. It's the only way to make sure we don't break things irreparably before we figure out how to handle it.
!st it was Monsanto's pesticides that have destroyed one of the cleanest places on Earth and now we have human excrement problems that are turning the place into a place that tourists have no desire to travel to. I wouldn't go there to drink water that will kill me.
If this is in Hawaii, imagine the negative even worst impact in Latin America. At least in Hawaii you only see it in rural areas, but in Latin America you see this in suburbs and ever growing cities
Why is human waste such an issue for us? It seems like everywhere it is causing problems. Is it just the sheer number of us, that we are living in the same place, both or something else?
The technology is there, nothing new is needed, there are a dozens systems from septic tanks to small pressure lines. It will cost money to get it cleaned, get over it.
bala5984 First of all, it's spelled Hawaii. Second, Hawaii is made up of over 100 islands, but only 7 of them are inhabited. Most of the islands have a sewage system in place, but in the rural areas cesspools are the only option that they have because on some of the islands, houses are being built without access to the main sewer line. Why? Because the companies who are building these homes don't want to pay for building a sewer line from the house to the main sewer line. Instead they give the homeowner the option to pay to have a sewer added or they can have a cesspool or have a septic tank installed. Clearly if you lived in a city this problem doesn't exist. This problem only exists in rural areas.
This is a great and helpful look at a problem I had never heard of, well told by Kyle Thiermann in his down to earth, easy to grasp way. Maybe Surfrider or one of the organizations working on this could implement something where everyone who comes to Maui has a way to donate $5 for the people who can't afford to make the switch to a better system, to go along with the tax credit, so everyone can replace their cesspools. You could connect this well-told short story to the campaign....

I never knew that America doesn't have sewage systems anywhere, but it explains _a lot_ to be honest! Maybe we can send over some civil engineers from Europe or China to show them (if they can afford it)?
America has a sewage systems in some upper class areas (Beverly Hills My home). It's just sewage systems are very expensive and on islands just isn't worth the work. As you can see from the video they need to you alternate ways to get rid of waste.
@@jake.davidson54 We actually DO have sewage treatment facilities, they aren’t really that much more expensive to build than elsewhere. The issue is our homes are older homes, especially so on islands other than O’ahu. Homes built in the 1950’s, and when treatment facilities were built many people in older homes didn’t pay to transition to sewer or even septic, because THATS what costs a lot. Then add to that the boom of Americans moving here adding another million people in a very limited area and a government that honestly just couldn’t care less… and this is what happens.
I’m guessing the enzymes could impact the reefs as well. As for cistern/septic, it’s costs homeowners 10,000-20,000 on average to transition from cesspools and Hawai’i is already the most expensive place to live and people are already barely just scraping by, so they can’t afford an addition cost like that.
what i saying is no matter what you eat, your shit is always going to be harmful for the water. the problem isn't the shit per se but the population. when the population was small enough, it didn't matter. but now with huge population, doing things old way doesnt work at all. new york use to dump all of its shit on the ocean but since there are too many people now, it's not possible because they generate too much shit.
Of course nobody would want to swim in shit let alone the marine life.

It's usually referred as "A wild Grimer"

Why don't they create a plant to filter the waste like they do in cities?
because pooping on holes is their culture and every land in hawaii is sacred so you can't build.

The state govt can offer rebates for composting toilet systems? How can they not figure out a solution that took me less than a minute

What? How do they don't know what to do with their shit?
so they do not have sewer pipes? are they so poor?
