A big advantage of the Q cameras for me is the weather sealing. I do a lot of outdoor photography, often in terrible weather. Weather sealing is important for shooting in bad weather conditions.
It sounds like you are a UK photographer.. :) Great point and thanks for your input. I overlooked this advantage as a fair weather photographer. If I get time to do a summary on the MrLeica.com blog I will include this point so thanks. Normally I have film cameras with me too so I tend to go out on the sunny days. (I like contrasty light).
This is the typical sensible, well-balanced Matt review. One thought: after giving us 7 reasons why you might want to buy each camera, it would have been interesting to hear, say, four (or more or fewer) reasons why you should NOT want to buy each camera... I’m fortunate enough to have acquired both a Q2 and M10 (both used). I really enjoyed your breakdown/analysis, filled with specifics and reminders of the obvious. I’ve been improving with my M10 manual/rangefinder by just slowing down and thinking. Thanks for your posts. They’re great!
I've got both the M11 and Q2 (not 3) for two very different reasons. M11 is for me when I want to take photos and go out and be purposeful. Q2 is for quick shots in a more casual environment.I really enjoy the experience of the M11 for its own reasons. You're right though the Q is definitely a gateway into the M or SL system.
Thanks Ross! Very well summarised - Q cameras are casual shooters (I use mine just for the fast grab shots at weddings. I use the SL for the "planned" photos.
Thx for another great to the point review. I considered the Q3 recently after using M262 for years. The main reason being more precise framing when I need it. Especially the tilt screen helps reduce mis-framed shots dramatically. I'm not tall enough to do top down shots and sometimes I just can not get down on the floor.
Thanks for another great video, Matt! My biggest issue with the Q3 is that the screen only tilts one way. What about when we get older and we want to take lower angle portrait shots! ;-)
Thanks Greg! Yes I thought the same when I used the Hasselblad X2D that has a similar screen. I shoot a lot of portrait orientation photos so it's no use for those!
Great video as always Matt, thanks for all the work you put in! I managed to get a Q3 from Leica's website! But I also was on the list for a dealer and that came through as well if anyone is still on a waitlist I'd be happy to pass mine on!
Great video Matt! I own the SL2-S and I love it because it is half way between M11 and Q3. I tested the M11 and Q3 and I felt in love with the first one... but for my "strong" travel photography probably is better using SL2-S (more versatile) even if I usually use it with M lenses. Unfortunately I can't afford 2 Leica cameras 😅
Nothing beats the q3 for me, as you have mentioned I don’t have to think about what lens to bring. I had 2 Fuji cameras (xt5 and xh2s) and 8 lenses and every trip was just a disaster. Sold everything besides the xh2s and the 33 1.4 as I thought I would use them for videos, and bought the q3 instead. It’s been 3 months since then, and I hadn’t touched my xh2s, nor have I touched the osmo pocket 3, which was unexpected. I LOVE shooting videos on the q3 which, again, totally suprised me, and of course I love shooting photos with it. For me it’s an all in one camera, and If they ever will let us use the usb c for external mic as promised (Though I’ll admit I lost my hope it will ever happened) it will be the perfect camera for me
Another excellent video, Matt. Thanks. I gave up my RF Leicas a few years ago because of aging eyes that most often do best with autofocus. Had a Q and CL along with Nikon Z gear. Loved all, but now shoot only with my dynamic THREE: SL2, Q3, and Q2 Monochrom. I'm done!
Thanks! Great combo. Yes I'm sure I'll get to that too eventually. (That's why I like my SL and why I now often shoot film at f2 for models or zone focused)
Thanks Simon, I use a 1.4x mag rather than a diopter on M bodies. I'm -1.5 prescription and that works OK for me. See the full video, search Leica viewfinder magnifier (I think I titled it)
Hi Matt I’ve actually come across numerous M10 & M11 photographers who went the other way. They were so used to auto focus they found the rangefinders too much hassle Also, I traded a Nikon Z9 with 100-400 zoom for a rangefinder, now I’m unable to take sports and action photos and I have to buy all the same gear again All the very best
Thanks! Yes I think for those coming from AF setups it's good to try a RF before you sell as they wont suit everyone. It's hard to adjust after using full auto cameras (and for sports M cameras are not the correct choice.. unless you are really close to the action).
I ordered Q3 because of Autofocus and image stabilization- at 60mp I think image stabilization will be very helpful. For everything else I still have my D800 with ton of lenses.
