  • ASMR Restoration of a large, rusty adjustable wrench. Watch this incredible transformation with mirror polishing!
Today, I will do a perfect restoration of a high quality 15" Armstrong adjustable wrench. This tool is made in USA. I love to restore high quality old tools that will have a long service life when they are complete.
I began by cleaning the wrench first with engine degreaser, then an acid rust remover known as "naval jelly". After cleaning, there was still some rust left. I cleaned the remaining rusty surfaces with wire wheels in a drill, and a wire brush. Next time I would like to try to vinegar rust removal, or electrolysis.
Once the wrench was cleaned, I wanted to make all of the edges of the tool smooth and defect free. I used several different types of files and alot of sanding to achieve this. At the end of the restoration, almost every surface was smooth.
After i fixed all of the defects, i moved on to mirror polishing the jaws. Steel is difficult to polish compared to other metals, so this tool a long time. I started by leveling the surface with 80 grit sand paper, then worked all the way up to wet sanding with 2000 grit. I then used a polishing wheel and two different compounds to achieve a mirror blank finish.
I decided to paint the handle with rustoleum truck bed-liner spray paint as I like the slightly textured finish and it is quite durable. I also like the look of the black paint paired with the polished steel surfaces.
    00:09 disassembling the wrench
    00:50 cleaning
    02:10 rust removal
    02:26 filing and sanding
    03:20 grinding excess metal
    03:41 restoring lower jaw
    05:27 sanding
    06:25 mirror polishing the jaws
    07:29 masking tape
    08:25 painting
    09:11 final assembly
    10:59 before and after
Please let me know if you like the results in the comments below. My goal is always to do the most perfect restoration possible with the limited tools that I have. If you have any questions about the tools, materials, or processes I used in the video then comment below and I will do my best to answer them.

The question is what can you do to make your videos better, easier restore and look after your health. To start that pink goo is dangerous, vinegar would have made your like easier and is harmless to the skin and lungs, which is less rust dust in the air and lastly the volume when the power tools are used, you can lower the volume during power tool use, other than that great restore and great video.

That coating wasn't rust it was a patina which is what happens when steel ages, this coating does no harm and actually protects the tool from rust. All he did was make it pretty but vulnerable to rust.

A previous owner allowed it to rust, then took corse sand paper to it. A fine pistol, but abused. It needs this kind of care.

Awesome video and what a great channel name! It was VERY satisfying to see the close up shots of the materials and textures along with the audio of the various processes and unique sounds that mechanical parts and tools make as you interact with them! Loved it! I also liked the choice applying the bed liner. What a great way to cover up some of the imperfections in the casted/forged metal. I imagine it actually will adhere better to the casted/forged metal since the surfaces are "rough" plus you didn't have to spend extra time and effort to smooth and polish the entire piece. Awesome, awesome job!

Tool wax or a light coating of oil. Most raw steel tools are coated in oil out of the box.

Very nicely done IF you can keep the paint on when using it. Powder coating with wrinkle finish would have been a better choice to keep the black finish for a lot longer. But using any type wrench will catch the scrapes and scratches over time. Thumbs Up!