I've owned many Leica bodies over the years (M10-P, M10-R, M11, M11-P, SL2, SL2-S, SL3, Q2, Q2M, Q3). Currently, I use the Q3, which I find offers the best balance between the M series' incomparable experience and the SL3's AF. As a serious musician with a busy gigging schedule, my music gear expenses impact my photography budget. I loved my M11 but had to sell it due to higher music-related expenses. (I refuse to put things on credit.) But I plan on getting another M system when the time is right.
I owned the Canon R5, Fuji X100V, and Leica M11. Sold the R5 and X100V and purchased the Q3. I still have about 10K of RF lenses to get rid of but I'm old and retired and decided that the M11 was my sports car and when I want to go out and have fun I grab that with my four lenses. I grab the Q3 for just about everything else and I'm going to be shooting landscapes in the fall and I love that the Q3 is weatherproof to some degree.
@simonrc I have Voigtlander 28mm 2.0 Ultron V2, 35mm 1.4 Nokton Classic II, 50mm F2 APO-Lanthar, Leica 50mm Summilux-M 1.4 ASPH, 90mm Summarit-M 2.4. That's 5... don't tell the wife. I only travel with 4 so one of the 50's stays home.
Haha I love it that most wives think Leica cost 10x less and all those lenses are the same one just extended or with hood etc :P Good line up! I'd use the 35 Ultron f2 and 90 2.8 APO but otherwise very similar!
Thanks, Matt, I found this very informative. All my current cameras are in the 24-26 Mpx range. Do you find that having 60 Mpx confers any great advantages in your day to day photography? If I had a 60Mpx camera, I think I would rarely need the full resolution, though the 36 Mpx setting would interest me (hopefully on a forthcoming SL3). Have you tried the 36 Mpx setting on the M11, and if so, how does it perform?
Thanks! I like the weight and USB-C but i'd be more that happy with a 24MP sensor. That's all we really need. As we get more MP you need sharper lenses, higher shutter speed and more light. (Lower resolution is better in low light). I would shoot at 36MP I think if I had one. Yes SL3 next!
Great video 👍 is it possible to shoot a couple dancing at the 1st dance on a dance floor in low light using manual focus on an m11 ? I’m interested in the leica but unsure if it’s possible to use it at weddings
I'm the other way around, I had my M10 first and got some lenses to use with it, I found myself using it in a way that I am requiring a fast street photos and for travel purposes mostly. I think this is for people that uses any studio or amateur work without any video or fast autofocus, then go for the M11. On the other hand sold my M10 and waiting for my Q3, as this will fulfill my needs as compared to changing lenses and other practicality I require to my needs. In summary, M11if you are that person who loves to shoot between lenses and an avid fan of the Leica brand, while getting a Q3, is because you love Leica but you are more practical and just requiring that speed with one lens. (if you own both, ask yourself am I that rich to own these two? or am I just crazy not to choose to what I need, simply because I love the hype ;-))
Thanks! Agree M11 for slowing down and enjoying it + different lenses. Q3 for grab shots/ ease. I couldn’t use a Q3, I like trying lots of lenses for their unique character.
My question is a little different, maybe will get an answer in your next video. For sure I'm going to get a M11 soon, should I upgrade my Q2 to Q3 later?
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks Matt. Basically I know the differences between the two, just unsure. As from Q to Q2, mainly because of higher resolution, even thru digital zoom, the 35mm pictures still look great. Means I have two lenses.
Matt, I've been using the Fujifilm camera (X-T4 and X-H2) with the intent to purchase a Leica camera. I also shoot with a Nikon F3 on film from time to time. I am leaning toward purchasing the M11 rather than the Q3, which would give me a different experience and expand the shooting style. The Q3 is cheaper, but I think it does not quite offer the true Leica experience,, but more of a point-and-shoot with a Leica logo on it. I hope I am making a good decision.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Just picked up an M11-P today at the local Leica store. I got the last black unit and was told that starting on July 1st, the price would go up by about 3%!
I don’t make my primary income from photography. When I travel I often find myself in potentially dodgy places after dark (yes even in Japan). I also want to travel light and with as little stress as possible. My Leica M6 will stay, with five of my favourite lenses, but my modern Leica journey is over. Leica has morphed into a lifestyle brand and I choose a different lifestyle. I can spend months travelling in Asia for the price of a M11 or Q3. No piece of gear will ever compensate for curtailed travel opportunities.
Thanks Brad! I made a video on this a while back.. Leica or Lifestyle or something similar.. I agree for those with limited funds (like me too) I prefer to travel cheap and use my older models (which I'm totally happy with) ..you'll see MY camera solution in a video to come soon. All these cameras were just a bonus. I didn't know I'd get to use these so I had my own kit.
Apart from the lack of OVF for rangefinding you can use the Q, with the limitation of the fixed lens, for all the manual work you can do with the M surely? You make it sound as if the Q is autofocus only.
Saying that the Q3 suits those who have no idea what f-stops or ISO means, fells kinda insulting. Pretty much everyone spending $6000 on a camera will have significant experience with photography - you probably wouldn't even know the brand Leica unless you're a photographer (or hunter). There's so many other ways of saying that a camera is easy to use, it was completely unnecessary to choose an insulting way.
Sorry if it came across like that. I do meet Q3 users that bought it as an easy to use camera without photography experience so that’s what I was referring too. Agree, the camera also attracts pros as an extra camera or downsizing from an extensive kit.
Thanks, nice combo! I just bought a Leica M10 (see my latest video), so I'm one step closer to the M11. The Q cameras fill the gaps that M cameras leave so I can see the excuse to own both (esp. if one is B&W one)
Matt while I couldn't get a q3 after 2 plus months of waiting, I must say it is way more practical and cheaper than an M11. The EVF at 5.7MP is way more easy to see and not going to go out of alignment like the RF if it gets bumped. Also, crucial is the CROPPED focal lengths of 35, 50, 75 and 90mm for most that means a bag of lenses without the weight. Also, IBIS, and macro mode the M11 doesn't have, Bye the way I bought a Fuji x-H2 with a few lenses for less than the Q3 would cost me. 40mp, same MP EVF , 6 IBIS stops Capable of flawless ISO 6400 and best yet battery life of over 700 pics per charge. Add to that the film sims for color and B&W and you have a great camera.
Thanks for sharing. Yes for jpeg the crops are good. I didn’t notice any different with the evf. (See a video to come), and yes I think many people buy Fuji for the great value.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom brand new the x-h2 is only a couple of hundred dollars more than a x100v. and has every aspect upgraded especially video and still very compact but with a better grip.
M is where you always end up, eventually. And I have both an SL and an S. The M means you can forget the thing you're holding and literally focus on what is in front of you.
like using my M240 with rangefinder and evf. if I have to work fast (need really responsive eye AF) or with crazy focal lengths then my Canon mirrorless cameras get used. If I think film needs to be involved then the M3 or the Cambo 4x5 comes out (rarely). don't really see the need for a high quality P and S, got a good phone ;-)
Yes me too! The M11 was blowing out the reds all the time too and the magenta is distracting. (That said the Q3 preset is darkening the red slightly*)(and the M11 preset was designed before the red car shoot so doesn't correct specifically for those reds) ..long answer
Thanks! Some of my Patreons are older so they always joke with me and say "go careful with that running/ cycling you do, I used to do all that before my knees went". They opened my eyes to the benefits to them of tilt screens.
Thanks Dennis! Yes many love the Q3. (Some people do overlook the fact that you can use great lenses from other brands on M cameras. I just bought the M10 and I absolutely love the M system). M camera are very rewarding vs. Q cameras. (You can get good photos with all Leica cameras but M cameras will improve your skills ..I think)
Q cameras have OIS "Optical Image Stabilization" in the lens not IBIS "In Body Image Stabilization", which is stabilization of the sensor. I sure wish it had IBIS, though!
I’m not a Leica user but I’d love to own one. It is just that I can’t justify the price tags yet. I wish the Q3 had a hybrid viewfinder and the tilt screen was flat with the body.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I’ve always wanted to own the M cameras but your comparison made me realized that the Q series is better for me. Thanks. Deserve a like and subscribe
It's so interesting, but I've never really considered the Q cameras. I used to really desire a Sony RX1 with a better viewfinder and some soul, which is exactly what the Q offers! It might be my own bias - I've also never considered an SL, or any other Leica other than an M. I did buy a panasonic LX series bridge camera once because of the 'Leica' optics. They were good, but the camera was another awful computer-with-lens-attachment (what should one expect, from an electronics company with no photographic heritage?). Actually, I only own an M11 because it's a rangefinder, and not at all because it's a Leica. I bought my first M8 because I couldn't find any Epson RD1's (plus the M8 crop made more sense). I don't care at all about the brand, and there are aspects of it which I positively dislike (the manufacture of hunting optics, for instance). It does seem that the Q and SL have really great image quality and a lovely user experience - for which Leica continually deserve considerable credit. As for the colour difference, I'm interested to see the M11 is more magenta: I find my M11 to also have a green tint, but Lightroom reads the WB with a near +20 magenta tint, which largely compensates for it.
Thanks! Yes I bought my first M9 as I wanted a RF camera. I've been with Leica ever since. The SL is a fantastic camera.. I too didn't consider it for years "that's not a proper Leica, it has no RF" ..but when I got mine a few years ago it quickly became my favourite camera for portraits (with M glass).
I have the Q3 and few M bodies... I hardly reach for the Q3! I feel the shooting experience is not the same. I enjoy shooting with M cameras but I can't say the same thing for the Q3. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic camera, but I prefer the M cameras.
I wish they would come out with an interchangeable lens Leica Q, or do an Olympus and come out with a Q50. I use the Q because my eyes are shot for near vision and I have a tremor. I am therefore not physically capable of using an M. Leica SL cameras and lenses are too heavy, and if I bought one it would be gathering dust as I would always opt for the lighter Q.
M is still more enjoyable to use, however most (and I really mean most) images I see posted online taken with a digital M, are actually slightly out of focus. Once you realise this, you can’t unsee it. And then people who get sharp photos wide open are usually using the visoflex or screen. Defeats the point. My Q3 images are critically sharp basically all the time. And this is coming from someone who’s had and shot m cameras for at least 5-8 years all up. Again - M is more fun. And shooting at F8 arguably it’s not really an issue, however, especially with the digital bodies, even slightly out is very out. Rant over 😅
The Q cameras can be focused manually. Also, I had a Q2 Monochrom and its autofocus was usually spot on. I regret selling my Q2M, but I have several other Leica cameras and have an M11 Monochrom on order.
This point is actually based on the many agreeing comments when I made the "gateway video". Yes not everyone, some like a more automated camera but many photographers do go via the Q-M route. I teach Leica photographers so they confirm this when they come to workshops.
My newest photography interest is concert photography. From my experience so far, this requires good and fast autofocus in low light situations with a camera with as much dynamic range as possible and very good high ISO performance, because I need the shutter to be at least 1/125 or faster to avoid motion blur. Also, because I only shoot in small crowded venues, I really want as small a kit as possible. The Q3 just seems like the obvious choice for this (if I could afford it), but so far, I'm making due with a very different but small and affordable Micro43 kit. A benefit for me using micro43 is that with a Leica M to MFT adapter, I can use my old Leica and Voigtländer M lenses on a digital camera when doing slower styles of photography - a first for me, since I have been using DSLR cameras for my digital photography until now.
I shoot stage performances (although not with a Leica because I need to keep both my kidneys) so we probably have a lot in common in terms of problems/solutions. A couple of things I think you might want to ask Matt: (1) Is the Q's autofocus effective in really low light and in difficult performance conditions such as strong backlighting or lights in the frame? (2) Since you're in crowded venues, you might want a quiet camera -- how do the Q and M compare for noise level when using mechanical shutter? (since we learned in Matt's most recent video that the M11's electronic shutter can skew objects moving at even leisurely speeds.)
Nice! I started my Leica journey with MFT too! I had a Lumix G1 (the first MFT body I think) + 40 1.4 Voigtlander. That gave me a taste of these lenses. Then I bought a Bessa R3A film camera then Leica M2 or 3 I forget which came first, to use the lens and then the Leica M9. I've never looked back! I still have MFT bodies (see Q vs MFT video) ..and they are also good if you need more range with the 2x crop added to "normal" FF lenses. (and more depth in focus at any given F stop, so you shoot at f1.4 for low light but get f2.8 depth which probably helps you.
Thanks James, the Q is quieter than the M in normal use (mechanical shutter), AF is pretty good for an old camera but Q3 with phase detect should be better.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I have the original Leica CL film camera made by Minolta (and a cheap old Leica M5). My camera journey started with a Minolta rangefinder a long time ago, and I wanted to experience Leica, when I got back into film photography years ago. I guess, I went the other way as far as Leica goes compared to you. I just don't expect to be able to upgrade to a digital Leica at all, but that's fine - I like MFT a lot.
just bustin your chops mate. was simply pointing out the fact that many leica owners (including moi) would forego many comforts for the sake of the gear.@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
Oh, man. I sold off all my Fuji gear and bought Leica Q2 for trip to Japan and I was FLOORED with the experience and output. Now, I dream of that M11. But, I'm having a hard time rationalizing owning both (never owned 2 cameras). Please, please...help me justify it! NOTE: I understand the differences, but need help to understand if in the real world both will get used!
Hi Jeff, congrats on your Q2! Yes the Q cameras give you high quality photos easily. M cameras will teach you photography and make you work for your images. M cameras require more time investment but also pay out the dividends! Do you need the M11 specifically? Absolutely not. I just bought the Leica M10 (see tonight's video) and that gives all the photographer benefits of the M11 in a much more affordable package.
The Leica M definitely improved my photography also, but it’s not anything I would recommend to anyone. A Q isn’t something I would buy. For that get a Fuji X100v.
You missed the biggest one, m11 and the lenses aren’t weather sealed. 17k camera and lens you can’t use half the time. Or Q3 a 6k camera you can. This still is mind blowing to me. Now I know, I have heard the old Leicas are tanks and have been war cameras. Big difference those cameras were film cameras, only electronic was the light meter. Worst case if it got wet you ruined a role of film. Now with a digital body without sealing, you just ruined a 10k camera. Seriously why are Leica fans not super frustrated with this?
I do not really understand your comments regarding color cast of M11 vs. Q3 - this should be due to your RAW developer and not the problem of the camera itself. Am I missing something? Never seen a color cast developing RAW files with Capture One...
SL3 and Q3 should have the same magenta tone colours vs more green from older cameras. They use the Sony sensor as you know. M11 is slightly different as I understand even though 60MP but still gives different colours to earlier models.
Wait a minute... it is very difficult to compare a Q3 with an M11. Lenses are also a factor when it comes to color science, so you are also always comparing lenses. The Q3 gives a more APO-ish look. Not classic glowy vintage Leica look. The Q3 has image stabilization and the lens is one (fully optimized) with the camera. This results in more often crispier and extreme sharp images. Owning both. I can tell you that's the real difference image wise😉👍🏼
Thanks! I noticed the magenta from any lens I tried on the M11, it's just the M11 "look" (as others have confirmed) but it's a quick fix with a slider in LR for anyone wanting a more green look.
Hi thanks for your feedback. Many are based from comments of other Leica users on my Leica videos (I try to listen to others too). There is some overlap too, like you can use the Q3 in manual focus mode and some points are specific to users, some like to shoot from the hip so they only consider the Q3, some need weather sealing so want the Q3, etc etc. I think just take the points that relate to how you work and ignore the others.
For serious photography, a camera with OVF is VERY annoying, I like WYSIWYG, so an OVF are NO go for me, I will say it once more and repeat it, if Leica made a Q-style Camera with a 9.5+ mega dot built-in EVF, 60 or 90 megapixels sensor and a Leica M-mount at a much lower price than the too overpriced M cameras, then I might get one some day. I can do photography slow even with an EVF ! So my advice get any brand other than Leica.

I’ve actually come across numerous M10 & M11 photographers who went the other way. They were so used to auto focus they found the rangefinders too much hassle
Also, I traded a Nikon Z9 with 100-400 zoom for a rangefinder, now I’m unable to take sports and action photos and I have to buy all the same gear again
All the very best
Great, yes you've got it covered with both systems
I think you will get rid of your Nikon gear before the end of this year.
@@peetje28021970 Shh, not so loud 🙂 Can’t do manual focus so maybe Nikon Zf2 (next gen when it comes out..hehe).
Thanks for sharing. Some great cameras there!
I feel like I’m in the same place R5 with numerous RF lenses - which 4 lenses do you buy for your M11?
@simonrc I have Voigtlander 28mm 2.0 Ultron V2, 35mm 1.4 Nokton Classic II, 50mm F2 APO-Lanthar, Leica 50mm Summilux-M 1.4 ASPH, 90mm Summarit-M 2.4. That's 5... don't tell the wife. I only travel with 4 so one of the 50's stays home.
Nice setup Rick and I like the sports car analogy! Yes sorry I forgot the +1 for the Q3 for the weather sealing
Yes SL3 next!
i use the Q2 along with an M10r and a 50. sometimes just the M with 35. best of both worlds
Great combo Marc, yes you have it covered!
Saving up for a Q (version 1)- looking forward to the Q shootout!
Great! Yes excellent bang for the buck as they say.. video to come soon!
Great video 👍 is it possible to shoot a couple dancing at the 1st dance on a dance floor in low light using manual focus on an m11 ? I’m interested in the leica but unsure if it’s possible to use it at weddings
Thanks and of course!! I’ve used the M8, M9, M240, CL, SL, Q to do those photos with no issues 👍🏻
Hey Matt! What bag were you using in that clip of you pulling your m camera out from your chest bag?
I love that bag! It's linked below most videos as people always ask (it's sold as a "pouch" but I use as a bag with a small lens setup) See link
did you do the color comparison test with a manual WB temperature setting?
Yes both set to daylight if I remember. I shoot daylight not AWB in my cameras.
A great comparison Matt. Leica has all the bases covered.
Thanks Michael!
Can’t wait for the Q shootout! Looking at a Q (typ116) now
Thanks! Yes I think in good light and cropping in camera the Q is more than good enough.. but we'll see!
My question is a little different, maybe will get an answer in your next video. For sure I'm going to get a M11 soon, should I upgrade my Q2 to Q3 later?
Q,Q2,Q3 video is next!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks Matt. Basically I know the differences between the two, just unsure. As from Q to Q2, mainly because of higher resolution, even thru digital zoom, the 35mm pictures still look great. Means I have two lenses.
@@eugeneli1952 video out in the next hour 👍🏻
Matt, I've been using the Fujifilm camera (X-T4 and X-H2) with the intent to purchase a Leica camera. I also shoot with a Nikon F3 on film from time to time. I am leaning toward purchasing the M11 rather than the Q3, which would give me a different experience and expand the shooting style. The Q3 is cheaper, but I think it does not quite offer the true Leica experience,, but more of a point-and-shoot with a Leica logo on it. I hope I am making a good decision.
Yes 100%, if you enjoy photography get the M11 (any M body)(see the M videos)
Thanks yes fair point re. AF. The MF is good on the Q3.. the fixed lens is the deal breaker.
And right in the middle (or so), you have the SL system... Almost best of both worlds. 😊
Yes! For my portraits the SL is king no doubt but I like a smaller setup for travel/ street ..see the next video ;)
The best option I took is to buy a Leica M11 monochrome and a Leica Q3... with these two cameras, you can now touch the sky... with your hands...
Thanks, nice combo! I just bought a Leica M10 (see my latest video), so I'm one step closer to the M11. The Q cameras fill the gaps that M cameras leave so I can see the excuse to own both (esp. if one is B&W one)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I share... 100% your opinion... thank you
Matt while I couldn't get a q3 after 2 plus months of waiting, I must say it is way more practical and cheaper than an M11.
The EVF at 5.7MP is way more easy to see and not going to go out of alignment like the RF if it gets bumped.
Also, crucial is the CROPPED focal lengths of 35, 50, 75 and 90mm for most that means a bag of lenses without
the weight. Also, IBIS, and macro mode the M11 doesn't have,
Bye the way I bought a Fuji x-H2 with a few lenses for less than the Q3 would cost me. 40mp, same MP EVF , 6 IBIS stops
Capable of flawless ISO 6400 and best yet battery life of over 700 pics per charge. Add to that the film sims for color
and B&W and you have a great camera.
Nicely put and I think so yes.. hence my "buy once!" comment!
I know this is a Leica channel but I can’t wait for the Nikon ZF full frame so I can put my Leica lenses on it plus it’s a EVF
I think using Leica lenses on any camera is still a win! All good :)
Nice, lots to think about, love the Q on a casual basis and the M on more serious outings analogy.
Thanks Martin, yes that's a great way to look at the 2 cameras
i have just got the Q3 purely as a 1 lens travel camera
Great, works well for this
like using my M240 with rangefinder and evf. if I have to work fast (need really responsive eye AF) or with crazy focal lengths then my Canon mirrorless cameras get used. If I think film needs to be involved then the M3 or the Cambo 4x5 comes out (rarely). don't really see the need for a high quality P and S, got a good phone ;-)
Thanks Peter! Nice cameras and yes a very fair point about phones! I hope to get a newer iPhone to record better B-roll for the channel
Interesting comparison. I believe the Q3 has OIS and not IBIS though.
Thanks Jeff, yes correct, sorry I said it wrong
the leica m11 photos look superb
Thanks! Yes the M11 is nice
What brand is the camera strap? Can share link? Thanks

Model is detailed in the video..
I'm a color red connoisseur, and the Q3 definitely has a nicer red to my eyes.
Yes me too! The M11 was blowing out the reds all the time too and the magenta is distracting. (That said the Q3 preset is darkening the red slightly*)(and the M11 preset was designed before the red car shoot so doesn't correct specifically for those reds) ..long answer
5:01 Matt you are a good sport!
Detail: I'm 75y/o.
Thanks! Some of my Patreons are older so they always joke with me and say "go careful with that running/ cycling you do, I used to do all that before my knees went". They opened my eyes to the benefits to them of tilt screens.
i prefer the Q3, my dreamcamera. the M11 is limited by the price of the Lenses
Thanks, sorry for the dumb oversight! You can see i'm not a true Q user (I only use mine for the occasional wedding usually)
I’m not a Leica user but I’d love to own one. It is just that I can’t justify the price tags yet. I wish the Q3 had a hybrid viewfinder and the tilt screen was flat with the body.
Thanks, yes others say this about the Q3 screen
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I’ve always wanted to own the M cameras but your comparison made me realized that the Q series is better for me. Thanks. Deserve a like and subscribe
I shoot a Nikon Z9 and needed a great camera for EDC and the Q3 fills the bill
Great! Thanks for teaching me what EDC means! (I Googled it) :)
I want an M size camera, interchangeable lenses, with autofocus
Ah yes, others do too! CL is you best option with the AF lenses. Add a case and big lens and it will be M size
Thank you! Yes I'm 100% the same. I only use the Q for a few weddings now.
Yes I hear you. The Q sounds like the perfect camera except for the lens. Yes we can dream of a Q50! Hopefully one day!
Rant over 😅
Yes agree, many people struggle with M cameras. I recommend 1.4x viewfinder magnifiers (from LightLensLab - see link on blog or video).
I love my M11! The Q2 was good but the M11 is great! The Q2/3 still don’t have reliable autofocus.
The Q cameras can be focused manually. Also, I had a Q2 Monochrom and its autofocus was usually spot on. I regret selling my Q2M, but I have several other Leica cameras and have an M11 Monochrom on order.
Hahaha….and an M11 does? Calibration issues…low light…just missed focus….focus is not an issue with Q3.
Thanks, yes i'm more of a M11 guy if I had the option of both cameras!
#1 is silly, Q3 is not a gateway. There are plenty of people who want Leica quality without dealing with the slowness of an M.
This point is actually based on the many agreeing comments when I made the "gateway video". Yes not everyone, some like a more automated camera but many photographers do go via the Q-M route. I teach Leica photographers so they confirm this when they come to workshops.
has anybody here figured out how to set the Q3 up, so that AE is not locked via shutter button half press in AF/S mode ( p.117 Q3 manual )
Hopefully someone with a Q3 will reply to you
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I think the firmware has the identical hick ups as the Panasonic S line
(and more depth in focus at any given F stop, so you shoot at f1.4 for low light but get f2.8 depth which probably helps you.
..A monochrom body is your answer IF you are OK with only B&W (for low light)
8:40 $30k worth of camera gear in the back of a corolla pretty much sums it up.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks for reply. Yeah, I'm leaning towards M10 to get my feet wet. Look forward to video.

The Leica M definitely improved my photography also, but it’s not anything I would recommend to anyone.
A Q isn’t something I would buy. For that get a Fuji X100v.

Hi Matt, First View & Comment
Thank you!!
Yes fair point! The old Leicas didn't have light meters so that why they just kept going (I use a 1931 Leica as my daily carry)
M11 is slightly different as I understand even though 60MP but still gives different colours to earlier models.
..I edited all in the same software. I’ve not tried Capture One
I have yet to hear of a Q3 brick, yet M11'S have BRICKED. Q3 for me.
Haha yes it’s all relative!

Matt - I think you should look back at this video and take an real objective view of the points you raised. - many do not stand up in the real world.
A little out of my price range

For serious photography, a camera with OVF is VERY annoying, I like WYSIWYG, so an OVF are NO go for me, I will say it once more and repeat it, if Leica made a Q-style Camera with a 9.5+ mega dot built-in EVF, 60 or 90 megapixels sensor and a Leica M-mount at a much lower price than the too overpriced M cameras, then I might get one some day. I can do photography slow even with an EVF ! So my advice get any brand other than Leica.
